Hooray, school’s back in! (Oops, did I type that out loud?) Well, guess who’s a grandma? Yep, that’s right it’s me. My oldest daughter and her husband welcomed their first child into the world on July 15th and it’s an awesome feeling being a grandma for the first time. I can already see why people love being a grandparent so much. I will have all of the benefits of loving her, being a part of her life, and having fun with her (someday), but I’ll have almost no responsibility! Her name is Scarlett, and even though she lives in Idaho, she is here visiting at the moment. I’m very excited to introduce you to the new business on this month’s cover. WaterWise is a very unique place and the owners, Poncho and Taven are pretty extraordinary. See what makes them stand out on page 6. I’m also pleased to feature Jack and Linda Williams on page 12. They are the owners of Richie’s Diner, but so many people around town know them by name. I’m positive it’s because they always take the time to chat with their guests and get to know them. If it’s been awhile since you’ve been in to say hello, grab your family or a friend and stop by this month to celebrate their 24th business anniversary with a 25-cent root beer float! Mmmm! I think you’re going to love this months “Neighbor.” I met her at the Temecula Valley Hospital where she volunteers. I can’t imagine a more fitting person to greet people who might be feeling worry, stress, or concern when they come into the hospital. Her warmth would help anyone feel better! Read her story on page 20. I hope you were able to make some great memories this summer. I got to visit Yellowstone with my family for the first time (after meeting my new little granddaughter in Idaho). It seemed like I was on another planet. This geothermal wonderland is home to about half of the world's active geysers. If you know an outstanding youth or “neighbor” that we should feature, I’m always thankful for your input. Thanks Temecula, Happy Reading! Your neighbor,

Feature ///////////// nother year of drought and the mandatory cutbacks for Californian’s might have you thinking that brown is the new green, but a visit to WaterWise Yard Design and Décor, will give you a new understanding of what is possible with just a fraction of the water. If the words “drought tolerant” conjure visions of a bleak yard of landscaping rock or perhaps a dirt canvas dotted with cactus, prepare to have your mind expanded. Meet the two men who will open your thinking to new and beautiful possibilities: Brent “Poncho” Norcutt and Taven Cohn. When the artist (Poncho) and contractor (Taven) joined forces, the alliance created a synergy that clients describe as magical. Both men are extremely talented and work well together. “We really compliment each others skill set,” smiles Taven, who has 30 years of experience in landscape design and installation. His landscapes have happy clients across Southern California raving. A love of plants and nature led him to study Ornamental Horiculture at Cal Poly Pomony University where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree. His education has given him an edge on most landscapers as he regularly exceeds customer expectations. Taven is a true professional who is strongly guided by his faith. Honesty, integrity, and reliability are the qualities that customers compliment him on. “I’ve always believed that a job is not complete until our customer is totally satisfied in their investment,” Taven explains. “Our highest priorities are to help save water and to add value to our customer’s property.”
WaterWise serves both residential and commercial customers. Starting in the nursery business at just 18 years old, Taven has designed and built over 1,500 yards! Looking at the parched lawns on your block might have you questioning if the sunshine and close proximity to the beach really do make living in Southern California “worth it.” Check out some of the “after” photos and your outlook is sure to brighten. After all, who knew that vibrant color was possible in a WaterWise yard? Drought tolerant plants topped with bright flowers, natural or colored rocks and wood chips, and if you love the look of a deep green lawn, check out the displays of artificial turf. A stroll through the grounds at WaterWise will probably cheer you if your mood has been dampened during your shorter showers. Visible from the 15 FWY, the retail store boasts two acres of American made artificial turf, fountains, pottery, succulents and arrangements, pavers, decorative rock and boulders, and truly amazing yard art!

//////////// Feature WaterWise stands in the space that was formerly known as “Fountain World” right beside Tuff Shed. “This location was the perfect fit for us,” says Poncho. “We’ve put in a lot of work constructing the store and I’m really pleased with what we’ve accomplished.” The men worked tirelessly for weeks to make their vision for the store a reality. Some highlights of the store are the succulent garden, displays made of 100 year old windows, living walls made of stacking blocks, large displays of the best artificial turf made in the US, and (of course) Poncho’s phenomenal outdoor art. Poncho is extremely passionate about yard art, fountains, pottery, creative succulent displays, and pretty much anything that looks cool. He’s been purchasing and collecting unique items from all over the place, which he uses to create one-of-a-kind pieces. He often uses antiques to create something new and unique, and it is all on display and available for purchase at
WaterWise. He even builds custom items upon request! “Poncho and I have really invested a lot of time and money into building a spectacular show room to give our customers ideas and to show actual life size displays of the products that we use,” Taven explains. “Seeing is believing.” There really is something for everyone at this amazing new store! Weather you’re looking for a new WaterWise landscape, want to add some creative accents to your yard, or just want to check out the store, it will be worth your time. Stop by this month to say hello to Poncho and Taven and welcome WaterWise Yard Design and Decor to the valley.

THE
CHARACTERISTICS
//////////// Rising Star

Drake
rothers Drake and Dylan Evans share a lot of similarities, but their dedication to racing motorcycles is what makes their champion characteristics shine. Both teens participate in off-road racing competing in Motocross or Supercross events nearly every weekend. This physically demanding sport has helped them to develop into leaders on and off the track! The Evans family moved to the area from Nevada because the motocross industry in the Temecula Valley is so strong. Parents Nate and Tami are committed to helping their boys achieve their dream to ride professionally. Though Tami is very proud of her sons’ achievements, she most appreciates that they are gentlemen, something others compliment as well. Winning does not make someone a champion. To be in this category, one displays several traits demonstrating commitment and courage. It’s an attitude! Drake and Dylan definitely fall into the category of champions. Drive Champions are always driven to be better. They push the limits to continually reach new levels. Their extreme focus on reaching a goal keeps them committed. The boys started riding between the ages of four and five. Drake is now 18 and Dylan 16, and both have a goal to race professionally in the near future. “My goal is to keep winning races and go pro by the end of 2016,” Dylan shares. Drake sums it up saying “I’ve learned to never quit. I will continue to strive for success and constantly push myself.” 10

Courage Besides the courage it takes to keep going when things are not going their way, Drake explains that motorsports are dangerous. “Lots of kids have gotten hurt,” he shares. “It is so tough to take time to recover from an injury and try to get back to where you were while everyone else is still healthy and training.” The boys have lost a couple of friends to motocross crashes and it can be a challenge to stay strong. Self Discipline This is such an essential trait. The boys train at the gym three days a week, in addition to running, biking, swimming and other activities they do outside of the gym. They are homeschooled so they can maximize their training schedules and have moved a few times to be where they can get the best training and experience. Toughness Motocross racing requires physical and mental toughness. Drake talks about mental strength saying, “I’m not the biggest or the fastest, but always seem to stay positive and keep looking forward.” His discipline and determination are traits that are recognized by those around him. Dylan adds that bike problems can be challenging too, so staying positive (even when things are not looking very bright) is necessary. Drake and Dylan are grateful for their parents supporting helping them to grow, compete and achieve their goals. The lessons they are learning through this exciting sport are ones that will benefit them in all they do in life. Drake’s message to others is, “Whether it’s for Motocross or everyday life, never quit!”

Management Excellence
Equals a Recipe for Success!

Williams, founders Richie’s Real American Diner! As this strong, successful company celebrates 24 years in business, it’s apparent their management philosophy has been a key to their longevity.

Jack had already had decades of experience in the food industry working with “the real” Colonel Sanders and helping to pioneer the Sizzler concept when he and his wife, Linda, came up with plans for an American–themed diner for the Temecula Valley.
MyTemecula-issue10_Layout 1 8/11/15 10:11 PM Page 13
Business Buzz ///////////// They were privileged to meet and learn from many wonderful people in the industry with one of their favorites being Rich Snyder, who became the President and CEO of In-N-Out at the young age of 24! They admired how his strong Christian values were directly reflected in his leadership of his company. The Williams’ decided to name their restaurant after their dear friend Rich, calling it Richie’s Real American Diner. The first Richie’s Diner opened in 1991 in Temecula followed by another location in Murrieta in 2007. Like the restaurant’s namesake, Jack and Linda have always been guided by their faith which is reflected in the way they treat others, whether they are guests, vendors, or team members. “The people who work for us are our greatest asset,” Jack says proudly. “Linda and I have always believed we should ‘hire to retire,’ and I’m so pleased at how many team members have been with us for such a long time.” They believe that management skills can be taught, but you can’t “train” someone to have a great personality or a good heart. These qualities, along with a big smile, are just what Jack and Linda love to compliment and reward. One manager, Jorge Chavez, has been working for the Williams’ for the entire 24 years of Richie’s existence! He began working with Jack and Linda as a manager at one of the Sizzler restaurants, which they owned before starting Richie’s Diner, and Jack says he was a “magical” choice for management at Richie’s. “I really love working for Jack and Linda,” says Jorge. “They are such hard workers and set a great
example for the entire team. I always feel they appreciate and value my service.” Jack and Linda are definitely known as hard workers! Their team members see it on a daily basis, but if you’ve eaten at the Richie’s Diner, you know that this couple is still working hands-on in these restaurants even into their eighties! Guests love that Jack or Linda take the time to stop by the table to say hello. Linda’s baking has long been a hit with guests, and she is very particular that it is served just right! In fact, they have a saying, “If it ain’t a ‘10,’ make it again!” Her own recipes delight customers and include pies and cobblers made from fresh seasonal fruit in addition to classics like German chocolate cake, banana splits, and rootbeer floats. Jorge elaborates, explaining, “Linda really makes Richie’s feel like home. She adds special touches to the restaurant by putting up different decorations with each season. This is something our regular guests really love to see.” From its inception, Richie’s Diner has always had a patriotic theme. August marks Richie’s 24th anniversary, and this is Linda’s favorite time to decorate. “The Diners will be decked out in red, white and blue as we ‘Celebrate America,’” says Linda. Another manager, Kiril Todorov, or “KT” as he’s known, looks around at the red, white and blue and comments, “I came to America to pursue the American dream… I can’t imagine what could be more American than working here.” Richie’s Diner is so much more than a restaurant. Linda and Jack ★★★★★

are grateful to provide a great work environment where team members will learn skills that will benefit them throughout life. “We really feel like our team members are family,” explains Jack. “We love to be a part of their lives and grow with them through the years.” Manager, Manuel Garcia, (Manny) has had a long history working in the Williams’ restaurants. After several years of working in the Williams’ Sizzler restaurants, Jack and Linda invited Manny to join their Diner team when the need for a manager arose. His management skills and great smile have been a plus for Richie’s customers. From its Christian faith-based corporate purpose to its strong sense of social and community responsibility, Richie’s culture is centered on “old-fashioned manners and courtesy.” Jack and Linda Williams have become leaders in the restaurant industry through their active leadership, work ethic and values. They lead by example when it comes to treating others with kindness and respect. In 2014, the couple was honored with the highest recognition in the food industry when Richie’s Real American Diner was named the “BEST SMALL RESTAURANT CHAIN IN AMERICA,” by the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association. What an amazing accomplishment by one of our own neighbors! The award is a source of tremendous pride to Jack and Linda, but they give credit to an all-star management team. The company mission statement “Pleasin’ People” may be short, but those two little words hold the key to the success of Richie’s Real American Diner!

//////////// Blazing Tales
The Training of People oo, school is starting again. I don’t know why it takes so long to train a human. I fear the kids in my family will never learn, if they haven’t by now. Every year it’s the same old thing. Back to school for more training. This is kind of affecting their ability to play with me during daytime hours. When I was a little pup, I went to school. The teacher thought I was very smart. I know that must be true, because I graduated after only 6 weeks! Like the youngest kid in my family, I was not eager to go to my first class, but mom insisted. Once I got to school I saw that I had several classmates that I did not know. There was a little dog that kept barking at me. If I sat down, he barked. If I looked at him, he barked. Hey buddy, I’m pretty sure that is called bullying. I stayed away from that little yapper for the rest of my class. Then there were these two golden retrievers. They were pretty cool especially the girl, Morgan. I saw

her check me out a little when I was learning to “spin circles.” She was really quick at learning new stuff, so I tried really hard to learn quick too. There was a Boxer too. He was kind of hyper and he did not listen to the teacher very well. But I did. That’s because I am a good boy. In class I learned to sit, stay, lie down, leave it, wait, drop it, and many other things. I also learned that the word “release” means I can stop doing a command and relax again. Well, as you can see, I’m a pretty smart dog. So, I think I’m qualified to give some advice to these so-called teachers that are teaching my family’s kids. Give treats. There is nothing like a tasty treat to reinforce your lesson. So try giving some edible rewards. School is where I got the best snacks of my life: crunchy salmon skin, chicken jerky, and little crunchy pieces of beef. Yum! Give praise. Even though praise is a sad disappointment next to a
tasty bite of beef, it’s something at least. Some of the praise words I like to hear are “good boy,” “you’re so smart,” and “you are the coolest dog on the planet!” Give pats. A pat on the head is another way of saying good boy. So you could try patting the kid on the head if he gets something right. Since I finished my education, I seem to get more pats and less treats. Sad. Keep it short. It’s really tough learning brand new tricks, like writing and math. Be sure to break up the class time with some things they’ve already learned but need practice at. This will help them to retain better and build their confidence. Perhaps these teaching tips can help teachers get through to human children. I hope then they will finally say “release” to my people. I want them to leave it, come here, and spin circles with me.

administrators who have no medical training make the decisions on what is covered. Most doctors feel their hands are tied in treating their patients because their income comes primarily from insurance, so they are limited to providing only tests, screenings, and procedures that are allowed by the insurance. People seem to have developed a mindset that is not in the best interest of their health, focusing only on whether a test or procedure is covered by insurance rather than what the most favorable outcome is. The Optimal Wellness Network was formed to help people who want to take control of their health. The providers seek to deliver education and resources to help the public consider what is in the best interest of their health, rather than focusing only on options allowed by insurance. Breaking away from that mode of thinking opens up a whole new world of wellness; a world that can ultimately save an individual time, money and heartache in the long run. The value of giving yourself appropriate care along the way and focusing on prevention is priceless. Ask someone who has just found out they have cancer or another debilitating disease. This is accomplished by spending time with each patient and personalizing the care that is given.

Advanced Health Care Directive
W
By Attorney, Rachel King
atching the tug-ofwar over Bobby Kristina Brown's life was heartbreaking! The poor girl was in a coma since January while her father and grandmother were pulling at opposite ends of her life rope. The tug-of-war ended when she was taken off life support and passed away last month. Because she did not have an Advanced Healthcare Directive, she was not able to ensure her own wishes were carried out. It's not just the famous. Not long ago, I received a call from a man whose wife was hit by a car. Two resuscitations later, she was lying in a hospital bed, brain dead. She was in her mid-thirties and was three months postpartum with their 3rd child. Tragic: YES! He asked me if he could take her off of life support. He told me they hadn’t gotten around to making their will or an Advanced Health Care Directive. The vast majority of us are not prepared for misfortune. We have the best intentions, but it always seems that planning can wait. The thing is, no one is ever prepared for the unexpected, and once it’s too late, it’s too late. Period. Prior to becoming an attorney, I couldn't have told you the difference between a Living Will and an
Advanced Health Care Directive. But, in my current role, I have repeatedly seen the difficulties that ensue when tragedy strikes and people are unprepared. If I could save even one family from going through some of the turmoil I've seen, this article will have fulfilled its purpose. So let’s keep it simple: There are 4 documents that can ensure you'll receive the kind of health care that you desire, should you ever become incapacitated: the Durable Power of Attorney, the Advanced Health Care Directive, the Living Will, and the Do Not Resuscitate form. Fortunately, California has simplified this by having the Advanced Health Care Directive include the Durable Power of Attorney and Living Will. In California, an Advanced Health Care Directive allows you to give instructions regarding your own health care AND name someone else to make health care decisions for you. You can also use this form to designate whether you will donate organs and specific limitations on organ donation. For example, I know a veteran who is very serious about being an organ donor. However, she only wants to donate her organs to save a life. Her Advanced Health Care Directive limits how her organs can be used; Yours can too. A Power of Attorney for health care is also part of the Advanced Health Care Directive. This lets you name another person to make decisions regarding your health care if

you are incapable of making them. Interestingly, you can also name a person to make health care decisions now, even if you are still capable, and you can limit the decision making power of this person. Some of the decisions you may designate include: 1) consent or refuse any treatment or procedure, 2) selection of discharge health care providers, 3) approval of tests, surgery, and medications, 4) life support, and 5) autopsy requests and how to handle your remains. Your Advanced Health Care Directive also lets you give specific instructions about any aspect of your health care, even when you have named a Power of Attorney for health care. This can include specific directions regarding life support, pain management, and most commonly, resuscitation restrictions. The “Do Not Resuscitate Orders” AKA, “DNR,” are included as part of the Advanced Health Care Directive. California has specific requirements for creating a legal Advanced Health Care Directive, so talk to your attorney to understand these requirements. The Advanced Health Care Directive can be revoked or updated at any time. Avoid a tug-of-war that can tear a family apart by making decisions for yourself before there is a stressful situation. Don't wait until it's too late! MyTemeculaMag.com |

ive years ago when Tricia Pedersen lay in a hospital bed in a coma, there were many people praying for her. The prayers continued for the retired school teacher, as she recovered and Tricia learned a valuable lesson; spiritual care is equally important to physical and mental care. Although Tricia had always believed in giving back through volunteer work, her brush with death gave her a new focus in her volunteering. She wanted to “pay it forward” by providing others with spiritual care and began serving at her church as a Eucharistic Minister (a lay minister). She volunteered to minister to the sick and homebound for her church, St. Catherine’s. As time passed, Tricia added more service to her schedule making blankets, which she carries in

the trunk of her car to distribute to the homeless. She also began working for the Temecula Valley Hospital in 2014 as a volunteer chaplain. “I love the people I come in contact with,” Tricia says, sincerely. Oftentimes in the worst moments of someone's life, she is able to witness people’s courage and kindness. “I’m encouraged by their faith and impressed by their bravery,” she expounds. “I feel as though I receive more than I give.” Fueled by her faith, Tricia’s compassionate nature is something that others notice quickly. Tricia credits her father as one of the great examples of generosity and caring in her life. “He believed in leaving the world a better place than he found
it and I have always aspired to be like him,” she smiles, warmly. At Christmastime, Tricia along with her husband, Mark, and their three adult children host a Christmas dinner for the widowed in the community. They entertain 50-75 guests each year and the entire Pedersen family feels this is the highlight of their own Christmas. Tricia has found a fitting outlet for sharing love and support with those in need of compassion and tenderness at a most difficult time. She truly is a blessing to the Temecula Valley Hospital and to our community.

Celebrating Four Years “L♥ve to Clean Your Home”
W
hen Martha Mendoza started her cleaning business in the Temecula Valley four years ago, she was doing what was necessary during a tough economy. But she quickly realized that the service she was providing was really helping people. One of the things that gave her the confidence to start her housekeeping company, Love to Clean Your Home, was her experience working at the Marriott Hotel in San Diego. There she worked in many capacities from housekeeping to the kithcen and eventually the front desk and accounting. This was where she learned how to manage a business. With that experience, Martha took a big step and opened a Hispanic market and deli in San Diego which she owned and operated for 10 years before moving here to the Temecula Valley. In 2011, Martha was excited to start another business. Although Love to Clean Your Home was a small business, she wanted cus-

tomers to feel secure using her cleaning service, so she made sure to get her company licensed, bonded, and insured. Business started off slowly as she began to market herself, but as she gained clients and earned their trust, she was pleased that many of them referred her to others. Martha’s attention to detail has won the loyalty of the families she serves. “People are pleased with the job we do. It feels good to know I’m helping families to be able to spend more time with each other,” she explains. “One of the things our clients really appreciate is that we aren’t on a timer. We stay until we finish.” Eco-friendly cleaning products comprise the bulk of the products in Martha’s tool kit, but some of her clients like her to use particular products that they leave out for her. She’s happy to oblige. Another thing clients find with Martha, is that she maintains good communication with them, checking in on their satisfaction from

time-to-time. This allows her to get to know the personal preferences of each household. Martha says her husband has been a steady source of encouragement to her as she has grown her business each year. “It feels great to know I’ve really done this myself,” she says. “It gives me a sense of independence and accomplishment.” Service to others has been an important part of Martha’s life and she is pleased to continue serving others through her business. Through a nonprofit called Cleaning for a Reason, Martha and her team are able to clean two houses each month for women with cancer. “I want to take away the worry of housework and allow these ladies to focus on their health and treatment,” Martha comments. “It’s important to reach out and help those around us.” Martha is honored to celebrate four years of service in our community! Business Owners and Accounting Professionals
O
By Smith Marion & Co. CPAs
ften, business owners must wear several hats. Accounting is usually one of the tasks they must take on despite having no expertise in this area. This includes paying the bills, invoicing customers, tracking expenditures, balancing the bank accounts and more. As the business grows, outsourcing the bookkeeping should be one of the first duties you pass off to a professional. It’s highly recommended you hire an accounting professional rather than having an untrained staff member attempt the duty. Here are seven of the most common mistakes an accounting professional can help you avoid. 1. Invoicing Incorrectly Incorrect invoicing can take up a lot of extra time as you try to reconcile your sales to cash in the bank. If not done on time, delayed invoicing can strain your cash flow. A professional bookkeeper will ensure that invoices are correct and sent out on time. They can also monitor “aging of accounts” to make sure that receivables are collected in a timely manner. 2. Intending Rather than Doing Mistakes in your accounting can potentially lead to losses and gov-
ernment penalties. Many businesses intend to keep up on inputting accounting data into the financial software, but it frequently gets neglected as they focus on providing the products or services of their business. 3. Unnecessary Bank Fees One third of the banking industry’s income comes from overdraft fees. Don’t give the bank money that is yours due to improper financial data. A professional bookkeeper will make sure that you are consistently aware of how much money is in your bank account so that you don’t end up paying the bank money that could be better spent elsewhere. 4. Failure to Plan Ahead Whether you owe or get a refund, taxes should never be a surprise. Some business owners are caught off guard when they learn how much they owe in taxes. Failure to plan ahead might catch you with empty pockets and scrambling to pay Uncle Sam. When you have a professional work on your accounts throughout the year, filing a tax return is simple. They can help you navigate the murky and often frustrating world of tax regulations.
5. Banks DO Make Mistakes One task handled with accounting services is bank reconciliations. By having reconciliations done on a regular basis you will know if the bank made an error, or if you have checks that have never cleared the bank. Also, the bookkeeper will be able to compare the income you receive to the bank statement making sure you receive credit for all of your deposits. 6. Saving Time/Money Some business owners get so entangled in administrative work, they actual hinder themselves from making more sales. For instance, a painter is an expert at painting and can probably paint a house much quicker than an accounting professional (and with less mistakes). But, they might take two or three times as long working on their books as an accountant. That time would be more wisely spent in the area of their area of expertise – painting! Having an accountant do your bookkeeping is a great investment in your business. It frees up your time to concentrate on your area of expertise. The right accountant will be a valuable member of your team and can help push you toward success!

avier Nava has been a painter for eight years and he’s seen first hand what a fresh coat of paint can do. He loves working with homeowners to give a room or the entire home a new look. “Most people don’t really know all we can do with paint,” he shares. Since starting his own painting company, Nava’s Painting , two years ago Javier has expanded to include kitchen and bathroom make-overs. “People can’t believe the transformation when we paint their cabinets,” says Javier. “We use techniques that allow us to create an entirely new look whether you prefer traditional, modern, country, or your own thing.”

This is because they do extensive prep work to make sure the job will meet or exceed expectations. Javier does every estimate himself and uses premium products. Working in the Temecula Valley has been a blessing because it means he is able to spend more time with his wife and two children. Javier’s advice is to always use a licensed contractor. They’ve had to learn the laws pertaining to construction and pass a test.

One of the greatest baseball pitchers in history… That Never Was.
It was a warm afternoon in Chattanooga, Tennessee on April 2, 1931. Four thousand eager fans passed through the turnstiles and rushed to their seats at the local ballpark to watch the famous New York Yankees take on their home team, the Chattanooga Lookouts, a AA minor league baseball team in an exhibition game. Early on, the Lookouts were in trouble. Their pitcher, Clyde Barfoot gave up a double and a single giving the Yankees a one run lead. Then, Babe Ruth the Yankee powerhouse, came to the plate. The manager of the Lookouts stopped the game immediately and signaled for a new pitcher. A small and frail figure ran out to the pitcher’s mound. It was a rookie, who had just signed with the Lookouts only days before and was eager to play. When Ruth made eye contact with the rookie, he couldn’t believe his eyes… it was a woman, her name Jackie Mitchell. She was only 17 years old. Mitchell’s first pitch to the great Bambino was a curve ball that Ruth swung through and missed. Strike one. Mitchell’s second pitch was a breaking ball that witnesses said “dropped like a rock” as Ruth took another hack and missed. Strike two. At this point, according to writers on hand, Ruth demanded that the home plate umpire inspect the ball. Nothing unusual was found as Mitchell was preparing for her next pitch. The third pitch came as a fastball straight down the middle leaving Ruth standing without a swing. Strike three, your out. The New York Times claimed that Ruth “…flung his bat away in high disdain and trudged to the bench, registering disgust with his
26
shoulders and chin.” The Yankees weren’t finished. Legendary Lou Gehrig was next at bat. Yet, Mitchell made uncharacteristically easy work of Gehrig, too, sitting the first basemen down in only three pitches. She walked off the mound to a hail of cheers. She was replaced by another pitcher in the next inning and watched from the bench as the Bronx Bombers pounded her new teammates en route to a 14-4 victory. Having witnessed her improbable display, nobody in Chattanooga cared a wink about the final result. A few days later, baseball commissioner Kenesaw Landis voided Mitchell’s contract and declared women unfit to play baseball as the game was "too strenuous” for such a delicate gender. Mitchell managed to find another team to play for but eventually retired at the age of 23, furious over gender inequality and how the media treated her brilliant athletic displays as some side-show. Mitchell never played baseball again. She refused to come out of retirement when the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League formed in 1943. Why Mitchell’s short and strange career isn’t more celebrated and scrutinized by baseball historians is a mystery. However, what most historians do agree on is that if Mitchell stayed in professional baseball and developed her talents, the league would have been much different today.

Reaching Out to Nepal from the Inland Valley
In November, a work group of volunteers led by Habitat for Humanity Inland Valley will be participating in the Carter Work Project 2015 in Pokhara, Nepal to build 100 strong, permanent homes. The group will work in partnership with families currently living in makeshift shelters following the catastrophic earthquakes that rocked the region earlier this year. While beautiful, Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries with around 40 percent of the population living below the poverty line. Habitat for Humanity has worked in Nepal for more than 20 years and is moving quickly to help repair the lives of those affected by the earthquakes. The group will attend the project headed by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter along with thousands of additional volunteers from around the world. To help offset cost, the local group of volunteers is accepting donations to help with travel expenses at habitativ.org/donatetocwp. For more information or to get involved in the project, visit www.habitativ.org/carterworkproject or call 951-296-3362.
