Banchory Day Centre news from Cathy Gedik
10
The Banchory Day Centre provides a social opportunity for those living independently within the community, who, for whatever reason, find themselves more isolated than they would like. While the Forget-Me-Not Club is a wonderful gathering place for those with dementia, there are fewer opportunities for those who cope well in their own environment but find that their ability to get out and about and meet up with friends has become limited.
We are a friendly welcoming group, who laugh a lot. Members and volunteers simply enjoy each other’s company, the chance to chat and have a cup of tea or coffee. New members are made very welcome and often find they already know others who attend.
and companionship again.
Covid restrictions have left many, particularly the elderly, having to cope with varying degrees of social isolation. The Day Centre offers a weekly opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new friends and enjoy the buzz of conversation
Some members drive themselves to join us, others are dropped off by relatives and a few are pre-booked by the Day Centre on the Banchory A2B bus for both pick up and return home. Places on the bus are however limited and can’t be guaranteed.
Until we return to Dalvenie, where we plan to restart our full day program, we are hosting coffee mornings for members on Thursday mornings from 10am until 12 noon.
Covid and a two-year gap in activity have seen our numbers understandably decline. We now have spaces for new members. If you would enjoy geng together with others or, if you know of someone whom you think would benefit from the boost of social interaction, please contact either our secretary, Denise Roberts, on 07854 223810 or chairperson Cathy Gedik on 01330 824180 to find out more.
The Banchory Day Centre which met previously at Dalvenie Gardens, has restarted and is based temporarily in the East Church Hall.
We look forward to hearing from anyone who would enjoy expanding their friendship group.

Open on Wednesday and Saturday from 9am-2pm.
As the Scosh growing season is short, many of the products are from UK and Europe however there is locally grown when available. This year there are local berries from Castleton Farm and Barra Castle in Old Meldrum. The Oakwood Market Garden in Kincardine O’Neil supplies a wide range of vegetables which are grown without chemicals.
There is also a range of preserves from Shirley, Richie and the in-house team who make jam and chutney from excess fruit. With eggs from Katy in Torphins there is now a good range of local producers.

If you go down Posties Walk on Wednesday and Saturday you will find a pop-up grocer shop. Run by the Number One – Community Matters team you can buy fresh fruit and vegetable and locally produced food produce.
While running the COVID resilience hub the team provided fresh food to people who were shielding and as the vegetables were such good quality it was suggested that they continue using Turriff's Fruit & Veg wholesaler. Produce is fresh from the Glasgow market, delivered twice a week at 7am.
The shop is along Postie Walk, off the High Street, behind the Home Store.

Banchory Community Council has raised concern about the number of unidentified “lost” dogs being found in and around the town over the summer months and issued a gentle reminder that under the Control of Dogs Order 1992 your dog must wear a collar and tag with your name and address on it outwith your property, even if it has been micro-chipped. Amongst other things, it helps adventurous dogs get reunited quickly with their owners.

Our busiest time is still the Tuesday morning session where much coffee drinking and pung right of the world is done. Attendance on Thursdays and Saturdays is also increasing, and for the summer we have expanded Saturday openings to every week. We also have a not-too-serious Bridge playing session on Wednesday afternoons and welcome new members, either those who are already a player or willing to self-learn with help.
Looking to our future, it's important to keep the general membership growing and to bring in new ideas and enthusiasm. If you're interested in joining, and especially if you have ideas of your own which you'd like to bring along, please contact us – what we do is only limited by your own imagination and interests.

With its own separate premises finished in February 2020 below the Banchory Legion's ballroom area, the Shed offers men of any age who have time on their hands the opportunity to meet up with peers, socialise and also use the well-equipped workshop for projects large and small. The Shed is definitely fulfilling the role envisaged of providing Banchory and the surrounding district with a new place for locals to meet.
Banchory Men's Shed has gone from strength to strength after reopening in February 2021 and the grand opening by Princess Anne last September. A steady flow of new members has boosted the Shed to around 60 members and the Shed has also expanded its opening to three mornings a week from the original single Tuesday morning.

Trigger Points: When they are very tight, some of the muscles around the hip and pelvis actually refer pain down the leg in a very similar pattern to a disc lesion. This phenomenon is called a trigger point. We have lost count of how many patients we see who are convinced they have a disc problem, for us only to pinpoint a muscle in their hip and re-create their pain. Fortunately trigger points are much easier to deal with than disc problems!
Shooting pain can also occur if you are one of the 15% of people that have the sciatic nerve travelling through the piriformis!
You’ve all heard of
Pain in this area can be sharp or dull, or in some cases can feel more like pins and needles or numbness. Although the diagnosis of sciatica is very common, receiving an official name for your condition doesn’t necessarily make the pain any better!
If you’ve ever had pain in your lower back, buttock or leg, then you might have assumed that you have sciatica. What exactly is sciatica? The definition of sciatica is pain anywhere along the course of the sciatic nerve (basically nearly everywhere from your hip to your toes!).
Potential Causes of “Sciatica”:
SI Syndrome: The SI joints are the larger joints that connect your spine to your pelvis. Some studies say between 15% and 30% of low back pain sufferers have dysfunction of these joints. SI syndrome is usually caused by inactivity and poor posture but can also be aggravated by injury or pregnancy. Pain can be anywhere from the lower back to the back of the leg, so diagnosis requires a complete physical examination.
Piriformis Syndrome: The sciatic nerve runs past the piriformis muscle (located around your hip/buttock). The sciatic nerve can become irritated when the piriformis is very tight and stiff (very common with prolonged sing!) resulting in pain around the hip or into the thigh.
The truth is that pain in this area can be caused by many different things. Figuring out the exact cause of sciatica can be challenging but this is essential to begin healing.
Disc Lesions: You’ve all heard of a “slipped disc”. The truth is the disc doesn’t really slip anywhere – what usually happens is part of the disc tears and the inside of the disc bulges out. If the bulge is large enough it can push on a spinal nerve, causing sharp and shooting pain and pins and needles down the leg. Luckily this is a less common condition but extremely painful when it does happen.
ASciaticaPainintheButt?!
Get in touch with our friendly team by emailing hello@banchoryspinalhealth. co.uk or calling 01330 824040!
Our team are experts in these types of conditions and will only commence a treatment plan after a full examination and diagnosis has been made.
There are so many potential causes of sciatica, it seems unfair to group all of them under one name. Whether you have been diagnosed with sciatica or not, treatment and recovery will vary depending on the true cause, how long the problem has been going on, and the age, lifestyle, and health of the person with the issue. The thought of addressing these factors on your own can be a daunting prospect! A pain in the butt is certainly no joke if you are the one who is suffering with it.
If any of the above sounds familiar, then we have a solution for you; an enormous 50% off a New Patient Experience with us at our custom designed clinic in Banchory (saving of £55!).

People wanted a greengrocer in the village, so we host a pop-up greengrocer every Wednesday and Saturday. We try to sell local produce as much as possible. At present we sell produce from Oakwood Market Garden, Katy’s Eggs, Richie Chilli Sauce, local honey and Shirley’s Jam and more. There are also our own products from the excess fruit and vegetables such as chutney, jam and dehydrated herbs and fruit. Any profit from the shop goes towards paying the rent.

We are often asked “what is Number One” and we always reply, “whatever you want it to be”.
Number One – Community Matters is a Banchory & District Initiative which was formed 6 years ago in Unit 1 Scott Skinner Square, hence the name. Originally the facility was home to a community cafe and spaces for meetings and workshops. With the end of the lease last year we moved to Unit 7, round the corner in Postie Walk, leaving our old premises for another BDI project, Studio 1.
We believe that Community Matters so we have listened to what people want and have provided a space for anyone to use. At the moment we have a number of groups already using the space.
People wanted to reduce food waste so we work with Deeside Climate Action Network (DCAN) to highlight the issue of food waste which produces as much CO2 than cars. A team of volunteers collects excess produce from three supermarkets and give it away in the Community Fridge every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday morning from 9.30am. Anyone can take the free food, otherwise it would go to landfill. While
