Happy Spring, Temecula! In honor of spring and new life we have a

special feature in this issue. We’ve put together a showcase of local crafters and handmade products in our special Handmade section. This month we found local artisans who are in the baby niche. Next time we’ll be featuring local artisans and crafters in another niche. This months crafters are made up primarily of young moms (Momprenuers). I’m so impressed by their ability to raise little ones while creating adorable hand made products to sell. Many sell their items locally by using social media sites or having their items displayed in a larger retail store. Or they may market to a wider audience by using sites such as Etsy where they can reach people in search of high-quality, custom, and unique items. When you see their products you’re sure to ooh and ahh! (Page 12-13) You’re gonna love meeting Ali Raye, a Temecula youth featured in our Rising Star article. She is bright and cheery and an amazing violinist. (Page 10) This month’s featured neighbor is a teacher totally dedicated to giving his best. Read about Mr. Justin Schultz on page 24. Also, be sure to check out I Do, Redo on page 20. We all have something we wish we could do again, but a group of local wedding vendors held a contest for people who wished they could get a “do over” on their wedding. Winners, Jodi and Dave Matthews, were so excited with their wedding makeover. Be sure to check it out on page 20. This spring, I’m looking forward to planting a garden! I visited a master gardener’s exhibit and was wowed by their lush vegetables growing from bales of straw. I learned the basic principles of straw bale gardening. I’m not a master gardener… I’m more of a beginner, so I’ll let you know how it goes. We got some backyard chickens a few months ago and they have just started laying eggs! Checking for eggs each day is so great that I sometimes forget to let the kids have a turn finding them. Each person in our family named one chick and even our dog, Blaze, has a pet hen. Read his take on the chicken story on page 23. Take some time to enjoy these warm days with your family! Plant some flowers together or play tag at the park. And don’t forget to spread sunshine every day! Your Neighbor,

Imagine the supper clubs of the ‘50s and ‘60s… People didn’t

go in just for dinner: these social clubs were considered a

“destination.” Guests would come in for cocktail hour, enjoy

an elegant dinner served with artistic flair, and finish up with cabaret-style entertainment.

| MyTemeculaMag.com

Supper clubs became popular after the prohibition, when the first liquor licenses were granted to establishments outside of city limits where food was served. As they evolved, they typically presented a high-class image donning linen tablecloths, serving fine cocktails and presenting an ever-changing lineup of entertainment. This was just the kind of stage where you could catch a performance by Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., or Dean Martin. While there are few of these original supper clubs still in operation across the US, a new generation of these clubs has been noticed popping up from New York to L.A. Plans are in progress to open one supper club right here, in Temecula. The Cuvee Club (pronounced Coo-Vay) revives the cabaret aura and supper club sophistication, with a unique mix of classic and contemporary American cuisine. Managing Partner, Collin Rand explains, “A dining experience should not just be about top quality food. It should be about the memorable experiences.” Collin has paid careful attention to creating the right atmosphere for the club. His strength in training high-end wait staff will mean excellence in service, while guests find enjoyment in so much more than a fantastic meal. Having also worked in the entertainment industry, Collin developed his ideal of an exceptional experience during his time working for Disney Entertainment Productions at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. Here he also learned the magic behind quality service! The concept of the Cuvee Club combines Collin’s love and passion for entertainment with his knowledge and experience in restaurant hospitality to create an amazing

experience, right here, in the Temecula Valley. With experience in just about every role in the restaurant business Collin knows what goes into creating excellence in service. His strengths in the food and hospitality business have primarily revolved around the roles of educating, training, and consulting. On a corporate level, Collin has provided consulting to several notable restaurant chains and hospitality groups including Chili’s, Maggiano’s, Marco’s Pizza, Denihan Hospitality, and Hilton Hotels. He is most passionate about providing exceptional service. “In my opinion, too many restaurants don’t put in the time it takes to train their staff appropriately,” begins Collin. “W hen your intentions are to serve high-priced bottles of wine and specifically crafted fare, the training must ensure that the service will be consistently excellent. My intention is to set the new standard on service for the valley.” Besides Collin, there are two others who helped to develop the Cuvée Club concept. Tyson Cronmiller will act as the Director of Operations. His “easy formal” upbringing has made him an excellent asset in fine dining establishments over the years of his career. His management experience in upscale eateries has allowed him to see that success is in properly training staff and in holding every member of the team accountable. Chef de Cuisine, Jason Rios began his cooking career at the age of 17. Years of hands on experience coupled with his culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu has allowed Jason to refine his talent for creating fresh, delicious cuisine served with an artistic flair. The Cuvée Club will offer a unique twist on the original supper club concept. Although the establishment will be open to the public,

it is a member-owned club. Much like joining a country club, an individual or business can purchase a membership. However, rather than having access for only one year, Founding Members receive some incredible lifetime benefits! • Monthly Complimentary Dinner for 4 • Monthly Complimentary Brunch for 4 • Complimentary Bottle of Red and White from our Monthly Featured Wine List • Complimentary Birthday and Anniversary Dinners for Member and Spouse/Significant Other • 2 VIP Seats to all Special Events and Engagements • Monthly Complimentary tickets to “Flight School” for 2 • Complimentary Private Dining Room access (when available) with no required minimum • No Corking Fees for personal bottles • Club Charge Account • 15% off Cuvée Club Card Although a Founding Membership is great for an individual, it’s even better for a business owner! The Cuvee Club will offer the atmosphere, setting, and location for executives to entertain clients, host a meeting, celebrate accomplishments or reward a member of their staff with a high-end amenity. Plus, based on how you purchase a Founding Membership, it may be applied as a tax write-off for your business! (Check with your tax professional.)

Many Temecula residents have enjoyed the popular House of Blues Sunday Gospel Brunch in San Diego. Collin has partnered with investor, Virgil Gibson, former lead singer of the Platters, to develop the Sunday Gospel Brunch with a unique blend of jazz, blues, and gospel. “With Virgil at the helm we will take the champagne Sunday MyTemeculaMag.com |

//////// Feature brunch to an entirely new and exciting level of inspiration,” says Collin. Virgil will help to bring well-known artists and gospel groups to Temecula from across the United States. As Virgil explains, “I cut my teeth on gospel. Nothing beats gospel for nourishing the soul, and we have a lot of soul to serve up at the Cuvée Club!” With a limited number of Founding Memberships still available, those who capture the vision during this phase of planning are sure to look back with joy at the opportunity they didn’t let pass by. For those who have been longtime golf club members, the value of this unique social club is unmistakable! Having no food and beverage minimums, no corking fees for personal bottles, and VIP tickets to

every special event is almost too good to be true. The Founding Membership investment of $5,000 is handled through a local escrow company. Many prominent residents and business owners from a variety of industries have already secured their memberships. “We have happily welcomed some of Temecula’s most well-respected citizens,” Collin shares. “To name a few: Linda Wunderlich, owner of the Valley Business Journal; Marcello Doffo, of the Doffo Winery; and Scott and Diane Strand, who own JDS Productions.” The Cuvée Club is sure to impress, from the moment you arrive for a business lunch with an important client or a special dinner celebration with family. Valet park-

ing adds to sophisticated character of the Cuvée Club. And on weekends, whether it is the Saturday Jazz Brunch or the Sunday Gospel Brunch, you will feel welcome and at home. The perfect blend of fine dining, quality entertainment, and an inviting atmosphere, this chic supper club is sure to be amongst the top destinations in the valley!

We chatted with a few of the Founding Members who are anticipating the opening of the Cuvée Club to find out why they joined. Here are some of their responses: BILL WILSON, Owner & CEO Wilson Creek Winery & Vineyards “It’s different, it’s unique, and this is something that was very popular in the past and I really think it could be time to bring them back. I believe this will be a great place where you can go out with your spouse and have a classy date night. In contrast to the clubs that are more geared toward singles looking to meet, this is a tasteful place where people can enjoy themselves without all of the wild stuff that you might see in a typical club.”

BRIAN & LYNELL NASH Nash Retirement Planning & Wealth Strategies “We actually purchased two memberships: one for our company and one for us personally. One of the main reasons we joined is because the clientele that we work with will appreciate many of the aspects of the Cuvée Club, including the ambiance, fine dining and quality of the entertainment. It’s a great investment! We’re basically prepaying for our food for a year and a half. We also look forward to going to the Cuvée Club to spend a nice evening out as well as to celebrate special events with our children and grandchildren.”

VIRGIL GIBSON Former Lead Singer of The Platters “I am very excited that a fine dining supper club with world class entertainment is being established in our community of Temecula. I am an investor because this is exactly the caliber venue I would like to frequent. I have also been asked to perform at the Cuvée Club on a regular basis and look forward to connecting the Cuvée Club with great entertainment from all over the United States. We are all looking forward to the Grand Opening.”

I also think this will be a great setting for holding our monthly meetings. I appreciate the fact that I’ll be able to book the private room at no charge. This is an incredible value for my business because the membership will pay for itself in less than two years - just in the amount of free food.”

LORIN DREYFUSS, Retired (Brother of actor, Richard Dreyfuss) “The Cuvée Club will offer the Temecula Valley the opportunity to have a first class dining experience with entertainment along the lines of the Rat Pack era. There is a void in the marketplace that this club can fill. The Temecula Valley will benefit from having a place where people can dress up, go out to dinner and be treated like royalty. My wife has been a jazz singer for many years and we love to support the music and entertainment industry.” For further information about the Founding Membership opportunity, please visit: www.thecuveeclub.com or contact me at collin@ thecuveeclub.com The Cuvée Club – Coming Soon to the Temecula Valley 714-615-4568 www.thecuveeclub.com

Making Music:

Young Violinist Ali Raye Hernandez

D

By Brittany Rose

escribed by her parents as loving and kind, Alina Raye Hernandez, (or Ali Raye, as everyone calls her) has an innocent, joyful spirit, but one of her best qualities is dedication. Ali Raye has been intently listening to her grandfather’s “story-telling” through music since she was born. Salvatore Venittelli held the principal violist position with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and noticed his granddaughter showed a passion for the violin. She begged him to teach her how to play from an early age and finally he handed Ali Raye her first violin at age six: That’s when she began to tell her own stories with music. Even with years of instructing others in playing the viola and the violin, Ali Raye’s “Papa” was surprised by her talent. Now a spunky 12-year-old 10

attending Vail Ranch Middle School in Temecula, Ali has really developed her abilities since beginning violin lessons. “My papa says, ‘Anybody can play notes, but it takes a special talent to really make music,’” shares Ali Raye. Committed to “make music,” she dedicates one to two hours everyday to practice. “I feel a big sense of accomplishment when I am able to master a difficult section of music or when I memorize an entire piece and perform it in front of a live audience,” Ali Raye smiles, her eyes bright. She has developed the ability to convey a full range of emotion with her music. Her parents, Denise and Mark, note that she is able to play with an expressiveness that often moves people to tears. Being a dedicated student doesn’t just apply to her music; Ali Raye also maintains top grades in school.

She enjoys playing with the Vail Ranch Middle School band as a guest soloist and has also been invited to play violin for several local events. Regardless of Ali Raye’s status as an only child, she is rarely alone. She lives with ten other family members and describes her home as a “big, happy, loving place.” Her parents encourage her ambition as she practices extremely difficult, professional-level pieces such as her latest venture - Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Ali Raye is fortunate to be surrounded by so many loving and supportive people, as she continues to master her talent. Watch for Ali Raye around town and perhaps you’ll even have the opportunity to witness the way she tells a story; drawing out emotion with the sounds of her violin.

handmade with love

here's nothing like a handmade gift. In our world of cheap plastics and disposable everything, handmade gifts really stand out. At MyCommunity Magazines, we know shopping locally is so important to a thriving and healthy economy. We love to support our friends and neighbors in their small businesses. There is an even a smaller level of local business often referred to as micro business. These types of businesses tend to offer unique, handmade items such as food (like homemade toffee), clothing, home decor, or other crafts. This month we are featuring local crafters who use their creativity to produce adorable and/or personalized items for the youngest people in our population: Babies! We hope you'll find something you love and help support “Momprenuers” in their business efforts!

went to the circus on opening night to interview Mariella Quiroga. She is 17 years old and she is a circus performer. When I met her she was wearing a bright costume and her makeup had sparkling jewels. She was very nice and looked happy, so I thought maybe I would like to be in the circus. Mariella performs in the circus with her 12-year-old sister, and her cousin, who is 16. They dance and wear pretty costumes. She and her

Author, Brooklyn Buchheit is 7 years old and is in 2nd grade. She loves to draw and dance. She's not sure what she wants to be when she grows up yet, but after attending the circus recently, she's considering being a performer in the circus. ;)

cousin do acrobatics on a lyra. A lyra looks like a hula hoop that hangs in the air. Mariella’s first performance was when she was 6. She worked for another circus and she got to do an act on the elephant! Mariella is the 8th generation of circus performers in her family. Her mom, dad, uncle, and cousins still perform. Her grandma used to do the high wire and she still works for the circus selling concessions. Mariella and her family travel

10 months out of the year to entertain people. When they are away from their homes, they live in an RV. Mariella still has to do homework and chores like cleaning her room, doing the dishes and helping with laundry. I think it would be fun to be in the circus. Maybe you get to eat free snow cones and cotton candy. I would like to be a funny clown because they get to do jokes and be crazy. MyTemeculaMag.com |

BNI provides a positive and structured system of networking which focuses on building relationships resulting in quality business referrals. BNI is the largest, most successful organization of its type in the world, located on every populated continent. In 2014, members of BNI passed 6.6 million referrals generating $8.6 BILLION dollars’ worth of business for its members! In Temecula Valley, BNI chapters generate millions of dollars in “Thank You For Closed Business” for local businesses every year!

Directory

Networking groups abound in Temecula Valley’s business community, but the members of one particular group wake up with a purpose every Wednesday morning. BNI Platinum Partners is a successful local business referral group of BNI, Business Network International.

“It’s putting money in my pocket,” explains Karen Wilds. “When people call after being referred by a member of BNI Platinum Partners, they already understand what I do and are ready to do business with me.” This is because using the BNI model, members get to know each other on a one-toone basis. This allows them to be very knowledgeable about one another on both a personal and professional level.

The BNI philosophy is simple: “Giver’s Gain®.” As members spend time helping others reach their professional goals, others are helping them to reach theirs. Solid relationships built on trust and experience back each referral and referrals are the key to the group’s success.

The meetings take place every Wednesday at the Broken Yolk Café from 7:00am to 8:30am. Breakfast is served as members take turns giving short, informative clips about their businesses which helps to expand referability while helping the speakers refine their presentation skills.

If you are looking for more business, and if referrals would help you achieve greater business success, then BNI Platinum Partners invites you to come and see how they can help you!

Fatigue

ne of the most common complaints people come to me with is fatigue. After ruling out heart and lung problems, anemia, blood sugar issues, and sleep apnea a typical primary care physician may tell you that you’re fine. Integrative practitioners will look further. Low thyroid is often missed. “Normal” lab values are not the same as “optimal” lab values. Typically with low thyroid you may also see dry skin or hair, constipation, and a difficulty losing weight; plus fatigue. Typically you will have fatigue in the morning and again mid afternoon. Low thyroid is easy to fix with a prescription of a natural thyroid replacement. Adrenal fatigue is also a common problem. Your adrenal glands help your body respond to stress and can easily get overloaded in today’s world. Some other symptoms you may notice are low blood sugar, salt cravings, and a fatigue that never goes away. To manage stress, schedule some time on your calendar just for you. Epsom salt baths are great; or try the Float Experience in Temecula for a real treat! Try unplugging from electronics and the outside world one day a week, Hatha yoga class, meditation, or deep breathing exercises daily. Avoid toxic people and situations (when you can) and watching the news. Making sure your Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone are balanced also help to keep your adrenals functioning well. An integrative medical practice may offer methyl B complex injections and Myer’s cocktails (IV vitamin C) to help support your adrenals. Low Testosterone can cause fatigue in both men and women. Other symptoms of low T include depression, increased aches/pains, night sweats, poor recovery from workouts, brain fog, or an overall decrease in vitality. Replacing your Testosterone can be done safely and effectively with bio-identical hormones. Candidiasis is an overgrowth of yeast that can often go months or even years without being diagnosed. This can present as fatigue, abdominal bloating, inability to lose weight, general aches, rashes, and/or sugar cravings. Getting a colonic by a colon therapist who has the training and ability to visibly see the candida is helpful.

Low Thyroid Adrenal Fatigue Candidiasis Dehydration

A customized yeast cleanse may require a prescription to adequately resolve the issue. Nutrition definitely affects energy. Food can heal you or it can make you sick–so pay attention to how different foods affect you. Reduce your intake of sugar and try to eliminate processed foods, focusing on organic vegetables and good protein sources instead. Dehydration can cause fatigue and tends to make you overeat. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight (pounds) in ounces. For example, a 150-pound person would drink 75 ounces of water per day. Have a purpose in life that drives you. Consider volunteering, leaning a new skill or sharing one of your hobbies with a friend. If you are “stuck in your head,” we’ve had many patients who have experienced success with hypnotherapy. The important thing here is to pay attention to your body. Being tired all of the time takes away quality of life. If you notice a change, don’t just tell yourself you’re getting older…. Take action! Blazing Tales /////////

The New Pets H

ey guys, it’s me your favorite dog, Blaze! A few months ago my people brought home some tasty looking chicken nuggets. Now, I’m a hunting dog, so when those little nuggets started to walk around my backyard I was eager to show mom and dad how I could catch them… but mom said no. She said they were baby chickens, not chicken nuggets and we should protect them because they are our pets. Pets? But I’m their pet. I was determined not to make friends with the new “pets.” I heard the kids talking about how cool it will be when we have eggs from the chickens. I nudged the people to remind them that I am cool too. One day a little chick came over to me in the back yard while I was relaxing in the sun. She tried to snuggle up to me. “No, little chicken” I frowned. “I am not your friend.” I moved away. A few minutes later that little red chicken was cuddling up to me again. One of the kids saw and said, “Hey look, Blaze has a pet!” Then all my people came out to look and said how cute we were. I love it when my people think I’m cute. So, I let the chicken snuggle… a little. Pretty soon the chicken was following me all around. I guess we are friends now that she’s my pet. One night, I heard coyotes howling outside. I whined and whined until my people let me go outside to check on my chicken. I was relieved when I saw she was ok. Now I check all around the property each night before I leave my pet chicken in her coop to sleep. I love my chicken.

tep into Mr. Justin Shultz’s third grade classroom at Rancho Christian Elementary School and you may think you’ve stepped into the land of Narnia, as described in a C.S. Lewis book. Although you’d never guess it now, Justin started out as a mediocre student. His grades suffered from an early age, mainly due to, “slow reading and little to no comprehension.” Resigned to his educational challenge, he put his time and effort into what he was good at: music. When his high school band, “The Chemistry,” was signed to a record label, he felt he had “made it.” Justin toured the country for three years, hanging out with other bands, writing and performing music, and living his Rock Star dream. But at 23 years old, while dating his sweetheart and contemplating marriage,

he knew it was time to work on creating a life better suited to a family. That’s when he made the choice to return to Temecula and eventually to college to face his reading challenge head on. Justin wanted to do something “soulful” besides music and chose to conquer the world of education and become a teacher. “Reading was the bane of my existence,” Justin recalls, “But I wanted to give it another try.” It only took one beginning level reading class in college to change the direction of Justin’s life. His professor was the English Department Supervisor, Melinda Carrillo. She gave him the encouragement he needed to face his fears, some helpful tips, and showed Justin that he was actually good at reading all along! This newfound confidence propelled through his schooling as he attended classes at three different

colleges to keep moving at a quick pace. The shift in his thinking helped him to overcome and move beyond his biggest challenge. He committed to finish his degree in English, of all things. His ultimate goal was to teach in a Christian school, so as he entered his year of student teaching, he was glad to gain experience at Rancho Christian. Upon completing his internship, he felt once again, that he had “made it.” His experience in conquering his own reading struggles has made him a sensitive yet encouraging coach to his students. “Like music, teaching is creative and you can always get better,” Justin explains. “I love that it takes your entire heart and soul in order to do it well.” Justin sees purpose in the journey that brought him from adolescence to where his is now. He’s eager to impact the future generation in a positive way. As Justin has seen, his experience has contributed to his passion for helping upcoming generations discover a love of reading.

Help, I’m not sure I am going to have my taxes done by the deadtline. Will I have to pay a penalty teven if I file an extension?

t tThere is no penalty to file an exten-

sion, but remember, the extension is only for filing a tax return; not on paying money that may be due. Your taxes are due on April 15th even if you file an extension to file your tax return. How many people file extensions

teach year? t tMore than 10 million taxpayers file tfor extension every year. In fact, the state of California offers an automatic extension with the filing for a federal extension.

I’m not sure I want to pay someone else to file my taxes. Why tuse a professional when I can go tonline and file my own taxes?

t tMany people complete their own

tax filing without the assistance of a professional. Some of the benefits of using a professional is that we follow all of the changes in tax law and help our clients maximize their deductions. Keep in mind that having a professional file your taxes is

not necessarily expensive. If you have a simple return, a professional file your taxes for very little payment. Most people, who change over from doing their own taxes to using a professional, never go back to filing their own taxes. A great CPA provides so much more than just tax filings. They can work with you to help you accomplish your financial goals. What is the best way to prepare

ttoday for my 2015 taxes? t tMake sure you are paying your tfederal tax bill for 2015 based on

year and have a lower refund in 2016. I donated a lot of stuff to my favorite charities this year. How tdo I take the deduction?

t tYour tax professional can help you twith that. If you are making a donation of non-cash items (household goods and clothing), take a picture of what is being donated. It makes it easier to substantiate the amount of deduction you are taking.
