South Carolina beach monitoring season begins May 1 and runs through October 1. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) routinely collects water samples at more than 120 locations along South Carolina’s beaches. If high numbers of bacteria are found, they issue an advisory for that portion of the beach.

Advisories do not mean that the beach is closed. Wading, fishing and shell collecting do not pose a risk. Advisories are often issued after heavy rainfalls when higher bacteria counts are detected and often last less than 24 hours. The advisory is lifted when sample results fall below the limit of 104CFU/100mL.

If there is a swimming advisory at my favorite beach, does that mean water there is generally not safe?

No. Short-term swim advisories are for isolated spots at monitoring locations where swimming is not advised. Most advisories are temporary – lasting only a day or two.

What is tested in beach water monitoring samples?

Enterococcus bacteria are tested in the samples to indicate presence of bacteria in the water. Elevated levels of these bacteria can indicate possible contamination for a short period of time.

What’s the best way to determine the most accurate, up-to-date information about the water quality at my favorite beach?

Visit www.CheckYourBeach.com and use the interactive GIS tool to find your beach and check the most recent test results for the area, as well as find information on all area beach access points and amenities.

Dreams come true at The Beach

There’s no place like Myrtle Beach to make your wedding dreams a reality. Picture exchanging vows with the ocean as your backdrop, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, endless vendor options, and fun-filled activities for your guests.

Whether you envision a traditional, historic, or modern celebration, The Beach offers the perfect venue to match your style. With romantic spots for proposals and everything from lodging to dining, Myrtle Beach ensures that your special day is unforgettable for everyone.

Hosting a wedding on The Beach

The most popular wedding venue at The Beach is, of course, on the sand. However, it’s essential to research beforehand, as public beach weddings have restrictions—no tents, chairs, or commercial equipment allowed. For more elaborate setups, private beach areas offer flexibility without these limitations, allowing you to create the perfect ceremony.

Marriage licenses in S.C.

One of the perks of getting married in South Carolina is how simple it is to obtain a marriage license. Licenses, costing around $50, can be obtained at any county courthouse with a photo ID and social security number. The license is valid statewide with no expiration date. Just remember, applications must be on file for at least 24 hours before the license is issued. Couples can apply at the Government & Justice Center in Conway. For more information, call (843) 915-5370.
