Brian is native of Augusta who nurtures a long abiding love affair with his hometown. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, his love for local was born of his interactions with the arts community through music. He is a graduate of John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School and Augusta University, and a longstanding advocate for the local music community.

The Usry family’s business roots run deep in Augusta. In the 1940s, Horace Usry—the original “Fat Man”—took over his father’s grocery store and changed the name to Fat Man’s Corner. This eventually became the wellloved Fat Man’s Forest which sold gifts and seasonal decor. Horace’s son, Brad, drove Fat Man’s Forest and Fat Man’s Chow to success in the ‘80s, and this eventually led him to open his first of many restaurants, Cotton Row Café. Brad’s son, Havird, grew up in these kitchens helping his dad and grandmother, Carolyn Usry, a former Augusta City Councilwoman. Havird now serves as a partner, but the hands-on exposure to life in the kitchen fueled Hav’s passions of both business and culinary arts. When they went on their second date at Inner Bean Café, Fiona and Shane Lysse never suspected it would one day belong to them. Belgian chocolate is among the finest chocolate in the world, and Augusta is lucky to have had its own artisan, Belgian chocolatier at La Bonbonnière. The shop was opened in 2005 and is owned by the wonderful Marie-Hélène, affectionately known as Bébette. As a graduate of the Chocolate Academy in Wieze, Belgium, Bébette has worked for years to perfect her craft. She continues to improve on her knowledge and techniques in both Belgium and the U.S. In 2021, La Bonbonnière became home to a European-style bakery which also serves warm beverages in a cozy cafe setting. For true chocolate lovers, La Bonbonnière offers a haven and wonderland rolled into one. With seasonal items and flavors, the chocolate shop never ceases to delight. Be sure to check out the namesake chocolate “bonbonnières,” or boxes, which are intricately designed chocolate boxes that can hold individual pieces of chocolate. Manoj Parameswaran has enjoyed more than 20 years progressively sharpening his skills in the kitchen, including time as chef for the Augusta National. A passion for great food, and a developing desire to manage the business behind serving food made the progression from chef to restaurant owner a natural one. “Back home in Illinois, we did a lot of life in coffee shops. It’s where we built relationships,” said Heather Needles, who co-owns Rooted Coffeehouse with her daughter, Ali Kocher. “When we moved here almost five years ago, we were missing that aspect of daily life. We also saw that we were living in an ever-changing and diverse community that was used to doing daily life independently. That became the catalyst for opening Rooted. There is a desire to deliver a quality product and also a comfortable space for community, fellowship, and doing life alongside others.” Rooted Coffeehouse, located in the Market at Riverwood, opened its doors in February 2018. A second location will open in the summer of 2022 in Harlem. The mother and daughter duo said the name came from uprooting their families from familiar small town rural Illinois and moving to Evans, Georgia. It was their new home and they were putting down “roots” that would grow as they became established in a new community, experienced new adventures in the Peach State, and made memories as a family. Heather is a mother to six children, three who still live at home, while Ali has her own family with a husband and infant daughter.

The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area is the oldest, continuously used industrial hydropower canal in the United States. It was constructed in 1845 for three purposes: hydropower, drinking water for the city, and boat transportation. The canal is not only important regionally, but also nationally. The Canal helped initiate the Industrial Revolution in the South by powering textile mills as early as 1848. During the Civil War, it powered the Confederate Powderworks Mill. By the end of the 19th century, Augusta’s population had doubled, mainly as a result of over 12 mills operating on the canal, providing jobs for thousands of people. Sadly, by the mid-20th century the canal became neglected and polluted. A grass roots movement led to creation of the Canal Authority in 1989, and in 1996, the canal was designated a National Heritage Area by Congress. Now we protect over 2,000 acres of land that provide over 25 miles of land and water trails for public use, and a home to hundreds of freshwater plants and animals. Visit the Augusta Canal Discovery Center and take a Petersburg Boat Tour to learn more about how a city used its waterways to reinvent itself and define its destiny.

Lucy Craft Laney (1854-1933) was born in Macon, Georgia, and she grew up to be one of the nation’s greatest educators. She earned her degree at Atlanta University and began teaching in Macon soon after. She moved to Augusta, and it was here that she made her greatest contribution toward reforming education for African Americans by opening the first school in town dedicated exclusively to educating Black boys and girls. Lucy Craft Laney’s home was established as a museum in 1991. It promotes her extraordinary legacy, as well as the numerous Black leaders from Augusta who have made substantial contributions to the community and world. A cornerstone for the cultural and historical preservation of African American history in the Augusta area, the Museum explores local history through special tours, programs, annual events and outdoor Heritage Tours. Krystina Carrino started out in Louisville, Georgia as the owner of a full service salon.
