Back In the Saddle Again,

MAYOR’S WELCOME On behalf of the Santaquin City Council and the Office of the Mayor, I would like to welcome our citizens, friends, and neighbors to this year’s Orchard Days celebration. We have many wonderful events scheduled with all ages and interests in mind. The activities will start on July 31st with a flag raising ceremony followed by the always entertaining Little Buck-A-Roo Rodeo. Throughout the week, we have daily events that you do not want to miss. There is Family Night, Home Run Derby’s, Block Bash for teens, Cornhole tournament, live music, and the ever-popular Hypno Hick. As always, the week of Orchard Days will be wrapped up with the Grand Parade in the morning and the award winning RMPRA Rodeo and Fireworks show to end the night. I encourage you to invite your family, friends, and neighbors out to enjoy our city celebration. I have only mentioned a few of the activities in store, so be sure to check out www.santaquin.org for a complete list of our family friendly events. I want to personally thank John Bradley – Community Services Director, Shauna Jo Eves - Events, Paige Steele - Rodeo, the Orchard Days Committee, recreation crews, and all the many volunteers from throughout our community that have planned this great Orchard Days event. With that said, none of these

great events could have been made possible without the financial support of our many Orchard Days sponsors. I would like to personally thank each sponsor and volunteer that worked to support this year’s Orchard Days event. This is the perfect way to come back together as a community after the worldwide pandemic of the past year. What a great reason to get back out and celebrate with those that we love! I especially love the theme for the Rodeo this year “Back in the Saddle Again”, sweeter words have never been spoken. We are so excited to celebrate Orchard Days with our amazing community. Sincerely, Mayor Kirk Hunsaker

O

YOUTH CITY COUNCIL

ur Santaquin City Youth Council has spent time, since its formation in 2019, participating in various learning opportunities and service projects for the city. They helped out at the city’s Easter Egg Hunt and Teen Flashlight Hunt, spread bark at Orchard Cove Park, helped at the Senior’s Center with the lunch program, helped with the Summer Arts and Games in the park for the Community Services Department, “heart attacked” the city offices, served residents at Seasons of Santaquin senior home, participated in the Christmas light parade, served during Orchard Days, helped spread dirt in the baseball field, and completed random acts of kindness throughout the city. They regularly recognize different departments of the city for their good work. Recently they spent time with our police department and fire department learning skills that will benefit them for life. The YCC was formed with just six members but has grown to twenty members this year. The names of the current members are Ada Broadbent (Mayor), Abby Hales, Brinley Bettis, Brook Hales, Caden Rasmussen, Cole Quigley, Dylan Theil, Gracie Smith, Jaden Wickman, Katelyn Reeves, Keayra Taylor, Lexee Holt, Naomi Rawlinson, Nathan Montoya, Olivia Vincent, Tori Ludlow, Tori Rasmussen, Tyrell Christensen, Allivia Roberts, and Liz Ostler. The YCC Advisors are Betsy Montoya and Suzy McDowell. These teens are a great group of young citizens who are eager to learn about, and participate in, what it takes to keep a city running. Thank you, Youth City Council, for your wonderful volunteer spirit. You are a great example to everyone in our community.

Mike Tishner, Karen Montague & Lisa Wilkey

GRAND MARSHALS

Sponsored by: Chisholm Dentistry

Siblings Karen Montague, Lisa Wilkey and Mike Tischner all grew up in Santaquin. They attended elementary school in the old Santaquin School (the building where the Senior Citizens and Museum are located now). Along with their 5 other siblings, they worked at the familyowned dealership from a young age. They credit their parents for their great examples of hard work and giving time back to their community through service. Eventually only Karen, Lisa and Mike stayed on in full time positions. Karen managed the Parts Department,

Service scheduling and Warranties. Lisa did the accounting and office duties. Mike was the Front Shop Manager. He did so while working full time law enforcement, retiring after 20 years from the Juab County Sheriff ’s Department. Several of their children and nephews also worked there, making them the 4th generation at Tischner Ford. They all love spending time with their families. Annual trips to Moab are something they enjoy doing together-a family tradition for nearly 40 years. Mike enjoys horseback

riding, camping, and hunting. Karen and Lisa like to run and hike, especially spending time in our beautiful canyon. They are hopeful that the canyon road will soon be repaired so that old and new residents alike can once again enjoy the beauty of Santaquin canyon. Throughout the years they have helped with the city celebrations and were very involved with the Santaquin Chamber of Commerce and the many events that the chamber sponsored. Each year they provided the trucks to pull the City Royalty float to other community celebrations, and many

Parade and Rodeo events. They are very appreciative for the support of their spouses, children, parents, and siblings as many long hours were spent working at the dealership. Without the dedication and hard work of their employees it would have been very hard to continue operating the business for so many years. They are so grateful to have been part of Santaquin’s business community for so many years, which made the decision to sell very difficult. They feel very blessed to have had the support of the city government and citizens of this amazing community. What they miss most is the association and friendships built with their awesome customers and employees. They were all like family! They love their small community and the welcoming spirit that is felt here!

She has demonstrated much creativity to fulfill these activities during the Covid 19 pandemic. A few of her service activities have included: a drive to collect cleaning supplies for the local schools; a clothing share for families; thank you cards for care center residents; an online

Kathleen Williams IN MEMORIUM

Kathleen Williams is a proud lifelong resident of Santaquin. She was born July 7th 1936, attended grade school in Santaquin, and graduated from Payson High School in 1954. In high school, she was a cheerleader, and enjoyed being social. After high school she attended Long Beach City College in California to study business. Kathleen soon met her sweetheart Mark Williams and they were married on August 3rd 1956. Together they raised 3 children, Kurtis, Kelly, and Morgan. They have been blessed with 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Kathleen's professional career was at Mountain Bell Telephone Company, from which she retired in 1991. While working full time at Mountain Bell and raising her family, Kathleen decided to pursue her lifelong goal of owning her own business and build her own fast food drive-in. Although she didn’t know anything about the food industry, she did not let that stop her! Kathleen’s determination and hard work led her to approach the challenge with a “watch me!” attitude. In 1977 Kathleen opened the Santa Queen Drive-In. Kathleen would work days at the telephone company and nights at Santa Queen. She worked tirelessly to make Santa Queen a successful food establishment and enjoyed the relationships she made with employees and customers over the years. Recently Kathleen sold the Santa Queen, but still enjoys helping in the kitchen and visiting with customers in her free time. She is proud of the Santa Queen, and the fact that it is one of the longest running drive-ins in the state of Utah is a testament to her determination and creativity. Kathleen is grateful for the opportunity it presented to provide a good place to teach her family the importance of hard work, along with the opportunity to employ many people in the community. It is always a compliment when people tell her they worked at Santa Queen when they were kids, and how that job taught them how to work hard. Santa Queen is a legacy she is proud to see her Grandson continue. Kathleen enjoys serving her community and spent years of service on the Santaquin Chamber of Commerce, where she enjoyed overseeing the annual easter egg hunt. When Kathleen isn’t helping at the Santa Queen, she can be found spending time supporting her children and grandchildren in their hobbies. She also enjoys spending time in Mesquite Nevada, or her cabin in the Sanpete Mountains. She is proud to be from Santaquin.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK

Cody Robbins was born and raised here in Utah County. He got into music at age 15 when he learned to play guitar and sing. He always had interest in music, and fell in love with the 90’s country and classic rock records his dad would listen to. From an early age he took an interest in the lyrical composition of songs and started writing songs himself. Later he partnered up with professional songwriters who helped him hone his craft. Cody lives here in Santaquin with his beautiful wife and their four children and two dogs. They love everything the south valley has to offer, and always looks forward to the Orchard Days festivities. Cody performs across the state of Utah at various venues, and on occasion even leaves the state with a band. We are excited to have him along with his band members, Jason Jones, Kyle McCann, and Hayden Cluff to play at the Orchard Days rodeo on Friday night. Derrick Sprague A Utah born native, his music roots run deep. His grandfather, Bob McCaul, was known for his musical talent and performing. Leaving a legacy for Derrick, one of his grandfather’s songs hit the music charts next to Elvis Presley in the 50s. As a young man, Derrick was known for captivating audiences with his Michael Jackson dance impersonations. He performed at a Utah Jazz half time show, along with many other venues. His love for music, dancing and song writing have been a common thread throughout his life. He picked up his first guitar when he was 14 and wrote his first song at the age of 16. Music became his passion as he followed in his grandfather’s footsteps. He was also inspired by artists like: Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and Matchbox Twenty. In his adult years, Derrick began to focus more on his own music. His true passion has always been in writing and composing songs. This self-taught musician began finding his own style, along with recording his own music. His musical style is a mixture of old and new. Part of his appeal is his ability

PRE RODEO CONCERTS

Country artist Clayton Smalley is the epitome of Merle Haggard’s “Working Man Blues”. Other than the nine kids Merle references, the song could be the Spanish Fork, Utah based singer-songwriter’s autobiography. A welder by trade, Clayton, a blue collar family man, is a throwback to when artists balanced the responsibilities of working, helping provide for a family, and pursuing a passion for music. Born and raised in Southern California, Clayton grew up listening to artists like George Strait, Keith Whitley and Reba McEntire, which galvanized his love of traditional country music. As a teen he discovered his ability to sing, and with the encouragement of his friends and family, began singing publicly in church musicals and school talent shows. By his early 20s Clayton was fronting a local country cover band and singing karaoke every chance he could get. This is also when he began trying his hand at songwriting, even recording a CD of original songs. At age 22 Clayton married his wife, Shannon, and with the birth of their daughter, Cheyeanne, made the decision to focus on raising a family and put music on hold. A few years later their son Austin would arrive, completing their family of four. In 2018, with both kids in their teens, Clayton began to rekindle his pursuit of music by starting a YouTube channel and Facebook artist page where he quickly grew an online fan base by posting covers of his favorite country songs. Around the same time, Clayton formed the band Nebo Road. Along with playing regionally at fairs and festivals the band opened for national touring acts such as Charlie Worsham and Ned Ledoux. In February 2019 Clayton friended Nashville songwriter John Griffin from an Instagram follow recommendation. The two teamed up and began weekly co-writing sessions over FaceTime. By July Clayton had enough songs to travel to Nashville and record a debut EP. Whiskey Sunrise, produced by music veteran David Flint, was released on November 1st , and with the support of his fans, debuted at #11 on the iTunes Country Albums chart. The EP was also selected by the iTunes editorial team for feature on iTunes Country Main Page and Apple Music. Songs from Whiskey Sunrise have received airplay across the country and abroad and the EP was even named by Country Music France as one of the Top 10 Country Music EP’s of 2019. Utah-based Nashville recording artist Clayton Smalley brings the party to every fair and festival he plays. His family friendly shows are a mix of traditional and contemporary country that appeals to a wide variety of music lovers.

Sponsored by: D. R. Horton

RODEO EVENTS BAREBACK RIDING— SPONSORED BY MICHELLE MENDENHALL-SPERRY EQUITY REALTY

Bareback riding is one of the most physically demanding events in rodeo. A bareback rider sits directly on a buckin horse with only his own “riggin’” to hang on to. As the horse comes out of the chute, the cowboy’s feet must be above the break of the horse’s shoulders. He holds his feet up at least through the horse’s first move, usually a jump, then spurs the horse on each jump, matching the horse’s rhythm and showing control rather than flopping around. He may not touch the horse, his equipment or himself with his free hand. If the ride lasts eight seconds, two judges award up to 25 points each for the cowboy’s “exposure” to the strength of the horse and his spurring technique and up to 25 points each for the horse’s bucking strength and moves.

TIE-DOWN ROPING— SPONSORED BY STAKER PARSON Calf Roping, or Tie-Down Roping, is an authentic ranch chore and the oldest of rodeo’s timed events. To start this sprinting event, the tie-down roper and his horse back into the box; the cowboy carries a rope in one hand and a “piggin’ string” in his mouth. When the cowboy nods, the chute opens and the calf gets a head start. The cowboy throws a loop over its head; his horse stops and pulls the rope taut while the cowboy jumps off, dashes down the rope, lays the calf on the ground and uses the piggin’ string to tie any three of its legs together. Then he lifts his hands to show he is finished, and the field flag judge drops a flag to stop the clock. The horse is trained to keep the rope taut until the cowboy remounts and moves the horse toward the calf, giving the rope slack. If the calf’s legs stay tied correctly for six seconds, it’s a qualified run and the time stands.

BREAKAWAY ROPING— SPONSORED BY TACO BELL PAYSON

Breakaway roping is a variation of calf roping where a calf is roped, but not thrown and tied. A light rope is fastened from the chute to the calf’s neck, releasing once the calf is well away from the chute and releasing the barrier, which is used to ensure that the calf gets a head start. Once the barrier has released, the horse runs out of the box while the roper attempts to throw a lasso around the neck of the calf. Once the rope is around the calf’s neck, the roper signals the horse to stop suddenly. The rope is tied to the saddle horn with a string. When the calf hits the end of the rope, the rope is pulled tight and the string breaks. The breaking of the string marks the end of the run. The fastest run wins.

SADDLE BRONC RIDING— SPONSORED BY RALLYSTOP

In rodeo’s classic event, the saddle bronc rider sits on a specialized saddle – it has no horn, and the stirrups are set forward. In the chute, the cowboy adjusts his grip on the rein and perhaps the horse’s position. When the gate opens, his boots must be above the breaks of the horse’s shoulders. After the horse’s first move, usually a jump, the cowboy begins spurring in long, smooth strokes in sync with the horse’s jumps – legs straight when the bronc comes down, toward the back of the saddle at the top of the jump. His only handhold is a six-foot braided rope; his free hand may not touch his equipment, his body or the horse. If the ride lasts the required eight seconds, it is scored by two judges – one on each side – who assess difficulty and control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.

STEER WRESTLING—SPONSORED BY REAMS BOOTS & JEANS

Steer wrestling demands coordination between two mounted cowboys – the contestant and a hazer who controls the steer’s direction – and their horses. The cowboys back their horses into the box on each side of the steer. When the contestant nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start before the cowboys start to chase him. As the steer wrestler draws even, he dismounts from his horse, which is moving at perhaps 30 miles an hour. He grasps the steer’s horns and digs his boot heels into the dirt to slow down the 500- to 600-pound steer. Then he wrestles the steer onto its side; when all four legs point in the same direction, the clock stops. Times vary widely depending on the size of the arena.

TEAM ROPING— SPONSORED BY CENTRAL UTAH SHEET METAL

Team roping is the only team event in rodeo. This event also originated from ranch chores. Team ropers work as partners: one header and one heeler who move in precise coordination. They and their horses start in the “box.” When the header nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start. The header throws the first loop, which must catch the steer’s head or horns, protected by a horn wrap. Then the header dallies – wraps his rope around his saddle horn – and moves his horse to pull the rope taut, changing the direction of the steer. That gives the heeler the opportunity to catch both of the steer’s hind legs with his own rope. Most heelers try to time their throws to catch the legs when they are in the air. After the catch, the heeler also dallies to stop the steer. When the ropes are taut and both horses face the steer, the time is recorded. Times vary widely depending on the size of the arena.

BARREL RACING— KEENEYE FAMILY VISION

Barrel racing is just that – a race against time in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels set up in the arena. A rider can choose to begin the cloverleaf pattern to the right or left. The time begins when the horse and rider cross the predetermined start line and stops when they come back across the same line. Each run is timed to the hundredths of a second, making every fraction of a second count. (Starting in 2012, Canadian rodeos now time to the thousandth of a second.) Each tipped-over barrel adds a five-second penalty to the time. Although barrel racing is an event common to many professional rodeos, it is administered by a separate organization, the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

BULL RIDING— SPONSORED BY BIG O TIRES SANTAQUIN

Bull riding is rodeo’s most dangerous event. In the chute, the bull rider settles on the bull’s back, wraps his braided rope around the bull’s girth, then loops the rope around his hand and back into his palm so he can grip it tightly. When he nods, the gate is opened and the bull lunges out of the chute. Spurring is optional – the primary goal for the cowboy is to stay on for eight seconds without touching himself, his equipment or the bull with his free hand. The cowboy will be scored highly for staying in the middle of the bull and in full control of the ride. If the ride lasts the required eight seconds, it is scored by two judges who assess difficulty (the bull’s spinning, jumping and kicking, lunging, rearing and dropping, and side-to-side motion) as well as the cowboy’s degree of control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.
