Cook County Treasurer’s Office to recycle flowers and bouquets from the world’s best floral artists by delivering them to Chicago police officers
Volunteers from the office of Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas will make sure that hundreds of flowers and intricate bouquets from the American Institute of Floral Designers Symposium in Chicago next week won’t go to waste. The award-winning bouquets will be delivered to several of the city’s 25 police stations and given to police officers and their spouses.
“We’re just trying to spread a little joy this summer,” said Pappas. “Police officers put their lives on the line for the citizens of this city each and every day. This is just a small way of saying: ‘Thanks, Officer.’”
The flower design show, which runs July 1 – 6 at the Hilton Chicago, is the floral industry’s premiere floral design education event attracting the industry’s leading business owners, floral artists, suppliers and event professionals.
Hundreds of flowers and bouquets from the show will be picked up and delivered to area police stations daily by volunteers from the Treasurer’s Office and from Bloom ‘N Toss, a Chicago-area company that donates and repurposes flowers to hospitals and nursing homes. Catherine Costello, the owner of Bloom ‘N Toss, is coordinating the effort.
“When I first learned about this incredible opportunity to recycle these flowers and bouquets that have been created by the most talented hands in the floral industry I immediately reached out to Treasurer Pappas,” said Costello. “I knew because of her extensive outreach work she would be able to help with this truly worthwhile endeavor.”
In addition to familiar flowers like carnations, roses and sunflowers, the bouquets will feature exotic tropical flowers like pincushion protea, heliconia and orchids.

ETFs can opportunityspell
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN
Mutual funds offer investors a chance to own shares in dozens of companies, as well as bonds, government securities and other investments. But you might be able to broaden your portfolio further by owning another type of fund — an exchange-traded fund (ETF).
An ETF, like a mutual fund, can own an array of investments, including stocks, bonds and other securities. Many ETFs are passively managed in that they track the performance of a specific index, such as the S&P 500. In this respect, they differ from most mutual funds, which tend to be actively managed — that is, the fund managers are free to buy and sell individual securities within the fund.
Another difference between ETFs and mutual funds is that ETFs are traded like stocks, so shares are bought and sold throughout the day based on the current market price, whereas mutual funds are traded just once a day, at a price calculated at the end of the trading day. Whether this ability to make intra-day trades is meaningful to you will likely depend on how active you are in managing your own investments.
For some people, the main attraction of ETFs is their tax advantages. Because many ETFs are index funds, they generally do much less buying and selling than actively managed funds — and fewer sales mean fewer taxable capital gains. These ETFs are somewhat similar to index mutual funds, which are also considered to be tax-efficient, as opposed to actively managed funds, which constantly buy and sell investments, passing on taxable capital gains to you throughout the life of the fund. (Keep in mind, though, that mutual funds that trade frequently may still be appropriate for your financial strategy. While taxes are one element to consider when evaluating mutual funds, or any investment, other factors, such as growth potential and ability to diversify your
portfolio, are also important.)
ETFs typically also have lower operating costs than mutual funds, resulting in lower overall fees. Part of the reason for these lower costs is that actively managed mutual funds, by definition, usually have larger management teams devoted to researching, buying and selling securities. By contrast, passively managed ETFs may have leaner, less-costly management structures.
But while most ETFs may share the same basic operating model, many types are available. You can invest in equity ETFs, which may track stocks in a particular industry or an index of equities (S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and so on), or you can purchase fixed-income ETFs, which invest in bonds. ETFs are also available for currencies and commodities.
Of course, as with all investments, ETF investing does involve risk. Your principal and investment return will fluctuate in value, so when you redeem your ETF, it may be worth more or less than the original investment. Also, liquidity may be an issue. Some ETFs may be more difficult to sell than other investments, which could be a problem if you need the money quickly. And because it’s so easy to move in and out of ETFs, you might be tempted to “overtrade” rather than following an appropriate long-term investment strategy.
A financial professional can evaluate your situation and help you determine whether ETFs are suitable for your needs. At a minimum, they represent another investment opportunity that may prove useful as you work toward your financial goals.

Man
with Attempted Murder in Road Rage Shooting
A Chicago man has been charged with attempted murder after a Sheriff’sPolice investigation found he shot at two motorists during a road rage incident, Cook County SheriffThomas J. Dart announced today.
At approximately 11:55 p.m. on May 22, 2022, Sheriff’s Police responded to the 8800 block of West Golf Road where they met a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, who had been shot in the leg.
Sheriff’s Police detectives learned that the driver of another vehicle pulled out a firearm and fired ashot at the victims’ vehicle during a road rage incident that began in a gas station parking lot in the9200 block of Golf Road in unincorporated Maine Township.
The offending vehicle had its lights off while pursuing the offenders and drove away after the shooting.
During the course of their investigation, detectives identified the offender as 37-year-old Juan M.Contreras.
An arrest warrant was issued for Contreras on May 30, 2022. On May 9, 2023, a federal arrest warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was approved by a federal judge.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents located Contreras in Lewisburg, Tennessee on June 8 and took him into custody without incident.
After waiving extradition, Contreras returned to Cook County on June 23. Later that day, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved two counts of attempted first degree murder, one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon against Contreras.
Contreras appeared for a bond hearing today at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building, where a judge ordered him held on a $500,000 D bond with electronic monitoring.
The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.
We observe National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month each July to bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health encourages state, tribal, and local leaders, communitybased organizations, faith leaders, healthcare providers and individuals to educate their communities regarding mental health stigma.
According to data from the CDC, suicide was the third leading cause of death for African Americans ages 10-24 in 2020. The suicide rate is four times greater for African American men than women. African American females in grades 9-12 were 60% more likely to attempt suicide than white females.
In 2020, suicide was the second leading cause of death for Native Americans ages 1024. The overall rate of death from suicide for Native American adults is about 20% higher than for white adults. Native Americans had the highest suicide rate of any ethnic group in 2021.
In 2019, adolescent Native American females, ages 15-24, had a death rate that was five times higher than white females in the same age group.
In that same period, Native American males 1524 had a death rate by suicide that was twice that of white males in the same age group.
In 2020, suicide was the second leading cause of death for Hispanics ages 10-24. Suicide attempts for Hispanic girls, grades 9-12, were 30% higher than that of white girls of the same age.
From 2018-2021, suicide rates among youth
aged 10-24 increased by 36% among African Americans, 16% for Native Americans, and 8.2% for Hispanics. By comparison, the suicide rate for white Americans decreased by 3.9%.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that despite the need, only one in three African American adults with mental illness receive treatment. Socioeconomic factors can also play a key role. In 2020, 10.4% of African American adults had no health insurance. Among Native Americans, suicide remains highly stigmatized and may be affected by myths and misunderstandings such as: talking about suicide will make it happen, suicidal ideation is a cry for attention, and the belief that a person with a strong family would never end their life. Each of these are false. More than ½ of all Hispanic adults ages 18-25 will not receive treatment for mental illness. Reasons for this may include language barriers, less health insurance coverage, legal status, the stigma that goes with mental illness, and acculturation.
For more information about National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, please visit National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month — Health Disparities (hhs. gov). The Jason Foundation is also a valuable resource. The Jason Foundation is dedicated to the prevention of suicide prevention through education and awareness programs. Heart Smart
In Genesis 1:2, the Spirit hovered over the raw materials of creation to breathe order and life. Sadly, sin entered God’s world through the rebellion of our first parents, Adam and Eve. Because of sin, creation went back to being ‘tohu’, without form, and ‘vohu’, void of life. Since the Fall of our first parents, ‘tohu’ means disorder and ‘vohu’ means death. Imagine a neighborhood after a terrible bombing. All is ‘tohu’, disordered piles of splintered lumber and twisted metal where houses once stood. All is ‘vohu’, lifeless bodies where living people once worked and played. Jeremiah 4:23a (ESV) uses this language to describe the consequences of Israel’s rebellion against God: “I looked on the earth, and behold, it was without form (tohu) and void (vohu).”
God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem our fallen world. He also sent his Holy Spirit to breathe order and life into creation and us again. Isaiah 32:14-18 anticipated how God’s Spirit would reverse the ‘tohu’ and ‘vohu’ of 32:14. When poured out from on high, he would breathe upon a wasteland void of life to fill it with plants and people (32:15,18). He would then re-order their disordered hearts and community in line with his wise blueprint for human life, revealed in his word (32:16-17).
We are ‘vohu’, spiritually dead, until the Holy Spirit breathes life into our hearts, moving us to embrace Christ in the gospel. Then the Holy Spirit enters our ‘tohu’ to reorder our lives, relationships with God and others, and communities in line with his wise blueprint for humanity. One day, all of God’s children – all who are reconciled to our Father through faith in Christ – will enjoy the Holy Spirit’s finished work, a new creation free of disorder and death.

HOW INDEPENDENCE DAY GOT STARTED:
On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, accouncing the colonies’ separation from Great Britian. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American Independence with festivites ranging from, parades and ceremonies to fireworks and parties. In the beginning, the colonists began to chafe under the rule of the king of England and declared the the country their own with much ensuing warfare and the rest as they say, is history. We are so lucky to live in this lovely country. And as evidenced by our crowded borders, with many others trying to get in. On July 4th as we all celebrate with parades and and picnics, let’s remember to say a prayer that we keep this Repubic a Democracy for all forever!

Illinois To Make Standard Driver’s Licenses Available To Noncitizens Regardless Of Immigration Status
By PETER HANCOCK Capitol News Illinois phancock@capitolnewsillinois.com
SPRINGFIELD – Immigrants in Illinois with or without permission from U.S. immigration authorities will soon be able to obtain standard driver’s licenses that can be used for identification.
Gov. JB Pritzker on Friday signed House Bill 3882, which will phase out the “Temporary Visitor Driver’s License,” or TVDL, which noncitizens currently use to drive legally in Illinois. The new law takes effect July 1, 2024.
“This legislation is a significant step in eliminating the barriers to opportunity that many undocumented immigrants face,” Pritzker said in a statement. “We’re ensuring every eligible individual can obtain a driver’s license, making our roads safer, decreasing stigma, and creating more equitable systems for all.”
TVDLs look similar to a standard driver’s licenses, except they have a purple strip across the top that reads “TVDL” above the words “NOT VALID FOR IDENTIFICATION.” Under the new
law, those people will qualify for standard licenses that carry the words “Federal Limits Apply” at the top, but which do not qualify as REAL ID for travel purposes.
Immigrant rights advocates say the purple bar on the TVDL stigmatizes the people holding them, creates barriers to other kinds of services that require identification such as picking up medication from a pharmacy or signing an apartment lease, and exposes them to law enforcement action.
“They know and the officer knows that this form of ID essentially serves as an admission of being undocumented or having a temporary visa,” Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said during a June 21 news conference. “TVDLs have become the ‘Scarlet Letter’ of someone’s immigration status and sadly exposes them to discrimination or immigration enforcement.”
In 2013, Illinois became one of the first states in the nation to offer TVDLs to residents without legal residency status. Proponents argued they would help ensure that all drivers on state roads, regardless of immigration status, had passed a road test and carry liability insurance.
Currently, more than 300,000 individuals carry Illinois TVDLs, according to the secretary of state’s office.

a social security number to receive a standard license would be the same as it was for receiving a TVDL. The applicant must have lived in Illinois for more than a year and must provide U.S. immigration documentation, or if they don’t have that, a passport or a consular card that is within two years of its expiration date.
Giannoulias’ office said that documentation will ensure that noncitizens are not added to the voter rolls as part of Illinois’ automatic voter registration program.
The measure also prohibits the secretary of state from sharing driver information with immigration officials unless the official has a court-issued warrant, order or subpoena.
Real IDs requirements, which are scheduled to go into effect in May 2025, include stricter documentation such as a birth certificate and Social Security number to prove U.S. citizenship. They will be required for air travel and access to military bases or other secure facilities.
HB 3882 was among more than 150 bills that Pritzker signed on Friday.

As your Realtor the last 90 days, Please consider this my resignation…I knew when I was first introduced to you that you were going to be too much and a bit of a challenge to convince. But, because you had a lot to offer, like granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and a cul-de-sac lot, I would give you a shot in hopes that with the quality of service that I offer I could help you to change, bring you to reality and help you find the right match. Now a few months have gone by, you have not changed, you continue to bring up the 2020 through 2022 market and you have not taken my advice. We have become very stressful towards each other. I have seen other attractive properties in your area become available, they are the same age, same square footage and just as upgraded, but they didn’t think too much of themselves and came to the market humble but strong, and now they have families. Do you not think that I want that for you? So, I regret to inform you that I will no longer be able to assist you. For future reference, if you do decide to go with another matchmaker, you need to remember no one wants to be with someone that thinks way too much of themselves. If you really want a family like you said, you need to display a bit more
humility and put yourself at the same level as other suitable homes in the neighborhood. By thinking too much of yourself you’re not even competition to them. I guarantee you if you come down to their level, you will give them a reason to be concerned. Because due to your location and your upgrades you have a lot more to offer. Your prospective family needs to feel comfortable with you, and feel like they’re getting a fair deal in today’s market. If you do decide that I am right and would consider putting yourself at the same level as those in your neighborhood, I know I could help you find the right family, no problem. But as long as you think too much of yourself, we are just wasting each other’s time.
Sincerely, Your Realtor.

Sustainability partners ink $50M grant contract with USDA
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, one of the largest dairy co-ops in the country, and Farmers for Sustainable Food, a nonprofit organization of food system partners, today celebrated a milestone in an up to $50 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a broad climate-smart initiative. Following months of negotiating and planning, the partners announced today Edge has officially signed an agreement with USDA for its new climate-smart grant.
Under this grant, Edge will spearhead a multipartner project - Farmer-led Climate Smart Commodities Initiative: Building Success from the Ground Up - aimed at expanding climatesmart markets and establishing dairy and beet sugar as climate-smart commodities. The co-op applied for the grant last year through the USDA’s new Partnerships for ClimateSmart Commodities program. 14 partners — including FSF — will join dozens of supporting companies, organizations, government agencies and others to participate in the program. The grant was one of 70 announced last fall.
The initiative will build off a first-of-itskind Framework for Farm-Level Sustainability Projects, which helps farmers determine what climate-smart production practices are
most effective for their farms and provides tools to document the environmental and financial effects. The framework, developed in partnership between Edge and FSF, is currently being applied in projects involving farmers and others in the dairy food supply chain across the Upper Midwest.
Brody Stapel, president of Edge, made the following statement:
“USDA’s investment into building a stronger food supply chain has opened doors for farmers to continue adapting to the modern marketplace, one continually demanding sustainably produced food. Edge and its partners have spent over seven years building a nationally recognized model for high-impact, tailored agricultural sustainability projects, and we have proven its success in a network of farmer-led conservation groups. This grant will allow us to greatly expand our efforts, connecting farmers with tools and resources to implement even more climate-smart practices and verify their impact. We thank USDA for their commitment to our nation’s farmers and look forward to working with them — and all our other partners in this initiative — to build more sustainable farms.”

1 percent grocery tax to resume, gas tax to increase as new fiscal year begins July 1
By JERRY NOWICKI Capitol News Illinois jnowicki@capitolnewsillinois.com
SPRINGFIELD – A new state fiscal year will begin July 1, ushering in the reinstatement of a 1 percent tax on groceries and a second increase to the state’s motor fuel tax in 2023.
Amid record-high inflation last spring, the General Assembly temporarily waived Illinois’ grocery tax for the coming fiscal year and delayed the annual increase in the state’s motor fuel tax for six months. Democrats introduced both those measures as part of a larger tax relief package that drew criticisms for its proximity to the November general election.
“What we did last year was a temporary measure because we had very high inflation,” Pritzker said when asked at an unrelated news conference Tuesday whether the changes were election-related. “Inflation, you may notice, has come down.”
Inflation was approaching 9 percent when the tax relief plan passed last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, but it was 4 percent last month when the fiscal year 2024 was budget passed.
The Pritzker administration estimated at the time the temporary pause on the grocery tax would cost the state $400 million. Most grocery tax revenues are distributed to local governments, so last year lawmakers directed state general revenue funds to reimburse local governments for any financial hit they would have taken due to the pause.
“I would like very much to eliminate entirely the grocery tax, but it is a matter of local governments and what they would do if they didn’t have that income as a result of the grocery tax,” Pritzker said, faulting Republicans for “complaining” about the tax being reimposed without offering revenue alternatives.
The motor fuel tax on gasoline, gasohol and compressed natural gas, meanwhile, will
increase by 3.1 cents on July 1, to 45.4 cents per gallon. The tax rate for diesel fuel will also increase by 3.1 cents, to 52.9 cents per gallon.
The automatic increase in the fuel tax at the beginning of the new fiscal year is an annual process that became law in 2019 with bipartisan support. Lawmakers doubled the motor fuel tax and indexed it to increase at the rate of the federal government’s Consumer Price Index each year.
The motor fuel tax revenue, combined with one-time increases to license and registration fees that took effect in 2020, provided the funding backbone of the state’s $33.2 billion six-year infrastructure plan for road and bridge upkeep, dubbed Rebuild Illinois.
According to the governor’s office, Rebuild Illinois has funded $10.9 billion of upgrades as of March 31, including 4,913 miles of roads, 479 structures, and 709 other safety improvements.
Last year’s July 1 motor fuel tax increase was delayed six months, so the per-gallon tax already increased by 3.1 cents in January. Pritzker last year estimated that the temporary pause on the gas tax hike would have saved consumers about $70 million.
As part of last year’s tax relief plan, lost motor fuel tax revenues were replaced by money from the state’s Leaking Underground Storage Tank fund, which is historically paid into by fees and fines related to underground chemical storage tanks, such as those at gas stations.

Forgive Others to Free Yourself
by Janice R Newman
There are not many of us, if any, that can say we have not suffered in our past from others who have hurt us emotionally, verbally, physically, or trespassed against us. As kids, it was not uncommon for a student to tease, bully, or humiliate a fellow classmate. As adults, in most relationships, either family or work, we encounter situations where we are hurt, betrayed, or wronged by others. Words and actions can cause a lasting damaging emotional effect.

Question: We just sold our home. It was stressful, but our Realtor has this stress with every deal. What do you enjoy about selling Real Estate?
Answer: Let me answer it this way: We are quite sure that we have the best job in the world! It’s not an easy job by any means. It takes dedication, patience, creativity, resourcefulness and a good sense of humor to do what we do each and every day. But when you take a step back, you realize that there are not many people who can say it is their job to help make dreams come true!
So, as we drive through our neighborhood this upcoming holiday or head off to the home of a family member or friend, we will be sure to pay special attention to the
smells from the BBQ grills and the sound of laughter from children running through a sprinkler or playing baseball in the street. Listen to neighbors chatting, dogs barking, lawn mowers humming and marching bands leading the parade, and then we’ll take a moment to smile and feel proud knowing that we have helped a countless number of people find the place they call HOME!

While the instinct to hold onto grudges may feel justified, if we don’t let them go, in the end, it only hurts us. We can’t change the past, nor forget it happened, but we can change our responses to pain, and how it affects our present. Choosing to forgive opens the door to profound growth and emotional well-being that can set you free from past transgressions. Forgiving others plays a pivotal role in helping us cope with past hurts and find healing from painful experiences. Forgiveness does not condone or forget the painful action but rather is about freeing yourself from the emotional burden and finding peace within yourself. It allows healing and for you to move forward.
It nurtures our resilience, compassion, and inner peace. It is a choice and act of courage that allows us to reclaim our power and control to open ourselves to greater love, joy, and peace.
Forgiving others can be a powerful way to free yourself from pain, hardship, and emotional baggage. Colossians 3:13 ESV instructs us to forgive others “Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive”.
It is not always necessary to communicate your forgiveness directly to the person who harmed you. You can choose to forgive someone silently within yourself without their acknowledgment or involvement. It’s not always possible in person or it can bring
additional pain or harm. Forgiveness is primarily an internal process for your own healing. Expressing forgiveness can potentially help foster reconciliation if desired or provide a sense of closure.
Past painful experiences can influence our present attitudes and abilities to function and prevent us from having better positive interpersonal relationships. By releasing the emotional baggage associated with unforgiveness, you create space for peace and contentment.
Ultimately, forgiveness is a gift you give yourself, freeing your heart and mind from the weight of past painful experiences and emotional burdens, to eventually finding peace with the past. It is through forgiveness that we find the strength to let go, heal, and create a future unburdened by the weight of past grievances.
I had to personally forgive people in my past for the pain they inflicted on me physically, mentally, and emotionally. By choosing to forgive them silently, it freed my mind from focusing on past wrongs and pains, and from projecting them into current situations with others.
Forgiveness frees you and allows for healing and reduction of negative emotions. It can lead to personal growth to reduce negative emotions such as anger, bitterness, and resentment that can fester or manifest in your life. Forgiveness can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, and depression, or promote overall emotional balance.
By forgiving, you interrupt the cycle of pain and negativity and create space for positive emotions, personal growth, and healthier relationships. It allows you to shift your focus from dwelling on the past, to embracing and living in the present. Remember Jesus commands us to forgive others, as He forgives us. So, forgive others to free yourself. I did! Y? Why Not!

We Try To Help
On June 27, 2023, I wrote a letter to a 75-year-old client in Crown Point, Indiana. In the letter, I explained that our firm is not responsible for filing claims. I am not trained to even check on claims under Medicare Advantage. But we care about our clients and I am willing to try to help him.
With some editing to protect our client’s privacy, following is the letter that I sent him. Notice that the problem is with a Medicare Advantage plan and NOT a Medicare supplement plan.
Your agent Sam gave me some paperwork about your problem.
You have a Medicare Advantage plan. You bought eye glasses at a store and paid for them. You want reimbursement from the Medicare Advantage insurance company.
On June 2, your agent did what you asked him to do. He emailed a copy of the receipt for the glasses with a request for reimbursement to you. He got no response
from your Medicare Advantage insurance company.
I have no training or experience is such a problem as yours. If you want to make an appointment with me at my office, I would call your insurance company with you to explore how you can be helped. If that does not accomplish something, I know I could help you to file a complaint against your insurance company with a government office of the State of Indiana.
Let me know if you want my help or prefer to work on the problem without me.
Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by correcting medical bill errors. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.

The expanding drought and crop condition ratings continue to trend in opposite directions as many farmers nervously await what should be the pivotal corn pollination period.
All 102 counties in Illinois are now fully engulfed in drought and abnormally dry conditions, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday.
Nearly one-third of the state is in severe drought, mostly from the Interstate 72 corridor to just north of Interstate 74 and along the eastern border of the state from northern Edgar to Lake County. And more than half the state (51%) is in moderate drought.
“This is something we haven’t seen in a long time — really intense dryness,” Trent Ford, state climatologist with the Illinois State Water Survey, told FarmWeek. “We’re about 8 to 10 inches below normal (precipitation) in some parts of Illinois. We’re flirting with 1988 as far as precipitation totals.”
In fact, average precipitation for the entire state from April 1 to June 10 was the second lowest on record dating back to 1951, according to the state climatologist. The only year it was drier in the past 72 years was 1988.
“The one thing that’s been a saving grace is we had moisture in the ground before this drought started,” Ford said. “It’s been the one thing keeping things alive. The crops are just
kind of hanging on in some places.”
Drought continues to expand; crop conditions deteriorate July is National Ice Cream Month.
But many farmers wonder just how much longer crops can hang on with no considerable moisture. The portion of crops rated good to excellent in Illinois as of June 20 plummeted to just 36% for corn (down 12 points from the previous week) and 33% for soybeans (down 14 points), the National Agricultural Statistics Service Illinois field office reported.
Nationwide, just 55% of corn was rated good to excellent as of June 20, which is the lowest rating for the week since 1992.
“We’re heading to a catastrophe if it doesn’t rain soon,” said Gary Steward, FarmWeek CropWatcher from Stark County. “I’m more worried about corn than beans, because August rain may make a few beans.”
Early-planted corn that was able to tap into some of the soil moisture generally looks better than later-planted corn in many areas. But growth of all crops has slowed in recent weeks, regardless of planting date, according to Gabe Glotzbach, crop specialist with Heritage FS in Iroquois County.
