Introducing the book

Ask: How do you think the boy felt about his train trip? Can you relate to this feeling? Discuss as a whole group.

Have students take turns retelling each other the main events from the recount. Encourage them to speak clearly and with expression.

Have students write a recount about a day out to a special event (real or imagined). Provide the students with a template detailing the structure and elements of a recount.

Activate students’ prior knowledge. Ask: Have you ever been to a baseball game? Invite students to share their personal stories.

Have students read chapter 2 independently.

Ask: What do you know about going to a big sporting event, such as a baseball game? How do you get there? What do you do there? Have students turn and talk about this with a partner. Discuss as a whole group.

Ask: Why did the boy and his dad have to line up? Why did they have to search for their seats? How did they buy their hot dogs?

Provide each student with a copy of We Got Tickets! Say: This book is about a boy and his dad who attend a baseball game. Have students browse through the book.

Final reading session

Exploring vocabulary Ask: What words or phrases might be in this book? Have students work with a partner, then share with the group. List the words on a chart and invite students to make suggestions about what each word means. Where appropriate, have the students add a drawing (for example, a picture or a symbol) to the words on the chart to make the meaning clear. Discuss each word as you list them on the chart. If necessary, introduce the content vocabulary and add these words to the list.

Introducing the reading strategy Say: It’s important be able to retell, in order, the events that happened in a recount. This shows you understand what you have read. Have students talk to a partner about things they do to help them remember the events they have read about.

Have students turn and talk to a partner about their ideas.

Have students read chapter 3 and the conclusion independently. Say: As you read, think about the order of the events as they happen.

Bringing it all together Ask: What have you learned about having a day out at the baseball?

Have students turn and talk with a partner. Invite students to share their knowledge and create a group chart by recording their responses.

Say: There were so many people at the stadium watching baseball.

Why do people like going to the ballgame? What things make it possible for all of these people to enjoy watching the game? Think about the people who work at the stadium. Discuss as a whole group.

Have pairs of students brainstorm a list of “baseball words” in a set time limit of five minutes. Invite students to share their lists. Record any nouns they read out onto a chart like the one below: Person

Say: Nouns are words that label a person, a place, or a thing. What other nouns could we add to this list? Record students’ responses on the chart.

Visual literacy Ask: What information is needed on a ticket to a baseball game?

Record students’ ideas on a chart (such as the date, time, seat number, and barcode, which teams are playing, and where the game is on). Have students design and make a ticket to an imaginary baseball game. Remind them to include all of the necessary information on their ticket.

Students could complete the Blackline Master about recounting the main events from the book.

Reflecting on the reading strategy

Have students turn to pages 4 and 5 and read the introduction independently. Ask: Would you be excited if you got baseball tickets? Why or why not?

With a partner, have students talk about what they do to help them remember what happened in a book. Ask: How do you know which things are important to remember in a recount, and which things are just small details? Invite pairs to share their ideas.

Have students read chapter 1 independently. Say: As you read, remember to think about what has happened so far in the recount.

This can help you to understand the text better.

Ask: Is it important to be able to retell the main events that happened in a book? Why? Discuss as a whole group.
