What’s Your Big Idea? KEVIN BRADLEY “Find the right topic, and a child doesn’t even realize they are reading,” says former teacher Karen Hutchinson; now a sales representative for Usborne Books, a U.K. based publisher of books meant to aide in developing kids’ reading habits by finding creative ways to spark their minds through educational books featuring subjects the individual child is already passionate about. Usborne doesn’t just subject children to onesize-fits-all type education; they have educational books in hundreds of subjects, so the individual child can choose whatever uniquely interests them. They currently hold over 1400 titles and add about 40 annually. Currently a resident of St. John, Indiana; Karen has had a life-long love of reading herself. She delights in seeing kids choose a book that they are really excited about, or helping an adult choose the perfect book for a child. Karen can be found at the St. John Farmer’s Market on Sunday, or reached at 219-365-2755, or kkhutch@ sbcglobal.net. Books may be ordered and program information found at wwwubah.com/E1554. Karen can help your school, library or organization host a Book Fair, Matching Grant Program, Fundraising Program, or Reading Incentive Program. In the Book Fair, schools can earn $250 worth of free books with sales of $500. “Many

of our books are also popular as supplemental for homeschooling moms because they are educational.” Karen says, “When we have our yearly get together, (company founder) Peter (Usborne) comes from the United Kingdom and explains how the books are put together to engage a child, spark their interest and make them think.” “Children are clever… They are our equals. We shouldn’t talk down to them, but look across at them. Books should be friendly, and as much like a magnet as possible. They should be reliable and accurate, stylish and artistic, accessible, and also surprising and provocative. Books should promote wondering. They should be better than good.”- Peter Usborne Karen’s favorite words of wisdom come from Proverbs 3:5-6…”Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on to your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will direct your paths.” A child’s mind is yet uncorrupted. Trust that God has given them everything they need to find their path, but help them along with a good book to expand their growing need for knowledge, to help them develop their potential for greatness.
