As temps rise across the country, so do the risks for us and our pets, especially when it comes to hydration. Freshpet’s Dr. Aziza Glass is sharing 5 surprising tips that pet parents should consider this summer to help keep fur babies safe and healthy during these dog days of summer.

You are What You Eat – 70% of dogs’ bodies are comprised of water (more than their humans which range from 50 to 60%), so access to clean water is essential for all of us. We can’t say it enough! Dr. Aziza says many pet owners may be surprised to know that diet can play a big role when it comes to keeping them hydrated. Vetapproved tip: Fresh pet food, like Freshpet, has a high moisture content, using steamed protein like poultry and beef, providing 30% of their daily water intake by diet. Plus, it’s filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. Dr. Aziza says most dog owners don’t realize the vast difference in fresh and dry food, which gives dogs less than 3% of their daily water needs as a result of the cooking process.

Avoid Burn Out – Dogs, like their humans, can get sunburned, especially those with short, light hair. Limiting time in the direct sun is best. Vetapproved tip: If you’ve got to be out for more than 30 to 60 minutes without access to shade consider sunscreen made specifically for dogs and light clothing to help avoid damaging UV rays.

Side Step the Sun – Even with shade sources, the

heat can be an issue for us and our pets. If you need to get your steps in, avoid mid-day walks, if possible, and be aware of the temperature of the pavement as it can damage your pets paws quickly. Vet-approved tip: If your bare hands or feet can’t handle the hot surface of the street for 5 seconds, then imagine what’s happening to them!

Set up Cool Digs – Shelter is important but dog houses that lack circulation can become saunalike in the summer causing the dog’s temperature to rise quickly. Vet approved tip: If your pooch spends time outside during the day make sure their digs are in the shade and are elevated off the ground. Products like cooling pads and misting systems are available.

Watch for Signs of Overheating – Just like us, dogs can experience heat stroke. Excessive panting, disorientation and drooling can be a sign that your pet is getting too hot. If their breathing is unusually deep, noisy and rapid, they’re trying to get oxygen into their system. You can cool your dog down in a cool bath or with cool, wet towels and with cool foods and treats from the fridge. Vetapproved tip: Frozen mashed bananas, yogurt and pre-sliced moisture-rich pet food like Freshpet aren’t just great treats, they can also help cool your pet down when it’s hot outside.

If you suspect that anything is wrong, call your veterinarian immediately or go to your animal hospital.

Bishop Noll to Host Tea During Centennial Weekend Bishop Noll Institute will host Thee Alumni & Me Centennial Tea during its 100th anniversary celebration in September.

The fundraiser will take place from 1 to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 18, in the Bishop Noll STREAM Lab, 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond and will coincide with a weekend of events. Other plans include a gala dinner celebration Sept. 16, a 5K and Tailgate party on Sept. 17 and an outdoor Mass on Sept. 19.

Tickets to the tea can be purchased online at forevernoll.givesmart.com or at the Bishop Noll main office. Seating is limited and tickets must be purchased by Friday, Sept. 10. Tickets are $50 per person and include an afternoon of tea, savories, sweets, basket raffles, door prizes and more.

Guests will be served traditional tea fare, including chicken salad croissants, cucumber delights, fresh fruit, ham and asparagus rounds, sweet and savory pastries, and assorted teas.

Guests should bring their own tea cup to share memories. In addition, they will hear from speaker Terry McMahon Putz, a 1966 graduate of Bishop Noll, who will share some interesting

tidbits from Bishop Noll history she uncovered in her role as BNI’s centennial historian.

In addition to basket raffles, a raffle will take place for a custom-made, king-sized quilt featuring a black and yellow bumblebee theme.

Tickets for the raffle cost $5 and will be sold in the Bishop Noll main office. Winner need not be present to win.

“This event will be lovely. A tea is a chance to reconnect and give people who are meaningful in your life your time. That’s what it’s all about,” said event chairperson Dee Dee Ryder Buck, a 1972 Bishop Noll graduate. Buck, who used to own a tea room, feels that tea is a ministry.

“I’ve always tried to fundraise with the teas I’ve given so, of course, we wanted to do this for Bishop Noll, which is where our heart was for so many years.”

Buck previously organized teas for Calumet College of St. Joseph and Planting Possibilities.

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Educators, students, and their parents are gearing up for school again. Where did the time go? Soon we will be back into the routines and rhythms of the school season.

We’ve enjoyed a break from some of those routines and rhythms over the summer at our house. Maybe you have too.

But, I confess, it is easy to let healthy, even spiritual, routines and rhythms slide at the same time.

Maybe you, like my family and I, will be giving your routines and rhythms a tune-up over the next few weeks. If so, this is a great opportunity to think intentionally about the value of relational and spiritual routines you have let slide, especially during the pandemic. This is a valuable whether you live alone or with others.

Are you not currently in the habit of gathering with others for weekly worship at a Christian Church? Consider stepping out to do so.

Maybe you need to reclaim the practice of sitting down together regularly for device-free meals that let you shut out the world and re-connect with one another. You might routinely begin or end your meal together by reading from the Bible and praying to God together. Include him in your sit-down meal. These routines also set the table (pun intended!) for the practice of hospitality.

Maybe physical exercise has gone out the window for you and you’re feeling the need to get back on track. Or, maybe on track for the first time. There’s still time to sign up for the South Holland Fun Run (or Fun Walk) in September. There’s still time to pursue a ‘couch to 5K’ program. Or maybe, you just need to get out for a daily walk, either alone or with someone else.

On August 5, 2021, I reviewed a medical bill and other papers for a client from Crown Point, Indiana.

A hospital in northwest Indiana wrongfully billed her $511.13. The client gave me enough paperwork that I could prove that the bill from the hospital was wrongful and false. The patient accounts department of the hospital simply ignored Medicare’s ruling in order to bill our client $511.13.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, following is the letter that I sent to the hospital.

Our client brought to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $511.13 on Visit Number XXXXXX for services rendered on 05/10/2021. We believe your bill is erroneous. Here is why.

The client asked your staff if Medicare would definitely cover the service. She had the same service done at your facility for a few years.

Your staff assured her that it would be covered without first checking her record. That was unprofessional. If your staff had checked her record, you would have found that she needed to wait one more month to have the service covered by Medicare.

In addition to that, the Medicare Summary Notice states in footnotes that your firm is NOT allowed to bill our client for the service.

That is in footnotes K, L, M, & N of the claim with the original charge of $511.13. The Medicare EOB that your firm received should have exactly the same information as what the MSN form has.

For these reasons, we believe that your bill to our client for $511.13 is false. If you believe that we have erred in this reasoning or have missed an important fact, please respond in writing to our client. Thank you.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to help our clients with medical bill problems like this. If the insurance agent or agency that you use does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our agency?

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I need some sound advice about the current market because I think I’m going crazy.

Just when I already thought prices in my area were already double what the average income qualifies for in mortgage payments, I’m now even more shocked to see new listings that are $50,000 or more overpriced in desirable areas according to online valuations.

Why are seller’s agents overpricing the houses, according to fair market values from recently sold homes? How do they justify such prices?

Why do brokers encourage buyers to invest at these prices, when common sense tells me, if rates go up, and people are shut out of the market, there will be even fewer qualified buyers, so prices have to go down! Do brokers have any code of ethics for the crisis they’re creating in this market? Please tell me something to ease my misery about the current market!

Answer: You’re not crazy.

There are several answers.

First, why do you think online valuations are accurate? Do online sites have appraisers in your neighborhood who reported to them re-

cently, or do they work by statistics which may be out-of-date, inaccurate and not reflective of individual properties? Online sites work on averages assuming all homes are alike. They even compare regular homes to foreclosed homes, which is ridiculous.

Second, imagine if you were a seller. Would you hire a broker to sell the property for less than market value? If brokers are over-pricing properties then buyers won’t buy. Asking prices will soon fall if buyers just say no.

Third, home values are not based on a multiple of average incomes. They are based on what the market will bear. In effect, buyers are selfselected by their willingness to purchase at a given price and their financial ability to do so.

Seen another way, homes are not universally affordable.

As a buyer you must use your own judgment.

If prices make no sense to you, vote with your dollars and don’t buy now. Use the services of a Realtor, someone obligated to work in your best interest as a purchaser, to better understand local trends and to spot properties that meet your requirements.

Review your IRA, 401(k) Beneficiaries SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you’ve had an IRA and a 401(k) for many years, you may occasionally ask yourself some questions: “Am I contributing enough?”

“Am I still funding these accounts with the right mix of investments for my goals and risk tolerance?” But here’s one inquiry you might be overlooking: “Have I used the correct beneficiary designations?” And the answer you get is important.

It wouldn’t be surprising if you haven’t thought much about the beneficiary designation – after all, it was just something you once signed, possibly a long time ago. Is it really that big a deal?

It could be. For one thing, what if your family circumstances have changed since you named a beneficiary? If you’ve remarried, you may not want your former spouse to receive your IRA and 401(k) assets or the proceeds of your life insurance policy, for which you also named a beneficiary.

However, upon remarrying, many people do review their estate plans, including their wills, living trusts, durable powers of attorney and health care directives. If you’ve revised these documents, do you have to worry about the old beneficiary designations? You might be surprised to learn that these previous designations can supersede what’s in your updated will and other documents. The end result could be an “accidental” inheritance in which your retirement accounts and insurance proceeds could end up going to someone who is no longer in your life.

Furthermore, your retirement plans and insurance policy may not just require a single beneficiary – you may also be asked to name a contingent beneficiary, to whom assets will pass if the primary beneficiary has already died. As you can imagine, the situation could become quite muddled if stepchildren are involved in a remarriage.

To avoid these potential problems, make sure to review the beneficiary designations on all of your accounts at some point – and especially after a significant change in your family situ-

ation. If you see something that is outdated or incorrect, contact your retirement account administrator – or your insurance representative, in the case of life insurance – to request a change-of-beneficiary form.

And if you really want to be on the safe side, you may want to enlist a legal professional to help you with this review to make sure the beneficiary designations reflect your current family situation and are consistent with what’s in your estate plans.

In fact, if you’re already working with an experienced estate planning attorney – and you should – you might also pick up some other suggestions for dealing with beneficiaries. Just to name one, it’s generally not a good idea to name minor children as beneficiaries.

Because children can’t control the assets until they become adults, a court would likely have to name a guardian – one that you might not have wanted. Instead, you could either name your own custodian to manage the assets designated to the minor or establish a trust for the benefit of the minor, which can distribute the money in several disbursements over a period of years – which is often a good move, since young adults aren’t always the best at managing large lump sums.

If you’re like many people, you have a strong desire to leave something behind. But you’ll want to do it in the right way. So, pay close attention to your beneficiary designations – when you first create them and throughout your life.

Illinoisans say Walking Downtown More Pleasant Since Pandemic Restrictions Crowded streets after dark combined with drunk people spilling out of bars onto streets has often meant a daunting experience for people walking home after their evening has ended. Yet, around March 2020, as limitations were introduced to businesses such as bars and clubs, a strange thing happened – a tranquility descended on previously busy urban centers. Gone was the incessant hum of traffic, construction slowed and, devoid of intoxicated drunk people, towns and cities became pleasant places to walk through at night instead of hotspots for harassment.

Detox.net, a resource provider for addiction treatment, conducted a survey of 3,000 people which found that more than a third (38%) of Illinoisans say walking through their local town or city center at night has been a more pleasant experience over the past year than before the pandemic, owing largely to the restrictions that were imposed on drinking establishments such as bars, nightclubs.

If you live near your drinking destination for the evening, in theory, there should be no reason why you shouldn’t be able to walk home at night without thinking twice. This is provided you haven’t had too many drinks and are still able to remember your address - a previous survey

by LagunaTreatment.com revealed that 4% of drinkers admit they’ve forgotten where they live after a night out.

therefore, it’s understandable why a majority (65%) say they actively avoid these areas at night where they know people have been drinking.

Broken down, more women (82%) say they avoid these areas, as compared to men (63%).

Two-for-one drink specials can be tempting, and while alluring to bar patrons, more alcohol for less cash can come in the form of disorderly conduct and increased risk of damage to property.

Forty-seven percent of respondents say drinking establishments should be responsible if their customers leave drunk and damage public property.

It also appears that drinking patterns since the start of the pandemic might have lasting effects.

While many drinkers have been forced to drink at home over the past year, it appears many will continue to do so. A night out can come with a plethora of additional stresses, like keeping an eye on your belongings and drinks, watching how much you’re spending each round and, of course, how you’re planning on making it back home at the end of the night. However, more than a third (34%) of people who have been drinking at home during the pandemic say the biggest benefit is not having to worry about getting back once the night is over.

Nearly a third (32%) say the next best benefit of drinking at home is that it allows people to save money and 15% say it is more relaxing than being out and about. Another 10% said having free reign of the music playlist is the best part. Finally, 9% say the best part is not having to adhere to a closing time.
