City Note /////////
M
urrieta is a city with an economic development strategy. What does this mean? It means that we would rather guide the development of our city to be what we envision it for future generations rather than just letting growth happen without a plan. It is a great thing for Murrieta! Patience and hard work on the part of our Economic Development Team has yielded healthy growth for the city while attracting the industries we sought to share our beloved community with. The reason for helping to shape the growth of our city in a specific way is to attract businesses that will offer high quality jobs, so that more people can work where they live. Murrieta has an educated population, which helps to draw high tech, science, and healthcare related industries. The opening of the Loma Linda Medical Center – Murrieta, was a huge milestone. Other developments in healthcare coming our way are a Kaiser healthcare campus, HealthSouth Brain Rehabilitation Hospital, and Rady Children’s Hospital medical offices. We are honored to be the home of these high caliber healthcare services that will benefit the entire region! Up until now, Murrieta has boasted only one local hotel. Comfort Suites has been wonderful for those visiting our community and we are pleased to see the progress

Hampton Inn will begin construction in the next few months. The largest CarMax in the Country in underway near Walmart and will be the “flagship” store for the company. They loved that Murrieta was a great regional location centered between San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles and the desert. Additionally, Murrieta residents will gain several more local dining options over the next few months. The Mill, in Historical Downtown, has expanded their patio seating, nearly doubling its size. Across the street, the Public House is nearly complete. The Hat (known for their Pastrami sandwiches) will open near Sam’s Club, while

Welcome 2015!
Are you looking forward to this bright and shiny new year like I am? It’s like opening a fresh notebook. No writing, scribbles, or eraser marks... It will become whatever you make it: a journal, a book of drawings, a bucket list or whatever you decide. What will you do with your blank slate? Make some plans this year! Really think about some of the things you want to accomplish and write them down. If you need some inspiration, read the adventure story by “Superhuman” Nick on page 19! It makes me want to schedule a little more adventure into my own life! (Now that the thrilling adventure of starting a business is beginning to feel more “normal.”) If 2015 is looking like it may hold some challenges for you, take heart! We have all been through trying times and if you open up a bit, others will step up to help you through your difficulties. Challenges build strength and give understanding and compassion for others! Just ask the Thundstrom Family (page 12), who have built a happy life despite the health challenges of Lyme disease. Their ability to find the bright side in trying times has helped others to focus on the positive as well. Finally, I would like to thank you, Murrieta, for graciously welcoming this magazine into your homes and hearts. Our advertisers have been surprised with the number of responses and people who talk about seeing them in these pages. It’s been such a joy connecting neighbors, businesses, schools, events, and the city right here in My Murrieta Magazine. Everyone who has any role with My Community Magazines, has felt how special our community is… not just through the stories we present, but by the response we get from readers and advertisers. We have so many warm and caring people here. In this busy world, it feels great to slow your pace and take a little time to feel connected to your community! Go ahead now and read for a little burst of sunshine from your neighbors! Your Neighbor,

“Recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of America’s Financial Leaders!”
A
Feature /////////
By Mike Broemmel
t the age of 32, Duane Johnson laid in a hospital bed contemplating how he would continue to support himself. After a failed kidney transplant in 2000, Duane was spending 3 days a week on dialysis. The uncomfortable treatments lasted seven years while he awaited another kidney. As Duane contemplated his situation, he realized that it was absolutely necessary that he start his own business if he wanted to continue working rather than living life on disability. Thus the Duane Johnson Group, a financial, retirement and income planning business, was literally started from his hospital bed. How impressive that 14 years later, in April, 2014, the Duane Johnson Group was recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of “America’s Financial Leaders!” Hailing originally from Montana, Duane did not come to California with the idea of starting and running his own financial planning company; rather, his deep desire to be independent and successful gave him purpose. Just four years before Duane’s kidney transplant failed, he had been introduced to the financial and insurance industry. “I knew I couldn’t hold an eight to five job,” Duane explained. “I had lots of experience in this industry to fall back on. So, I decided it was now or never to start my own business.” Soon, he began conducting seminars and seeing clients between his treatments. While his clients were often much older than he, Duane was able to identify with them in their need for financial stability and to make sure that their families would be financially secure should they pass. The fact that he could relate so well to his clientele through his own
uncertain situation really put him in a position to lead by example and to advise. Duane never realized that his health challenges, would give him such insight into planning for the unknown. Since its inception, the Duane Johnson Group has been dedicated to establishing meaningful relationships with its clients. These types of connections require time and focused dedication. Although his medical problems presented a challenge for him during the early years of his firm’s operations, Duane’s attentiveness to clients, quickly made him stand out amongst his competition.
Duane’s wife, Laura, was amazed to see him so focused on his business and impressed by his ability to be so positive during those trying years when he was on dialysis. She always gave her full support to him and the business. Trust is such a key component of any financial business, so it was just natural that Laura stepped in as the office manager when the company started. Laura has taken on many roles over their 14 years in business and one of the biggest is marketing through community outreach. Putting on free educational seminars in the community has been a great tool to help people of all ages understand retirement and financial planning. MyMurrietaMag.com |

//////// Feature Early on, the Duane Johnson Group developed the Retirement Financial Boot Camp as a resource for people in need of effective, tailored strategies for their golden years. The Boot Camps provide comprehensive information and resources for people who are retired or contemplating their retirement. These include strategies designed to assist with: • Retirement planning • Income planning • Tax planning • Risk management The Boot Camp seminars have been widely received in the Inland Empire since Duane started them in 2000. The Duane Johnson Group as a team, have a considerable depth of experience and knowledge in regard to financial and retirement planning. Seminars attendees have reported that they felt more in control of their futures once they understood what needs to plan for. This is the start for many in developing their own personalized financial, retirement, and tax planning strategy. By providing this free resource to the community to assist them in planning for the future, the team is able to educate and answer specific questions. This is the foundation on which trust is developed with individuals over time and without pressure. Seeing how things are done first hand and being involved in the process has led many attendees to become clients of the Duane Johnson Group. The financial and retirement planning industry is highly competitive. This is particularly the case as Baby Boomers are entering their golden years. The Baby Boomer generation is proving to be the largest number of men and women in retirement than at any point in U.S. history. There are many finan8

cial and retirement planning outfits vying for a portion of this aging market niche. It’s comforting to know that one of “America’s Financial Leaders” is right here in Murrieta! In discussing with Duane what makes his business stand apart from so many others he related that developing a personal rapport with each client is the key to the firm’s success. “I would not want anyone to feel like a number,” he explains. Besides Duane, the firm boasts other well-trained professionals, each of whom delivers the same personal service that has become the hallmark of the group. In addition to Duane and Laura, the firm includes two independent agents, as well as a tax specialist. “The goal is to provide customers with comprehensive, reliable services available from one location,” explains Laura. “We are always looking for ways to provide more for our clients to add value.” In 2014, the Duane Johnson Group hosted their first annual “After-Tax Party” at the South Coast Winery Resort and Spa.
Duane believes it’s important to show his appreciation to his clients and to interact in a more informal setting. He believes this really strengthens the connection between the clients and the professional team. After the terrific feedback on the event, the group decided to make it an ongoing tradition. Building these personal connections with clients is fulfilling to everyone on the team. The drive to live life on his own terms combined with a high degree of integrity have been the key components in Duane’s business success. He made the choice to act 14 years ago rather than allowing his health issues to set the course of his life. In doing so, he did not just build a future for his own family; he helped numerous others build a healthy financial future for their families as well! The Duane Johnson Group is looking forward to helping many more of their Murrieta neighbors prepare for the future in 2015!

I have been a resident and Realtor in the Murrieta area for over 8 years and proud to call Twin Cities Realty my professional home. I take personal pride in working closely with each and every client and listening to their specific needs. My experience as an appraiser really sets me apart from other agents. I enjoy spending time with my eight wonderful grandchildren as well as sewing, quilting and crocheting. Besides donating quilts and blankets to families in need, I have a special place in my heart for seniors and look out for those who have no one else. I believe we all have the ability to make a difference in a neighbor's life whether it is giving someone a ride to a doctor's appointment or bringing over dinner when someone is sick. These small acts of kindness are what make a city a community or a cluster of homes a neighborhood. I would love to be of service to YOU too!

he life of a fourteen year old is often filled with school, sports, hobbies, etc. Bethany Anne Argerake has a life full of typical teenage activities, but the hobby dearest to her heart is reading. Bethany read the most pages during the “Read for a Reason” reading program at the Murrieta Public Library to benefit Animal Friends of the Valley. The fundraiser, sponsored by Dr. Laurie Blanscet, raised a penny for every page read by participants over a six-week period. Bethany raised the most money for the shelter by reading 7500 pages in a total of 21 books! “To be honest, I completely forgot about the contest,” she says candidly. “Even I was shocked to see how much I read.”

Bethany is the oldest of four children and started reading at four years of age. Soon Bethany’s mom, Amy, was taking all of the kids to the library to keep up with Bethany’s voracious appetite for books. “The library is a blessing to serve all their reading tastes as they mature,” says Amy. “There’s no way I could have afforded all of those books for Bethany, let alone for my other children too.” Her parents feel that having a library card from an early age has helped their children develop responsibility. Each has been responsible for caring for their borrowed books and returning them on time. As a student at Vista Murrieta High School Bethany excels in her English classes, plays the flute in marching band, and participates in Girl Scouts. Bethany’s parents are very pleased with the school’s emphasis on the arts and the excellent band program. Bethany’s activity in marching band has allowed her see a side of the football team many at her school don’t. “After home games, the team personally thanks us (the band) for our service,” she relates. “I love my school!” Although she describes herself as a reserved person, Bethany has connected with others through her hobbies and interests. Several of her friends who share her love of reading have started an informal book club where they exchange books, share stories, and expand each other’s book repertoire. Bethany was happy to help raise money for the local animal shelter by doing something she really enjoys! The proceeds of the program provided food and emergency veterinary care to homeless pets at Animal Friends of the Valley. Reading for a reason is a fabulous way to expand a child’s mind and heart!

Rising Above Circumstance
The Thunstroms By Brittany Rose
They started out like a typical couple; Paige and Bryan Thunstrom met at Brigham Young University, attended the same church and both had a love for outdoor adventure. But something very abnormal occurred in their first year of marriage that turned their “typical” life upside down.
A complete medical anomaly occurred as Bryan and Paige began to experience a range of symptoms including arthritis. Both Paige and Bryan lost a tremendous amount of

weight, endured severe fatigue and dealt with some tremendous upper extremity pain. As they searched for answers, they were eventually diagnosed with Lyme Disease, a very rare condition. Paige was pregnant with their first child and the excitement of being a new mom came with extra challenges as the doctors treated her Lyme disease while caring for the unborn baby. Lyme disease is transmitted by deer tick and is not as common on the west coast as in other areas. It’s reported that only one percent of deer tick carry Lyme disease. The young college graduates watched their dreams turn to thin air as their ailing health consumed them. Their life became limited while
both of them could not use their hands, arms, or even stand for long periods of time. Their activities and careers came to a halt as they focused on finding a cure to their medical ailments. Paige and Bryan went to countless specialists, took an array of medications and traveled all over the United States for experimental treatments. Once their first son Mason was born, their extended family and friends all pitched in to help the young family to cope and find answers to their curious disease. “Honestly, I’m grateful we were sick together,” Paige explains. “It was so frustrating to understand what Bryan was going through, until my symptoms worsened. We grew
Local Family ///////// very close during this experience.” In the last few years, the couple began responding to treatment and making strides toward better health. Paige went back to work and the glimmer of hope couldn’t have come at a better time, as Paige became pregnant with their second son Owen. She regained her ability to use her hands allowing her to cook, drive, and carry items. “I really appreciate the simple things in life after what we went through,” Paige explains. “Being able to use my hands to hold and care for our kids, hold a book, throw a ball is a blessing after depending on others for help with these simple tasks!” Bryan too has made progress and while his improvement was not as dramatic as Paige’s, he has been able to participate in the daily activi-
ties of being a father. Recently the dedicated couple welcomed baby girl, Mikelle, into their family. The two boys are excellent big brothers and have learned to help out to lighten their parent’s load. “Things may not always work out as planned, but things will work out,” Bryan says cheerfully. “People often say how positive we are, but the fact is, we have a beautiful life and are very happy.” Despite the hardships they have faced together, they have found comfort and peace in one of their favorite quotes from Orson F. Whitney: “No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility.” The Thunstrom Family has learned to stick together, help each
other along the way, and to serve others. Their ability to maintain a positive outlook has been a bright example for all who know them.

New Habits for a New Year By Valerie Scola, DDS
I
t’s that time of year again. The holiday decorations have been put away and the sweet treats are finally gone. We have barely had enough time to relax and unwind when suddenly the new year is upon us. What goals do you have this year? Are you making any New Year’s Resolutions? Here are a few ideas that will not only help with your oral health, but can really jump start you into a healthy, prosperous 2015. Eat healthier – adding more whole fruits and veggies to your diet will do wonders for your teeth and body. Some fruits and vegetables, such as apples, are natural abrasives, which help remove plaque from your teeth. Dairy and cheese have very low acidity so your teeth don’t wear down as fast. They are also a great source of calcium, which helps to strengthen your teeth. Colorful
vegetables and fruit also fight cancer, and with an abundant supply of vibrant colors, you can cut your chances of some cancers in half. Take your time to research how many ways you can cut cancer risk, improve gum health and whiten your teeth with a variety of foods, while also enjoying the fresh flavors of locally farmed organic foods. Drink (more) water – If you already drink water throughout the day, good for you! It’s so important to keep your body well-hydrated. If you drink a lot of sugary drinks, trying swapping at least one out for a glass of water. If you can’t make the switch completely, at least follow up your drink with some water. This will rinse away a lot of the sugars from your teeth and also neutralize any acids left behind from sodas or sports drinks. Start flossing – Yes, there really are huge benefits to flossing daily. Flossing removes the plaque and food the sits in between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. As with any new habit, give it an honest effort for three weeks. You’ll notice a big difference in how smooth and clean your teeth feel. This will also diminish and sometimes eliminate bleeding gums. It’s never too late to start! Keep up regular dental visits for yourself and your kids – we all get busy with the day to day activities and six months can get
away from us in a hurry! Now is the perfect time to check your calendar and make sure you have your next exam and cleaning scheduled. By getting checked regularly, problems can be detected when they are small, before they turn into something big. If you haven’t been in for a while, now is a great time to get back on track! Smile more – it’s contagious! Even if you are feeling blue, you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you share your smile with others. Your smile is unique to you, so share it with family, friends, and everyone around you! Find a way to give back – No, this won’t improve your teeth, but I guarantee it will add to your quality of life. No matter how big or small the gesture – a hug, a smile, a donation – find a way to spread a little kindness this year. You’ll be glad you did. Here’s wishing you a healthy, happy, wonderful 2015!

Primal Cravings:
The Taste Of Good Health By Tracy Blanscet
Six years ago, Lea Roberts, did something that changed her life! She had been working out at a CrossFit Gym and committed to a “Whole 30 Paleo Challenge.”

For 30 days she cut out all packaged foods, opting for “clean” meats, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats. She felt so amazing after only two weeks that she became a passionate advocate of the lifestyle. As an active competitor in CrossFit, Lea was around a lot of athletes and others who were working to stay healthy and fit. She constantly heard others complain that they didn’t know how to cook this way or that they didn’t have the time to cook from scratch. Lea loved cooking and found it was easy for her to transition to preparing Paleo meals for her family using fresh, natural foods. She had many friends who wanted her to prepare their meals, and soon she talked to the owner of a gym about an idea to prepare and deliver paleo meals to others. He absolutely loved her idea and gave his full support from
Center Feature ///////// the get-go. In fact, he became one of her first customers. When Lea started Primal Cravings three years ago she did everything herself: planning the menu, cooking, portioning, packaging and delivery. As a recently divorced mom to her three young children, there was no other option but to succeed. “In the beginning, I remember bundling up the kids and packing them into the car while it was still dark, so we could deliver the meals before people woke up,” Lea remembers. Three years later, Lea has six kitchen staff and seven drivers who all pitch in to help run the business. Lea shares, “It’s hard to balance being a single mom, running a business and finding time for myself, but I have learned to walk away from the computer and my phone to spend time with my kids. They will only be young once and I don’t want the time to pass us by.” Lea started with about 20 clients, but as the word spread about Primal Cravings, her business has increased by leaps and bounds over it’s duration! They have moved into a commercial kitchen in Murrieta and have grown their services to include grab and go items as well as catering. Although her original clients were members of her gym and competitive athletes, she is glad to see a more diverse population taking advantage of her service as more people become educated about the health benefits of the Paleo Diet. “We are starting to work with all different types of clients and I love that,” Lea explains. “This includes single guys that don’t know how to cook, working moms trying to squeeze in everything they need to do, people with health problems who have no choice but to eat healthier, and especially the average working people who just don’t have enough hours in the day.” It is not cheap to eat high quality, healthy foods. A person converting to buying organic produce and eggs, grass-fed meats, and healthy oils and fats could see their grocery bill double or triple! Primal Cravings is able to keep costs affordable by purchasing in
bulk for their clients. “I added up all of my receipts for a week of preparing my own paleo meals and realized what a great value, Primal Cravings was,” says Eric Salcedo, owner of Boombox CrossFit. “I’ve been an avid supporter of Lea’s ever since. Her meals have really helped or clients at the gym to eat better and see results.”
In the kitchen, Lea is proud to have assembled a talented team of chefs. She had worked with head chef, Harvey Dickerson, in the real estate industry years before, so when she ran into him after he graduated culinary school, they already knew they worked well together. Johnny Lewis-Gill, grew up in Trinidad, so he brings a Caribbean influence, incorporating a lot of the unique flavors and spices that clients often compliment. Pedro works hard to create all of the delicious house-made sauces and dressings with no additives or preservatives. (The paleo ranch dressing is to die-for!) The baked goods are prepared by Kiara and Andrea Maue, who is known locally for winning the Food Network show, Cupcake Wars. This appealing combination of cooks has kept a lot of variety and flavor in the meals and clients raving. Lea has really given her all to this business, but getting such positive feedback is what has kept her going when things have been tough. “I love getting the emails about people losing weight or getting off of medications,” she explains. “So many people say that they have more time with their families or for themselves because their meal prep is done for them. They’re eating foods they would have never eaten prior to Primal Cravings and that
Go Paleo! You may have heard of the “Paleo Diet,”(aka caveman diet) but it’s not a diet at all. It’s really a lifelong way of eating that promotes health and longevity. This ideology focuses on eating like our ancestors did. Since it’s based on real foods, rather than packaged products made in a factory, there are no additives, preservatives, or chemicals. The Paleo Diet incorporates high quality, healthy fats, such as coconut, olive and avocado oils, which provide anti-inflammatory benefits. All of the fresh fruits and vegetables provide the body with anti-oxidants, helping to protect you from those annoying free radicals that cause damage to your cells and can lead to cancer. Overall this lifestyle helps to balance blood glucose, create leaner muscles, reduce inflammation, and prevent disease. Because there are no grains, refined sugar, or sugar substitues, there is no inflammation caused by wheat or gluten and no empty carbs that can add excess weight to your frame. Paleo advocates say that they feel fuller longer, sleep better, and have more energy. They like that there is no counting calories or measuring portions. The problem is our own personal habits are so ingrained; it can be hard to make the switch to cooking with whole foods. And, grains seem to be in everything! (That’s because grains are a cheap filler.) Grains, (especially corn) are used to fatten livestock… and they have the same effect on people. This is why one of the side effects of eating Paleo is weight loss. We challenge you to try out the Paleo Diet for the next 30 days and let us know how you feel! MyMurrietaMag.com |

As you set your goals for the new year, working out may be at the top of your list, but 80% of your body composition is determined by what you eat! It’s much easier to cut out certain foods then to try to exercise them away. Changing your diet will have the most impact on your body inside and out! Of course, really living the Paleo Lifestyle means you will also be active. As the saying goes, “Eat well, play well, and stay well!”

I have personally been using Primal Cravings for 6-8 weeks now and can't speak highly enough about the program! I have lost 11lbs and cut from 13.5% down to 10% body fat in this short amount of time. Many of our fitness clients are now jumping on board and having the food delivered to them as well now. It takes the guesswork out of eating and allows you to eat Paleo and have portioned meals each day of the week! Highly recommend! Josh Hubby Owner P4L Fitness, Temecula On September 8, 2013 I could tell you the entire caloric content of any food product almost from memory. On September 9, 2013 I discovered Primal Cravings and found out I no longer had to. I WAS that girl that ran half marathons and did hours on the stair climber hoping to "work off" last night's dinner. Today I can tell you I am the calmest I have been when it comes to eating "what-
ever I want" and the most relaxed I've EVER been with my weight and size. I discovered that eating 1500 calories of junk, (corn, processed flour and the like) meant absolutely nothing and left me hungry after an hour, which then led to binge eating after a couple of days due to simply starving my body of the key ingredients it needed to live and flourish. I spent 15 years of my life trying to do what her food did in 15 days… gave me peace of mind with my struggle to find balance between sweating off calories versus eating the right things for my body. I struggled for so long trying to always write down exactly what I was eating, not realizing it wasn't how much I was eating but WHAT I was eating. I smile as I open my front door on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and see my favorite package at my front door, all ready for me. Thank you, Primal Cravings and thank you, Lea! Patricia Schuler

Dear Dr. Blanscet, I’m a 45-year old woman and for the last year I have not really been feeling all that great. I don’t feel sick or anything, I just don’t feel right. I have gained about 15 pounds in 12 months. I often have trouble sleeping now, which was never a problem before. I’m tired a lot lately and get headaches more than what I think is normal. I’m not really interested in intimacy with my husband and we seem to be arguing a lot. I just feel like things are off. When I told my primary doctor this, he did some tests and said everything is fine. Is this just a normal part of aging? -Sarah H. Sarah, After going through some of those symptoms myself, I decided to get further education on bioidentical hormones and healthy aging. Helping men and women achieve optimal health is something I’m very passionate about. When a primary doctor looks at your blood tests, they are often only checking to see whether your results are “normal.” The problem is, in our society “normal” is based on people who are overweight, fatigued and in general, not feeling that great. You don’t necessarily want to be normal; you want optimal health. Trust your intuition. If you are feeling like your body is “off,” then it probably is. If you’re doctor isn’t trained in bioidentical hormones, you should really find someone who is. Bioidentical hormones are usually plant based and are made to be biologically equivalent to the natural hormones your body produces. It just makes sense that a product with the exact chemical structure as your body makes will be safer and more effective. Problems that are associated with hormonal changes in females include a decrease in energy, trouble going to sleep or staying asleep, night sweats, low libido, weight gain, migraines, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, a general feeling of malaise, and more. Men share many of these same symptoms as they experience hormonal changes.

Experts in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy strive to achieve optimal results by working with each individual's unique biochemistry. Every person is different and will receive a plan customized to their needs. It takes time to properly evaluate your symptoms, interpret your lab work, and be educated on treatments. There are several ways to restore hormone balance in men and women: creams, oral capsules, implanted pellets, etc. It is unfortunate, but current medical insurances do not cover the expense of a proper hormone consultation and treatment. This may change in the future, but if you are experiencing hormonal imbalance, it’s best not to wait. Feel free to come and learn more at our free hormone discussion for women held each month. New Year – New Rules
//////// ATE / Your Taxes
T
By Smith Marion & Co. CPAs
he beginning of each new year always seems to be accompanied by new tax rules. The most important changes to consider when calculating your taxes for 2014 are new depreciation rules that affect ALL U.S. taxpayers with tangible property. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) warns that those who do not follow these guidelines will be at a greater risk of being audited. While this situation may be a potential headache for many, a knowledgeable tax professional, can spare you the stress, meet all the requirements and may even save you money using the new rules!
New Rules The IRS is requiring that all business entities have a written accounting procedure (dated January 1, 2014) stating their capitalization policy of $500.00 unless accompanied by an audit from an independent CPA. If no written policy is on file, the presumed capitalization is $250. This is to be considered a change in accounting methods and while the change will be automatically approved, reporting it on form 3115 is required.
This rule applies to all units of tangible, valuable property. The taxpayer must determine whether a piece of property is a separate unit or part of a whole system. The original definition of repairs was “that which increased the value of the property, made the property more useful, lengthened the property’s life, or adapted the property to a new or different use.” The new rules break this down into more detailed descriptions.
What does this mean for ME? If your tax return contains a Schedule C or Schedule E, this new regulation applies to you. Schedule C is used for taxpayers involved in a trade or business for profit, but are not organized as a partnership or corporation. Schedule E is used for taxpayers who have rental property. Because of the new regulations, many of these taxpayers will need to make some changes to comply with the new regulations. These changes must be made this year (tax year 2014). For instance, some taxpayers have capitalized computer printers costing less than $250 because of
type of equipment purchased. The taxpayer is depreciating this over 5 years. Because this falls within the IRS guidelines as a de minimis expense, and based on the new regulations, the entire balance left to depreciate can and should be taken as an expense in this year. This is seen by the IRS as a change in accounting method and must be done on form 3115. Other taxpayers in previous years, have written off as repairs and maintenance items that should have been capitalized, such as re-roofing a rental property or replacing new engines in business vehicles. Again, based on the new regulations, these items should not have been expensed, but should have been capitalized and depreciated over their useful lives. This again is seen by the IRS as a change in accounting method and must be done on form 3115. Our best advice is to make sure you talk to your tax professional early to make sure all information and research on past accounting and tax practices fall into the new guidelines.

Captain Clinton Norton
PUTTING OUT FIRES
W
hen Clinton Norton joined the Murrieta Fire Department in 2005, he reached a goal he had since boyhood. He had always wanted to follow in the footsteps of his Battalion Chief dad, riding in a big red fire rig and protecting his community. He started learning more about becoming a firefighter when he joined the North County Fire Protection District Fire Explorer Program, but seeing his father’s example instilled his solid work ethic. In 2014, Clinton was named the Firefighter of the Year by the Murrieta Chamber of Commerce! Last year, the fire department met to discuss how to maintain emergency services without funding specifically marked for paramedic services. Clinton came up with an exceptional plan called the “Paramedic Subscription Program.” The program allows households and businesses to purchase a subscription for unlimited paramedic services at a low annual rate. This win-win solution has allowed the department to maintain their paramedic services for emergency services while providing those with the need for advanced life support to better afford the
“2014 Firefighter of the Year” services. As always, basic life support is provided to the community at no cost, however people with medical problems requiring frequent paramedic services can save hundreds to thousands of dollars. Individuals and families may participate and the cost is not dependent on household size. Businesses may also participate however their annual rate is dependent on the amount of employees they have. The affordable, subscription is usually under $100 rather than the typical service fee for an advanced visit which is dependent on the service provided and ranges at several hundred dollars. This program is not mandatory and should someone need para-
medics, who has not purchased this plan, they can pay per use, like an ambulance. “This is the last business that is still mandated to make house calls,” Clinton relates. Clinton’s plan has been instrumental in helping to manage the cost of maintaining exceptional services in the face of diminishing dollars. The program has been well received by Murrieta residents. This cost recovery program has changed the fire industry, setting an example for other municipalities struggling with similar budget problems. Clinton has made a career of putting out fires; but The Paramedic Subscription Program may be the biggest fire he’s put out for Murrieta. His leadership, is a welcome skill in our city’s Fire Department. Captain Clinton Norton is an asset to the department and the community. MyMurrietaMag.com |

“Happiness is a funny thing. It’s tangible and easily felt. Like a snowflake, one minute it’s on the tip of your nose, the next moment it can melt away.” By Brittany Rose
now-life was new to me, so it was no surprise that I slid and fell on the icy path while on the way to the car. I was wearing boots (well… California boots)… but there, in Sweden, they might as well have been ice skates. It had snowed the night before and the powder was three feet high! It shined like glitter and covered everything. The scenery was completely foreign to me. Crash, SMASH! A huge icicle fell from the roof and stabbed the ground next to me. My friend walked passed me and threw me a disappointed glance, “Gotta watch out for those things… they kill two people a year,” he said. Eskilstuna was a long way from San Diego in more ways than one. We were on the road by 5 am, ready for the two-day trip to The Ice Hotel. This overpriced igloo is just 24

north of the Arctic Circle. After four hours of endless trees and counting moose crossings, it was time for lunch. (Much to my chagrin, there was never a moose sighting. Apparently, they don’t bother to read the signs.) We stopped in a college town where the kids were starting school and the small village streets were full of people. We ate our homemade tuna sandwiches in the car. With full stomachs and happy hearts we were ready for… more trees. My friend started the engine and right on cue the perfect song came on, “Because I’m haaapppy. Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.” The Swede sang along, bobbing his head, which he only did on rare, delightful occasions, “Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth…” We sang along, “Because I’m haaappeeey!” Suddenly my driver hit the
brakes so hard I thought we hit a wall. He honked his horn angrily. My eyes adjusted to see a young man in a hoodie, wearing headphones, standing two inches from our car. The clueless kid looked up in horror, the horn still blaring, and made his way to the sidewalk in a startled daze. I looked toward the driver’s seat; my normally gentle Swede was red-faced and sputtering, “Get out of the way!” I remained silent as his rant continued about this young man’s carelessness for important traffic laws. Finally he fell silent, the radio continued “…because I’m happeeeeeey….” The air was tight; I turned toward my friend and with a puppylike nudge and smiled gently. He broke into a giggle and I did too. “How silly that was,” he said. “I think I overreacted.” In one moment we were happily singing like free
The Window Seat ///////// birds and the next moment that sentiment was sucked away... The next day we arrived at the Ice Hotel. The lodging grounds were full of trees bent in half from the heavy snow and gorgeous ice sculptures in shapes of bears, hearts and chandeliers. We toured through the ice church and followed it with a drink from the ice bar. By night fall, I was ready for my 800 dollar a night bed. We were led to our room which was essentially a walk-in freezer behind a curtain. In the middle of the room was a block of ice covered in dear skins and sleeping bags. I faked a smile and said “Can we upgrade to a real room?” My companion loved my reaction; “This is the upgrade” he jarred. As we lay down we tried to look at each other, but it was proving
difficult. I was completely covered except a small little breathing hole. He was more brave and had most of his eyes showing. We wiggled around like inch worms calling to each other. Then he said, “Do you have to go to the bathroom?” We laughed ourselves to sleep and prayed for daylight. Morning came and I was happy to be awakened with hot lingonberry juice. The sweet and sour mixture was our liquid courage to make a mad dash to the hotel restroom. Once inside the lodge we congratulated each other on surviving the night. As we drove from the hotel, I stared out the passenger window; the iridescent scenery looked like a fantasy. My thoughts were interrupted with the memo-
ry of the young man we nearly hit. I wished that on his journey we could have shared with him the happiness we felt while singing in the car. Happiness is a funny thing. It’s tangible and easily felt. Like a snowflake, one minute it’s on the tip of your nose, the next moment it can melt away. There’s only one way to create happiness and that is from within. The world is only filled with happiness if we make it, share it and send it to land on someone else’s nose. I looked out into the white wonderland and realized Sweden had taught me a lot: wear boots with traction, don’t stand under icicles and share the “happy.” But that’s just my view… from the window seat. www.thewindowseatview.com

//////// Business Buzz / Pest Control
~ A Business to Buzz about P est control may not be a glamorous business, but it’s a prevalent need here in the valley. It seems as if most homes in the valley were built on an anthill with lots of other neighboring creepy crawlers. This keeps Craig Bloom, owner and operator of Lakeside Pest Control, busy as a local exterminator. “I don’t let my family live with bugs and I make sure other families don’t have to either.” Craig started Lakeside Pest Control two years ago after working 28 years in the business. He had worked for a few major pest management companies and found that as each corporation grew the personal service diminished. “I was being asked to take 5 to 10 minutes on a house that should take at least 30 minutes,” Craig recalls. This, combined with some of the other quality control shortcuts he was asked to make, is what made Craig want to start up his own company. “I believe that each customer deserves the same service you would give to your own home.” To start his company, Craig earned the highest license attainable in the pest control industry. The grueling test lasted several hours, but he felt pride in knowing he was laying a solid foundation to build his business upon. Being bonded and insured gives him and his client’s peace of mind. Lakeside Pest Control is family owned and operated. Craig’s stepdaughter, Brittany Tribulski, manages the daily operations of the company. “Craig is a wonderful

Dad to me and my three sisters,” she says. “Even though he never had children of his own, he dedicated his life to all of us girls (and even our dog Candy) when he met our mom 12 years ago. When he decided to start a business, we were happy to support him in any way we could, just like he’s done for us.” His girls call him the “Expert Exterminator” due to his constant research on bugs. Craig is a man of few words, but don’t get him started on the difference between an Africanized bee and a Honey bee. While many larger companies just treat bugs, Craig’s knowledge and desire to offer more allow him to treat a larger array of pests including bees, wasps, hornets, rodents, cockroaches, beetles, ants, and birds. He is always working to expand the services he is able to offer his clients. Lakeside Pest Control serves residential and commercial properties in most parts of the Inland Empire. Their products effectively rid any environment of unwanted pests. Hand picking each product himself, Craig is very particular on using the most effective products. Lakeside is also proud to offer an all-natural “green” line. These rosemary-based products can safely be used around children and animals. “All of our products are safe and highly effective,” explains Brittany,
“but equally important is how each product is applied. We know which product will be best for our clients and fit their individual needs. We ask the right questions to develop a treatment plan that is specific to each problem and family’s lifestyle.” As an honest, hard-working pest control expert, Craig founded his company on his dedication to provide his community with quality service and exceptional customized treatment. His experience and education is why people ask for him by name, but his customer service is why they call him back again. Lakeside Pest Control is a family in itself and from their family to yours; they provide clean, healthy, pest-free living.

Millennials Wanted
H
omeownership has long been considered the American dream, but why are there so few homeowners in the rising generation of 25-34 year olds? The mainstream media puts a spin on the actual stats so it’s hard to find the truth. The truth is the millennial generation has been pushed out of the competition for home ownership. Buying a home has generally been dependent on household income for a down-payment. However, with the growing economy of the 1990's there were a few ways banks helped people buy homes irrespective of down payment. Well Toto, we’re not in the 90’s anymore. Since 1998 the average household income, in the United States, has steadily declined. The fact is there are many factors preventing the millennials from laying down the “welcome” mat to a new home. One such factor was the banker’s ability to lend copious amounts of money in the 90’s. They were extra lenient with their lending standards because their risks were very low. Also, the government hoped to increase home ownership by developing programs to make the terms easier for individuals with bad

credit. Cheap credit was the driving force of the 1990s and 2000s housing boom. In 2005, the "No Income No Job Assets" (NINJA) loan was demonstrative of the "wink-wink" relationship between debtors and creditors. This relationship literally siphoned money from the debtor’s bank accounts to the creditor’s banks. Also, the “house flipping” craze that the media hyped made home ownership seem easy. The concept was sold as a home business that is guaranteed to make money. When the market crashed many were left with properties they could neither afford nor sell. Because of this, banks have become more conservative and bankruptcy laws more stringent, which makes getting a loan even tougher for Millennials. Most college-educated Millennials are struggling to payoff student loans with entry-level wages. Unemployment (and underemployment) has this younger generation feeling uncertain about the future. The demand for housing is there, but it’s clear why homeownership in this age group is below 45%! The GOOD NEWS is the United
States housing market continues to recover; and it’s a buyer’s market. This means buyers have more negotiating power. There are many new programs targeting millennials to help them with making their first home purchase. In fact, some of these programs can help new homebuyers get into a home for as little as $1400! The best way to get on the road to home ownership is to speak with a realtor at Twin Cities Realty and set a goal. A mortgage professional will also be a valuable part of your team. When you work with these professionals, they will help you create a plan to follow for 2015 and realize your dream to own a home really is within reach. Let’s create your foundation together!

Long-term Care Costs & Payment Methods
//////// Ask the Expert / Senior Care

amilies exploring long-term eldercare are generally unaware of the costs involved. Costs can range between $2000 and $6000 per month depending on care level, choice of care community, living arrangements, and location. Families can become discouraged when they learn the costs involved in obtaining quality care for their loved ones. As experts in this field, we help families find ways to meet those costs to obtain the care needed.
MEDICARE AND MEDI-CAL Most people are surprised to discover that Medicare and Medi-Cal do not pay for the care and private pay costs are significantly higher than expected. Medicare is a government program providing senior health care insurance that also pays for rehab care after a hospitalization; however, it will not cover long-term care. Medicaid is another government program, overseen by each state individually. In California, it is referred to as “Medi-Cal.” Medi-Cal will pay for long-term nursing home care if one qualifies financially, but only pays for some assisted living care on an extremely limited basis. VETERAN’S BENEFITS The VA Aid & Attendance program is an earned benefit that can offset costs for veterans and their living or widowed spouses who need 30

care. If certain requirements are met, there may be benefits of up to $2400 per month available to help towards qualified care costs at any state licensed care setting. We have discovered that many of our clients qualify for this program, even though most felt sure they would not. Those who are already receiving a military pension may also qualify. Anyone who has ever served in the armed forces should explore this resource.
SOCIAL SECURITY For those whose sole income source is social security income of approximately $1000 or less, the options for care settings are very limited. Seniors in this situation who require care may need to move to a more affordable area and share a room with another person in care settings that accept this method of payment. LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE Long-term care insurance is a type of insurance that can be purchased to offset the costs of in-home
care or assisted living communities. This insurance must be purchased before care needs occur. Long-term care insurance allows those covered the ability to choose from a wider selection of care options because out-of-pocket costs are greatly reduced. PERSONAL CONTRIBUTIONS Whether it is a combination of monthly income, family contributions and/or savings, personal funds are the primary way most families pay for care. It’s important to have someone who knows all the options available when making decisions on this important subject. Exploring every source of benefits may help make eldercare more affordable when the time comes and it is needed. Do you have a question or concern about a senior in your life?
