Thanks for picking up Little Guide Augusta! Little Guide Augusta exists for one purpose, and one purpose only: to tell the story of local business heroes while creating a shop local culture. We do this in a visually compelling manner, and have created a book that people love to love! We had such fun putting this year’s book together, and we hope you enjoy learning about our local business partners as much as we have! The Small Business Association states that businesses employing fewer than 100 people, just like our partners in Little Guide Augusta, account for 98.2% of all businesses in the country. These businesses are major drivers of economic growth, though many have closed due to the changes in the economy caused by Covid19. Therefore, supporting small/local businesses has become more important than ever. We hope you take a moment to visit our partners, and make sure to tell them you learned about them in Little Guide!

Abel Brown, a southern kitchen and oyster bar located in Surrey Center, is renowned for its authentic approach to Southern cuisine. The Usry family’s business roots run deep in Augusta... In the 1940s, Horace Usry, the original “Fat Man,” took over his father’s grocery store and changed the name to Fat Man’s Corner. This eventually became the well-loved Fat Man’s Forest (a store that sold gifts and seasonal decor). Horace’s son, Brad, drove Fat Man’s Forest and Fat Man’s Chow to success in the ‘80s, and this eventually led him to open his first of many restaurants—Cotton Row Café. Brad’s son, Havird, grew up in these kitchens helping his dad and grandmother, Carolyn Usry, a former Augusta City Councilwoman. Havird now serves as a partner, but the hands-on exposure to life in the kitchen fueled Hav’s passion of both business and culinary arts. Featuring “soul good” food, Fat Man’s is renowned for its southern fare, including the best squash casserole in town. Located at historic Enterprise Mill, Fat Man’s Mill Café has enjoyed widespread growth and demand. The Usry’s goal is to bring southern hospitality to the world through their lunches, catering, venues and service, and they keep doing just that… one dish at a time.

When they went on their second date at Inner Bean Café, Fiona and Shane Lysse never suspected it would one day belong to them. The couple, who met in Augusta, fell in love with Inner Bean Café for its welcoming atmosphere, freshly roasted Batdorf & Bronson coffee, and homebaked goods. So, when the original owners put Inner Bean Café on the market in 2017, the couple decided to take the leap into the local coffee culture. Cakes and desserts are baked from scratch, in-house daily, as are all seasonal specials, soups, sandwiches, wraps, smoothies and milkshakes. There’s a wide-ranging breakfast menu, and Inner Bean is excited to have recently opened a second location in the Beacon Station Apartments which are part of the Laney Walker Medical District. The much loved coffeehouse is a prominent feature of downtown, occupying the corner of 11th and Broad Streets. Metro serves up high-end espresso and coffee based drinks (non-alcoholic or fully leaded), desserts, and of course, a full bar. Manoj Parameswaran has enjoyed more than 20 years progressively sharpening his skills in the kitchen, including time as chef for the Augusta National. A passion for great food, and a developing desire to manage the business behind serving food made the progression from chef to restaurant owner a natural one. While looking for a location to share his Indian heritage, Manoj realized the Evans area was ready for more ethnic flavors, and pursued the path to own his own place. Standing by him through all of his success is his wife, Sujitha Manoj and their children, Nayan and Neha. Rather than get mired down in a formal setting, Manoj decided to establish something more accessible and fast-casual, and the idea of popular Indian street food items fit the bill. The restaurant offers an inviting atmosphere where diners can enjoy a range of street foods, such as dosa, butter chicken, garlicky cauliflower and kulcha. Manoj wants customers to enjoy a quality experience so he uses only the best ingredients, often locally sourced. With convenience in mind, the Namaste Indian Street Food social media and website offers diners the chance to see the menu, a selection of signature dishes and specials, as well as a platform for online ordering.

The restaurant, Noble Jones, is understated, elegant, welcoming and very Southern. At its helm is J.D. Wier, who brings his culinary vision to life by providing a vibrant menu of seasonal dishes. The name of the restaurant is a nod to an English carpenter from Herefordshire who resided in Georgia, commanded Georgia’s Northern Company of Marines, became a Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives and eventually played a leading role during the Revolutionary War. The menu reflects J.D.’s travel experiences throughout the Southeast. Therefore, local palates will be particularly thrilled with many of his recipes, including his Catfish Po’ boy, Fried Pickled Okra, Robust Brisket or Smoked Fried Chicken. J.D. is excited about adding a high-end, retail wine store into the mix. Diners will be able to purchase bottles to drink in the restaurant or to take home. And new in 2021, weekend brunch will be served! Whether sitting outside on the charming patio or enjoying the quaint ambiance of the brick-walled interior, diners will fall for the classic decor, friendly service, quality drinks and delicious dishes at Noble Jones.

“Back home in Illinois, we did a lot of life in coffee shops. It’s where we built relationships,” said Heather Needles, who co-owns Rooted Coffeehouse with her daughter, Ali Kocher. “When we moved here almost five years ago, we were missing that aspect of daily life. We also saw that we were living in an ever-changing and diverse community that was used to doing daily life independently. That became the catalyst for opening Rooted. There is a desire to deliver a quality product and also a comfortable space for community, fellowship, and doing life alongside others.” Rooted Coffeehouse, located in the Market at Riverwood, opened its doors in February 2018. The mother and daughter duo said the name came from uprooting from familiar small town rural Illinois and moving to Evans, Georgia. It was their new home and they were putting down “roots” that would grow as they became established in a new community, experienced new adventures in the Peach State, and made memories as a family. Heather is a mother to six children, three who still live at home, while Ali has her own family with a husband and infant daughter.

After owner, Brad Stone, couldn’t find a local source to provide the fresh-roasted coffee beans that he loved, Stone started home-roasting. First he did it for himself, then to provide coffee to churches on Sunday mornings. Inevitably, he was essentially forced to open his eponymous café to keep up with demand. At that point, Stone Roastery was born, and Brad Stone was a rock star. Stone starts with 100 percent top-grade Arabica beans from small plantations around the world. The beans make their way to North Augusta, where they are roasted in-house. Finally, they are served in a huge variety of ways—there are traditional pour-over coffees… cold brews… espresso concoctions… flat whites… breves… affogatos—you name it. The beans are for sale in the store, or you can be order your favorite style of roast online. The roadside roastery achieves a quirky, laid-back vibe with its interesting brew of hip beverages, collection of comforting cakes baked by Brad’s mom and wife, and welcoming southern manners and décor. Ice cream at Daniel Village is a decades-long standing tradition on “The Hill.” Having been absent in the last few years, Village Deli owner Heather Chancey seized on the opportunity to revive the experience. When the space next door to the Deli opened up—which happened to be the ORIGINAL Deli—she snatched it up, and the rest is rich, sweet, delicious history. The next step was that Heather had to learn about making ice cream! While attending the Vollrath Frozen Dessert Institute, she learned how to craft simple ingredients into rich, delectable ice creams. For the last three years, she has brought ten flavors to happy customers each and every day. All ice creams are made in house. They are never, EVER shipped or deep frozen, and only the highest quality ingredients are used. Heather’s favorite part of making ice cream is the freedom to be creative with the flavors she creates. A customer favorite among adults is maple bacon, and the kids seem to prefer the cotton candy flavor… probably because it’s blue! Come see what all the fuss is about at Summerville Scoops!

There are now 27 stores all still using the same recipe that has been used since the 1950s when the store first opened. All products are made in house, and the main ingredients of every flavor of custard are milk, cream, sugar and eggs. The end product is creamy and smooth. However, it is not a soft serve ice cream, and it is never pre-frozen. Why The Meadows? Well, Brandon and Bethann worked together at The Meadows when they were in college! Today, they have created a shop with everything you could want in an ice cream store and more. There are two new flavors of frozen custard every day, along with Italian ices and espresso-based drinks too. Get yourself to The Meadows, and taste the difference!

Father and son duo, Brad and Havird Usry, are known for their soul food and top notch catering. But they are just as well known for their dedication to healthy living. For years, the two envisioned opening a local fast food restaurant that served gourmet salads, grain bowls, and fresh smoothies— a concept they could see a demand for in burgeoning downtown Augusta. Fast forward to 2018, and The Southern Salad, also known as SoSal, opened on Broad Street under the management of Chef Havird and another Augusta local, Chef Jeremy Miller. The restaurant uses farm-to-table sources, growing its own Clean Greens using hydroponic farming. SoSal is known for its friendly service, fresh, seasonal gourmet menu and healthy snack options. The posh restaurant is also a vibrant and supportive community hub: they promote sustainability and stewardship; and they actively engage in local health-focused organizations, like Paceline and Augusta Locally Grown. SoSal also offers catered dining options and a venue for private events. And while the interior is beautiful, nothing beats enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of their covered back patio and the Ellis Street Garden.

Vance’s Bakery Bar, a unique concept-bar, is a 21-and-over cocktail lounge serving boozy treats in a mid-century modern environment. Located in a beautiful, fully restored two-story brick building built in 1892, the original building was built to house a saloon, and Vance’s Bakery Bar occupies the stables where patrons kept their horses. Owners Troy and Amy Adamo came up with the one-of-a-kind concept after posing the age-old question to each other, “What would you do if you could do anything?” Troy, a retired US Air Force Master Sergeant, wanted to run a bar. Amy, a 20+ year HR manager and recruiter, wanted to bake. They decided to do both. With both owners certified as Mixologists, the concept came to fruition. Vance’s offers nine signature drinks plus a full bar, craft beer, local coffee, and wine. Their menu contains 11 items plus weekly specials, and offers patrons owner-created, baked-fresh, boozy desserts such as Bourbon Chocolate Chip Cookies, and a variety of delicious cupcakes. There are also vegan and gluten free options. Take some time to enjoy the decadence at Vance’s Bakery Bar.

Located in Daniel Village, one of the oldest shopping centers in the south, the Village Deli is a neighborhood favorite and iconic Augusta hometown diner owned and operated by Heather Chancey. Heather, a longtime employee, purchased the Village Deli after devoting several years to the establishment. Its spacious dining areas and friendly bar offer a range of seating suitable for everything from intimate dates to larger family dinners. The atmosphere is always welcoming and friendly. The Deli, as locals call it, is well known for its burgers, which are hand crafted daily using fresh ground beef from the local Doug’s Meat Shop. Although known for their burgers, the Deli’s extensive menu encourages customers to be adventurous, dig deep and find their personal favorites. Oversized salads and handmade sandwiches such as their Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich are hugely popular, as are the southern-inspired dinner plates. Diners also love chowing down on one of the Village Deli’s delicious desserts such as the Carrot Cake and Milky Way Mousse Pie. Augusta is full of good people—this is a fact. However, you will be hard pressed to find anyone as gracious and friendly as the Scholer family, owners of Wild Wing Café. Establishing the restaurant in Augusta allowed Tricie and Jan Scholer and their family to open a place that welcomed people from all over the region to enjoy great food and live music. Thanks to its dynamic architecture, Wild Wing Café boasts spacious dining areas, a large wraparound bar, and a massive outdoor covered seating area. Supporters of law enforcement and local health initiatives, Wild Wing has become a second home to the Scholer family and many of the kitchen and wait staff since it opened in 2004. They have forged a culture of attentive service and community engagement. And, the laid-back restaurant features a broad menu of American fare, including their signature wings, burgers, soups and salads, wraps, and sandwiches. Wild Wing’s full bar, live music and trivia night makes the restaurant a desired destination for date nights, families, large groups and parties.

Will’s Dills are the result of musician Will McCranie’s passion for all things pickled. The story goes that in the summer of 2012, a bloody mary party was in the works, and it seemed simply inconceivable to serve store bought pickles for the occasion. In his shoebox of an apartment in Sunnyside, Queens, Will quickly set out to create a test batch of spicy habanero dills that would later be named “Devil Dills.” He also acquiesced and concocted a non-spicy batch that would eventually be known as “PG-13s”—the perfect garlic dill. Fast forward a few years, including a relocation back home to Augusta, the pickle project returned with a vengeance. Will enlisted three of his closest friends and, in addition to the Devil Dills and PG-13s, the team introduced a new flavor of sweet heat pickles called Backwoods B+Bs. Shortly after, Savannah River Brewing released a limited edition pickle beer using Will’s Dills PG-13s called “Wit is the Dill?” Will’s Dills can currently be found in select stores in the CSRA, including The Southern Salad, and the team can often be found slinging dills at pop up events in the area.

She has been blogging (read journaling) about the foods of the world since the Pre-Internet Era. With the help of 20+ dealers, Mema Had One prides itself on offering the unique and obscure... the casual and fun. Their mantra is “peace, love and junk.” Mema Had One embraces the integrity and quality of the past, while also honoring its simple, and sometimes primitive, ways. What’s in a name? “Mema” was the term of endearment for co-owner, Pam Hayes’ grandmother. The next time you’re strolling around the shop and spot an interesting old object, chances are, your Mema had one too! Pam started collecting at age 14 and after 20 years had a collection big enough to open a store! The other co-owner, Candice Lee, and her mama run the day-to-day operations of the store. 2021 marks 10 years the store has been open in the Augusta area. Pam and Candice are grateful to the community for their support and look forward to seeing you in the store!

If a photo is worth 1000 words, then photographer Whitney Boykin of High Cotton Photography has a LOT to say! Whitney is originally from Augusta, and she has always loved photography. However it wasn’t until she had her own family that she came to understand the importance photography plays in documenting the history of a family. Whitney started her business at a time when she was living in a new town and had some time on her hands. Using her own daughter as her subject, she learned the nuances of the craft and created best practices. Then, Whitney started shooting for family and friends. Eventually referrals started rolling in, and High Cotton Photography was born. Now she works in both natural light and studio settings. She captures weddings, events, couples, individuals and families. One of the most gratifying parts of her work is forming relationships and growing with families over the years. The compelling imagery that Whitney creates for High Cotton Photography has even earned her the title of Cyber City’s Best Photographer in 2019 and 2020. Schedule your photo shoot today!

Skin care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity… These words are ones that esthetician Mirenda Petrea lives by. Mirenda, owner of Spa Bleu, has been in the aesthetic industry for more than 20 years, but skin care has been her passion since she was a child. Her career began as a makeup artist. Then, after an Esthetician apprenticeship, she began pampering clients with facials, hair removal, glycolic treatments, and makeup sessions. More than just offering these essential services, Mirenda wants to give her clients an exclusive experience with individual attention. Spa Bleu’s space is small and quaint, accommodating only a few clients at a time. She has assembled a dynamic staff of specialists who care about their clients as much as Mirenda does—including a Master Stylist, Massage Therapist, and a Skincare and Beauty Specialist (offering body wraps, lash lifts, nail services and more). Spa Bleu offers spa day packages, ranging from 2.5 to 5 hours in length and including a variety of services, and carries a carefully curated collection of products. Leslie Kavanagh is an entrepreneur at heart. Following in her dad’s footsteps, Leslie ventured into business in the field of personal care with extraordinary results… certainly not what she expected when she graduated with a biology degree 20+ years ago. Although she dedicated her studies to a field she felt would provide her with a steady job, biology wasn’t as appealing as cosmetology… so Leslie retrained. In 2011, she learned about sugaring, an ancient Egyptian hair removal technique that is kinder to the body than waxing. And in 2013, Leslie seized the opportunity to bring sugaring to the Augusta area. Fast forward to 2019 when Leslie opened Sugar and Comb, a hair salon and sugaring studio consisting of two stylists and two hair removal specialists. Sugaring is a unique technique—there are no strips, no burning, no bacteria and less pain than traditional waxing. Sugaring is suitable for people with even the most sensitive skin. Recently, Leslie became certified as a Sugaring Educator and can now share her expertise by training and certifying other cosmetologists locally. Sugar and Comb truly takes personal care to a different level!

When Adrienne Mann was a young girl, she LIVED for the weekends when she could enjoy slumber parties with her friends. As a mom, she has always LOVED decorating for her kids’ birthday parties and felt nostalgic about them sharing the same fun experiences. So, when Adrienne saw that some small businesses were providing glamorous slumber party extravaganzas, she knew she wanted to bring them to the Augusta area. Adrienne provides many unique, and custom themed slumber party experiences. The packages include setup and breakdown of tents, mattresses, pillows, fairy lights, blankets, trays, lanterns, garlands and other various decor pieces. She also offers other services too that can even be enjoyed by adults, such as outdoor glamping, yard letters, outdoor movie parties and more! One of the best parts of the business is being able to work with her kids and husband, who test out all of the themes and ideas, and they also help her set up the parties. While Adrienne never really considered being an entrepreneur before she began Sweet Dreaming, she’s glad she did and absolutely LOVES seeing the smiles on kids’ faces when her work is complete.

Undertone Salon stands for unity and individualism. A true passion project brought to vivid life, the salon is home to a group of talented beauty professionals, guided by the steady head of the über-talented owner/operator, Taylar Janelle Prince. Part nod to cultural icons David Bowie and Edgar Allen Poe, and part expressive and creative escape from convention, the Salon’s newly expanded interior is a visual pleasure as much as it is a center for beautification and pampering. Designed to delight, customers are invited to relax in this space. You’ll want to be sure and check out the new Bridal Loft! Services run the gamut of simple trims to the most extravagant hair around, including color services, extensions, massage therapy, body waxing, facials, cosmetic injections, nail services and bridal/special event hair and makeup. Much of what the team delivers is bold and progressive, but the quality of work exudes professionalism and belies an expert and experienced approach. Some might say Undertone was meant to be, as it is located in the exact building that housed Augusta’s school of cosmetology back in the 1800s. Check out Undertone’s unique approach to beauty today.

This is Jess—a CrossFit Coach and Financial Advisor. To Jess, building wealth is like building strength: not everyone starts at the same place and not everyone has the same advantages, and no single strategy fits everyone. Even if you cannot see financial health for yourself yet, Jess can. As your guide, she helps you envision what is possible, encourages you when life gets heavy, and ultimately helps you build a life you love. One of Jess’s favorite and proudest moments is when someone realizes for the first time, that they have what it takes. That THEY can do things they never really thought were possible before. In the gym, people learn pull-ups and PRs; in financial planning, people build homes and send kids to college. At the end of the day, it’s all about fulfilling dreams. Because money and health are currencies in this life, both are needed until a person’s last day on earth. Being trusted to help others build and manage these is a gift for which Jess will forever be grateful. When you’re ready to begin your wealth building journey, give Jess a call. For over 40 years, Powell & Associates, Inc. has been on the forefront of innovation and service for the CSRA in real estate. The company began in 1992 with its founder Marcene Powell in Lincolnton, GA. Not only did she open the first real estate firm there, but it was also the first woman-owned business. This broke all preconceived notions of what women could do. She made a profound impact on one girl specifically, her daughter Nancy. Nancy went to work for the family brokerage in 1999. In 2010, Nancy returned to college earning a degree from Augusta University. While continuing in real estate, she also worked in politics for several years, running the campaigns of US Congressmen and US Senators. In 2015, she returned full-time to real estate and decided to expand into the Augusta/Aiken Market. She easily fell back into an industry that she loved, helping fulfill people’s dreams through homeownership. In 2020, Nancy became the owner/ broker of her mother’s company, Powell & Associates, Inc. and relocated the main office to Downtown Augusta. For residential, commercial, land or lakefront properties in the CSRA give Powell & Associates a call!

After dozens of real estate closings and more than four years in real estate, Sallie Shuford, Your Hometown Girl + Realtor has learned a LOT of things. She’s learned that people want what they want. When tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars are on the line, people ought to get what they want, by golly, and that’s what she helps them do. She’s learned that LOCATION. REALLY. DOES. MATTER. She’s learned that details matter too, whether details built into a home, written into a contract or acted out between two people. They can make or break a house, a contract, a relationship. Finally, she’s learned that MOVING. IS. HARD. Aside from logistics, packing, disorganization, reorganization, MOVING CAN BE HARD ON YOUR HEART. Moving isn’t always predicated by easy circumstances, and Sallie is there for her clients, not just to ensure a smooth sale but to help reframe and absorb the emotional stress moving can cause. She is an empathetic Realtor with the capacity to understand not just the joys of moving but the trials too. Give her a call today to discuss YOUR move.
