Calumet City native serves aboard forwarddeployed Navy warship in Japan
Petty Officer 3rd Class Keenan Taylor, a native of Calumet City, Illinois, serves in Japan aboard a forward-deployed U.S. Navy warship.
Taylor joined the Navy 2019 years ago. Today, Taylor serves as an operations specialist aboard USS Dewey.
“I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself,” said Taylor. “It’s something I have been interested in since a field trip to the USS Midway.”
Growing up in Calumet City, Taylor attended Thornwood High School. Today, Taylor relies upon skills and values similar to those found in Calumet City to succeed in the military.
“My papa always instilled in me that ‘people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan,’” said Taylor. “It taught me to always have a plan and a sense of structure. Although things might always go as planned, it’s a step in the right direction.”
Modern U.S. Navy surface ships provide a wide range of warfighting capabilities in multi-threat air, surface and subsurface environments.
A Navy surface ship is capable of operating independently or as part of carrier strike groups, surface action groups or expeditionary strike groups.
Jobs aboard a U.S. Navy ship are highly specialized, requiring both dedication and skill, according to Navy officials. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times.
As a member of the Navy, Taylor is part of a world-class organization focused on maintaining maritime dominance, strengthening partnerships, increasing competitive warfighting capabilities and sustaining combat-ready forces in support of the National Defense Strategy.
“The Navy contributes to national defense by being present and capable,” said Taylor. “Our mission is to ensure freedom of navigation.”
Taylor serves in Japan as part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces. These naval forces operate with allies and partners to preserve a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Service members in this region are part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, which has the largest area of responsibility in the world.
“As the largest force in our nation’s front line against revisionist actors, U.S. Pacific Fleet meets this great responsibility with strength, resolve and confidence,” said Adm. Samuel Paparo, U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander.
“Together with our joint and combined partner operations, we are positioned to defend - across all domains - any attempts to threaten our nation, our allies and partner’s security, freedom and well-being.”
Taylor and the sailors they serve with have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service.
“I’m proud of putting on the rank of petty officer third class and being knowledgeable in my job,” said Taylor.
As Taylor and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.
“Serving gives me a chance to be a part of something that most people are not part of,” said Taylor. “It’s serving something bigger than myself and continuing the great Navy traditions.”
Taylor is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I would like to thank my uncle Chief Johnson,” added Taylor. “Listening to his experience inspired me to join the Navy.”
Move All Summer Long5 Activities to Keep Children Active
Everybody, no matter their age, can benefit from daily physical activity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), young children should be physically active throughout the day for growth and development. Despite the common misconception that children are in perpetual motion, the CDC reminds caregivers to encourage children to be active when they play.
“Physical activity is important because it is critical in assisting with gross motor development and helps support development in other areas,” said Khy Sline from KinderCare Learning Center’s education team. “Children thrive when we give them the tools to use their bodies and muscles in new ways and make mind-body connections.”
Consider these five activities to encourage children to get moving.
Blow bubbles. Appealing to children from infancy on up, seeing bubbles floating around can encourage babies to reach out and try to grab them, building arm strength and coordination. Toddlers and older children can run around the patio or lawn chasing bubbles and watching them pop.
Build a tunnel. Whether indoors or out, made from furniture covered with sheets or cardboard boxes, tunnels encourage children to move over, under, around and through, which helps them explore new ways of moving while also building coordination and balance.
Play hide and seek. As they dash around trying to find the perfect hiding spot, children build spatial awareness, their understanding of where their bodies are in relation to other people and objects.
Play red light, green light. This classic game helps children build
coordination - connecting the verbal instruction with the physical movement - while also teaching them impulse control, an essential executive function skill. Be sure to get creative with instructions and add variations like tip-toeing, crawling, hopping and more.
Walk the line. Draw a line on the ground using chalk outdoors or painter’s tape indoors and encourage your children to walk along the line. This activity helps children improve balance and coordination. Get creative and add in a challenge by drawing a wavy or zig-zag line. Once your children get the hang of following the line, ask them to think of other ways to travel along that space, such as hopping on one foot or skipping. For more ideas to encourage physical activity among children, visit kindercare.com.

“Your Closing Day”
MIKE BUDER
Your closing has been scheduled…It seems like the stress of buying a home –from choosing the right house, procuring a mortgage and negotiating an agreeable price is finally behind you. Even the inspection, appraisal, and other necessities that can upend a deal are finished. Now, however, you face one final hurdle – the closing process. Even though some lenders today have moved this process online due to Covid, you will most likely end up sitting at a table with people you have never met before. This includes the title company’s representative, the seller’s real estate agent and the seller’s attorney. There are many documents to sign, most of which you’ve never seen before. With probably the biggest financial decision of your life on the line, panic seems to be an appropriate response. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid high anxiety. Hiring an attorney or using a legal service to represent you at the closing is always good for your own peace of mind. If you are getting a mortgage the lender’s professionals will review the documents for accuracy. If you do not use an attorney, typically the title officer will explain what each document is and let you know where to sign. The most important documents a buyer will have to sign include a mortgage which details the agreed terms of the loan, a mortgage note which is a legal document where you promise to pay off the loan amount. The deed is the document that officially transfers the property from the seller to the buyer and the title insurance which protects the buyer and the lender from
potential problems with the newly obtained property. The day of closing you will need to bring a current photo id and your certified or cashiers check to cover closing costs and down payment (unless you previously wired the money). Your funds will need to come from an account that has been approved by your mortgage professional and loan underwriter prior to issuing your clear to close, also, though you filled out that loan application previously, you may be surprised that you are asked to sign a new one at the closing. You are required to let the lender know if your financial circumstances have changed since the original application before you sign. After all the documents have been signed, you may need to wait for the lender’s wire to clear (your actual loan) and then you’ll receive the keys for your new home and be sent on your way with copies of all the documents. It would be smart to put these in a safe place. Also, you likely will receive temporary coupons for your mortgage payments with the due dates on them. Closing on a home can be a draining experience. However, once your closing is settled, you can look forward to many years of home ownership.

Illinois lawmakers today overwhelmingly approved legislation to help police more quickly track vehicles after a carjacking, increasing the chances of catching the offenders and stopping the vehicles from being used in additional crimes, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.
The Illinois House gave final approval today to legislation crafted by Sheriff Dart that requires automakers that sell vehicles in the state to create a 24/7 hotline to relay location information on carjacked vehicles to police free of charge. The measure also incorporates safeguards to protect consumers, ensuring that tracking data is only released to police when there is a warrant or court order, when the vehicle owner consents, or in situations where a vehicle is carjacked and there is a clear and present danger of death or bodily harm.
Co-sponsored by more than 100 lawmakers, HB2245 received overwhelming support, with no dissenting votes in the Senate and the House. Evidencing the importance of the issue, all 59 senators co-sponsored the legislation in a highly unique show of bi-partisan support. The measure now awaits signing by Gov. JB Pritzker, and the Sheriff’s Office urges him to sign it immediately.
“Carjackings are a horrific crime that has our county on edge. Ultimately, the quicker we can recover these vehicles, the more of these crimes we can prevent and the more likely we are to catch and prosecute these offenders,” Sheriff Dart said. “I want to thank the lawmakers who worked with me on this commonsense solution to help police locate these vehicles faster, while protecting owner privacy. This measure will help victims of these terrifying crimes and significantly decrease the chance that these vehicles will be used to facilitate murders, armed robberies, and other violent acts that brutalize our communities.”
Many vehicles built after 2015 have tracking capabilities, but legal access to that data is routinely delayed when automakers do not staff existing call centers afterhours, require victims to pay a service fee to activate tracking, or institute legally unnecessary hurdles.
“While some automakers have been extremely cooperative in helping police protect the public, others give us excuses and
unnecessary conditions, costing investigators precious hours and even days,” Dart said. “The people of Illinois shouldn’t have to live in fear of becoming a victim at every stop sign, gas station, or even their own driveways.”
Sheriff Dart was the first in the nation to raise this issue with automakers in late 2021 and requested the industry’s collaboration in addressing carjackings. After months of inaction by the auto industry, the Sheriff’s Office pursued legislation sponsored by Rep. Martin Moylan, Sen. Michael Hastings, and Sen. Willie Preston.
“We understand carjackers steal cars around the clock, not just nine to five,” said Rep. Moylan, the bill’s House sponsor. “They steal in the day now, and in the evening, and it doesn’t matter where you are, who you are with, or what you look like, so we made sure we stood firm on a 24-hour, 7 days a week hotline.”
State Sen. Hastings said, “This legislation will be an important tool for law enforcement and consumers during pivotal life-threatening situations. The faster we can locate where a carjacker or kidnapper is and arrest them, the safer our communities will be.”
State Sen. Willie Preston said, “This legislation will help keep Illinois drivers and families safer. By establishing a hotline, we can give our law enforcement the tools they need to help bring down the number of carjackings.”
Cook County saw 1,838 reported carjackings in 2022. That year was down 9 percent from 2021, but still up 24 percent from 2020.
The hotline is just one plank of the Sheriff’s efforts to address carjacking.
Sheriff’s Police are one of the primary agencies in a regional task force that has helped lead to an exponential decrease in the amount of time it takes to locate carjacked vehicles.
Additionally, the Sheriff implemented an innovated consent-to-track form that owners can submit to the Sheriff’s Office to preauthorize access to vehicle tracking information in theevent it’s illegally taken. Having the completed form on hand will make it easier for law enforcement to access tracking information from manufacturers.
The consent form, safety tips and carjackingdeterrent decals are available on the Sheriff’s Office website.

One of Frank Sinatra’s catchier songs, in my opinion, is “My Way.” The self-affirming song swells and falls to a beautiful melody, and features “old blue eyes” at his finest.
But my love for “My Way” ends at the music, and doesn’t extend to the lyrics.
Here’s a verse:
And now the end is here
And so I face that final curtain
My friend I’ll make it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more

MINISTER: REV. GERALDINE COLVIN SUNDAY SERVICE.......................10:00 AM
I did it, I did it my way.
At the end of it all, Sinatra says, his great achievement in life will be that he stayed true to himself.
Unfortunately, the singer’s conclusion is wrong.
Some of the most well-known people in the Bible tried to live their own way, only to face the dire consequences of their actions. David had a man killed and slept with his wife. Jonah tried to run in the opposite direction of God’s calling, and ended up in a fish’s stomach. There are many examples!
The truth is, when we face life’s “final curtain,” our only hope will be not that we did things our way, but His way. That is, God’s way.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
The Lord has promised that doing things His way will result in much more than an empty self-assured individualism at the end of life. Following the Lord’s blueprint for life is a catalyst for joy, peace, comfort, and God’s blessing, both on earth and in the life yet to come.
So, if you can, sing like Frank Sinatra. But don’t live like him.

Sheriff Dart, Uber Team Up to Help Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Survivors
Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced a critical partnership today with Uber, the largest rideshare company in the United States, to support the need for transportation and grocery delivery services amongst domestic violence and human trafficking survivors who are receiving assistance through the Sheriff’s Office.
Through this partnership, the Sheriff’s Victim Support Services unit will receive $10,000 in vouchers from Uber to provide free rides and grocery deliveries to survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking who are receiving support from the Office. The transportation provided by this partnership will allow these individuals to independently obtain necessities, medical care, and seek counseling and employment.
Transportation is a critical need for survivors of violence. Approximately 90% of human trafficking and domestic violence survivors helped by the Victim Support Services unit do not have access to a vehicle. The vouchers will
be utilized by Sheriff staff based on need.
“Too many times, just getting from Point A to Point B represents a significant barrier for survivors of violence,” says Sheriff Dart. “This barrier often makes it difficult for them to access services and basic needs that can help them repair their lives. Supporting survivors with these vouchers will give these individuals a sense of freedom and assist them in moving forward.”
Julia Paige, Head of Global Social Impact at Uber, said, “We’re honored to partner with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office in supporting survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence by donating $10,000 in Uber credits through our Access Fund. This program will help survivors relocate, travel to and from safe places, and get connected to practical support services to help find safety and rebuild their lives. We’re committed to doing our part to help our communities and are proud to support this impactful initiative.”
Live a Life of Love (Part 2)
by Janice R Newman
In part 1, we discussed living a life of love towards expressing love for God and yourself. Part 2 reflects on living a life of love while showing love and respect toward others. Others include people you know, strangers on the street or the checkout clerks, and even the customer service representatives on the phone that you will probably never meet or talk with again. If you engage others with the fruits of the Spirit with kindness, gentleness, and love, it spreads positively and makes a difference in people’s lives.
Love encompasses a wide range of emotions, attitudes, and behaviors depending on the relationship and situation involved.
Demonstrating love for others consists of:
• Cultivate the Fruit of the Spirit: Develop your character and demeanor like Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and selfcontrol. Against such things there is no law.” Showing love, joy, goodness, and kindness daily by acting with generosity, benevolence, and goodwill towards others, to bring them happiness and well-being. We were taught early to say “please” and “thank you”. Those simple words of kindness, goodness, and love can make someone’s day. Be intentional by expressing love through kindness and self-control such as opening a door, allowing someone to skip you in line, pausing to think before asking or acting irrationally, or telling a clerk “Have a wonderful day!”.
• Selflessness: Placing the needs, desires, and happiness of others before one’s own. As a parent or spouse, it’s common to put aside our needs for the happiness of our children or loved ones. Sacrificing long hours at work, going without, or losing sleep to stay up with a sick child all out of love. Volunteer in the community to extend love and kindness to those in need. This could involve helping the elderly or neighbors with their lawns or snow, working at a shelter, or reading a book at a library to children. Your act of selflessness
can become a role model for others to follow suit.
• Forgiveness: Letting go of resentment, pain, negative feelings, or grudges towards someone who wronged you, and extending grace and understanding. Turning the other cheek and not acting in anger. We, as humans, want God to forgive us, but we have a hard time forgiving others. Harboring resentment, holding grudges, or displaying negative feelings can hinder your ability to love others fully. Learning to forgive and letting go of the past hurts, can allow you to heal and grow in love.
• Acceptance: Without judgment or conditionality, valuing and embracing someone for who they are. We are all different with no two alike, even twins are different based on personality or likes. We come in different shapes, sizes, and colors; therefore, true love has no judgments. With love, we remove assumptions and show kindness despite knowing or not knowing a person’s situation. Embrace diversity and appreciate the uniqueness of everyone.
• Show compassion and practice empathy: We cannot live a life of love without compassion. We must have a deep concern and empathy for the well-being of others, along with having a desire to help and serve others. Put yourself in others’ shoes and try to view and understand their perspectives and experiences. When you see from others’ “shoes” it helps you connect to them with compassion. This also can occur at your work with customers or coworkers. Serve with intentional love and compassion in your employment.
Remember, loving others and expressing love is a lifelong journey and can be a battle. Practice the fruits of the Spirit and the principles noted here consistently, and over time, they will become second nature and learned behavior. Your efforts will create a ripple effect, positively impacting the lives of others and fostering a compassionate society.

Speaking Of Seniors
Doctors’ Billing Firm Sent False Bill
On May 15 and 16 I investigated a bill that a client got from the billing firm of some doctors. The client is from Munster, Indiana.
On May 15, I read the first papers that the client gave me. I asked her for more papers if she had any. I made phone calls to her insurance company to get some information about the bill.
On May 16, the client dropped some more papers at our Munster office. The staff there forwarded the papers to me. I phoned the billing company with our client on the phone to confirm that I had her permission to speak and question for her.
I learned that the bill was false. The client’s insurance company sent a check with the payment in full over seven weeks earlier.
I had a few choice words for the billing company. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the doctors’ billing company.
Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $XXX on Account Number XXXXXXXXX for services rendered on 02/22/2023.
I checked with the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this matter. It reported that your bill is false – bogus. It reported that it sent you full payment of this bill on 03/21/2023. The check number of the payment is XXX XXX XX. You should have received the payment by 03/28/2023. So, you should have received the payment more than six weeks ago. Are you six weeks late in entering payments in your accounting system?
Please, phone the check clearing firm XXXXX at 877-XXX-XXXX and ask them to help you find the money. But stop billing our client to pay a bill that her insurance company already paid.
Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

Produce Shopping on a Budget
5 strategies to save on fresh fruits & veggies
Cooking meals that bring your loved ones joy is often objective No. 1 but creating those flavorful favorites on an appropriate budget is an important aspect of well-rounded, family-friendly recipes. A few simple steps, like developing good grocery shopping habits, can put smiles on hungry faces without leaving a dent in your finances.
Consider these tips from the experts at Healthy Family Project along with its produce partners, which are on their 2023 Mission for Nutrition to improve access to fresh produce that’s essential in alleviating many public health and personal wellness challenges. This year’s partners are striving to be part of the improvement efforts by donating funds to increase the accessibility to fruits and vegetables in schools through the Foundation for Fresh Produce.
Make a List (and Stick to It)
When buying fresh produce, remember some items have a shorter shelf life. Limiting purchases to items on your list can help lower grocery spending while alleviating food waste.
Buy Local
Transportation cost is one of the biggest factors in the price of produce, meaning buying local, when possible, can help reduce your total at checkout.
Stock Up on Seasonal Produce
Although you can generally find any produce item at any time of year, this isn’t always an affordable practice. Knowing when your favorite fruits and veggies are in-season can save you money and allow you to use the freshest ingredients in family breakfasts like ProteinPacked Sausage Breakfast Muffins and Savory English Muffins.

The front or feature table of the produce department often offers the best deals. Don’t forget to look at the end caps on each produce aisle, which sometimes display seasonal items.
Befriend the Produce Manager
Throughout each week, a “hot buy” may come into the store that didn’t make it into the weekly ad. This happens with items at the end of their seasons, in particular, or if a crop is doing well. Chat with the produce manager at your local store and he or she may inform you of special prices.

Like everyone, you may have a lot of financial goals. But are they all of equal importance? Probably not. And do they share a similar timeline? Again, it’s unlikely. So, your first step may be to prioritize your goals — and then follow a process that can help you achieve them.
This process should include the following steps:
• Identify your goals as “must have” or “nice to have.” Making sure you can retire comfortably and won’t outlive your resources is a “must have” goal. For this goal, you can’t compromise — you need to be certain of achieving it, or at least as certain as possible. But if you want to someday own a vacation home by the beach, and you can’t ever quite afford it, you might find an acceptable substitute, such as renting. So, it seems fair to say that achieving this goal would be “nice to have.”
• Prioritize your investment dollars. Unless you have unlimited sums to invest — and very few of us have that luxury — you’ll probably need to prioritize where your investment dollars are going. For your main “must have” goal — retirement — you’ll be helped by the ability to automatically invest through your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. If you’re on track toward this goal, and you budget carefully and potentially receive salary increases over the years, you may also find space to keep contributing toward the “nice to have” goals.
• Put “price tags” on your goals. You need to know what your goals will cost. Of course, you may need to estimate the costs for some goals based on different factors. For example, when you think about your goal of retiring comfortably without outliving your money, you’ll need to consider some key questions, including these: When do you want to retire? What sort of retirement lifestyle do you envision? Do you see yourself
downsizing your living arrangements?
For other goals, though, such as purchasing a vacation home, you could get more specific on how much money you’ll need.
• Follow an appropriate strategy. The nature of your goals, and their estimated cost, along with your appetite for risk, should drive your investment strategy — but another key factor is time. So, for a long-term goal like retirement, you’ll likely need a reasonable amount of quality growth-oriented investments in your portfolio. While these investments — such as stocks and stock-based mutual funds — will fluctuate in value over shorter periods of time, your hope is that, over several decades, they will ultimately provide the growth you need to meet your retirement goal. However, to achieve a goal you want to meet in a year or so — perhaps you’re paying for a wedding or planning a long vacation — you may want to consider more stable investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), short-term bonds or even cash or cash equivalents. They may not provide much in the way of growth, but you can essentially count on them to provide the amount you need when you need it. You’ll need to regularly review the performance of your investment strategy for each goal to assess your progress.
Achieving any goals — whether they’re “must have” or “nice to have” — can be challenging. But by identifying and prioritizing these goals, following an appropriate strategy to meet them, and consistently reviewing your approach, you can help yourself get to where you want to go.

Real Estate Questions & Answers
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS
Question: I rented a house last April with a one-year lease. In October the landlord informed me they wanted to sell the house; they are now putting it on the market. This is very upsetting to my children, as we will have strangers invading our privacy.
I am worried that they will list it below market value to unload it, thus bringing a lot of traffic through the house.
I know other people have been through this and I want to know how to get through this invasion and deal with it emotionally without having to move again.
Answer: It doesn’t matter that the property is being sold -- the current owner and any new owner must respect the terms of your lease. Moreover, it may be that a new owner will want you to stay on and not move.
As to showing the property, check the lease. Many leases require 24 hour’s notice before showing.
Question: Why do real estate brokers come up with an asking price on a house and then within a month start saying the price needs to be lowered?
Answer: Because they are trying to get the best possible price for your property.
No one can predict the future. Brokers are suggesting a price based on similar homes that have sold. Similar does not mean Exact. Thus, buyers may not find your home as desirable as other similar home they have viewed. No offers or few showings indicates that the home is too high for the current market.
Imagine if a broker suggested a lower price and the property sold in 20 minutes. Wouldn’t you have a nagging feeling that you should have asked for more? Alternatively, it makes sense to test the market -- in some cases homes sell for the initial asking price, depending on the property and local market conditions.
