Do you have the cutest photo of your pet? If so, it’s time to show your pet’s star quality! The Humane Society Calumet Area is hosting their annual pet photo calendar contest. Your $25 entry fees guarantees your pet a spot in the 2013 color calendar and includes a copy of the calendar. Votes can be submitted at the shelter and on our website, www.hscalumet. org/calendarcontest.asp. The top 13 photos that receive the most public votes during the weeks of September 1st-14th, will have a “Pet of the Month” placement. Calendars will be sold for $15 and all proceeds of the contest and the calendars will benefit the shelter. Entries must be submitted by August 29th. Illinois Law Now!

Question: I was contacted by a debt collector about a payment I do not owe. What are my options? Answer: Old debt is often poorly documented, leading debt collectors to contact the wrong person. To fight a potential lawsuit, send a letter by certified mail to the collector, explaining it is not your debt and that they should stop contacting you. If a lawsuit is filed against you, take action. If you can prove it’s not your debt, it’s likely the case will be dismissed. Question: I just turned 62 and am considering a reverse mortgage. Will I still need to pay property taxes and homeowners insurance? Answer: Yes, though a surprising number of reverse mortgage borrowers don’t believe that is the case, according to the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association. The number of consumers applying for reverse mortgages at their first opportunity, which is age 62, has increased dramatically as a way to borrow money against one’s home. But it’s a complex type of loan that should be considered carefully. A lawyer can help you navigate the complexities of a reverse mortgage. Question: What steps has Illinois taken to close the loophole that allows family members to help convicted criminals flee the country? Answer: Under a new state law which goes into effect January 1, 2013, criminal charges can be filed against a fugitive’s spouse, parent or other close relatives age 18 and over, who help him or her avoid prosecution. Previously, Illinois was one of only 14 states that exempted close relatives from this type of conduct. Violators face prison terms of one to three years and a fine of $25,000. Keep the Library Covered... Quilt

The Friends of the Hammond Public Library are raising funds and awareness by asking the public to “Keep the Library Covered… Help Make a Quilt.” During a 10-day “quilting bee” from Aug. 15 to Aug. 25, quilt squares made from heavy paper will be available at the library’s Circulation Desk for a donation of $1 or more. Donors will sign their name to the quilt squares. Two opportunities allow donors to decorate their own squares: either Tues., Aug. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m.; or on Sat., Aug. 25 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the library, 564 State St. All materials for assembling and decorating the paper quilt are being donated by The Golden Studio. Volunteers and students from Books, Brushes & Bands for Education (BBB4E) will be available to decorate squares already purchased, and to assist those who wish to decorate their own squares. The squares then will be assembled into a quilt, to be displayed at a BBB4E multimedia exhibit during the month of September at the Hammond Arts Center, 5832 Hohman Ave. The show opening is Fri., Sept. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m., at which information about the library and its Friends group will be available. Plans are for the quilt to be exhibited in different venues. Information is with the Library at (219) 931-5100, Ext. 310.
