Over the past several months, I have certainly come to appreciate the farmers who grow food for us. I was very excited to plant an entirely organic garden this year, and it has been a pain. We planted a fairly large garden in late March and watched bugs devour everything. We replaced about 75% of the plants and started again. Boy, those bugs are persistent, and getting rid of them without pesticide proved to be difficult. They ate everything down again, but we watered the little stumps that were left behind. And after literally months of this, we were rewarded with some new growth. Luckily my husband is more patient than I when it comes to the garden, so the rewards are finally coming… but not in abundance. We’ve gotten a handful of mostly unimpressive veggies and 3 strawberries (out of 15 plants). My new plan is to shop at the farmer’s market and leave the organic gardening to them. I will happily buy their berries and zucchini and give up sweating in the heat while pulling little monsters (tomato worms) off of my poor bare plants. On the bright side, work is going well. : ) I met some awesome people this month out and about in Murrieta. This month I’m happy to introduce you to another amazing youth in our city. Whitney Campbell is a local teen and a multi-national champion horseback rider. Read her story on page 10. Our neighbor this month is Darren Jones. Although he knows a lot of people through his career in the banking industry, there’s a lot to Darren that people don’t know. Read his story on page 20.

eet Whitney Campbell, an equestrian rider and junior at Murrieta Valley High School. This 16-year-old, multi-national champion has been following her dream to ride horses competitively since she was just six. Whitney was named the Reserve National Champion in Hunt Seat equitation with her first horse at the young age of nine and National Champion at age 10 in Showmanship. However, her awards don’t stop there. In 2012, the talented equestrian rider and her horse, Wyman Oaks Joey, were given the title “Reserve National Champion and National Champion” in the same year. With multiple national and regional championships to her name, Whitney is far from average. After moving to Murrieta from Newport Beach, Whitney began riding horses at Green Acres Ranch Inc. It was something Whitney’s mother enjoyed as a child and she noticed that her daughter had long been enthralled with horses. “They were an obsession of hers as a toddler,” says Whitney’s mother, Sarah Campbell. “I am amazed at her ability to get on any horse and connect with it.” easily coached, Whitney picked up equestrian riding quickly and knew that it was something she wanted to do competitively. Whitney currently rides Saddle Seat, but her versatility has allowed her to train in many different styles.

Although it is clear that Whitney has a natural gift for riding, her extensive list of awards reveal her extreme dedication and competitiveness. Whitney trains at least ten hours a week, at KRe Show Horses, Green Acres Ranch Inc., and at Wallen West farms, working with trainers. Her determination always has her pushing the limits. Though she is a fierce competitor, she is very supportive of her fellow riders by congratulating them on their successes. One of the most valuable things Whitney has learned through her experiences in equestrian riding is perseverance. Whitney says that her trainer, Katherine Rich-elzig, has taught her to “practice her best” in order to compete at her best. She has been able to take this lesson and use it in numerous aspects of her life in order to succeed.
Whitney’s determination and grit aren’t the only things that make her such a remarkable girl. This extraordinary rider is passionate about using her talent to help others. Never one to keep what she has learned to herself, Whitney loves sharing her experiences with other riders and especially children. Whitney’s athleticism doesn’t end at horseback riding. As a varsity volleyball player at Murrieta Valley, she is undoubtedly a natural athlete. In her spare time, Whitney enjoys going on road trips with her family, hanging out with her friends and studying fashion. With dreams of making the USA Saddle Seat World Cup Team, it is indisputable that Whitney’s passion and diligence will take her extremely far in life.

///////// Blazing Tales
The Training of People oo, school is starting again. I don’t know why it takes so long to train a human. I fear the kids in my family will never learn, if they haven’t by now. every year it’s the same old thing. Back to school for more training. This is kind of affecting their ability to play with me during daytime hours. When I was a little pup, I went to school. The teacher thought I was very smart. I know that must be true because I graduated after only 6 weeks! Like the youngest kid in my family, I was not eager to go to my first class, but mom insisted. Once I got to school I saw that I had several classmates that I did not know. There was a little dog that kept barking at me. If I sat down, he barked. If I looked at him, he barked. Hey buddy, I’m pretty sure that is called bullying. I stayed away from that little yapper for the rest of my class. Then there were these two Golden Retrievers. They were pretty cool, especially the girl, Morgan. I

saw her check me out a little when I was learning to “spin circles.” She was really quick at learning new stuff, so I tried really hard to learn quick, too. There was a Boxer, too. He was kind of hyper, and he did not listen to the teacher very well. But I did. That’s because I am a good boy. In class I learned to sit, stay, lie down, leave it, wait, drop it, and many other things. I also learned that the word “release” means I can stop doing a command and relax again. Well, as you can see, I’m a pretty smart dog. So, I think I’m qualified to give some advice to these socalled teachers that are teaching my family’s kids. Give treats. There is nothing like a tasty treat to reinforce your lesson. So try giving some edible rewards. School is where I got the best snacks of my life: crunchy salmon skin, chicken jerky, and little crunchy pieces of beef. Yum! Give praise. even though praise is a sad disappointment next to a
tasty bite of beef, it’s something at least. Some of the praise words I like to hear are “good boy,” “you’re so smart,” and “you are the coolest dog on the planet!” Give pats. A pat on the head is another way of saying good boy. So you could try patting the kid on the head if he gets something right. Since I finished my education, I seem to get more pats and less treats. Sad. Keep it short. It’s really tough learning brand new tricks like writing and math. Be sure to break up the class time with some things they’ve already learned but need practice at. This will help them to retain better and build their confidence. Perhaps these teaching tips can help teachers get through to human children. I hope then they will finally say “release” to my people. I want them to leave it, come here, and spin circles with me.

WaterWise Yard Design & Décor Keeping Southern California Beautiful
///////// WaterWise
nother year of drought and the mandatory cutbacks for Californian’s might have you thinking that brown is the new green, but a visit to WaterWise Yard Design and Décor will give you a new understanding of what is possible with just a fraction of the water. If the words “drought tolerant” conjure visions of a bleak yard of landscaping rock or perhaps a dirt canvas dotted with cactus, prepare to have your mind expanded. When artist Brent Norcutt (AKA Poncho) and contractor Taven Cohn joined forces, the alliance created a synergy that clients describe as magical. Both men are extremely talented and work well together. Taven brings 30 years of experience in landscape design and
installation. His love of plants and nature led him to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Ornamental Horiculture at Cal Poly Pomona University. This education has given him an edge on most landscapers, and he regularly exceeds customer expectations. Taven is a true professional, strongly guided by his faith as well as honesty, integrity, and reliability. “I’ve always believed that a job is not complete until our customer is totally satisfied in their investment,” Taven explains. “Our highest priorities are to help save water and to add value to our customers’ property.” WaterWise serves both residential and commercial customers. Starting in the nursery business at just 18 years old, Taven has designed and built over 1,500 yards! focusing in on drought tolerant landscapes has resulted in many
extremely happy customers across Southern California. Taven and Poncho love it when people see what is possible by debunking the belief that drought tolerant means a yard of rocks and cactus. Who knew that vibrant color was possible in a WaterWise yard? Plants topped with bright flowers, natural or colored rocks and wood chips, and if you love the look of a deep green lawn, check out the displays of artificial turf. A stroll through the grounds at WaterWise will probably cheer you if your mood has been dampened during your shorter showers. Visible from the 15 fWY, the retail store boasts two acres of Americanmade artificial turf, fountains, pottery, succulents and arrangements, pavers, decorative rock and boulders, and truly amazing yard art! Some highlights of the store are the succulent garden, displays made of 100-year-old windows, living walls made of stacking blocks, large displays of the best artificial turf made in the US, and (of course) Poncho’s phenomenal outdoor art. “Poncho and I have really invested a lot of time and money into building a spectacular show room

Joint Tenancy:
///////// Ask the Expert / Your Estate Plan
The Biggest Mistake of Your Life (and Death)
M
Contributed by the Ashcraft Firm
any of you hold your property in joint tenancy right now. If you were married when you purchased your house, your realtor probably turned to you and said something to the effect of, “I'm not allowed to give you legal advice, but most married couples hold their property in joint tenancy.” So, you did as they suggested. Or perhaps you’re a single individual that didn’t want to go through the time and expense of creating a trust or will, so you simply added your most responsible child on your title, as joint tenant. If either of those sounds like you, now is the time to rethink those decisions. While you are living, if your joint tenant goes through a financial hardship such as divorce, bankruptcy, or lawsuit, the court may consider the property available to satisfy any judgments. Holding your property in joint tenancy puts your property at risk. You may be wondering why so many people hold their property in joint tenancy, then? Your joint tenant automatically gets the property without going through probate. “Great,” you think, “I've heard that probate is awful.” You're right, probate is awful, but there is something worse still lurking: capital gains taxes.
Capital gains taxes are dependent upon your “tax basis.” The tax basis of your property is basically the price that you paid for your house, plus improvements. When you sell your house, the IRS uses this basis to calculate how much to tax you. So, if you purchased a house for $100,000, then it appreciated to $300,000 before you sold it, you would have to pay capital gains on $200,000. Capital gains rates are 15%- 23.8% (depending on your tax bracket). You would end up paying $30,000 to $47,600 in taxes in the above scenario. When you hold your property as joint tenants you give a “carry-over basis” to the joint tenant, meaning you give them the same tax basis that you have in the property while living. If you die and your relatives have to sell the property, they will have to pay those capital gains taxes. If you pass your property by will or trust, you will get a “step up in basis” to the date of death value of the house. In the above scenario, your property appreciated to $300,000 before you died.If you pass property by will or trust, your relatives will inherit the property at the basis of $300,000. If they sell the property the next day, they will pay zero capital gains taxes. If you pass your property by

CAPITAL GAINS TAX will, it will not avoid the court process known as probate. You will have to take the time and expense of going through that process, but it usually does not cost as much as the capital gains tax that occurs when you pass the property by joint tenancy. If, however, you title your property in the name of a trust, you not only avoid capital gains tax problems, but you also avoid probate and all the cost and headache associated with it. Your trust attorney can help you evaluate the problems and benefits with the different ways of holding title and help you create the best plan for your heirs.

Life
t was during tough economic times when Darren Jones brought his wife, Ramona, and their children to their new home in Murrieta, California about 15 years ago. He had been a mortgage broker in Anaheim and the downturn in the housing market made him look at other career options. The family stuck together through a difficult time and taking on a job with Wells fargo Bank in Murrieta gave them a new anchor. Darren was glad to work so much with the public as it afforded him the opportunity to connect with others in his new community. “I still enjoy getting to know a wide range of people and hear their stories,” Darren smiles. Darren and Ramona recently celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary. Their five children are all grown now and range from ages 18 to 30. The couple met while Darren was serving in the navy. “I wasn’t looking for marriage or anything like that,” he recalls, describing their first meeting. He saw a group of beautiful, young ladies sitting at a bar and needed a way to infiltrate their group. Then one of the ladies told her friends that she loved "this song." Darren jumped at the opportunity to ask her to dance and he and Ramona have been best friends ever since. Darren has always loved the quote by Napolean Hill, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” With this mindset, he has been a source of inspiration to others and it’s one of the things his family and friends most appreciate about him. The idea that people

can do whatever they set out to has given him so many amazing experiences in his own life. Another thing that others enjoy about Darren is his sense of humor.) Public speaking and making people laugh were qualities that he worked to develop on stage as a stand-up comedian and actor. He looks back to that time in his life with fondness and now that all of the kids are grown is starting to revisit it again as a hobby. Darren is also a writer and is pleased that all of his children have creative talents in the various arts. But, Darren can’t take all the credit for that… He says Ramona sings beautifully even though she won’t show off her talent in public. Both parents encouraged their kids to
reach for their dreams. These days much of Darren’s time outside of work is spent caring for his aging parents. He is happy to have a supportive community around him. “I love Murrieta Valley because even though there are over 100,000 people here, it still has a small town feel,” he smiles. “I seem to always run into somebody I know,” he says. If you happen to see Darren around town, you’ll notice he has an easy smile that reaches his eyes. It may have been trying circumstances that brought Darren and his family to Murrieta, but as they set down roots here, they have become a solid and valued part of this community.
NEED STRONGER BONES?
NOW OFFERING GERI-FIT CLASSES
Calcium and supplements are not enough! Many health professional continue to recommend 1000mg of calcium daily and walking three times per week. Unfortunately, all supplements are not created equally, and all exercises do not trigger the body’s natural response to build bone density. for the best bone health, research shows that a “bone enhancing” diet (including supplements) and significant amounts of compression on the bones provide the best results—far better than pharmaceuticals! Osteogenic loading is the most effective, safe and painless means to achieve the proper compression and build your bone density. As for supplements, with nine types of calcium supplements on the market, It’s important to know which ones will actually help. Most contain Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Citrate, Calcium Lactate or Calcium Phosphate these have low rates of absorption. Calcium citrate malate has a higher rate of absorbtion, but calcium supplements containing microcrystalline hydroxyapatite offer significantly higher rates of absorption. It makes sense since 50% of bone mineral density is made of hydroxyapatite. If you’d like to learn more about building stronger bones naturally, call me or stop by the office. The five Love Languages By Tracy Blanscet
ne of the books that has impacted my life the most is The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. If you want to better understand your spouse, partner, kids, parents, friends or yourself, this book can help you! It’s a quick and easy read and can lead to better communication with the people you care about. The premise of the book is that we each have a dominant or primary love language categorized below:
• Quality Time • Physical Touch • Gifts • Acts of Service • Words of Affirmation
22
| MyCommunityMagazines.com
The author gives examples of each, which may help you identify yours and your loved ones’. If you have trouble figuring yours out, Gary suggests thinking about what is most hurtful to you. The things that hurt most are in your own love language. So criticism might be most hurtful to someone whose love language is words of affirmation, while not getting a hug goodbye might be hurtful to someone whose language is physical touch. It sure explains a lot and will help you be a better giver and receiver of love. This has the potential to save a marriage, give you understanding for family members, and really change your entire outlook. Now that’s life-changing!

He loves working with homeowners to give a room or the entire home a new look. “Most people don’t really know all we can do with paint,” he shares. Since starting his own painting company, Nava’s Painting, two years ago, Javier has expanded to include kitchen and bathroom make-overs. “People can’t believe the transformation when we paint their cabinets,” says Javier. “We use techniques that allow us to create an entirely new look whether you prefer traditional, modern, country, or your own thing.”

They can paint practically anything and give it a new look! His biggest compliment from customers is that he provides high quality work. This is because they do extensive prep work to make sure the job will meet or exceed expectations. Javier does every estimate himself and uses premium products. Working in the Temecula Valley has been a blessing because it means he is able to spend more time with his wife and two children. Javier’s advice is to always use a licensed contractor. They’ve had to learn the laws pertaining to construction and pass a test.

Business Owners and Accounting Professionals
O
By Smith Marion & Co. CPAs
ften, business owners must wear several hats. Accounting is usually one of the tasks they must take on despite having no expertise in this area. This includes paying the bills, invoicing customers, tracking expenditures, balancing the bank accounts and more. As the business grows, outsourcing the bookkeeping should be one of the first duties you pass off to a professional. It’s highly recommended you hire an accounting professional, rather than having an untrained staff member attempt the duty. Here are seven of the most common mistakes an accounting professional can help you avoid. 1. Invoicing Incorrectly Incorrect invoicing can take up a lot of extra time as you try to reconcile your sales to cash in the bank. If not done on time, delayed invoicing can strain your cash flow. A professional bookkeeper will ensure that invoices are correct and sent out on time. They can also monitor “aging of accounts” to make sure that receivables are collected in a timely manner. 2. Intending Rather than Doing Mistakes in your accounting can potentially lead to losses and government penalties. Many businesses
intend to keep up on inputting accounting data into the financial software, but it frequently gets neglected as they focus on providing the products or services of their business. 3. Unnecessary Bank Fees One third of the banking industry’s income comes from overdraft fees. Don’t give the bank money that is yours due to improper financial data. A professional bookkeeper will make sure that you are consistently aware of how much money is in your bank account so that you don’t end up paying the bank money that could be better spent elsewhere. 4. Failure to Plan Ahead Whether you owe or get a refund, taxes should never be a surprise. Some business owners are caught off guard when they learn how much they owe in taxes. failure to plan ahead might catch you with empty pockets and scrambling to pay Uncle Sam. When you have a professional work on your accounts throughout the year, filing a tax return is simple. They can help you navigate the murky and often frustrating world of tax regulations. 5. Banks DO Make Mistakes One task handled with accounting services is bank reconciliations. By
having reconciliations done on a regular basis, you will know if the bank made an error or if you have checks that have never cleared the bank. Also, the bookkeeper will be able to compare the income you receive to the bank statement making sure you receive credit for all of your deposits. 6. Saving Time/Money Some business owners get so entangled in administrative work that they actually hinder themselves from making more sales. for instance, a painter is an expert at painting and can probably paint a house much quicker than an accounting professional (and with less mistakes). But, they might take two or three times as long working on their books as an accountant. That time would be more wisely spent in the area of their area of expertise – painting! Having an accountant do your bookkeeping is a great investment in your business. It frees up your time to concentrate on your area of expertise. The right accountant will be a valuable member of your team and can help push you toward success!

Social Security Decisions What, When, Who, How?
Ask the Expert / Your Money /////////
T
Contributed by the Duane Johnson Group
he biggest story in Social Security today concerns the large number of baby boomers set to retire over the next 20 years and the relatively smaller, younger generations feeding Social Security payroll taxes into the system. On average, seniors are living longer than any previous generation. While that’s good news, it also presents several new challenges. A longer life increases the likelihood that you’ll have increased medical and long-term-care expenses throughout much of your retirement. This is particularly true if you’ve been active all your life as many of today’s baby boomers have been. furthermore, the value of your nest egg could be more significantly impacted by increases in the cost of living over a longer term. Quite simply, you could outlive your savings. When you consider all these factors, it is important to make informed decisions about when to begin receiving Social Security benefits within the context of your overall retirement income strategy. Just like every other facet of retirement planning, there are strategies you can employ to optimize the benefits you are eligible to receive-particularly among married people. According to the 2013 Risk and Process of Retirement Survey by the Society of Actuaries, a third of retirees (33%) do not have a plan for how much money they will spend each year in retirement and
where that money will come from. To help you prepare for a possible reduction in Social Security benefits and/or an overall shortfall, in your retirement income, calculate the general amount of income you expect to need in retirement. Add up your monthly expenses and factor in a 3.32 percent long-term annual inflation rate (the average annual inflation rate from 19132013). If the retirement age increases in the future, you may be able to continue working and delay your own retirement. However, if you need to retire before the full retirement age, you’ll need to factor in the potential for reduced Social Security benefits during those years. You may receive a personalized estimate of your Social Security benefits by using the online Retirement estimator at ssa.gov/estimator. Once you’ve identified your level of benefits, subtract this amount from the total income you’ve calculated that you need. The balance will give you an idea of the amount that could need to come from other sources. Many people are hesitant to delay receiving benefits because they don’t want to lose money they’ve contributed to the system for the last 35 years. The monthly benefit paid out at age 62 is actuarially reduced to account for the eight more years that the recipient will be paid benefits as compared to someone who begins drawing payouts at age 70. furthermore, the person who waits to claim benefits at age 70 will receive 76% more dollars per month for the rest of his life than if he claimed benefits at age 62. What’s most important in making Social Security decisions for your situation is at what point you
can no longer live comfortably without those benefits due to job loss, healthcare expenses or other issues. The question isn’t how to beat the system, but rather how to optimize the amount of income you receive for the length of time that you need it. Other sources of retirement income, such as pension plans, 401(k) plans, IRA’s, Annuities, tax exempt and taxable securities should be carefully evaluated in light of various factors. for example, generating a reliable fixed income versus variable, at-risk-income. You may want to consider speaking with a financial advisor or insurance agent to help develop a retirement income strategy before you apply for social security benefits.

Celebrating Four Years “L♥ve to Clean Your Home”
W
hen Martha Mendoza started her cleaning business in the Temecula Valley four years ago, she was doing what was necessary during a tough economy. But she quickly realized that the service she was providing was really helping people. One of the things that gave her the confidence to start her housekeeping company, Love to Clean Your Home, was her experience working at the Marriott Hotel in San Diego. There she worked in many capacities from housekeeping to the kitchen and eventually the front desk and accounting. This was where she learned how to manage a business. With that experience, Martha took a big step and opened a Hispanic market and deli in San Diego, which she owned and operated for 10 years before moving here to the Temecula Valley. In 2011, Martha was excited to start another business. Although Love to Clean Your Home was a small business, she wanted cus-

tomers to feel secure using her cleaning service, so she made sure to get her company licensed, bonded, and insured. Business started off slowly as she began to market herself, but as she gained clients and earned their trust, she was pleased that many of them referred her to others. Martha’s attention to detail has won the loyalty of the families she serves. “People are pleased with the job we do. It feels good to know I’m helping families to be able to spend more time with each other,” she explains. “One of the things our clients really appreciate is that we aren’t on a timer. We stay until we finish.” eco-friendly cleaning products comprise the bulk of the products in Martha’s tool kit, but some of her clients like her to use particular products that they leave out for her. She’s happy to oblige. Another thing clients find with Martha is that she maintains good communication with them, checking in on their satisfaction from

time-to-time. This allows her to get to know the personal preferences of each household. Martha says her husband has been a steady source of encouragement to her as she has grown her business each year. “It feels great to know I’ve really done this myself,” she says. “It gives me a sense of independence and accomplishment.” Service to others has been an important part of Martha’s life, and she is pleased to continue serving others through her business. Through a nonprofit called Cleaning for a Reason, Martha and her team are able to clean two houses each month for women with cancer. “I want to take away the worry of housework and allow these ladies to focus on their health and treatment,” Martha comments. “It’s important to reach out and help those around us.” Martha is honored to celebrate four years of service in our community!
