SSC Opens Late Spring Class Registration for Free High School Equivalency and English as a Second Language Courses The South Suburban College (SSC) Adult Education Department has extended the enrollment period for its free High School Equivalency (HSE/GED) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. The late spring session is scheduled from April 18 through June 16, 2022. Most of the Adult Education programs are offered both full-time and part-time at the Main Campus in South Holland or at the Oak Forest Center. There are daytime, nighttime and online course options available.

Many adults choose to expand their skills and pursue a high school education through the HSE/GED program. This program will develop the skills required to pass the High School Equivalency exams. HSE for ESL is also available for students who plan to take the HSE/GED exam in English. The ESL program allows non-native students the ability to improve their English skills from beginning to advanced levels. All courses are offered free of charge.

Poll Workers needed in suburban Cook County For June 28 Gubernatorial Primary Election Suburban voters can do their part for local democracy and earn some cash in the process by registering to serve as an Election Judge for the Cook County Clerk’s Office in the June 28, 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Election.

Clerk Karen A. Yarbrough is encouraging all residents to consider serving as an Election Judge or Polling Place Technician to work on Election Day. The Clerk’s Office administers elections in all Cook County suburbs and has 1,430 precincts that will require staffing with multiple Election Judges. Election Judges are paid $200 and Polling Place Technicians $365 and the Clerk’s Office provides training for both positions.

The Clerk’s Office is also putting out a call to encourage high school and college students to consider serving as judges as well as residents who are bilingual.

“Our Judges are the gatekeepers for election operations and their work is critically important to keeping election day operations running smoothly,” said Yarbrough. “They are also the unsung heroes of our democratic process who provide a vital public service to voters on Election Day.” The two judge positions available include: • Election Judge: These judges greet voters, sign them in and

work together to ensure the polling place is running smoothly and voters are properly served. This position earns $200.

Election Judges must be a registered Cook County voter or an eligible college or high school student (16 or older). The Clerk’s office is also in need of bilingual Election Judges in many precincts with high concentrations of Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Tagalog, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Gujarati, Urdu, and Arabic-speaking voters who are not proficient in English and may need special assistance at the polls.

Use Your Financial Strategy like GPS SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN When you’re driving these days, it’s pretty hard to get lost because your smartphone’s Global Positioning System (GPS) can get you just about anywhere. And as an investor, you can have a similar experience by employing another directional tool – a personalized financial strategy.

Let’s look at the parallels between your GPS and this type of strategy.

To begin with, your GPS pinpoints your exact location at the start of your trip – in other words, it tells you where you are. And when you create a financial strategy, your first step is to evaluate your current situation by answering these types of questions: What are your assets? How much do you earn? How much do you owe? How much are you contributing to your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement accounts? Once you’ve got a clear picture of your finances, you’ll be ready to begin your journey toward your long-term goals.

Once your GPS has identified your starting point, it will then show you where you want to go and the routes to help you get there.

And it’s the same with your financial strategy – you want it to help lead you to a particular place in your life. In fact, a well-designed strategy can show you the steps you need to take to help reach more than one destination – to a place where you can send your children to college, a place where you can retire comfortably, a place where you can leave the type of legacy you want, and so on.

Here’s another element of your GPS that applies to your financial strategy – the warnings. You’re certainly familiar with those thick red lines your GPS shows to indicate traffic slowdowns ahead. And while they’re annoying, they’re also useful in cautioning

you that you may arrive at your destination later than you had originally planned. Your financial strategy can also express “warnings” about events that could hinder you from reaching your goals. These obstacles might include an illness or disability that could keep you out of work for a while, or the need for some type of long-term care, such as a nursing home stay or the services of a home health aide. Your financial strategy can not only identify these threats, but with the guidance of a financial professional, suggest potential solutions.

In addition to providing warnings about things such as heavy traffic and road construction, your GPS can change your route if you miss a turn or if you decide, for whatever reason, to go a slightly different way. Your financial strategy can also show you alternatives, if it’s comprehensive and overseen by a financial professional, who, using specialized software, can create hypotheticals – illustrations that provide alternative outcomes for different steps, such as retiring at various ages, investing different amounts each year or earning different rates of return. These hypotheticals can be quite helpful to you as your chart your course toward your goals, especially if you need to change your plans along the way.

Your GPS and your financial strategy are two great tools for helping get you where you want to go.

Sheriff Dart Warns Public of Phone Scam Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is alerting the public to a recent phone scam in which the caller claimed to be an employee of the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and called from a number disguised to appear as though it was from the Sheriff’s Office.

During these calls, the scammer either stated the call was related to a “legal matter,” that the individual “missed jury duty,” or that the individual would go to jail if they did not turn themselves in to police custody. The scammer utilized a “spoofing app,” which is a mobile app used to create fake calls and text messages.

The caller also knew and used the potential victims’ names, likely to sound more legitimate in order to obtain sensitive personal information or money.

Please exercise caution if you receive this call

or one similar to it. The Sheriff’s Office does not make such notifications by phone nor does the office call to solicit money.

The Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips to avoid becoming a victim of a phone scam: • If you believe a call is suspicious, immediately hang up.

• Never give personal information such as Social Security numbers or bank account numbers over the phone.

• If a caller claims to be from a specific public agency, hang up and call that agency directly to determine whether there is a legitimate reason to contact you. Do not use any phone number given to you by the caller.

Sheriff’s Police, Homeland Security Investigations Takedown Brothel Operation A joint investigation by Cook County Sheriff’s Police Special Victims Unit and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security of a residential brothel operation led to felony charges against two men for promoting prostitution, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

Sheriff’s Police and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a search warrant on March 4 at an apartment in the 4800 block of West Roscoe Street in Chicago where investigators had learned patrons exchanged money for sex.

During the execution of the search warrant, Sheriff’s Police investigators found items consistent with the operation of a brothel including financial items and documents. Investigators also recovered two guns including a Glock with a switch that made that firearm fully automatic.

Two women were recovered from the location. Both victims were offered services from the Sheriff’s Police victim advocate specialists, who were on scene.

Also found in the apartment was 22-year-old Joseangel Villagran, who investigators learned was the brothel’s doorman. Villagran, who lived in the apartment, was charged with promoting prostitution and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Both are Class 4 felonies.

Investigators learned that 34-year-old Antionio Sanchez Cortes, of the 700 block of South Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville, was the brothel’s operator. He was taken into custody after a traffic stop in Libertyville. Sanchez Cortes had in his possession the phone used to operate the brothel. He was charged with promoting prostitution.

The pair attended bond hearings on March 5 at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

Villagran’s bond was set at $30,000-D and Sanchez Cortez’s bond was set at $20,000-D. The public is reminded that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.

JOSH BOOTSMA A friend of mine in high school felt Jesus was an excellent example of a good person. He did not believe, however, that Jesus was the Son of God, or the only way to salvation through His death and resurrection.

Perhaps you’re in the same spot today: ready to accept Jesus as teacher and moral example, but not as God and Savior. Here’s the truth: if Jesus is only a good teacher and a good person, then he’s actually neither of those things.

A good teacher and a good person would tell the truth, right? Jesus says in John chapter 10, “I and the Father are one.” In John 14, He says, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” In Mark 14:61, we read, “The high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?’ And Jesus said, ‘I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.’”

In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

If Jesus is not God, then he’s a false teacher. If he’s not the all-powerful Son of the Almighty, then he’s not a good person, because a good person wouldn’t lie about being the Son of God! If Jesus isn’t the only way to salvation, he’s a liar.

You see how we’re left with two options: either Jesus is a manipulative liar who has led billions of people astray throughout history, or He’s actually the Son of God, who gave His life to save His people.

If Jesus is only currently your teacher and example, I encourage you to take the next step, truly digest his teaching, follow his example, and make Him your Savior and Lord.

Excel Center Accepting Enrollment Applications The Excel Center, a free public high school for adults, is currently accepting Enrollment Applications for Term 4 of the 2021-2022 School Year.

Kane was experienced by everyone who was at her celebration at the Lansing American Legion Post 697 on Saturday. From her family and friends and those of her beloved husband Jim Kane. Marie died in January leaving a hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved her--most of all her-- “Jimmy.”

Congress Wants To Rob Medicare Again!

WOODROW WILCOX On January 31, 2022, I found an article that is important to all seniors on Medicare.

It was written by James Martin and Saul Anuzis and originally published on January 4, 2022. You can find it at this link: https://www.60plus.org/raiding-medicarewont-produce-postal-reform/ The United States Postal Service needs to balance its books. So, the Postal Service Reform Act was introduced to shift retired employees and future retirees of the postal service from the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) to Medicare.

This would help the postal service to balance its books but it would shift millions of postal worker retirees into the Medicare system. It would reduce costs for the postal service but increase costs enormously on the Medicare system.

The “baby boomer” generation is still entering the Social Security and Medicare systems. Adding millions of postal retirees to the Medicare system drains funds in the Medicare system rather than the postal system’s FEHBP program. It does not solve any financial problem. But it adds more financial problem to the Medicare system.

Robbing Medicare to pay for something else is an old trick. In the past, the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) reduced funding for Medicare benefits by over $716 billion in order to fund Obamacare.

Don’t believe me? Check the two-year study of Obamacare that was published by the Congressional Budget Office in July 2012.

In order to offset the financial loss to Medicare caused by Obamacare, the federal government started pushing to promote Medicare Advantage. That costs the federal government less because of all the co-pays, deductions, exclusions, and out-of-network charges which shift health care costs back onto seniors.

Without consulting our agency, one of our clients on Medicare with a Medicare supplement switched to a Medicare Advantage plan. Then, he went into a hospital. He left the hospital with a bill of over $6,000. He asked me to check the bill and see if I could help him. In the past, I had helped the client to correct errors on a medical bill when he had a Medicare supplement through our agency. I helped him save money then. Sadly, I told him that I could not help him because he switched from the Medicare system to the Medicare Advantage system. The two systems have completely different rules. He was stuck with the $6,000 plus bill that he got with his Medicare Advantage plan.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Thornton Historical Society presents a program Entitled “Watseka” on Mar. 28 Please join the Thornton Historical Society as they present a program on the beautiful and intelligent Watseka, member of the Potawatomi tribe, given by her descendant George Godfrey. Godfrey, a Citizen Potawatomi, lived his childhood on several different reservations. He is President of the Potawatomi Trail of Death Association, a traditional powwow dancer, storyteller and author of several books, including Watchekee (Watseka) Walking in Two Cultures.

Watseka, also known as “Watchekee” was the daughter of respected warrior and leader Shabonna. She was born around 1810 at an “Indian village site” in Illinois presided over by her uncle, Chief Tamin. At 14 or 15 years of age she married Thornton founder Gurdon S. Hubbard. They had a daughter who died in infancy and mutually dissolved the union in 1826. After the Potawatomi signed the 1833 Treaty of Chicago, she was among those who were removed to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1837, but she visited Illinois often.

The program will be held at the Thornton Historical Museum, 114 N. Hunter Street, Thornton, IL on March 28, 2022, at 7:00pm. This program is free of charge and everyone is welcome to attend.

Indiana American Water Helps Educate Homeowners During The Epa’s Fix A Leak Week, March 14-22 Indiana American Water is leveraging the nationwide awareness campaign taking place during the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Fix a Leak Week to advance local water conservation goals as well as provide a savings to homeowners, property owners and businesses in the communities it serves. The annual Fix a Leak Week (March 14-22, 2022) is a national campaign led by the EPA each year that helps raise awareness about leaks and other water issues that contribute to water waste within homes.

“As part of American Water’s commitment to help better serve customers, we utilize Fix a Leak Week to help people understand where and how to spot common problematic leaks to improve home safety and support water efficiency and conservation,” said Indiana American Water President Matt Prine.

According to the EPA, the average U.S. residence loses 10,000 gallons of water per year thanks to seemingly minor leaks. With more than 110 million households in the U.S., this equates to more than one trillion gallons of water lost every year due to leaks in the home.

Moreover, it is estimated that the average homeowner can reduce his or her water bills by 10 percent simply by addressing leaks.

“Many people may not realize that even the smallest leaks can waste thousands of gallons per year,” said Prine. “A leak of just one drip per second from a faucet can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water each year. Fortunately, most common leaks are easily detectable and

correctable.”

Indiana American Water is committed to fixing leaks by replacing or upgrading water infrastructure to provide safe, clean, reliable, and affordable drinking water to customers, investing more than $250 million in infrastructure improvements across the state over the past two years.

Indiana American Water also offers these starter tips for detecting leaks: Watch the water meter and your water bill. If you notice a spike, it might be because of a leak Test your meter. If you suspect you may have a leak, turn all water appliances off, then go check your meter. If it’s still changing, you might have a leak Test your toilet. Leaks can occur in your toilet. Test for one by putting a drop of food coloring into the toilet tank. After 10 minutes, if any color shows up in the bowl, you have a leak Listen. One of the simplest ways to watch out for leaks is to listen for dripping from your faucets or showerheads and running water from your toilet

As a result, expired driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits will remain valid until July 31, 2022, so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during inclement weather. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

White’s office has expanded online renewals for expired driver’s licenses and ID cards and continues to mail letters to eligible customers.

The letter provides driver’s license and ID card holders with a unique PIN needed to renew online instead of visiting a facility and waiting in line. Customers may call 217-785-1424 to confirm their eligibility for online renewal or to obtain their PIN.

Customers who must visit a facility include first-time driver’s license or ID card applicants, first-time REAL ID applicants and drivers ages 75 and older who are required by state law to visit a facility when renewing their license.

White continues to encourage people to conduct other business online at ilsos.gov. In addition to driver’s license and ID card renewals for those who qualify, online services include obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card, ordering a driver record and purchasing license plate stickers.

White noted his office is also extending the expiration dates of Restricted Driving Permits (RDPs) to July 31, 2022 for those that expired on or after December 1, 2021 through July 30, 2022.

As a reminder, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

The 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) was conducted among U.S. middle and high school students during the COVID-19 pandemic and revealed that youth tobacco use remains a serious public health concern. About 2.55 million U.S. middle and high school students reported current (past 30-day) use of a tobacco product in 2021, according to new data released in today’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Because of the implementation of COVID-19 protocols across the country when the 2021 NYTS was conducted (January 18–May 21, 2021), the survey was administered online to allow eligible students to complete the survey at home, school, or somewhere else. While we remain confident in our study results, the reporting of tobacco use might differ by the setting where the survey was completed. Therefore, these results cannot be compared with results from previous NYTS surveys that were primarily conducted on school campuses.

In collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analyzed data from the 2021 NYTS. Among middle and high school students who currently used tobacco products about 1 in 3 (860,000) used at least one type of combustible tobacco product, and about 3 in 10 (740,000) used two or more tobacco products.

As previously reported, e-cigarettes were the most common tobacco product currently used among middle and high school students (2.06 million) in 2021. This was followed by cigarettes (410,000), cigars (380,000), smokeless tobacco (240,000), hookahs (220,000), nicotine pouches (200,000), heated tobacco products (170,000), and pipe tobacco (80,000).

“Youth use of tobacco products is unsafe in any form – combustible, smokeless, or electronic,” said Karen Hacker, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. “This report provides critical insights needed to combat this serious public health concern and help protect our nation’s youth from the harmful effects of tobacco.”

Disparities Persist Among Subgroups Among middle and high school students combined, current use of any tobacco product was higher among students who identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (14.2%) than those who identified as heterosexual (7.9%) and those who were “not sure” about their sexual identity (5.5%); and higher among students who identified as transgender (18.9%) compared to those not transgender (8.2%) or not sure (9.1%).

Current use of any tobacco product was higher among students who had severe (14.2%), moderate (11.2%), or mild (9.6%) symptoms of psychological distress compared to those with no psychological distress (5.5%).

Additionally, among all race and ethnicity groups, non-Hispanic Black students reported the highest prevalence of current combustible tobacco product use (5.2%), and specifically cigar use (3.1%). While youth use of tobacco products in any form is unsafe, the death and disease from tobacco product use in the United States is primarily caused by combustible tobacco products.

dle and high school students who currently used any tobacco product, most (about 8 in 10 or 1.95 million) reported using flavored tobacco product(s) in the past 30 days.

Approximately 76% of students in 2021 reported exposure to tobacco product marketing through traditional media (e.g., newspapers or magazines), and approximately 74% of students who used social media had ever seen ecigarette–related posts or content.

Among students who had ever used e-cigarettes, peer use and curiosity were the most cited reasons for first trying e-cigarettes in 2021.

However, among students who currently used e-cigarettes, the most cited reasons for use were feelings of anxiety, stress, or depression and the “high or buzz” associated with nicotine use. Importantly, nicotine withdrawal is commonly accompanied by symptoms of anxiety and depression, and temporary relief of these symptoms through use of a nicotine-containing product might perpetuate continued nicotine use.

Among the approximately 2.55 million students who currently used any tobacco product, 65.3% reported that they were seriously thinking about quitting all tobacco products. In addition, 60.2% of students who currently used tobacco products reported that they stopped using all tobacco products for 1 or more days during the past 12 months because they were trying to quit.

“The 2021 NYTS findings include important new information about youth tobacco use behaviors and associated factors that will help the FDA evaluate, design, and implement our tobacco regulatory and educational programs,” said Mitch Zeller, J.D., Director of FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products. “It’s revealing that about two-thirds of current youth users expressed a desire to quit tobacco products and that threequarters of youth reported having seen or heard a tobacco prevention ad. But the 2021 use data are still concerning and will be valuable for policymakers and educators committed to protecting the next generation from tobacco-related disease and death.”

What more can be done about youth tobacco product use?

Tobacco product use remains the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States. Nearly all tobacco use begins during youth and young adulthood.

Nicotine–the addictive drug found in tobacco products–can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid20s. Parents, educators, youth advocates, and health care providers can help protect youth from the harms of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, and can support and encourage youth to quit.

Strategies to reduce tobacco product use and initiation among all youth include increasing prices of tobacco products; establishing comprehensive clean indoor air policies that deformalize tobacco use and protect persons from exposure to secondhand smoke and e-cigarette aerosol; sustaining media campaigns that warn about the dangers of tobacco product use; reducing youth access to tobacco products, including enforcement of the federal Tobacco 21external icon policy against retailers who violate the law; and restricting the sales of flavored e-cigarettes.

The internet...You have the power to choose how to use it. Take the best and leave the rest. I think most everything in life comes with a double-edged sword. Too much of anything tends to create problems.

Sunshine, in large doses, can cause sunburns and skin damage. Too much food can make us uncomfortable, lethargic, and create a myriad of health woes. The list goes on.

The internet is no exception. In real estate, we think of it as a very useful tool that has brought us amazing capabilities. It’s now possible to work from a variety of locations.

If you need to write up an offer, it can be done hundreds of miles from the office. During 2020 and into 2021, we had closings via FaceTime in order to “be there” for our clients. Most of my clients preferred the ease of pre-signing closing documents and electronically signing purchase offers from their home. This includes a 90 year old seller who did it from her room in an assisted living facility. Many prospective buyers appreciated the live video previews of properties to save them time. Overall, the internet has given buyers and sellers easier access to properties and the marketplace. In short, they are savvier. It’s brought more transparency to our

industry and that is a good thing. Does the internet have a dark side? Certainly! But that doesn’t mean you have to spend time there. Last night, my wife and I watched our nieces debut their new Irish dance dresses that they will compete in this weekend. Over the past couple years through FaceTime, I am able to visit with my sister who moved to Colorado. We have friends who shared parts of their Cancun vacation with us real time. What fun it is to be able to see and share each other’s lives from miles and miles away. Life is ever changing; I think our ability to adapt and change with it is critical to our well-being and happiness. The internet has given us professional freedom, given our clients access to more information, and on a personal level, we enjoy a closer connection to out-of-town family and friends.

One Perspective Stuck in the middle between aging parents and children or young adults, often we feel as if everyone would just listen to us, everything would be less dramatic, less chaotic, and less stressful. As we become more pressed for time and resources and a desire for helping those in our family (or others in general), we actually become the drama in everyone else’s lives.

This is not where we wanted to be.

As parents, we want to give our children the best advice so they do not make the same mistakes we did or fall into holes we avoided.

We may find ourselves going on about something endlessly (giving examples and trying to tie things together for our children) or trying to drive home a point repeating ourselves over and over. The truth is that when our viewpoints differ, our children have learned to tune us out when they want to or feign interest and even acceptance only to go and do what they want to do anyway.

If we are not making progress with our own children on some viewpoints, there are a couple of things to consider. First we pray that we are strong enough to give them up to God instead of believing we can and will change our children. This would assume that

they are not young children and have also been brought up with access to God’s words.

If our adult children were not brought up in the faith, the way we faithfully live now can serve in a powerful way.

We will never be able to teach them the lessons that only God can teach. If we do not put them in God’s care and step back, while praying for them, we are enabling our children to think we are the answers (or alternatively, the problem) in the difficulties they encounter. Likewise, if we have the attitude that we can and will change our adult children (we just have to keep at it and “try harder”), we reinforce the message to ourselves and to those who interact with us that “God needs our help” as if He could not do this on His own.

We may be saying the right words out loud but how we are live is not actually reinforcing those words.

Let our actions speak louder than our words. We live the things we believe, we acknowledge when we fail and ask God for help, and we continue exhibit and reinforce what our faith has shown us.
