The Myrtle Beach Beer Trail will take you on a tour of the area’s best local breweries, brewpubs, and craft brew experiences. As you sample your way across 10 breweries and 60 miles of beaches, you’ll not only get a taste of some of the best beverages The Beach has to offer, but you’ll also get a taste of what makes our area such a unique place to visit — complete with amazing food, fun places to hang out, and colorful personalities. What’s even better? You can earn prizes along the way. Bring a friend to help you tackle the Longboard nachos, a huge 14” pan covered with melty cheese and toppings including pulled pork, chicken or chili, smashed avocado, black bean salad, pickled jalapeños, chipotle crema, and a scoop of sour cream. Located in the heart of the city’s downtown Arts & Innovation District, Grand Strand Brewery boasts a prime location within walking distance of many popular tourist attractions, including the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and the SkyWheel.

GSB offers a welcoming atmosphere, with a friendly staff and a laid-back vibe that makes it the perfect spot to unwind after a day at The Beach.

The spacious interior features rustic decor, exposed brick walls, and plenty of seating options, including an outdoor patio area with games, live music, and a large plaza. They also have live music on Saturday afternoons and don’t miss the first Sunday of every month from 2-5 p.m. to catch ‘Thursday’s Dead’, the area’s premier Grateful Dead tribute band.

Just north of the Grand Strand, about 10 miles past the S.C./N.C. border, you will find Makai Brewing Company, a great island-themed brewery located in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

Since opening its doors in 2017, this award-winning brewery has become one of the north end’s hidden gems, thanks to its laid-back coastal vibe and a selection of unique brews that are second to none. The taproom itself is small and homey, but there’s plenty of fun to be had, from board games for the kids to an outdoor patio for soaking in the sun, and events including trivia nights, live music, and more.

Makai’s small-batch system allows the team to be creative with fun, fresh brews for each season. Along with flagship options like Carolina Tropical IPA, Fire Knife Double IPA, and Mango Reef Blonde Ale, you’ll also find creations like Kamanawanalei’ya New England IPA, Humuhumunukunukuapua’a Pale Ale, and What the Fuggle! Oatmeal Stout.

Best Bites

Though the brewery itself only serves basic snacks, it is located next to an excellent deli called The Butcher of Brunswick. Makai welcomes guests to bring in their sandwich from next door — or any outside food for that matter. The brewery also invites food trucks on a regular basis.

Located in the Market Common district, Tidal Creek Brewhouse is known across South Carolina for its locally-crafted beers, fresh-brewed coffee, a friendly atmosphere and a calendar full of fun events.

Opened in 2020, Tidal Creek is a taproom-focused brewery, coffee roaster and chef-run kitchen with a variety of areas to enjoy including its bar, a taproom, an outdoor patio, a dog run and a large beer garden with an outdoor bar, firepits, games and live music.

Not only is it one of the top breweries, but Tidal Creek is also known as one of he beach’s best spots for brunch and has great food all day long.

With more than a dozen house-brewed beers on tap, the selection runs the gamut. Try a Libertore Italian Pilsner, named after the brewery’s owner, or opt for popular choices like Harmonic Hefeweizen, Grand Strand IPA or Breezy Blonde.

Enjoy the Shrimp & Grits or a Creek Omelette for breakfast, a brewmaster burger, fish & chips or the house-smoked pork and wings for lunch, go international with a Brat Platter or Freedom Pierogis for dinner or just stop in to enjoy Tidal Creek’s famous Coastal Pretzels for Happy Hour — you really can’t go wrong with the food here.

Winyah Bay Brewing Company

This hidden gem is located in the historic port town of Georgetown, South Carolina, about 30 miles south of Myrtle Beach. Located along the beautiful Harborwalk, this nanobrewery is inside Buzz’s Roost, a long-time local sports bar and restaurant. The atmosphere here is inviting, with spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas, leaving plenty of room to gather with friends and enjoy a cold beer with stunning views of Winyah Bay.

Winyah Bay Brewing Company also has plans to expand and will be opening a dedicated taproom facility later this year.

Winyah Bay offers a fantastic selection of beers, with a focus on locally-sourced ingredients. Check out refreshing choices like the Blueberry Wheat and White Boots Pineapple Ale, or hop-forward selections like the “Hop”sewee IPA — named after a nearby historic plantation.

Buzz’s Roost is well-known locally for its delicious menu of Southern-inspired dishes with a focus on fresh seafood. You can’t go wrong with hearty options like Low Country Boil and Shrimp & Grits, sandwiches filled with Mahi, Flounder, and Grouper or great snacks like Buzz’s famous Crab Balls.

Located at The Market Common — also known as Myrtle Beach’s “upscale, downtown” shopping center — this brewpub features an inviting atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating options that are perfect for enjoying a cold beer and a tasty meal.

Gordon Biersch’s selection of handcrafted beer is brewed on-site and comes in a variety of styles, including German lagers, American ales, and seasonal specialty brews. You can’t go wrong with the popular Marzen, a mildly sweet, auburn-colored lager that goes down smooth.

The menu offers delicious pub-style fare, including burgers, sandwiches, and salads. A must-try is Biersch’s legendary garlic fries, started as a late-night treat by founder Dan Gordon over 30 years ago. These tasty treats are tossed in olive oil and seasoned with freshly chopped garlic and parsley.

Highlights: Big Waterfront Backyard, Concerts, Draft Selection

Boasting itself as “Myrtle Beach’s Waterfront Brewery,” Independent Republic is a microbrewery and beer garden that sits along the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway and is part of one of the area’s most popular hangouts, The Boathouse Waterway Bar & Grill.

The Boathouse has spent nearly 20 years establishing itself as one of the area’s premier spots for waterfront fun, with “the best Backyard in town” featuring gorgeous views of the water, easy access via boat, and an outdoor stage that hosts free concerts every Sunday all summer long. Inside, you’ll find a solid selection of pub fare to eat, another live music stage, and plenty more brews on tap, including some great regional selections you won’t find anywhere else at the beach.

The staff here is dedicated to crafting unique brews using local ingredients. Selections include punny brews like the Tourist Saison, Wheat Chin Music Double IPA, and Berried Alive berry Pale Ale, as well as more standard fare like the Nellie Light easy-drinking lager.

Best Bites

Boathouse Chicken Bog Balls are a twist on a Grand Strand delicacy. These snackable bites are filled with rice, pulled chicken, and onion, then rolled in flour and deep-fried for a unique, tasty treat.

As the original Myrtle Beach brewery, New South brewed its first batch in 1998 and has been working to carve out the local beer scene ever since. Known as “The Beer From Here,” this 20-barrel brewhouse produces around 3,000 barrels annually to distribute across the Grand Strand.

New South’s facility is located in a warehouse about a mile from the beach and features a small bar area, a larger taproom where visitors can sit right where the magic happens, and a fenced-in outdoor area with picnic tables. Outside, you’ll often find food trucks serving up local cuisine or folks playing disc golf.

New South Brewing also offers tours every Wednesday at 3 pm. The tour is just $7 and includes beer samples throughout the tour, a souvenir glass, and a full beer following the tour.

Best Brews

For 20+ years, New South made its name on the back of its flagship White Ale, an American Wheat comparable to Blue Moon. In recent years, New South IPA, Dirty Myrtle Double IPA, and Dark Star Porter have also become local favorites.

Best Bites

New South doesn’t have a full kitchen, but it does have a spot in the parking lot for hosting some of the area’s best food trucks. Regular visitors like Mama + Papa, Rocco’s Tacos, Beach Bites and The Gnosh Pit all pair well with a frosty New South brew.

Eight house-made ales and lagers are always on tap and available to go in half-gallon growlers or 32 oz. crowlers. We recommend the hoppy Swamp Fox IPA, the malty Neck Red ESB, or the smooth-drinking Shakedown Wheat.

Try the Chicken & Waffles, which features fried chicken breast over house-made sweet potato waffles with honey-pecan butter, smothered in creamy country sausage gravy. Other favorites include Shrimp & Grits, Cajun Seafood Cornbread and Blackened Salmon with Cajun Cream Sauce.

Opened in 2022, the Murrells Inlet location of Southern Hops is the offshoot of a well-known brewery that has been operating successfully in Florence, S.C., since 2010.

Promising visitors a taste of Southern hospitality, handcrafted beers, and a fun atmosphere, this place fits the laid-back inlet vibe perfectly and has been a welcome addition to The Beach’s brewery scene.

Outside, you’re greeted by a landlocked boat sitting out front, leading to a nice patio area with a fire pit, cornhole, and plenty of seating. Inside, you’ll find a long bar, garage doors to provide an open-air feel, and tables where you can see the brewing process happening in real-time.

Six flagship brews cover a gamut of styles, from Pop’s Pilsner and Goldilocks Golden Ale to Blackwater Porter and the 5 Points IPA. Folks looking to get adventurous should try options like the Tiramisu Porter or the aptly-named Lilly The Great Russian Imperial Stout.

Located at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, Duplin is a popular destination for wine lovers, with a huge facility featuring indoor and outdoor bars, multiple tasting rooms, a gift shop, and much more.

It is known for its delicious Muscadine wines, which are made using the native grapes of the Southeastern United States. The tasting room offers a wide variety of wines to try, including both dry and sweet varieties, as well as fruit-infused wines.

Duplin also offers tours of the winemaking facilities, which include the history of the winery, visits to the bottling and labeling room, the fermentation tanks, and the barrel room, and plenty of samples.

La Belle Amie is a charming and picturesque winery situated on a 48-acre property that was once a tobacco plantation. The winery is known for its delicious and award-winning wines, made from a variety of grapes as well as blackberries, and blueberries. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the winery and vineyard, learning about the history of winemaking in the region and the process of making La Belle Amie’s unique wines.

Twelve 33 Distillery is the Grand Strand’s only craft distillery, producing small-batch spirits, made using locally sourced ingredients. Visitors can also take a tour of the distillery to learn about the history and production process of each spirit.
