Illinois Law Now!
Question: What steps can I take to prevent becoming a victim of identity theft? Answer: Identity theft, said to be one of the fastest-growing crimes in the U.S., happens when a person obtains the personal information of another, such as a Social Security number or banking information, and uses it for their own personal gain. To prevent becoming a victim, check each bank and credit card statement for unauthorized purchases. Shred documents that have sensitive, personal information. Don’t share your phone number or birth date on your social media sites. Keep your computer’s software up to date, and lock your smart phone’s screen with a password. If you suspect you’re the victim of identity theft, contact the organization involved such as a bank or credit card company, and file a police report. Also, place a fraud alert on your credit reports by contacting one of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian or TransUnion, which, in turn, will notify the other two.
