Digital Outlook 2017 Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Hon’ble Union Minister of Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice, GoI, said, “The Government is working strongly towards the success of Digital India to Clean India, Energized India and Transformed India.” Some of the key indicators of this are: • Phone Users: From 95 crore phone users in June 2014, India today has 108 crore mobile phone users. • Aadhaar Holders: From 63 crore Aadhaar holders in 2014, India today has 111 crore Aadhaar holders. • Investments in Electronic Manufacturing: Investments in electronic manufacturing which was just Rs.11,000 crore in June 2014 has increased to Rs.1,27,880 crore.

• Mobile Phone Manufacturing Hub: From 6 crore mobile handsets in 2014-15, India’s mobile manufacturing capacity has increased to 11 crore mobile handsets in 2015-16. With 72 new mobile handset and component manufacturing units set up in the last two years, India has emerged as a mobile manufacturing hub. • Common Service Centres: To provide digital services to common people in villages the Common Services Centres were created. In June 2014, only 83,000 such centres were active across the country, which has now increased to 2.05 lakh centres. • Bharat Net: Optical Fibre Network to connect villages of India has seen rapid growth. In June 2014, only 358 kms of optical fibre was laid. In January, 2017 1.72 lakh kms of optical fiber has been laid across more

Digital India to empower society: “IT+IT = IT” Digital India is aimed at transforming the country into a digitallyempowered society and a knowledge economy. The Modi government embarked on an ambitious programme to bridge India’s digital divide, connect thousands of villages to the Internet and create millions of jobs. With an objective to move from e-governance to m-governance. a shift to digital payments has huge benefits for the common man. Already, there is evidence of increased digital transactions. The BHIM app has been launched. It will unleash the power of mobile phones for digital payments and financial inclusion. 125 lakh people have adopted the BHIM app so far. The ambitious “Startup India” programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to fill gaps in the economy for the growth and development of startups and to boost digital entrepreneurship at the grassroots. “Startup India” has brought lots of positivity among the entrepreneurs in India and as of now India has the third-largest number of startups globally. Prime minister Narendra Modi was said , India’s future is dependent on its talent and the right use of technology. It was fully evident during the speech he delivered while activating the Integrated Case Management Information System, available on the Supreme Court website. “IT+IT = IT” was the equation the PM proposed to the audience. The ‘IT’s stand for Information Technology, Indian Talent and India Tomorrow respectively.

“The first Industrial Revolution used water and steam power. The second used electric power to create mass production. The third Industrial Revolution used electronics and IT to automate production, starting in the middle of the last century. In fourth Industrial Revolution, the boundaries are blurring between physical, digital and biological boundaries. The revolution is powered by billions of smartphones, with unprecedented processing power, storage capacity and access to knowledge. The emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence, IoT, 3D printing and quantum computing offer numerous possibilities and Digital India is a step in tapping these transformational technologies, and IT,” said P. P. Chaudhary, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Government of India, underlining the importance of government’s ambitious Digital India programme, especially in the wake of the fourth Industrial Revolution.

“Digitization of payment system would go a long way in checking corruption and exploitation of the poor by moneylenders. With digitization, the poor people would be able to get loans easily instead of approaching moneylenders, who often exploit them. The government is also promoting Aadhaar-enabled payment system in the country to promote digitization of financial services among the general public. Secondly, Common Service Centres (CSCs) are ushering the digital revolution in rural India. ‘Digi Dhan Mela’ is about promoting digital and cashless economy by the use of digital mode of transactions across the country,” said Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
