Question: What are the requirements in Illinois for a disabled driver to be exempt from feeding a parking meter? Answer: Persons with permanent disabilities that cause difficulty in accessing a parking meter will be eligible for a meter-exempt permanent placard. The placard allows the holder to park in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities, and exempts him or her from parking meter fees and time limitations at meters that exceed a 30-minute time limit. To be eligible, the person with the disability must have a valid Illinois driver’s license, and a physician’s certification that the person meets the criteria. The new law goes into effect January 1, 2014. Question: I have a great idea for a new business and need significant capital to get it going, but I do not have personal connections to investors. Can I use crowdfunding sites on the Internet to get equity investing? Answer: A change in federal law now allows entrepreneurs who want to finance their start-ups through equity investing (or offering shares of stock) to make the request on Internet sites without having to register shares of their company for public trading. The new law is part of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, which enables businesses to raise up to $1 million a year online.

Question: A friend of mine had her identity stolen from someone who claimed to be calling about jury duty. What should people know to prevent this type of fraud from happening to them? Answer: Jury duty fraud typically consists of scammers calling people and telling them that because they failed to report for jury duty, there is a warrant out for their arrest. When the victim replies that they never received such a notice, the scammer will ask for some information for “verification purposes,” like a Social Security number or even a credit card number. Unfortunately, many victims willingly provide this information. Keep in mind that actual court officers never ask for confidential information over the phone. But while the need for blood is constant, the supply of blood sometimes isn’t. The Art & Design Department of Sout h Subu rba n Col lege (SSC ) is pleased to present two exhibitions in galleries on the college’s Main Campus in South Holland. First, Mark Holmes is exhibiting “Mov e s a nd Me a s u r e s” t h r ou g h Tuesday, November 19th in the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery with a closing reception on November 19th at 1:00 p.m. “Moves and Measures” features 18 objects that represent four bodies of work. Holmes explores similar visual themes through the distinct groups, giving the viewer insight into his sculptural oeuvre. He constructs different spaces with color, surface, planes and edges that invite the audience to witness perceptual a mbig u it ies col lid ing w it h tact i le realities. Mark Holmes holds a BA from Hope College, and an MFA in sculpture from Yale University. He currently chairs the Department of Art and Art History at Knox College, where he has taught since 2004.

Hammond’s Northlake Auto Recyclers Achieves Gold Award Nort hla ke Auto Recyclers in Ha mmond, Ind., has earned its third Indiana Clean Yard-Gold Level award for auto salvage yards. Northlake Auto Recyclers was the first salvage yard in Northern Indiana to go the extra mile to earn the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s (IDEM’s) Indiana Clean Yard-Gold Level award in 2009. Theresa Bordenkecher, IDEM’s section chief over the Indiana Clean Yard program, awarded Marty Hollingshead, owner, with a certificate on Thursday at the facility at 105 Industrial Road, Hammond, Ind. “Since 2009, Northlake Auto Recyclers have been leading the industry down a better path,” said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. “We are proud to recognize them for their environmental leadership. They have also actively encouraged other members of the auto salvage industry to participate in the program. This is a great example of how we can work with a particular business sector and help them find ways to improve their processes while protecting Hoosiers and our environment.” Sa lvage ya rds receive a nd store w recked vehicles containing antifreeze, gasoline, oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, batteries, mercury switches and tires. If not managed properly, wrecked vehicles stockpiled in salvage yards can pose an environmental threat. IDEM is committed to helping auto salvage recyclers ensure environmental protection. IDEM launched its current initiative for auto salvage facilities in 2007 with a State Innovative Grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. IDEM staff members have since conducted hundreds of inspections around the state to help steer Indiana’s 650-plus auto salvage recyclers toward better environmental stewardship and encourage their compliance. St. John & Dyer Lions Clubs Invite Community to Open House The St. John and Dyer Lions Clubs will be hosting an information Open House on Wednesday, November 20th for individuals and families who want to learn more about the Lions and their work in the community. I’ve been thinking, what does it mean to take up your cross and follow Jesus? If we were to look at Jesus through the eyes of the religious leaders of His day we’d write Him off as a heretic too! He said things like, “If you seen me, you’ve seen the Father” “I do only those things that I see my Father do.” “My judgment is not my own but of my Father who sent me.” “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have no part of me.” “Before Abraham was born, I Am.” That last statement alone made the people pick up stones to throw at Him. But if Jesus had come during our time, wouldn’t we have treated Him the same way? His style of ministry is as foreign to the religious culture of today as it was over 2000 years ago. We’d call him an unstable (He ministered to and befriended the social outcasts), delusional (God talked with Him), burned out preacher (condemned the w icked practices of the religious leaders) who refused to conform to the established religious culture when it conf licted with God’s Word. Their minds were melded as one, thus cascading a cla i r voya nt message, momentarily, across the country. Gene was a W W II veteran and local businessman. For thirty years (from about 1961 to his passing in 1991) he owned and operated Deno’s Jewelr y at 18053 To r r e n c e A v e n u e i n Lansing, Illinois. Lisa grew up in Chicago, but she and her sister spent much t i me at Gr a nd f at her ’s store, her first job, where customers m ig ht come in to find them playing pra n k s on each ot her. Customers also noticed they would affectionately jokingly call each other “Ding”, short for ding-aling. That was part of their fun. Lisa learned many v a luable le s son s f rom her grandfather, such as: Always make time to have fun; even mundane tasks ca n be made f u n; a nd memories are a precious gift. A f ter Gra nd fat her passed away, Lisa began t a k i n g not e s , w r it i n g dow n in notebook s chronicling all the silly, f un t imes t hey had together. On Sunday, November 3, 2013, Pregnancy Aid South Suburbs (PASS) held an Open House a nd R ibbon Cutt ing Ceremony, celebrating the numerous improvements, remodeling and brand new ultrasound machine. PASS in Sout h Holland f irst opened it’s doors on November 3, 1991, ser v ing clients in t he communit y a nd surrounding areas for the past 21 years. PASS has Centers in Lansing and Tinley Park as well and until this past October, was not able to offer limited ultrasounds to their numerous clients. PASS was able

to raise enough funds to purchase the machine through generous donations from individuals, churches and businesses. The Open House encouraged numerous individuals to come and celebrate, with over 40 in attendance. I didn’t know what to ex pect f rom t his book. T he descr ipt ion ma kes it s ou nd l i k e a p o s tapoc a l y pt ic book , but I’m sure if I’d classify it as such. It pretends to be a dystopian novel, but once the curtains are pulled back, it’s really more like a realistic fiction thriller. Because I d id n’t rea l ly know what to expect from this book, I felt like I was on a ride. Bodeen kept throwing new twists and turns as the book went along that you wouldn’t expect. We fol low t he stor y of Eli who loses his twin brother at the beginning of the book. The beginning is very emotional. Bodeen suc c e s sf u l l y de sc r ibe s Eli’s feelings as he tries to dea l w it h his f uture life without his twin. It’s even worse for Eli with the development of his sisters who both develop horrible persona lit y t ra its a f ter being locked up in t he compound. I don’t want to let out the big secret at t he end because it’s much better to uncover it yourself. Bodeen does not take the easy route with any of the characters and plot twists. The bad things a re bad ; t he su r pr ises leave your heart pounding.

Water RILEY ROGERS brain is about 75 percent water? For us, water is often taken for granted. Clean drinking water is always within reach. The faucet is turned on and clean water flows – both hot and cold. Nevertheless, t h i s i s not t he c a se for e ver yone. Large parts of our world survive with insufficient drinking water. Children can’t go to school because they have to walk for hours so as to fetch the daily supply of water. Crops can’t grow because there simply is no water. This results in poverty and famine. We a re cer ta i n ly blessed i n t he Chicagoland area to have fresh clean water whenever we turn on our faucets. During the Thanksgiving season, let’s all remember to give thanks for fresh water for our families!

Water - it is essential to life. We need water to drink, to clean, and to play in. It won’t come as a surprise to you that water is so essential for our existence. Most of us take it for granted. But have you ever taken a moment to stop and think just how important water is to you? For the human body, water is truly a vital resource. You can go weeks without food but only 5-7 days without water. When the water in your body is reduced by just 1 percent, you become thirsty. At 5 percent, muscle strength and endurance declines significantly and you become hot and tired. When the loss reaches 10 percent, delirium and blurred vision occur. There is no more important nutrient for our bodies than water. No other substance is as widely involved in the processes and make up of the body. Our bodies are about made up of 60 percent water. can’t—you’re right.” Pride goes before the fall. Excessive pride over success can cause one to lose sight of what brought success in the first place; t he success it sel f may become an entitlement. And, as always, so does the Governor, Pat Quinn and other elected officials of the Chicago Southland, such as South Holland Mayor Don DeGraff along with yours truly, enjoying the annual dinner. The elected officials were there to meet and greet their constituency and to remind everyone to vote on Tuesday, March 18, 2014. The handsome servers who dished up the pasta, meatballs, salad and shredded cheese were among the local high school athletes. The camaraderie was evident as was the popularity of the host who wears his traditional yellow rosebud in his lapel. When Governor Pat Quinn took to the podium to address those present, a cheer went up as he acknowledged the “Mighty Thornton Township.” giving Supervisor Zuccarelli a nod to his leadership and mentoring skills. VETERAN RUNS INTO HARD TIMES: Pictured here is 57 year old Tim Murga of Whiting. He was in the US Army from 1979 through1983 and currently belongs to the American Legion in Whiting. Tim has taken to ‘begging’ on a corner of Avenue O and Brainard in Hegewisch/Burnham neighborhoods, across from Burger King. On good days motorists stop and hand him a $5 or bring him a burger from Burger King. He is discouraged and despondent most of the time and admits that his disability check barely covers his rent with little left over for food. “It’s pretty hard to live this way,” he relates. “The guys I meet at the VFW’s or American Legions all seem to be in good financial shape or on good pensions or have money in the bank. I don’t have any of that. Maybe I didn’t plan good, but all I know is it’s very hard now to make it.” Tim said he ‘begs’ in Hegewisch/Burnham and not Whiting because he is “embarrassed, so close to home.
