Question: I’m thinking about “blowing the whistle” against my employer for actions that I believe are unlawful. What should I know? Answer: Anyone who witnesses corporate or government wrongdoing can file a so-called whistleblower lawsuit to hold the party accountable for violating a law or regulation. Whistleblowers often receive a portion of the settlement funds and are protected against wrongful termination. In 2008, the Illinois Whistleblower Reward and Protection Act expanded the original law to cover all levels of state government. Since the act was strengthened, a whistleblower can get up to 30% of the amount recovered as a reward upon completion of a successful whistleblower suit. A lawyer can help you determine if you have a case. Question: I store a lot of personal information on my computer. How can I protect myself against identity theft? Answer: Identity thieves are masters at getting your personal information online and using it to open bank or charge accounts or in other ways to fatten their wallets. To help avoid identity theft, keep passwords off your computer and use a different one for each site when required. Make sure the passwords you use aren’t obvious ones like a consecutive string of numbers. Be sure to have good, updated antivirus software and a personal firewall. Finally, make sure to get a copy of your credit report every year and review it for any inaccuracies. Report any that you find to help ensure you maintain a good credit record. Question: What are some of the personal protections afforded in an Order of Protection? Answer: An Order of Protection is a court order which places restrictions on someone who has abused a family or household member. Among its protections, an order can: prohibit the abuser from continuing threats or abuse; order the abuser out of a shared home; order the abuser to stay away from you and others named in the order; and keep the abuser from taking or hiding the children. The order may also require the abuser to attend counseling and turn over any weapons to local law enforcement officers. For more information about Illinois law, visit www. illinoislawyerfinder.com. Building Business Success with Emotional Intelligence
The Business & Career Institute of South Suburban College will host another course in their Breakfast with BCI Workshop Series titled Building Business Success with Emotional Intelligence, facilitated by Alexandra Glumac, Client Solution Specialist, on Tuesday, September 11th at SSC’s University & College Center in Oak Forest. Check-in will begin at 8:15 a.m. with the workshop to follow from 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Success in business depends on our ability to understand and effectively manage emotions, in others and ourselves. It is not enough to have the technical skills to do our jobs well; it is just as important to possess the necessary interpersonal skills in order to be effective. Emotional Intelligence (EI), loosely defined, is one’s ability to use emotions intelligently and appropriately in different situations. It is becoming the “new yardstick” by which employees are being evaluated. In this workshop, participants will learn the Four Functions of EI, the Five Competencies of EI, and several proven strategies to promote and strengthen EI. The cost for “Building Business Success with Emotional Intelligence” is $15 per person, or $10 per person if 3 or more individuals from the same company attend. Advanced Registration is required by September 7th. For more information or to register, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2346 or email aglumac@ssc.edu. The University & College Center is located at 16333 S. Kilbourn Avenue, Oak Forest, IL.
