Welcome to Issue 28 of The Fountain I HAVE A NEW EMAIL ADDRESS! It’s only taken me seven years (yes, that’s how long we’ve had a Fountain) to finally ditch Yahoo and acquire something vaguely resembling a business email address. Been a bit busy. You can still reach me on the Yahoo address, but if you can add myriadprocat@outlook.com to your contacts instead, all good. Remember that community information is FREE to include in these pages, so if you have any news for the Summer edition (out early June), tell me about it by May 1st if you can. Enjoy!

Riding out the Storm(s) While we all hope there won’t be further storms this year, and perhaps you would all prefer to move on, it is worth reflecting on past events. Where Arwen could be described as unprecedented in recent memory (except for those around in 1953), Malik and Corrie arrived as many communities were only just beginning their resilience planning, and strategies that were under consideration quickly became operational plans. Where the developing resilience groups had yet to formalise working partnerships with other community groups, members of the resilience groups turned their strategies into actions. With power out in all villages surrounding Aboyne from Saturday, Aboyne lost power late Sunday evening, or early Monday morning (for those already fast asleep). In the morning, some may have thought the Community Centre was the place to go for refuge and support, it was in fact the Scout Hut; not that there was time to share this prior to Malik and Corrie arriving, but the Scout Hut crew had begun their preparations following Storm Frank and had the foundations for implementing a strong resilience response. Bernie Cassie and family and the Paper Girls established a hub, Mike Brown wired up their generator and the building had power. With gas fired stoves set up, hot water was available and then, once cooked, a warm soup. With additional food arriving care of Aberdeenshire Council, via a detour to the swimming pool, meals were available and were delivered by Shauna

A reflection on recent events by Councillor Paul Gibb
Wright and a small team of volunteers to those unable to leave their homes. Thus far this sounds like it was a pretty straight-forward exercise, but it wasn’t. It required a considerable effort through coordination with their personal contacts to seek help, overcoming frustrations with the comms with external agencies, understanding who needed support and where they were, whilst managing their personal situations as everyone including the volunteers had family they needed to care for. The resilience group based in the Scout Hut put in an exhausting 12hour shift, not including the clear-up the following day. At time of writing it cannot be said how many visitors there were to the hub, or recipients of hot meals from a welcome face to see if they were OK, but that so many were is down to the efforts of a very small group, fewer than 10 people, to whom we owe our thanks.

Storming effort (cont) Working in parallel to the group in the Scout Hut, Ali and Nicola Tong responded to the needs of residents in Praesmohr House. Having had a generator from Michael Bruce wired in for a while, Ali and Nicola provided lunches and dinners, courtesy of his portable BBQ. It should also be noted that businesses opened where they could and provided support, gas, food etc and many residents took time to check on their neighbours, providing camping stoves and hot water to those who needed them. While the community will continue to develop its resilience strategies, building on what has been learnt, it will be a while before these are formalised and shared with every resident. There will be opportunity for all communities to review recent events and responses at a forum to be held by the Marr Area Partnership; it will be good to learn what worked in neighbouring communities and build these strategies into local plans where appropriate. Meanwhile, and as food for thought, we do need more volunteers; any future event would be better responded to where the resource on the ground was greater in numbers and thus capacity to respond to challenging and ever changing needs, even if only for a few hours, help in any form would be greatly appreciated. If you think you might be able to help, please contact the Community Council middeesidecommunitycouncil@gmail.com Here’s hoping we are not soon faced with another storm, and that we have time needed to improve our resilience.
Councillor Paul Gibb Councillor for Aboyne, Upper Deeside & Donside (Ward 15) cllr.p.gibb@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
This note can not be concluded without also saying thanks to the SSEN engineers and their corporate team, who again responded in large numbers coming from all across the UK to help us get back on power, and this work goes on today and will continue to do so for many months. Scosh Water, when the power to the pump that feeds the water tanks below Courthill Wood was out and the pressure dropped and the water ran out in Aboyne, had a line of tankers [refilling the tanks] which remained on stand-by until they were no longer required. The telecoms companies are also out, fixing lines and ensuring connections are restored. We will continue to see them all in and around the village for some time. Perhaps a final word goes to the Estates who are clearing the trees and helping, with Council staff and contractors, to clear the roads; this is a significant piece of work and some recreational paths may not be opened for a while as priorities will be on ensuring roads are safe and that weakened trees will not yet fall and cause damage or worse.

BOULERS BOUNCE BACK!
The Boulers o’Birse continue to enjoy playing Petanque on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings outside the church at Finzean – such a scenic environment for the game. As soon as Covid regulations allowed, the club members’ enthusiasm for the sport meant most have returned, along with some new faces who have quickly taken up play. Of course, there’s always room and time for more folks to try the sport if a beginner and rekindle old skills if experienced. A friendly and welcoming club, do stop and meet us if you are passing, or contact info.boulersobirse@gmail.com for full details. Age is no barrier, we range from primary school age to well beyond retirement years! Come and see if you’d like to be a Bouler o’Birse too.

Mid Deeside Community First Responders (MDCFR) are looking for new members. Back in March 2020, all CFRs were stood down because of Covid-19. When the Scosh Ambulance Service (SAS) asked us to consider returning to duty in August 2020, our group was diminished by almost two-thirds and, two years on, the group numbers remain very low. Alongside this, the Ambulance Service is as stretched as ever, and needs our help. Community First Responders (CFRs) book on for duty when they are available and are called by Ambulance Control to attend some local emergencies if an ambulance cannot get to the patient as quickly as your local CFR can. We cover from Banchory to Ballater along Deeside, including Tarland, Logie Coldstone, Lumphanan and Torphins, and everywhere in between. Initial training is a four-day course often held over two weekends which is run by the Scosh Ambulance Service. It includes instruction in dealing with cardiac arrest (we carry a defibrillator), administration of oxygen, and how to assess a patient and keep them stable according to their needs until the ambulance arrives. No previous medical experience is necessary – you should be fit, over 18, able to drive, have access to a vehicle when on call and have an understanding of the professionalism required in dealing with the public at such medically sensitive times. Appropriate PPE is supplied by SAS according to Covid-19 regulations. After this training, you will join our group monthly training nights to help keep our skills up to date. Being a CFR is both challenging and rewarding, so if you would like to know more about this valuable community service, please email tmdcfr@gmail.com, or call Linda on 07876 102026 to find out more, and/or come along to one of our training sessions.

The World According to
GEVA BLACKETT | Cllr Ward 15
We have been through awful times over the past two years and Storm Arwen was most certainly an event none of us needed. Since then we have been hit by two more storms; each wreaking havoc, bringing down many lovely old trees and plunging us into darkness again. Community resilience is uppermost in many minds, as one of your councillors I am more than happy to be part of helping build that. Resilience also means making sure people can be warm in adverse conditions like the storms. Understanding the need to cut our carbon emissions, I have expressed concern that we are hurtling down a path totally dependent on electricity – until we have a resilient power supply, we should be very careful about what we are doing. With rising costs of everything from food to fuel, many families will be struggling to keep warm and to eat. I am not comfortable with that situation. People need a back-up heat source, and I fear we have already gone down a path of depriving many of that – I hope it’s not too late and am making my views known, I hope to some effect. Resilience also means being able to pick up the phone and call for help if someone is ill or there is a fire. With BT going digital soon, that will not be possible if the power goes out. I have taken this up with our MP Andrew Bowie. If you are worried about how you would manage with no landline and no power, you can email him at andrew.bowie.mp@parliament.uk. Much of our economy depends on tourism and I have had an interesting conversation with Michael Foy at Aboyne
Academy. We need to understand what young people want from a career in hospitality and young people need to understand what ‘business’ wants from them – there are exciting prospects to be had if you are prepared to work hard. Royal Deeside has some of the finest produce within reach, we now need to find a way to make sure our cafes and restaurants have the staff they need. Finally, Cllr Paul Gibb has indicated he will not be standing at the council elections in May. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Paul for all the work he has done for the Ward and for all the help and support he has given me personally. He is a man of integrity and incredibly hardworking. I for one will miss him (but have his home phone number and if I am re-elected, won’t be shy to ask for help or advice if needed – be warned Paul!!!) My mobile number, if you need me, is 07876 475269 and my email is cllr.g.blackett@aberdeenshire.gov.uk – or find me on my Council Facebook page
News from your Co-op store by Gemma Massie, Aboyne Member pioneer In November I became the Member Pioneer for the Aboyne area. I look forward to working with our local causes and within the wider community. The store’s book sale has been a huge success! In between raising money for SAMH, we are going to support local groups in our village. We started off with Aboyne Primary Parent Council and raised a fantastic £201.83!! FOODSHARE PARTNERS We currently have three food share partners, Aboyne After-School Club, Aboyne Primary School and Cromar Food. It’s great to see the community make use of what otherwise would get sent back to depot. In store we recently supported Aboyne Primary School with a donation of items that would help their nurture group and their community resources hub. What a roller coaster this winter was for the Everything Electronic Youth Group. Start in hall, stop no power (Arwen), back in hall, on-line (Omicron), in hall, no power (Malik and Corrie). it could not have been more disruptive! Despite everything some great news - their coders were yet again above average in the nationwide Bebras Coding Challenge; Millie Pole was an International CoderDojo Champion for her age group; and her brother Harvey’s film “Save the Mussels” won a third award as the overall winner of the “Climate Challenge : 1.5 Degree Films”. As Millie was the voice of “Mr. Mussel” she joined him for the film award ceremony. (See cover photo.) The other good news is we have our on-line Club up and running on Thursday nights for those who cannot get to us physically. It has a nickname - “The Thursday Night Pizza Club” as we bring the coding and they code while enjoying their tea-time pizzas!

Please help us buy equipment and provide workshops by choosing us as your Co-op charity. We have members from Banchory to Alford, Aboyne to Logie. In Alford are our two remotest members, apart from one near Stonehaven, but we have been allocated as one of Alford’s Co-op Charities rather than Aboyne, where we have a lot more members. So we really need you to make a choice to support us by logging into your Coop account and following instructions so you can find us on their system: Log in to your Co-op account, choose the “Young People” option and find us. If you cannot find us using the “within 15 miles” option, please use this address hps://membership. coop.co.uk/causes/58318 Torphins please note: your local Co-op is not part of the scheme. If you have a main Co-op account and shop in Aboyne for example, then this would apply. Do you use Amazon? Another way you can help us is by choosing us as your AMAZON SMILE Charity. Every purchase you make will cost you nothing extra and will benefit the club. Just visit : hps://smile.amazon.co.uk and select Cromar Future Group as your preferred charity.

When times are tough, don’t stop ADVERTISING!
The Fountain relies on advertising to pay for design and printing and it means a lot that so many regular customers have continued to advertise during the Covid calamity. I am always delighted to welcome new advertisers, and you can see details of costs and deals etc on p34. At Myriad Pro Publishing, advertisers are not just a space on a page. All advertisers benefit from featuring in a Facebook album every quarter, and where advertisers’ own posts are seen on that social media plaorm, they will be shared. Feel free to tag The Fountain to make sure. New customers can also benefit from introductory editorial features, and there are perks to being a long-term advertiser too, as well as discounts for featuring in the Alford and Banchory publications. The business landscape and publicity methods are changing all the time, and especially at the moment! So if you have any ideas on how The Fountain can further support you, do let me know. No matter if you are on the main street, out in the sticks, working from your spare room or just operating online, I can help. Have you started a new business in the Aboyne area? Want a mention? Get in touch.
The Fountain represents a unique opportunity for you to promote your business to a targeed area at reasonable cost. Ad rates start at just £15 for a small ad (A7 size). Around 1,500 copies are distributed through the doors of residences in the village, prominent spots in the local community and within businesses willing to stock it. Geographically it covers Aboyne and the surrounding areas and includes Tarland. All Myriad Pro Publications are also available to read online at issuu.com

Lady V’s Shoes
A column on village life from Victoria Kennedy Huzzah - It is 2022! Happy new year. May 2022 be full of many blessings for you all. My husband and I have decided that this year we will find more activities that we can do together. In general, my husband favors the outdoors, with mountain biking being his preferred activity of choice. I, on the other hand, am a creature of comfort. At the end of the day, I enjoy nothing more than changing into one of my many oversized jumpers, dimming the lights and curling up on the sofa. So, herein lies the question: how do we find a middle ground between the high hills and the Hobbit-like trappings of home? Well, as luck would have it, we have already managed to partake in one shared activity this year. Our children very sweetly
gave us both vouchers for Line of Sight this Christmas, so on a welcome day off we donned our puffiest jackets and headed to Tarland. Line of Sight is a purpose built 25m outdoor shooting range in the heart of Deeside. Needless to say, this was quite the change to our usual Friday morning routine and, I won’t lie, I was quite nervous about shooting. Thankfully Line of Sight’s Paul Basford swiftly quelled any misgivings I had, and soon I was fully immersed in the experience. I even managed to get a bullseye, much to my smug satisfaction. Despite my enjoyment, however, my husband ultimately got the higher overall score (by, I kid you not, one point). This means only one thing – We will have to go back and have a rematch! With this in mind, perhaps shooting will become our ongoing middle ground. After all, it does meet halfway between our two habitual sengs. I can wrap up warm and take some calming breaths in a more stationery manner, while my husband can enjoy the fresh, Deeside air around him while still feeling a rush of adrenaline in a controlled manner. It’s a win / win situation (although next time, that little Line of Sight medal will be mine!).

You can find details of our meetings, minutes and reports on our website or contact us via Facebook or via middeesidecommunitycouncil@gmail.com
