Myrtle Beach Boardwalk There’s nothing quite like feeling the salty, ocean breeze. It’s even better on Myrtle Beach’s popular Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade where you can take in the picturesque shoreline and glittering Atlantic Ocean. Extending from the Second Avenue Pier to 16th Avenue North, the wide 1.3-mile boardwalk is something the entire family will enjoy. The Boardwalk has recently undergone a facelift, now featuring recycled plastic boards in nine colors making it more accessible and more durable for years to come. TRY LIFE ON
The Water R
elaxing alongside the Atlantic Ocean in a beach chair with a cold drink is a given while at The Beach, but there are so many more activities on the water to try.
Beyond the ocean, the beautiful marshes, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the scenic Waccamaw River all provide a perfect backdrop for a variety of water-centric activities.
WATERSPORTS If you’re looking for fun aboard the waves, you can tackle the surf on a banana boat, take a surfing lesson, rent a jet ski, or go windsurfing or kiteboarding and let the breeze take you for a ride. A speedy airboat is a fun way to get around, and parasailing will send you toward the heavens for a thrilling new vantage point of the Grand Strand. Head to North Myrtle Beach for a unique experience, and try your hand — or more aptly, your feet — at wakeboarding or kneeboarding. Here you can also cool off by playing on an inflatable aqua park that floats atop a lake.

THINGS TO DO
FISHING Fishing is one of the area’s most popular activities. Whether you cast a net in the marsh, fish from one of the many piers, or fish in the surf, you’re sure to have a good time. For those looking for a more serious fishing experience, there are a variety of fishing charters to choose from whether it be a quick half-day trip, a full-day group tour, or a private deep-sea excursion to the Gulf Stream.
CRUISES & TOURS If you’re seeking something with a slower pace, there are plenty of relaxing aquatic activities, including a variety of cruises and boat tours. Couples in search of an intimate evening can indulge in a sunset cruise and take in gorgeous scenery, dinner and live entertainment — an experience sure to spark some romance. You can also try your luck with a casino boat cruise from the Little River waterfront, take a dolphin cruise with Blue Wave Adventures to spot Flipper or enjoy a few beverages on the Inlet with a brewboat tour. Or try a guided kayak or canoe tour to spot wildlife and see the area from a different perspective.

THINGS TO DO
Myrtle Beach
Since 1944, The Bowery music hall —located just steps off the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk —has entertained millions with its stripped down atmosphere and southern flair. Open seven days a week with cold drinks and live country music, the world-famous Bowery is known as the spot where local legends and country music hall of famers, Alabama, got their start.
Broadway at the Beach Myrtle Beach
In addition to great shopping and dining, this 350-acre complex also has a ton of great options for entertainment. During the summer season, you’ll find strolling performers throughout the complex. There are also nightly shows at Legends In Concert and the Broadway Theater as well as a fun dueling piano bar. If live bands are your thing, you’ll find talent across a variety of genres throughout the restaurants and bars of the area known at The Avenue. New to Broadway at the Beach, The Hangout also offers live music throughout the year, especially in the summer on their outdoor stage.
Murrells Inlet MarshWalk Murrells Inlet
With the scenic salt marsh as your backdrop, you’ll find plenty of live music along this lively stretch of bars and restaurants. Check out top-notch local acts at the Tuna Shak at Wicked Tuna, the Tiki Bar at Wahoo’s or the patio at Creek Ratz. And don’t forget Drunken Jack’s or Dead Dog Saloon, one of the area’s top spots for tunes, complete with a large open-air patio.
Nance Plaza Downtown Myrtle Beach
Located in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach’s Arts & Innovation District, Nance Plaza is a great place to find live music. Whether it’s coming from the nearby Grand Strand Brewing Company or during one of the many Nights at Nance events — which happen on Thursday evenings throughout the spring and fall — you’ll find some of the area’s best acts performing on the outdoor stage here.

THINGS TO DO
Main Street North North Myrtle Beach
The historic stretch of road leads into the heart of downtown North Myrtle Beach and hosts a variety of great venues and live music events. Not only does this area play home to many annual shag dancing events, you’ll also find Beach music pumping out of famous shag bars like Duck’s, Harold’s on the Ocean and OD Bar & Grill. There’s also the Music on Main concert series, a popular event that draws thousands of fans to an area commonly referred to as “the horseshoe” for live music of all sorts with a gorgeous beachfront view.
MUST-DO
SHAG DANCING
The Myrtle Beach area is the birthplace of South Carolina’s official state dance — the Shag. Chances are pretty good that when you are in North Myrtle Beach, you’ll hear beach music along the famed Ocean Drive area. It was on this strip that South Carolina’s official state dance was born in the 1940s. While some steps may remind you of the jitterbug or different swing dances, the Shag is smoother and moves at a slower pace. It’s worth the trip to Ocean Drive to check out the dancers, many of whom participate twice a year in a shagging migration to this part of the coast. There are even junior shagging events for younger participants, so no one misses out on the classic Carolina fun. See video of The Shag, learn more about the dance, and find out where the best shag clubs are on The Grand Strand at VisitMyrtleBeach.com

THINGS TO DO
AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL SITES The Myrtle Beach area has been greatly influenced by its African American heritage and roots that date back to the 1700s. From what we eat to the way we speak, so much of who we are can be traced back to the African American history in the region.
Brookgreen Gardens
The over 9,000 acres are located on the site of four former rice plantations in Murrells Inlet. It is home to a Lowcountry History Center and Lowcountry Trail which tell the history of what life was like on a rice plantation. Brookgreen also offers several Gullah Geechee historical programs throughout the year.
Charlie’s Place
Charlie’s Place — home to the former Fitzgerald Hotel — is a site that honors the work of Charlie Fitzgerald and his wife, Sarah. The couple owned a nightclub where famous musicians, such as Little Richard and Billie Holiday, performed their music from the 1930s to 1960s. The Fitzgeralds' home has been refurbished to an event and community center, and several of the motel rooms have been reconstructed to show visitors the history of travel during segregation.
Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum Artifacts from the school and the period are on
display in this newly restored school to tell the story of African American education in Myrtle Beach prior to desegregation. A reference library of African American history is also available to the public.

THINGS TO DO
L.W. Paul Living History Farm
Before The Beach became a vacation destination, the local economy was driven by agriculture. Take a trip back to that period at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. This 17-acre farm gives visitors an idea of what it was like to live in the region between 1900 and 1955. Visitors can take part in activities such as plowing with mules, making lye soap and milking cows.
Hobcaw Barony
Located between the Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this 16,000-acre property is dedicated to research and education in history and ecology. It includes buildings and sites that reflect the lives of African Americans from the early 19th century through the first half of the 20th century.
Hopsewee Plantation
Hopsewee Plantation, a historic rice plantation, features hands-on workshops to learn the art of sweetgrass basket weaving taught by a Gullah descendent, an eighth-generation weaver, named Vera Manigault.
Freewoods Farm

A taste of the sea
Myrtle Beach has long been known as a seafood capital along the east coast. We’re known not only for the quality of our locally caught, fresh seafood, but also for the great diversity of options our restaurant scene offers. Here you’ll find everything from tropical beach bars with live entertainment to fine dining establishments with breathtaking waterfront views to grandiose family-friendly buffets serving hundreds of items. At the area's northern end, North Carolina Calabash-style cuisine reigns supreme, with traditional lightly breaded, fried seafood meals. And don’t forget about the hush puppies! These fried corn fritters are the perfect southern bite. Further south, you’ll be in the heart of the Lowcountry, where chefs use local ingredients such as Carolina rice, stone-ground grits, shrimp, blue crab, grouper, and country ham in traditional recipes handed down from the Gullah community of the southeastern coastal states.

Have you ever heard of Chicken Bog? Trying to decide where to eat?
The Myrtle Beach area has over 2,000 restaurants to choose from, so picking a place to eat can be tricky. We've made it easier with lists of all the best restaurants for any cuisine you're craving. Check it out on VisitMyrtleBeach.com
Chicken Bog is a staple dish of the region made with chicken, sausage, and rice. Cooked all day, low and slow, the core ingredients may stay the same, but the spices and extra flavors vary from chef to chef. Several restaurants around the Myrtle Beach area offer their own interpretation of the dish – and opinions on who does it best! Try a bowl at Big Mike’s Soul Food in the heart of Myrtle Beach, or take a short trip to Loris, where chicken bog began, to try Shorty’s Grill. If you really want to learn a thing or two about chicken bog, visit the Loris Bog Off Festival every October and try a variety of chicken bogs made from generations of old recipes.

MINIATURE GOLF If golfing on the fairway isn’t for you, give mini golf a swing! The first mini golf course was built in Myrtle Beach in 1930, and the rest was history. With over 30 courses to choose from, Myrtle Beach is considered the “Mini Golf Capital of the World.” The Grand Strand offers more mini golf courses per square mile than any other city in the US. In fact, the US ProMiniGolf Association, which is part of the larger World MiniGolf Association, holds their own “Masters” tournament annually at the Hawaiian Rumble Mini Golf Course in North Myrtle Beach. Our mini golf courses are designed with elaborate themes intended to capture the imagination and excitement of each kid who comes to play – and the kid in every adult! New to the area this year is Red Dragon Cove, with 36 holes in a fun, elaborate Asian-theme. It’s not every day that the Myrtle Beach area adds a new mini golf course, so this is a must-see!

THE MYRTLE BEACH AREA GUIDE TO SWIM AND BEACH SAFETY
Check Beach my
FAQ: If there is a swimming advisory at my favorite beach, does that mean water there is generally not safe? No. Short-term swim advisories are for isolated spots at monitoring locations where swimming is not advised. Most advisories are temporary – lasting only a day or two.
South Carolina beach monitoring season begins May 1 and runs through October 1. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) routinely collects water samples at more than 120 locations along South Carolina’s beaches. If high numbers of bacteria are found, they issue an advisory for that portion of the beach.
What is tested in beach water monitoring samples?
Advisories do not mean that the beach is closed. Wading, fishing and shell collecting do not pose a risk. Advisories are often issued after heavy rainfalls when higher bacteria counts are detected and often last less than 24 hours. The advisory is lifted when sample results fall below the limit of 104CFU/100mL.
What’s the best way to determine the most accurate, up-to-date information about the water quality at my favorite beach?
CheckMyBeach.com
Enterococcus bacteria are tested in the samples to indicate presence of bacteria in the water. Elevated levels of these bacteria can indicate possible contamination for a short period of time.
Visit www.CheckYourBeach.com and use the interactive GIS tool to find your beach and check the most recent test results for the area, as well as find information on all area beach access points and amenities.

AREA INFORMATION
HOSTING A WEDDING ON The Beach Of course, the most popular venue for any wedding at The Beach is on the sand.
If you’re planning to get married on the beach, it’s important to do your research first though, depending on where you are on the beach, there may be restrictions on how elaborate the ceremony can be. If you are on a public beach, you can still have your wedding, but it can’t be commercial (meaning no tents, chairs or commercial equipment allowed). There are, however, private portions of the beach, where there are no restrictions on commercially produced weddings.
MARRIAGE LICENSES IN S.C. Another one of the incentives to getting married in South Carolina is how easy it is to get a marriage license here compared to other states. A license may be obtained in any county courthouse within the state for approximately $50. A photo ID and social security number are required, and the license is good for the entire state and has no expiration date. Applications must be on file at least 24 hours before a license can be issued. Couples may fill out applications at the Government & Justice Centre in Conway. For more information, call (843) 915-5370.
Your Guide to Romance
Even if you’re not tying the knot, there’s plenty of romance to be had at The Beach. Find the best romantic restaurants, honeymoon spots & couple getaway ideas at VisitMyrtleBeach.com
