Asiah Thazin Soe Silva

Hello everyone, my name is Asiah Thazin Soe Silva. I am turning 16 on October13, 2022. I was born in the city of Los Angeles, California.

I grew up close with my grandparents here in the city of Pacoima, California. They are Mr. Ye Soe and Mrs. Htay Soe. They usually involve in many community activities very actively and they are well known by Burmese community in Los Angeles. I am learning many Burmese cultures, speaking and dancing growing up with them. I am one of the dancers of Burmese dance group " Myanmar Cultural Dance Academy -MCDA". I enjoyed much and met many Burmese young friends through the years.

I am attending North Valley Military School in Sun Valley. I am now in the 10th grade. I was in the volley ball team last year. Now, I will join boxing this year.

I am planning to join Law enforce ment (CHP) after my graduation here. My biggest influencer is my mom because she guided me well to be good and better at what I need to accom plish in life. I am proud of being a Burmese American born in the US. I will con tinue to keep our cultures and participate in Burmese community activities. In the future, I would like to go visit to the beautiful country now called " Myanmar" with my family. You all are welcome to this beautiful country too. Thank you so much.

So in late 1969, when handsome Chase An drews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life– until the unthinkable happens.

Where the Crawdads Sing is a story of resilience, survival, and strength of a young girl who goes through many stages of grief and denial from the abandoment of her whole family, to the two boys that she has fallen in love with. I absolutely fell in love with the story when reading one chapter, to finding myself staying up just to read one more. The story especially resonated with me because it display a strong sense of feminism, while keeping in touch with nature and the hard ships of love. I have to admit that when I first bought the book and read the summary on the back, I was so confused about what the ‘marsh’ was and why this story received so many awards and recognitions. According to Google, a marsh is a wetland dominated by herbaceous plants such as grasses, rushes, or sedges. Kya Clark has grown up and lived on the marsh her whole life, owning over hundreds of acres of the wetland. As she learns and grows as a person throughout her life, two young men enter her life. Tate, her brother’s older friend, teaches her to read and shows her acceptance and happiness.

Chase Andrews, a local football legend with a background of wealthiness, brings her hope of a future at first, but then resembles her father. Suddenly on a random day of 1969, Chase Andrews is found dead. Rumors swirl as to the main motive and possible suspects. Evidence goes against and for the defendant and the plaintiff. Rumors have been circulating for years about his involvement with the Marsh girl. The victim is Chase Andrews, “star quarterback and town hot shot,” who was once Kya’s lover. Could she be his killer? What motive could she have?

The book does an amazing job at tackling tough topics and portrays a wonderful coming-of-age story. I would recommend this book to anyone with an appreciation for nature, good storytelling and beauty, as well as anyone who is looking for a bit of mystery woven into their story. There were wholesome parts of the story that involved the coming-of-age story of a young girl. The main thing that stood out to me throughout this whole story was the ending. Who actually murdered the “star quarterback and town hot shot”? Was it Tate, the jealous, past boyfriend? Or was it Kya, the victim of a former relationship? Where the Crawdads Sing is suspenseful and unique and will keep you hooked until the very last page, and I mean every last word of it literally.
