Pet of the Week – Humphrey and Flip
Humphrey and Flip are the sweetest young dogs that are being fostered together. Humphrey is the one with his tongue out. In fact both are still puppies at only 4 to 5 months. Both boys are fostered in a home with other dogs, cats and kids. They are loving dogs that are great with kids. They are lab mixes with some boxer or pit bull terrier mixed in. They are playful and affectionate. They won’t jump all over you, but they will give you tons of kisses. They are too sweet to grow up in a foster home, they deserve their forever home. They can be adopted together or separately. The adoption fee is $350 for one of $550 for both. The adoption fee includes complete vetting and microchipping. If you want to meet one or both of these lovable puppies, please email us at ABRAangels@gmail.com. ABRA, INC is a not for profit foster based animal rescue for more information on ABRA you can visit the website abraangels.com

Call To Action To Expand The South Shore Line Regional Planning Commission and the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority. “Laying Tracks for the Future” will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 10 at the Avalon Manor at 3550 E. U.S. 30 in Merrillville. The event will feature a keynote address from U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, who represents Indiana’s 1st Congressional District and has championed the cause for the South Shore expansion. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear the benefits of the South Shore line expansion from Hammond to Dyer, as well as hearing first-hand accounts from professionals based in Northwest Indiana whose lives would change with more access to Chicago. Emerging Leaders Network is joining the call to action for the local funds needed for the South Shore extension to Dyer to become a reality. Half of the $571 million price tag for the project must be raised at the local or state level in order to qualify for the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts program, which could fund the other half of the project.

About $16 million annually will have to be committed locally for the life of the project to qualify it for the 50 percent match from the New Starts program. A study commissioned by the South Shore’s operator finds an extension to Dyer would result in 5,600 new daily riders hauling about $147 million per year in paychecks back to Northwest Indiana from Chicago. South Shore riders generate $14 million annually in income and sales tax collections for the state, according to the study performed by Policy Analytics, of Indianapolis. At the start of the construction phase, the Dyer extension would add $5 million to that figure. With trains up and running on the extension to Dyer, that figure could swell to $45.9 million by 2033. Construction of the 8-mile rail extension to Dyer could start in 2020. Please email Matt Glaros at mglaros@ebsinsure.com or call (219) 313-4773 for more information.

Governors State University Launches Search For Mascot G ov er nor s St at e Un i v er s it y t o d a y launched “Operation Mascot,” its official search for a school mascot. The university is enlisting the help of students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community for input. The mascot will be the university’s first. It is another achievement to accompany other recent firsts including the university’s f i rst f resh ma n class, t he f i rst st udent residence, which opens in July, and several intercollegiate and recreational sports teams that will soon begin competition for the first time. The university began taking suggestions for a mascot today and will continue until March 10. From that point, a campus wide select ion com m it tee w i l l choose fou r finalists and submit them to a designer to sketch. The four finalists and their designs will be made public so the GSU community can vote for their choice. The mascot will

be chosen based on a combination of the community’s votes and university officials’ input. “Our slogan ‘Big ideas live here’ is not limited to the classroom. It is a pervasive part of our campus culture,” said Aurelio Valente, GSU’s dean of students and associate vice president of academic affairs. “We didn’t want to restrict our ideas and suggestions for a project like this solely to university staff and faculty. We are an integral part of a broader and diverse community, so it is important to have as much input from the community as possible for something that is going to be a lasting symbol of the university.” T he of f ic ia l a n nou nc ement of t he university mascot is scheduled for May 1. Prizes will go to those who submitted the four finalists. To submit a suggestion for the mascot, go to www.govst.edu/operationmascot.

No Amount Too Small! WOODROW WILCOX On February 26, 2014, I received a letter with a bill from a client who lives in Crown Point, Indiana. The amount of t he bill was only $4.14. But, no amount is too sma ll to help our clients when we can do something. I contacted the client’s i nsu ra nce compa ny to learn what it knew of the medical bill. It reported t hat it pa id t he bill by check last November. It gave the check number, the date the check was made, and the date the check was cashed. I wrote a polite letter to t he med ica l ser v ice and stated these facts. I invited them to contact the insurance company directly if they needed a copy of the cashed check for their records. I told them that I understood t h at m i st a ke s h appen and I just asked them to correct this mista ke so that their records showed that our client owed them nothing. That’s not the smallest a mou nt t hat I have worked to help resolve. I remember a few years ago when one of our clients a sked me to check on a bill for $2.12. That bill

Bob Oderwald Is Not Going Anywhere Bob Oderwald, State Farm Insurance agent of 29 years announces he is not retiring and he is not moving his present location. This is in response to the numerous telephone calls Bob’s office has received after The Shopper ran an article informing that Hugh Smith opened an office at 18221 Torrence Avenue, suite 1D. Hugh Smith is indeed opening his State Farm Office, but it will be adjacent to Bob’s office. The Oderwald family has been with State Farm since 1941, when George Oderwald, Bob’s Grandfather had his office on the front porch of his home on Wentworth Avenue in Lansing. Bob and his staff will continue the Good Neighbor Service just like his family has for the past 73 years. Bob would like to thanks his policyholders for their tremendous loyalty all these years. So if you get a chance, stop by 18221 Torrence Avenue Suite 1A and say “Hello.”

16250 Louis Avenue Suite A So. Holland, IL 60473
Athlete’s Feet
Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Emotionally Attached MIKE BUDER When it’s time to say goodbye to a house you love. I remember being ver y i mpressed w it h the property on my first v isit. The 100 year-old farm house shone w it h caref ul restoration and charm. The acreage that surrounded it was dotted with heirloom fruit trees a nd orga n ic pat hw ay s winding through a variety of f l o w e r a n d v e g g i e g a rden s . T he ow ner, and mother of one of my recent clients, wanted my opinion as to its va lue. Tr ue comps were ha rd to find, but we came up with a plan for pricing. Howe ver, a f ter a long interview, we determined she wasn’t emot iona lly ready to sell. Our relat ionsh ip developed into a warm friendship, and two years later she finally was ready to say goodbye. Years of taking care of the house on her own (after her husband died) had taken its toll. She longed for a new vision and new adventures. It d id n’t ta ke long to get an offer, and fortunately it was a cash buyer with plenty of motivation. The couple, who owned and adjacent property, wanted to buy the house for their d a u g ht e r a nd s on-i nlaw. Getting a loan on the property might have been difficult. It’s a built on a skirted post and pier foundation. In addition, at the time, there was no heat source to the second f loor be d room s. T he
process of sel l i ng wa s an emotional one. The property was filled with memor ies-her ch i ld ren had played in the nearby c r e e k , h e r d a u g ht e r ’s wedding was held in one of the gardens, a dog was bu r ied u nder neat h a tree in the back yard. At times, it proved difficult to w a l k t hat f i ne l i ne between friendship and a professional relationship. F o r t u n a t e l y, h e r s o n and daughter, also both excited for their mom’s freedom from the upkeep of t he home, helped t h r ou g h t h e d i f f i c u l t moments. The children threw a birthday party for their mom, the weekend before she moved out. Guests gat hered in t he ga rdens on a wa r m summer day and enjoyed libations, delicious food, and shared fond stories. It was the perfect time to say goodbye to a well-loved home. Good Leaders Make Good Decisions RENEE N. HALE, DSL Decision-ma k ing is inev itable. Each one of u s mu st m a ke a nd ca r r y out decisions ever y day. Some people ma ke qu ick decisions ; ot h e r s c a n’t s e e m t o arrive at a decision. Our decisions a f fect ot hers and ourselves; they may concern trivial matters or life-and-death situations. We ca n’t avoid ma k ing decisions, so why not do everything in our power to become sk i l led a nd prepared to make the best decisions possible? As Will Rogers once said, “Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.” Therefore, consider t h ree keys i n decision-making: First, k now your personal values because they will guide you in all decisions. W hat are the non-negotiable principles in your life? You live by these standards. Knowing y ou r o w n v a l ue s c a n narrow down the choices in decision-ma k ing For example, if one of your p e r s on a l v a l u e s w e r e honesty, then a decision to avoid t he tr ut h in a situation would be out of the question. Roy Disney went so fa r a s to say, “It’s not ha rd to ma ke decisions when you know what your values are.” Second, i nvolve t he r ig ht people. W h ich relat ionsh ips f ig u re i n your decision? If this is a work environment, who m ig ht you col laborate with to address the issue
appropr iately? A sk i ng for i nput f rom ot hers, becoming well informed of per t inent facts, a nd consider i ng d i f ferent poi nt s of v iew a re a l l ways of expanding your capacit y to a r r ive at a sound decision on a ny matter. Third, create scenarios to t h i n k a decision t hrough to its outcome and implications. Name t he steps in a decision and describe the c on se quenc e s of e ach step. You c a n do t h i s b y f or m i n g “I f-T h e n” statements: “If I do this, then that w ill happen.” The emerging details of the “If-Then” statements clarify the results of the decision. Thinking about what a decision ultimately means for you and others w ill help you ma ke the best decision. Leadership ex per t John Maxwell encourages, “Successful leaders have the courage to take action wh i le ot hers hesitate.” Ref lect on your va lues, your relationships, and the consequences of your decisions. Then, act with confidence. Enjoy making good decisions! Dr. Renée N. Hale is co-founder of WellSpirit Consu lt ing Group, Inc. a nd co-host of Leaders Alive! 1st & 3rd Thursdays at 5 p.m. on W JOB 12 3 0 A M . Governors State University’s College of Education and Metropolitan Institute for Leadership in Education are sponsoring two workshops for school and district office administrators and staff. On Thursday, March 13 renowned speaker and educator Jennifer Abra ms w ill present “Resilience, Emot iona l Intelligence, and Accountability,” from 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., in GSU’s E-Lounge. This program provides essential strategies and resources for meeting the challenges of working in schools and achieving academic and organizational outcomes. This workshop will assist leaders in developing interpersonal skills to better deal with the complex needs of their district, department or school, and help those they lead to do the same. On Tuesday, April 8, Dr. Kathleen Hickey will present “Creating a Turnaround Culture to Close the Achievement and Opportunity Gaps” from 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in GSU’s E-Lounge. This workshop will help school leaders understand how effective turnaround strategies can create and sustain a culture of high expectations. Research shows that schools that make a difference in student learning are led by principals who make a significant and measurable contribution to student learning and the effectiveness of staff. Participants in this workshop will develop a turnaround plan that can be applied in their schools to create a culture of opportunity and effectively impact student achievement and opportunity gaps. Space is limited. To register: http://mileprograms. eventbrite.com or call (708) 534-4024. The workshop price is $20 per person, but teams of three or more from the same district can attend free. Governor State University is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois.

Meet the Candidates at ‘Coffee The 3 things you With The Mayor’
The “Real Life” Real Estate Column www.myshopper.biz/columnists/
must have to buy a home...
ARTHUR V. VEAL IV There are 3 things that you must have in order to buy a home in today’s market. In the past you were able to get a mortgage just by having one of these 3 items but now the tides have changed. Banks now wa nt a l l t hree of t hese before they will consider you. I ca l l t hem t he 3 pillars of home financing. They are credit, income, and savings. You must be strong in all three of these areas or you can forget about buying a home. This is the hard and fast truth about today’s mortgage market. W hile their are still some things you can do to get around these 3, for the most part all of them are required. Let’s look at each. Income is required and not just any income but verifiable income with a long work history. If you just got a job or recently t r a n sit ione d to a ne w position then you might not qualify. Cred it goes w it hout saying. If you don’t have a credit score of at least 640 in most cases then lenders won’t consider you. There are some exceptions but Licensed childcare provider gives loving care in my home. Works with parents hours from 6wk - 12yrs. of age.
you will have to do some research in order to find a program for you. Finally there is savings. Banks want you to have considerable sav ings of a ny where f rom 10-20 % dow n to buy t hat new home u n less you get a government backed loan (FHA) but even with this t hey w a nt to see you r savings. By the way this must also be verifiable. So if you are recovering from economic hardship or a job loss then know what you are facing before you start your search for a new home. Chances are t he sooner you prepare for t his ha rsh new env ironment t he better pr e p a r e d y ou w i l l b e when you try to buy. Next week I will discuss some alternatives that may be available to you. Unt i l nex t we ek ... Arthur Veal is owner of We Buy Houses Home Services LLC. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES You ca n read about it i n book s. You c a n probably f i nd a mov ie a bout it . But t here’s not h i ng qu ite as v iv id a s a persona l accou nt of someone who l ived through it. “It” being a torpedo attack, a sinking ship, and then stranded at sea for days. If you haven’t had a chance to read the first three parts of this epic WWII letter of Sgt. Lewis Haa n a nd t he SS Peter Silvester, you definitely want to visit The Shopper online and catch them. Continuing on: …t h e y w e r e n e v e r found, because some men who were in their beds were thrown right out of their beds as the terrific explosion blew the beds right out. We were finally up on deck, and the ship was listing heavily to the port side, and the first thing we noticed after getting up on deck was that our life rafts were blown away in that particular place, but after looking around, we saw the others were all in good shape, so we all got by one, but then we had to worry about life jackets. Some of us, including myself, didn’t have time to get ours on because they were in the hole by our be d s . Me an d Joe

C e t e ra ( w h o l iv e s o n 10 5th an d V in c enn e s ) went all over the ship looking for life jackets. He found one but I didn’t. I gave up and decided to go to the raft. When we got back there was just a handful of fellas at this particular raf t. Earlier there had been an awful crowd, but we found out later that they were all scared that this would be too many on this raft, so they left and went to the rafts on different parts of the ship. The next thing was to get the raft loose from the rack and let them down into the water, and you was supposed to just have to knock a certain pin out to make them loose, but the “great Merchant Marine” had tied them all down with rope for a storm we were supposed to run into earlier, but they forgot to take em loose again. To be continued… Marjorie Alice DeVries is a f reela nce w r iter devoted to sha ring t he priceless treasure of war letters, each one a unique w indow into a life that once was. KEVIN BRADLEY One flawed system... I want a refund. I needed to re-new my license plates and was thinking what a scam it is to charge us for updated plates, or a sticker as it may be, every year. We a lready pay income taxes, property taxes, sales ta xes, ta xes on interest and dividends, paid to us by cor porat ions wh ich pay corporate taxes, and we pay taxes on any other source of income f rom money that has already been taxed. We pay for our plates when we purchase our vehicles and we pay tax every time we fill them up, so why must we also pay to re-new our plates ever y yea r w it h money t hat ha s a l ready been taxed by income tax? It s e e m s t h a t o u r g reedy pol it ic ia n s a re incapable of ba la ncing a bud get a nd m a k i ng due with the money they already have coming in, so they assume that it is okay to raise ta xes and ta ke more money f rom t heir constituents. It is not okay. How about if we enact “The law of Third Grade Economics” which states t hat you ca n not spend more money than y ou m a k e . A n y t h i r d g rader k nows t hat you make so much money, you spend some and you save some. If politicians want to spend more money, they should go out and get second jobs like everyone else has to. I have recently heard an interview with Wisconsin Governor Scott Wa l k er. W hen Wa l k er took office, Wisconsin’s f inances were in a
shambles. Walker made some tough choices and deep spending cuts which were not popular at first. Elected in 2010, sworn in, in 2011, Walker’s policies have t u r ned t he st ate around. Wisconsin now has a cash surplus which Governor Wa lker wants to give back to the people. He says, “After all, it’s their money.” I’m not trying to make a political endorsement here. In researching the Gover nor, I discovered some policies I may not ag ree w it h. W hat I a m saying is that he enacted “The Law of Third Grade E c o n o m i c s ”, a n d i t worked. More politicians should be brave enough to follow t his policy of common sense. Tomor row ’s leader s w i l l have a d i f f icu lt t i me because of t he m isma nagement a nd m a n i pu l a t ion of p a s t a nd cu r rent elected officials. As voters all we can do is try and choose t he best ca ndidates of fered. Unfor tunately, once in of f ice, most of them seem to push their own agendas and forget about those who elected t hem . Pol it ic i a n s a nd their constituents must embolden themselves to making difficult decisions ne c e s s a r y to i mpr ov e t he st ate of ou r g reat nation. It would be sad to witness America falling f rom g reat ness due to irresponsibility and greed of ruling bad seeds. Questions or comments may be sent to kevinbradley@columnist. com. Good luck, K.B.

Positive Reinforcement ARLO KALLEMEYN A s a n elect ion is coming up, many ca ndidates a re look ing for your vote. When and if t hey get elected, t he real hard work will begin - especia l ly t hose who get elected in Illinois. In Il l i nois t here a re huge challenges. The biggest in my opinion is not having enoug h money to keep all the promises made to just about every Illinois resident. Those elected may not have gotten us into this mess, but their job is to get us out. Here are some quotes for the newly elected officials as they do the hard work that we elected them to do. “T h i n k i ng w i l l not overcome fear, but action will.” – W. Clement Stone “ You c a n’t bu i ld a reputation on what you’re going to do.” – Henry Ford “He who has begun is half done. “ – Horace
“Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sa ng except t hose t hat sang best. “ – Henry Van Dyke “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.” – Henry David Thoreau “Each day is a new life. Seize it. Live it.” – David Guy Powers “Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others think is possible. “ – Cadet Maxim “When you choose to live your life on purpose, you w i l l revea l t he purpose of your life. “ – Mike Jones Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of learning from the wise men.

File Homestead Property Tax Deductions Online by Bill Port L a ke C ou nt y Aud itor, Peggy Holinga Katona, has now made it possible to file for Property Tax Deductions w it h ou t c om i n g t o t h e Cou nt y Bu i ld i ng. In t he past, when a homeow ner purchased or refinanced their home, they would require the homeowner to come to the Auditor’s office to file for exemptions. In the past, especially near the year end deadline, property owners might endure standing in line for hours in order to file. I n I nd ia na t here a re a nu mber of proper t y t a x deduc t ion s av a i lable to pr op er t y ow ner s. T he most p opu l a r de duc t ion s for home ow ner s i nc lude Homestead exemptions as well as mortgage, Senior, and blind deductions. In addition, there are other exemptions available for vacant property, model homes, property renovation, and more, so it pays to check the list to see if you or your property qualifies. Residents of Lake County Indiana now have the option to file for homestead and mortgage deductions online, or by mail. This service is available through the county
government website at www.lakecountyin. org On t he Cou nt y website t here is a prominent link labeled “ File Property Tax Deductions ” at the top of the page. There you can complete the forms and file for your deduction. On the website there is a short video that explains the process. To file on line, you will be charged a $5.50 convenience fee, and will be required to have a driver’s license, a credit card, and a valid email address (you need this for confirmation, approval and receipt). Email notifications will be sent to the applicants when approved. As always, it is wise to save the confirmation of filing. Of course, homeowners still have the option to file in person at the county, or they can print the forms from the website and mail them to the auditor’s office at 2292 N Main Street, Crown Point IN 46307. Bill Port and his wife, Rachel Port of RE/ MA X Results have been selling homes in the South Suburbs and Northwest Indiana for over 20 years. Put their marketing and negotiating power to work for you! Links to these instructions, forms, and deductions can also be found on our website at www. RachelPort.com/Homestead 219-613-7527

Sellers Are Buyers DONNA HOLMER I am selling my home and am sure I will be able to get a mortgage for my next house. My Realtor tells me that I need to get a mortgage pre-approval before I can make an offer on the house of my dreams. What’s that all about? After all, I have a mortgage and I pay it on time. I should have no problem getting another mortgage, right? Carol – Dyer This is a great question! All sellers shou ld get a mor tgage pre-approva l before listing their home or trying to sell it themselves. Just think about it . . . your mortgage was based on information and credit from a while ago, right? If your income has changed, or your credit has changed – chances are your ability to get another mortgage has changed too. Now think about this . . . what if you were to sell your home then try to get a mortgage and find out that you are not able to get a new mortgage! What would you do? You would have to rent or live with
relatives, right? This happens more often than you realize. Your approval is based not only on credit and income, but also on cash to close. Is all of your down payment on the new home coming from the sale of your home? Do you even have an idea of how much that will be? Will you have to add to the proceeds from the sale of your home? Do you have additional funds to do so? Do yourself a favor - - schedule an appointment today with a lender to be sure you are able to sell and move on to the next home. If you’d like a free copy of my Home Buyers Booklet, send me an email at Donna.Holmer@TheDRMC.com . Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We accepted an offer on our home. We feel the buyer got the best of the deal. Now, after the home inspection, they are asking for us to repair a light switch, repair an outlet with reverse polarity and replace a cracked ceramic tile piece in the kitchen. We feel we have come down enough in price and we do not want to do anything. What is your opinion? Answer: Back when it was a seller’s market, buyers wouldn’t dare ask for minor issues in fear the seller would move on to the next buyer. Unfortunately, in most areas, it is a buyer’s market and most buyers feel they are in control of the situation. There are no perfect homes, but many buyers are not aware of this, so they feel that many, if not all of the inspection issues should be fixed. Most real estate contracts state that only safety and major issues are part of the home inspection contingency. If this inspection request really bothers you, then consult with your
attorney on your options or just tell the buyers no and your reason. If the buyers want the home badly enough they will agree and drop their request for repairs. You asked my opinion. I’d f i x t he reverse polarity since it is a safety issue. I would also fix the other minor items and be thankful nothing more costly was found in the home inspection. The objective was to sell your home and move on to the next part of your life. Fix the minor items and the objective will be accomplished. Immersed In His Love ANNA M. CAISON As I sit here pondering what God wou ld have me w r ite t his week I’m r em i nde d of t he v a r iou s pa s tor s / leaders I’ve served under. Sometimes well intentioned leaders make loving and serving the Lord so hard. Ever y year the congregation was bombarded w it h numerous book s to study t hat teach different methods and strategies for engaging the church in ministry. A majority of the materials brought out good points, especially those that focused on the life and ministry of Jesus, the apostles, and the early church. After each study we increased in busyness, but remained unproductive, unfruitful, tired and burned out. Serving God is easy, that is, once you grasp the one key step that’s missing from the teachings we’ve engaged in. The first step toward productive and fruitful ministry is this: LOVING GOD. If we (the church) are to excel in serving God we MUST love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind. And in order to love God like that, we must first be able to comprehend His love for us. My transition from being busy for the Lord to becoming a servant that seeks after the heart of God happened when by the Holy Spirit I began to understand the vastness of God’s love for me (Ephesians

I’ve discovered I can trust Him with my life because He’s got my back no matter what I’m facing. His love for me is greater than the love of parents, siblings and friends. And no one can whisper anything in His ear against me that would cause Him to stop loving me. Because His love for me is always before me, I can love Him with all my heart, soul and mind. And because I desire to do those things that please Him, He reveals His heart to me; showing me where to go, who to minister His love to, and how to carry out His work. C H I C AG O F E D C H E I F G I V E S C A I C ECONOMIC OUTLOOK: If you were happy last year with the economy, next year should be more of the same. So says William Strauss, senior economist and economic advisor for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The economy has improved moderately in the past year but Strauss and his cohorts at the Fed were disappointed that it did not go far enough. Dubbing the nation’s economy “both good and bad,” he translated for the noneconomists in the Calumet Area Industrial Commission audience what he meant by that. “The US economy is the strongest in the world,” he noted, however, as regards manufacturing, a key interest with those at CAIC, “we produced goods but we didn’t sell them. We sold to other countries who sold them which adds marginally to our national bottom line.” His next issue was housing, a real interest to this reporter who sells property for Coldwell Banker: “There are too many homes related to current demands and too many empty storefronts. Prices bottomed out last year and overall since the bust in 2008 prices fell 40% or back to prices 15 years ago.” Ouch! “We are in for a gradual recovery in housing,” was Strauss’ prediction. Now that covers lots of ground and in lots of neighborhoods, so some reading this will note that their particular area is going great guns, whereas others are malingering. “Location, Location, Location!” has been the housing battle cry since forever. Strauss does not see the housing market coming back until 2016 “before it balances out,” as he said. Strauss also said that unemployment would continue to be troublesome until 2016. Again, it all depends upon which city you live in and what kind of education you have to determine your lifestyle and eventual employment history. Strauss’ talk about the economy was not all good nor all bad, but, as he said at first, we can take comfort in the fact that “The US economy is the strongest in the world!” For more on our economy go to www.chicagofed.org or www. federalreserve.gov Pictured here are CAIC Executive Director Ted Stalnos and William Strauss at the lectern at Ridge Country Club, Chicago, Il *** BOOK SIGNING FOR ‘ONCE UPON A TIME IN SOUTH CHICAGO’ SET FOR: Saturday March 15, 2014 at the Paul Henry Art Gallery, (the old Mueller’s Hardware store) just off the corner of Sibley and Hohman in ‘downtown’ Hammond. Author is Lansing writer Rob Stanley who grew up in and around South Chicago/East Side and has written a charming memoire of his days in the ‘hood’ though no one called it that ‘back in the day.’ The signing will take place between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and books ($15 per copy) will be available for purchase. Rob, in his 60’s and a Vietnam veteran has a great recollection of his days as a youth and his recall of hearing his father, who was a passionate community advocate for many years, talk about the ‘old days.’ *** KRISTINA AND STEVEN SET WEDDING DATE FOR JULY 23RD, 2014: Wedding bells are going to ring out for Kristina Lococo and Steven Bullion of Hammond. The reception will take place at Wicker Park in Munster. The couple are the children of Cassandra Stagner and Steven Lococo ( Kristina) and Sherie Patrick (Steve). Kristina works at Motive Parts in Highland (the only girl in the parts store and truly knows her inventory) and Steve is a stay at home Dad to Kodey Bullion, and Trent and Jaiden Lococo. Reader Advisory: The National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the above classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer employment but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it is illegal to request any money before delivering its service.
