The Usry family’s business roots run deep in Augusta. In the 1940s, Horace Usry—the original “Fat Man”—took over his father’s grocery store and changed the name to Fat Man’s Corner. This eventually became the wellloved Fat Man’s Forest which sold gifts and seasonal decor. Horace’s son, Brad, drove Fat Man’s Forest and Fat Man’s Chow to success in the ‘80s, and this eventually led him to open his first of many restaurants, Cotton Row Café. Brad’s son, Havird, grew up in these kitchens helping his dad and grandmother, Carolyn Usry, a former Augusta City Councilwoman. Havird now serves as a partner, but the hands-on exposure to life in the kitchen fueled Hav’s passions of both business and culinary arts. Featuring soul-good food, Fat Man’s is renowned for its southern fare—including the best squash casserole in town. Located at historic Enterprise Mill, Fat Man’s Mill Café has enjoyed widespread growth and demand. The Usry’s goal is to bring southern hospitality to the world through their lunches, catering, venues and service, and they keep doing just that… one dish at a time.

Manoj Parameswaran has enjoyed more than 20 years progressively sharpening his skills in the kitchen, including time as chef for the Augusta National. A passion for great food, and a developing desire to manage the business behind serving food made the progression from chef to restaurant owner a natural one. While looking for a location to share his Indian heritage, Manoj realized the Evans area was ready for more ethnic flavors, and pursued the path to own his own place. Standing by him through all of his success is his wife, Sujitha Manoj and their children, Nayan and Neha. Rather than get mired down in a formal setting, Manoj decided to establish something more accessible and fast-casual, and the idea of popular Indian street food items fit the bill. The restaurant offers an inviting atmosphere where diners can enjoy a range of street foods, such as dosa, butter chicken, garlicky cauliflower and kulcha. Manoj wants customers to enjoy a quality experience so he uses only the best ingredients, often locally sourced. With convenience in mind, the Namaste Indian Street Food social media and website offers diners the chance to see the menu, a selection of signature dishes and specials, as well as a platform for online ordering.

The restaurant, Noble Jones, is understated, elegant, welcoming and very Southern. At its helm is J.D. Wier, who brings his culinary vision to life by providing a vibrant menu of seasonal dishes. The name of the restaurant is a nod to an English carpenter from Herefordshire who resided in Georgia, commanded Georgia’s Northern Company of Marines, became a Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives and eventually played a leading role during the Revolutionary War. The menu reflects J.D.’s travel experiences throughout the Southeast. Therefore, local palates will be particularly thrilled with many of his recipes, including his Catfish Po’ boy, Fried Pickled Okra, Robust Brisket or Smoked Fried Chicken. “Back home in Illinois, we did a lot of life in coffee shops. It’s where we built relationships,” said Heather Needles, who co-owns Rooted Coffeehouse with her daughter, Ali Kocher. “When we moved here almost five years ago, we were missing that aspect of daily life. We also saw that we were living in an ever-changing and diverse community that was used to doing daily life independently. That became the catalyst for opening Rooted. There is a desire to deliver a quality product and also a comfortable space for community, fellowship, and doing life alongside others.” Rooted Coffeehouse, located in the Market at Riverwood, opened its doors in February 2018. A second location will open in the summer of 2022 in Harlem. The mother and daughter duo said the name came from uprooting their families from familiar small town rural Illinois and moving to Evans, Georgia. It was their new home and they were putting down “roots” that would grow as they became established in a new community, experienced new adventures in the Peach State, and made memories as a family. Heather is a mother to six children, three who still live at home, while Ali has her own family with a husband and infant daughter.

The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area is the oldest, continuously used industrial hydropower canal in the United States. It was constructed in 1845 for three purposes: hydropower, drinking water for the city, and boat transportation. The canal is not only important regionally, but also nationally. The Canal helped initiate the Industrial Revolution in the South by powering textile mills as early as 1848. During the Civil War, it powered the Confederate Powderworks Mill. By the end of the 19th century, Augusta’s population had doubled, mainly as a result of over 12 mills operating on the canal, providing jobs for thousands of people. Sadly, by the mid-20th century the canal became neglected and polluted. A grass roots movement led to creation of the Canal Authority in 1989, and in 1996, the canal was designated a National Heritage Area by Congress. Now we protect over 2,000 acres of land that provide over 25 miles of land and water trails for public use, and a home to hundreds of freshwater plants and animals. Visit the Augusta Canal Discovery Center and take a Petersburg Boat Tour to learn more about how a city used its waterways to reinvent itself and define its destiny.

Sól uses a highly specialized halogenerator to grind pharmaceutical-grade salt which is dry-aerosolized and then pumped into the air of the “cave.” The anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of the salt make it excellent therapy for people with respiratory and skin issues. It is also beneficial for people experiencing depression, PTSD, anxiety and more. Halotherapy has been used for over 150 years with its roots in ancient European salt mines. Sól also offers massage and esthetician services along with a full spectrum infrared sauna and an amethyst biomat to melt those aches and pains away! Lawn Letters is here to help you celebrate any occasion with their larger-than-life signs. The signs appear in the middle of the night so when you wake up, poof! Surprise! Lawn Letters can be displayed in any grassy location for you and your loved ones to enjoy. It started as a way to celebrate special occasions for friends and family. It was so much fun that when Angela VanGroll and her family moved to Augusta, she turned it into a business. It’s a pretty simple concept: the client lets Angela know what they want the sign to celebrate—graduation, birthdays, babies, pretty much anything—and her team puts it all together. The next part is proprietary. All you need to know is that the signs appear, stay put for a day, then disappear once more, as if by magic. It’s a stealthy operation. Angela and her crew have enormous amounts of fun delivering surprises and smiles all over the community. If you want to celebrate it, Lawn Letters can make it happen. Leslie Kavanagh is an entrepreneur at heart. Following in her dad’s footsteps, Leslie ventured into business in the field of personal care with extraordinary results—certainly not what she expected when she graduated with a biology degree 20+ years ago. Ultimately, biology wasn’t as appealing as cosmetology, so Leslie retrained. In 2011, she learned about sugaring, an ancient Egyptian hair removal technique that is kinder to the body than waxing. And in 2013, Leslie seized the opportunity to bring the sugaring technique to the Augusta area. After great success, Leslie opened her own studio in 2019—Sugar & Comb. Sugar & Comb is a sugaring studio and hair salon. Sugaring is a unique technique for hair removal; there are no strips, no burning, no bacteria and less pain than traditional waxing. The sugaring hair removal process is suitable for people with even the most sensitive skin. As a certified Sugaring Educator, Leslie can now share her expertise by training and certifying other cosmetologists locally. Sugar & Comb truly takes personal care to a sweeter level!

The Partridge Inn is steeped in history, and it stands as one of Augusta’s most beloved landmarks. Perched on the Hill in the peaceful, picturesque Summerville neighborhood, it was first built in 1836. The original building has been visited by heads of state, business luminaries and celebrities for over a century. The Partridge Inn had an extensive yet careful restoration in 2021-22 to create a luxury retreat. Moments from the shopping, dining and attractions of downtown, the hotel offers an upscale respite from the bustle of everyday life. The Partridge Inn exemplifies Southern hospitality—guests are welcomed with a spectacular display of historic architecture, classic décor, and excellent customer service. The Inn features state-of-the-art amenities that blend beautifully in guest suites, as well as the most incredible views of Augusta. These are best seen from 8595’s and 6 South’s (the hotel’s new restaurants) verandahs. Making the Partridge Inn stand out is its team of seasoned professionals who function together as the heart of the Inn, creating a convivial environment where lasting memories are made.

For over 30 years, Powell & Associates, Inc. has been on the forefront of innovation and service for the CSRA in real estate. The company began in 1992 with its founder Marcene Powell in Lincolnton, GA. Not only did she open the first real estate firm there, but it was also the first woman-owned business. This broke all preconceived notions of what women could do. She made a profound impact on one girl specifically, her daughter Nancy. Nancy went to work for the family brokerage in 1999. In 2010, Nancy returned to college earning a degree from Augusta University. While continuing in real estate, she also worked in politics for several years, running the campaigns of US Congressmen and US Senators. In 2015, she returned full-time to real estate and decided to expand into the Augusta/Aiken Market. She easily fell back into an industry that she loved, helping fulfill people’s dreams through homeownership. In 2020, Nancy became the owner/ broker of her mother’s company, Powell & Associates, Inc. and relocated the main office to Downtown Augusta. For residential, commercial, land or lakefront properties in the CSRA give Powell & Associates a call!
