If you’re looking for your “meat and two,” come on over to Dawson’s Kitchen, where you can get that and SO much more! In addition to serving delicious, Southernstyle soul food, they have a deli with ready-to-go favorites, a bakery with cakes like Grandma makes and a market with the freshest local produce in town. Susan Moore and her late husband Dawson first opened Dawson’s Kitchen in 1996. They have created a homey environment where you will see familiar faces cooking your food and serving it to you too, and you’re likely to even bump into your friends there. The longtime cook, Patsy Bivens, is the genius in the kitchen. She cooks by heart without a recipe or measuring spoon to be found. Some customer favorites are fried chicken, beef tips on rice, collard greens and—everyone’s favorite—macaroni and cheese. The team at Dawson’s Kitchen loves the work they do, and when you take a trip there, this will be evident in every mouthful.

Since 2006, Ernesto Aguirre has been running El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant with the help of his long-time general manager, Benny Vazquez. Benny recently stepped into the kitchen to help serve Ernesto’s Mexican, made-from-scratch family recipes with his own personal flair. With the help of Benny’s wife, Andrea—who he met while working together at El Sombrero— and their family, the restaurant’s newly freshened menu and atmosphere are better than ever. El Sombrero dives into a space not reserved for conventional Mexican dishes with a bold selection of taco fillings, including grilled mahi-mahi and fresh avocado. The Mexican Street Corn Dip served with chips or wrapped in a tortilla, coupled with a margarita, is a crowd pleaser. Ernesto worked with his wife, Paula, to create new fan-favorite dishes—like the Camarones Enchilados and Torta Ahogada—and he showed Benny how to make them with his own salsa creations. Community and family focused, El Sombrero is a frequent gathering spot for birthday dinners, business meetings and families enjoying a bite after practice or a game. Ernesto and his family actively support a wide range of local charitable organizations, including Wesley Glen Ministries, Jay’s Hope Foundation, United in Pink, and Central Georgia Autism Foundation.

There are two things that most all Georgians love… sitting on the deck with friends and eating delicious food. If YOU’RE one of those many folks, AND you’re in Macon, you’re in LUCK! Fish N’ Pig, a lakefront restaurant just outside of Macon’s city limits, has it all! Owned by John S. McCord, of Satterfield’s, Dr. Alan Justice and Molly Smith, Fish N’ Pig has been fryin’ fish and smokin’ up barbecue ever since October 2008. At Fish N’ Pig, on beautiful Lake Tobesofkee, you’ll enjoy fresh-caught seafood from Georgia and Florida that goes from water to table in fewer than 24 hours. And, the barbecued meats served all come from a farm not even 30 miles away. The newlyrefurbished, wrap-around deck and full bar even stay open after the restaurant has closed, so you can enjoy your drinks under the stars. Drive on over to Fish N’ Pig, or you can even take your boat and dock it there while you eat. The atmosphere is perfectly casual and casually perfect… from the live music to the great food, you’ll want to sit on the deck at Fish N’ Pig again and again.

When you bite into the deliciousness served at Fresh Air, you get real, old-school barbeque… from hams that have been slowly smoked overnight… served next to homemade, red, vinegar-based sauce… with a side of Brunswick stew… and maybe some coleslaw… all prepared from recipes handed down through FOUR generations of family owners. THIS is what makes Fresh Air so special. Dr. Joel Watkins, the original proprietor, had what was essentially a road-side stand with a sawdust floor on the Atlanta Highway in Jackson. “The Barbeque Place,” as it was known then, had a very simple menu, nevertheless, it became a popular stop for travelers. In 1945, Butts County native, George W. “Toots” Caston, who had been managing the establishment for years, purchased the joint and eventually developed it into the Georgia institution known and loved today. Enjoy the renowned barbeque at the original location in Jackson and in Macon too, where the family continues to maintain “Toots’” commitment to top quality foods at Fresh Air Bar-B-Que reasonable prices. 1164 Highway 42 S Jackson, GA 30233

Just a twenty-minute drive from Macon in downtown Forsyth, across from the courthouse, there is a sweet, southern-charm cafe called Grits. Located in a historical building, it still holds the original late 1800s storefront. The cafe has many European influences and displays beautiful art which add to the calming, southern-style, sophisticated spot. Leslie Waters, front-of-house manager, and Jamie Waters, executive chef, had worked there a combined 28 years. Under their watchful eye and taste for excellence, the restaurant thrived. When ownership changed, they were asked to bring back their golden teamwork to run it again. The cafe features a full bar and amazing dishes like the grilled ahi tuna, famous shrimp and grits and a beloved chicken panini. Each of their dishes are classically Southern with creative twists that customers can’t get enough of. Grits Cafe also has two private-dining rooms which can be combined into one, seating up to 60 people. Whether on a stroll through a historic corner in Forsyth or arranging a dining party, Grits Cafe is one excellent place worthy of trying.

Three good friends—Richie Jones, Brian Adams, and Ryan Griffin—all loved a pizza spot near their homes in Mercer Village. They scooped it up and made it theirs, naming it JAG’s for their last names—Jones, Adams, Griffin. With a few alterations and a freshened up menu, the pizzeria became a college-friendly hotspot of New York-style, thin crust goodness. JAG’s has monthly seasonal pizzas made with all local ingredients, including peaches, strawberries, mushrooms, pork and much more. If you’re not in a pizza mood or just wanting some variety, JAG’s also offers salads, sandwiches, and five flavors of wings. It would really be tough to miss out on that pizza, though… praised for its crust derived from their amazing dough made in-house. A full bar with 16 draft beers, including those from local breweries, is also available. In the back, there are arcade machines for all to enjoy, and patrons are surrounded by TVs showing a variety of sports. If you’re ever hankering for bingo, trivia or karaoke nights, along with excellent pizza and wings, step over to JAG’s Pizzeria and Pub. And remember “it’s all about the dough!”

When new owners assumed management of Jim Shaw’s Seafood by Skipper Zimmerman, not one of them wanted to change a single thing about the restaurant they knew and loved. They recognized that Skipper’s model of fresh fish, driven in weekly from the Georgia coast, wasn’t broken and didn’t need fixing. For thirty years, the restaurant created a legacy of delicious, fresh seafood from coastal Georgia. The new owners felt so strongly about keeping things the same that they retained Jim Shaw’s long-time manager to train new employees on how to run the business. They were even able to keep Skipper around, who still delivers Jim Shaw’s weekly seafood shipments straight from Brunswick. Inside, there’s a casual, family-friendly dining area; outside, you’ll find a relaxing patio with a full bar and walk-up service. Their menu features crowd-pleasing Georgia shrimp, Gulf oysters and a variety of select, in-season fish. Having been voted as the most delicious seafood restaurant in Macon, Jim Shaw’s prides itself on its incredible seafood and affordable prices. If you’re looking to sit with a cocktail in one hand and shrimp in the other, Jim Shaw’s is the place to go.

An authentic Mexican taqueria serving tacos, tortas, sopes, burritos and more, La Bella Morelia has a history as a sought-out Macon destination. The restaurant’s original roots were planted at Smiley’s Flea Market before moving to a small location Downtown. As demand for their authentic Mexican food continued to grow, the chef and family’s matriarch, Angelica Marín, and her children moved to La Bella’s current home on Mulberry Street in January 2019. Featuring many top shelf tequilas and unique craft drink recipes that perfectly complement the menu, La Bella Morelia has quickly gained a reputation as a great place to meet for a business lunch or to enjoy a casual dinner before catching a show at one of Downtown’s nearby theaters. The food is always fresh and tasty, and the experience evokes strong emotions from long-time patrons—customers rave about the friendly, thoughtful service and La Bella’s authenticity; it’s not uncommon to hear people talk about the delicious asada, al pastor, and chorizo. Earning top vote for Best Ethnic Food in 2018, La Bella delivers the authentic Mexican experience in both delicious cuisine and friendly customer service!

The goodness that is the Taste & See Coffee Shop & Gallery came to be in 2013 when owners, Bryan Nichols and Kevin Reaves, put their heads together to solve a couple of problems. Bryan and Kevin felt there needed to be a family-friendly gathering space Downtown, and Kevin sought a place to display his photography. Their study of the community’s needs showed that a warm community gathering place was needed where all ages were welcome, young and old. And because coffee shops frequently ground the areas where they’re located, they decided to help elevate an area of Downtown Macon that had once seen better days by locating their new shop there. What they have now is a family-friendly coffee shop and photo gallery located in a now-thriving section of Downtown Macon. A visit to Taste & See is not your typical “grab and go” schtick… it’s an EXPERIENCE. You’ll find Kevin’s expressive landscape photography adorning the walls, meeting rooms for groups, intimate spaces for quiet conversations and patio seating replete with fire pit. AND, let’s not forget the café! With their smoothies, made of fresh, organic fruit, you will NOT be disappointed. And because Bryan and Kevin both believe in high-quality products, the coffee is AMAZING. Voted Best of the Best eight years running, you’ll want to stop by (to) Taste & See.

The Johnston-Felton-Hay House in Macon, affectionately known as the “Palace of the South,” is a property of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and stands as one of the most iconic and recognizable structures in Georgia. Completed in 1859 for Mr. and Mrs. William Butler Johnston, the house is considered one of the finest examples of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture in America. The 18,000 square-foot mansion features an array of art, decorative finishes, stained glass, and gilded cornices. When completed, the building had many modern amenities including a ventilation system, indoor plumbing, central heat, gas lighting and a 15-tube intercom system. For over 100 years, the house was home to the Johnston-Felton and Hay families. After the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Hay in 1964, it was established as a private museum. In 1971 the house was registered as a National Historic Landmark and in 1977 became a property of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. They then went to work figuring out how to turn the buildings’ fates around, improve Downtown and create a fun, family-friendly experience. So, whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll be able to come down and enjoy one of the four types of climbing offered—bouldering, top-rope, auto-belay and lead climbing. Parties, summer camps, classes and other activities are offered. Why not try something new? See you there!

The Museum of Aviation, located at Robins Air Force Base, opened to the public in 1984 with 20 aircraft on display in an open field and another 20 that were in various stages of restoration. Today, four full-size hangars house more than 85 historic aircraft, missiles and climb-in cockpits that are visited by more than 600,000 patrons every year. The Museum is a place that honors Veterans and their families and reminds our Airmen of their legendary Air Force heritage. The most popular aircraft in the museum is the actual SR71 Blackbird that broke the world speed record in 1975 by going 2,193.2 miles per hour… that’s approximately 3.3 times the speed of sound! Other popular aircraft on display are the F15, B29, B52, B1 and the C130 Hercules. It can take up to six years to fully restore an aircraft, and lots of volunteers on the ground. Visitors will also enjoy exploring history with exhibits, videos, virtual reality simulations and more. Located just south of Macon, the Museum of Aviation is a hands-on, interactive experience that can be enjoyed by everyone. Plan your trip today, and remember, admission is free!

12,000 years of continuous human habitation. That’s the depth of history visitors experience at the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park— a well-preserved prehistoric American Indian site and the ancestral homeland of the Muscogee People. Experience a wealth of information about people and cultures from millennia past. First occupied during the Paleo-Indian period, Ocmulgee Mounds was then a site where hunters tracked Ice Age mammals. Now developed into public park land, the site offers the perfect backdrop for its visitors to learn about the many different American Indian cultures that occupied this land for thousands of years. Step inside the fascinating, over 1000-yearold, Earth Lodge—carbon dating has placed its floors at around 1015. The Visitor Center hosts over 2000 artifacts including a short educational film; and the seven mounds plus eight miles of hiking and biking trails boast diverse terrain and breathtaking views of downtown Macon. Gather family and friends to enjoy the evening Lantern Light Tour during Macon’s International Cherry Blossom Festival, the Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration during the third weekend in September, and a host of other special events updated regularly on their website. Home to The Allman Brothers Band’s original members, their families, and various friends from 1970 to 1973, The Big House allows the unique opportunity to experience the surroundings of the rock and roll tenants of the 18-room home. Berry Oakley, his wife Linda, their daughter, Berry Oakley’s sister Candy Oakley, Duane Allman, his wife Donna, their daughter, and Gregg Allman all called The Big House home. In fact, Dickey Betts wrote “Blue Sky” in the living room and “Ramblin’ Man” in the kitchen. Renovated by The Big House Foundation in 2009, the interactive museum preserves the history of The Allman Brothers Band. It contains the world’s largest collection of Band memorabilia, and the gift shop has a collection of items sure to please any fan! The Big House celebrates Macon’s own rich musical heritage by sharing the joy of music with our youth—the Museum is a popular field trip destination for schools, camps, scouts and homeschool groups. It’s also a unique event venue. Rent the Big House for weddings, corporate events, and private parties, or enjoy live musical performances throughout the year.

History comes alive in Macon in all sorts of ways, and most especially at The Cannonball House, christened as such because of the artillery shell that ended up in its foyer during the Civil War. Constructed in 1853 in the Greek Revival architectural style, it was built for the Judge Asa Holt family and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During a Union siege on Macon, the home was fired on by Union troops from across the Ocmulgee River. The artillery shell hit the sand sidewalk and entered into the house unexploded. Until 1962, the home was lived in by descendants of Judge Holt. Today, the house is still filled with a fine collection of the family’s antiques and features a hand-molded, two-story brick kitchen and fully furnished servants’ quarters. The Friends of the Cannonball House, Inc. manage and present the structure as a house museum notable for its promotion of Georgia’s heritage. The two parlors even house recreations of meeting rooms for the Adelphean (ΑΔΠ) and Philomathean (ΦΜ) societies. Today’s visitors benefit from tours, classes and presentations of yesterday’s memories. Plan your trip today!

Back in 2012, shop owner Lindsey Spurlock was working for the State of Georgia, when she serendipitously met and befriended Jessica, Director of Operations for Lizard Thicket’s corporate office. Jessica introduced Lindsey to all things Lizard Thicket, and a love affair began. Lindsey went to work for two separate Lizard Thicket stores so she could learn everything there was to know about the business, and two years later, she became the proud owner of Lizard Thicket Macon. Today, Lindsey’s passion for the brand proves easy to understand, as the store prides itself on selling the latest, most fashion-forward styles and accessories at surprisingly affordable prices. Their stylish clientele can wear their threads with the confidence that their wardrobe is as unique as they are. A limited quantity of each piece is carried in store, so you won’t show up wearing the same dress as someone else. Additionally, fabulous new merchandise arrives almost daily, so the selection is constantly changing. Giving back to the community, the store also gives 10% to the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia the first Wednesday of every month through their ‘We Give Wednesday’ campaign. Everyone at Lizard Thicket Macon encourages ladies to have fun with fashion—because they do too!

Souls by LT Macon is a new local, women’s shoe brand located at The Shoppes at Rivers Crossing. Souls by LT Macon is one of three franchised store locations that were established in 2021 by their parent company, Lizard Thicket Boutique. Owner, Lindsey Spurlock, has been a franchise owner since 2016 and she decided to expand her business here in Macon last year. Before becoming a store owner, Lindsey worked for the State of Georgia and she quickly realized she wanted to be a part of the Lizard Thicket family. She fell in love with the idea of owning her own store so she quit her government job and started working retail for the first time at the age of 29. Lindsey said, “I’ve loved every second since, and there’s no looking back!” Now Lindsey owns 2 store fronts right next door to each other where customers enjoy a full shopping experience. This store has a small-town feel with boho charm where you can find trendy sneakers, comfy sandals, statement heels and classic boots. Cowgirls and fashionistas will be equally dazzled by the store’s variety. They will also be impressed by the team’s community involvement. Their motto, “START where you STAND,” means just that; they put their feet on the ground in the areas of the community that need their help by supportting efforts to stop human trafficking.

What if you could get your sister’s birthday present and the perfect outfit for any occasion in the same place? Haleigh Watson constantly wondered questions like this in college and even made it her senior project to plan a store that had it all. When a great location in a historic 1886 home became available, she turned Southern Charm General Store, a charmingly Southern one-stop-shop, into a reality reaching its eight-year anniversary. Southern Charm General Store can provide one-of-a-kind furniture, lamps, pillows, kitchen utensils, and more. Along with specialty foods, the store also boasts popular candles and local Karli Buxton jewelry along with other unique gifts for everyone on your list. The old home also has a large porch with front-row views of trains passing by regularly—a good way to entertain the kids while you shop! The clothes are especially important to Haleigh, as it is her heart’s desire for mothers to be able to shop with their daughters. Any age from child to adult will find great styles to choose from. And don’t forget about dad! In their men’s clothing section you will find everything from office wear, to threads for a night out and even great fishing and golf clothing with their FREE FLY bamboo line. To support a local store with welcoming staff and everything you might need, title your shopping list “Southern Charm General Store.”

The 1842 Inn boasts a rich history and a grand presence on the edge of Downtown Macon. The breathtaking, Greek Revival mansion was built by former Macon Mayor, John Gresham, in 1842. The antebellum structure received significant upgrades at the turn of the 20th century when the B.F. Adams family took ownership. The mansion opened as a bed and breakfast in 1983 after an adjoining Victorian cottage was relocated to the property to complete the grounds. For more than 20 years, the Ed and Beverly Olson family have enjoyed their time as proprietors of 1842 Inn—son Charles leads operations today. The long-time Inn staff creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Out-of-town guests and local residents, alike, are invited to join a daily hospitality hour including complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar featuring the Inn’s signature drink, the Mint Julep. The Inn’s manicured courtyard, gardens and expansive southern front porch lend the perfect setting for weddings, showers, and receptions. Macon’s only AAA Four Diamond Hotel, its 19 guest rooms, English antiques, paintings and intimate parlors make the 1842 Inn a popular spot for local business and civic group meetings. It is true Southern hospitality at its finest.
