January 2017

Restoring Hope in the God of Second Chances! We are the risk takers, the change makers, the Adventurers of life! Welcome to 2017! By now you should know we are on a great adventure as Christians. This means we do not shy away from challenges, we do not hunker down in fear or play the blame game. We are called, we choose, and we become Christians. This means we are called away from the boredom, routines and consumer-driven ideals that dominate most people’s lives. We are called to confront the problems in life head-on by rolling up our sleeves rather than turning up our noses. We gather as a church because we choose what is right not what is easy, we choose to live out of our convictions not out of convenience, and we choose to draw the best not the worst out of ourselves and others. Are you part of a community like that? We are Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and we have a bold, some say impossible, vision to restore human dignity to this world by living, loving and sharing the power of Jesus wherever we are. We are told to look ahead to each new day with optimism in what we can accomplish. In God’s Word, we see God described as a great artist, always creating, always revealing more of the world than we knew possible. He is always doing a new thing and invites us to join Him. “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19 He says His mercies are new and fresh every morning. He says His grace is sufficient for this day. We can see that nothing is stale and nothing is stagnant in God’s Kingdom. He gave fresh manna daily for the people on their journey in the wilderness. God wants us to expect great things and then look for them. In the New Year, I want us to press on toward the high calling in Christ Jesus, not to be just a church on the hill, but THE beacon of hope and light for seekers and saints alike. So I truly look forward to working with you, worshiping with you and in general celebrating life with you on this great adventure that lies before us in 2017! Welcome Aboard!

Blessings,

News from the Preschool We are anxious to get started to a fabulous 2017! After a very busy December, January is “Let It Snow month in our three year old class. We focus on winter books and fun, wintery activities. Our four year old class is moving right along in their quest to master the alphabet while focusing on the letters L, M, N, and O, and taking a field trip to the Parkersburg/Wood County Library. Enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year begins January 30 for current Mt. Pleasant Preschool families, and February 6 for all others. Classes usually fill the first day. Names will be taken for waiting lists. For more information, you may contact us at (304) 489-3100, or at mtpleasantpreschool@gmail.com During the month of December, in lieu of gifts to us, we asked for donations to the Sak Pak Program and the MPUMC Food Pantry. We collected approximately 270 items, and monetary donations! THANK YOU to our wonderful preschool families for supporting these programs that are near and dear to our hearts. We truly have the most generous families! They are not only generous with donations, but also with their time! Special thanks to Sherry Hinton for helping us with the Rada Fundraiser! It was a great success! Thank you to those who took the time to come to our Christmas program and support our wonderful children! Always a thank you to Linda Bargeloh and Roger Hodges for everything they do for the preschool! SAK PAK

THRIVE STUDENT MINISTRY

THRIVE Activities – January THRIVE Student Ministries had a busy and fun month of December! We want to thank the congregation for all of their support and encouragement! Thank you for coming to our Sunday lunch and supporting us with your fellowship and donations toward our ministry! In January, we have a group of 30 students and parents that will be traveling to the Charleston Civic Center to enjoy contemporary Christian music with the WinterJam tour! It will be a night of worship and inspiration. Please pray for our trip and for God’s presence to be made known with us all so that we will feel even closer to Him. Please pray for our friends that we are taking that the concert and the fellowship will lead them closer to Christ and to our ministry as well! Beginning January 8, our Sunday gatherings will resume. We will begin that evening with a leadership meeting at 5:30pm. Any student, parent, or adult of the church that would like to offer support for the direction of the ministry may join us to discuss the next few months of activities and curriculum. At 6:30, we will begin our youth study and worship time. We will begin the SHINE curriculum. We will be learning how to relationally share the message of the gospel. In the busyness of life—school, fun, friends, sports and more—our students sometimes lose sight of the truth that they have the message of hope and life that others urgently need. Yet when you stop and really think about it, sharing Jesus’ message with others is the most impacting thing they will ever do with their lives. Join us for this 6 week series!!! Each Sunday evening, 6:30 -8:00pm. We start every Sunday evening with dinner and fellowship for students!

Little Kanawha District Youth WINTER RETREAT

January 27-29

“Alice in Wonderland Biblical Parallels” Every winter the district holds a winter retreat for students 6th -12th grades at the Crossroads Camp on Rt 2. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect or reconnect with other area Christian students as well as form closer relationships with our own youth students. A retreat allows students to step away from our busy schedules and refocus on God with the support of others who are in the same stage of life. We encourage our THRIVE students to participate in this wonderful opportunity with one another!! You can get registration forms from Amanda Eagle or from our church office. The cost is $55. Scholarships through THRIVE student ministries are available if needed.

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Trustees Happy New Year and Merry Christmas!!! It is still Christmas. Many have removed the lights and started to put away the decorations, but it is still Christmas. What about the 12 days of Christmas and what about epiphany. The Feast of the Epiphany of Jesus Christ is one of the oldest Christian feasts, though, throughout the centuries, it has celebrated a variety of things. Epiphany comes from the Greek verb meaning “to reveal,” and all of the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are revelations of Christ to man. This year, Epiphany occurs on January 6, the twelfth day of Christmas. As a child, our mom had us put the baby Jesus in the manger of the Nativity set on Christmas Day. But, the Wise men were far away on the other side of the room. Every day we would move them closer and on the twelfth day, we would place them at the Nativity scene. Please remember, Christmas is just the beginning. 2016 was a great year. A number of projects were completed due to many very generous members of our Church. The kitchen makeover was completed. A new projector was installed. Temporary showers were built for the Tampa mission team. The showers are stored away and can be reassembled again anywhere or any time. The landscape of the church was updated, the driveway to the food pantry was redone with new aggregate, drainage along the sidewalk was installed and the parking lot was sealed and striped. New night lights for the stain glass window were installed and the library was revamped with a temporary wall with pocket doors for some reason. New carpet was installed in the offices and conference room, along with new furniture. Etc. Thank you very much. 2017 will be another great year. The sanctuary and the main church building will be 20 years old. The trustees have a number of projects that will be announced in the next couple of months. Keep your sleeves rolled up and be ready for the next church wide service day. The trustees are still working on the parsonage. New lighting has been installed in the hallway, sitting room, entryway and dining room. Blinds for the dining room and sitting room should be hung sometime this month. New sliding doors are still needed for the sunroom and we are replacing the lawnmower. The date for Eagle Scout deck project will be announced when weather permits. All in all, the cost of these improvements will be about $16,000. Donations can be earmarked for the Building Fund/Parsonage. Thank you for your giving. Thank you for your support. Please contact one of the trustees with any concerns, problems or issues. And you are always welcome to any of the trustee’s meetings. We usually meet @ 7pm the on the first Monday of the Month. This month we are meeting on January 30. The Trustees
