BBB Tip: Beware scholarship scams when searching for financial aid.

Many students are still searching and applying for grants and scholarships to fund their college education. With an average tuition of approximately $25,000 at 4-year institutions, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, paying for a college degree is a challenging obstacle for prospective students. A challenge that is made more difficult by scammers looking to take advantage of students and parents searching for financial aid opportunities.

The Better Business Bureau receives numerous reports of scholarship scams every year. Multiple reports were submitted to BBB Scam Tracker in 2022, detailing consumer interactions with unethical businesses claiming to provide students with financial guidance.

For students struggling to pay tuition, a sudden offer of a grant or scholarship can look like a dream come true. But it could be bait for a scam. This con hooks victims with the promise of money, but upfront “fees” never actually materialize into those much-needed funds. In a recent twist, these scammers claim to help with student loan forgiveness.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) recommends caution when dealing with companies that offer assistance in finding financial aid opportunities. Students and their families should be wary of websites, seminars, or other schemes that promise to find scholarships, grants, or financial aid packages for a fee.

How the scams work:

Scammers typically claim to represent the government, a university, or a nonprofit organization. The details vary, but the con is the same. The scammer will pose as a financial aid representative using words like “National” and “Federal” to sound more official. They claim you have won a scholarship or a grant (without ever applying) and ask for payment of a onetime “processing fee.” In another version, the scammer pressures you into applying for a “guaranteed” scholarship or grant. However, there is a fee to apply. Time goes by once the fee is paid, and the money is never sent. When attempting to contact a representative, it is quickly discovered that the company has set so many conditions that it is almost impossible to receive a refund. In another variation, a check arrives for the scholarship, and instructions are included to send back payment for taxes or fees. The check turns out to be a fake, and you’re out whatever money was sent.

A consumer reported this version recently: “The business claims to have been around for 14 years, but the website has been up for two... The financial aid workshops are pitch meetings where they try to get you to pay $2,000 for help with college admissions, but it turns out that help is limited to exchanging text messages with an unknown person. The contract’s fine print states that the person you are texting is not a professional and has no expertise in college admissions or financial aid.”

Due to the sensitive personal and financial information provided for scholarship and grant applications, it is important to be cautious when choosing one to apply for. Of the 2.47 million full-time students enrolled in post-secondary institutions

during the 2018-19 school year, 84% were awarded financial aid through student loans or federal, state, local, or institutional grants. On average, students were awarded slightly over $5,000 from federal grants, such as FAFSA, and more than $11,000 from institutional grants. While the amount awarded varies depending on the institution (public versus private or two-year versus fouryear), applying for grants and scholarships is a great way to help ease the financial burden of attending college.

Legitimate companies are helping students find aid with some results. However, students and parents can usually find the same awards and others on their own by searching online. Prospective college financial aid offices can also help, especially if it is a college the student is seriously considering attending.

It is generally free to apply for scholarships. Information is available online at studentaid.gov for the different financial aid options. If you don’t think you qualify for financial aid, review the Federal Student Aid website options, as many colleges and universities use it for non-need-based awards.

To protect students and parents searching for financial aid opportunities from falling victim to scholarship scams, the Better Business Bureau recommends following these guidelines:

• Beware of unsolicited offers. Typically, winning a scholarship or grant that wasn’t applied for is impossible. Ask how the organization got your name and contact information, and then verify it with the source outside of the email, phone number, or website they used to contact you.

• Take your time. Avoid being rushed or pushed into paying for help at a seminar. Use caution if a representative urges you to buy now to avoid losing an opportunity.

• Ask lots of questions. Be cautious if a company is reluctant to answer questions about the service or the process. If the company or seminar representative is evasive, walk away.

• Ask your guidance counselor or a college financial aid office whether they have experience with the company.

• Be skeptical of glowing success stories touted on websites or at seminars. Ask instead for the names of families in your community who have used the service in the last year. Talk to them and find out about their experience with the firm.

• Ask about fees associated with a professional financial aid search and determine if the company provides refunds. Get the information in writing but realize that dishonest companies may refuse to give refunds despite stated policies.

• Be aware that a check can bounce even after the bank allows cash withdrawal from the deposit. Check processing is a confusing business, as is the terminology. Even if a bank representative says that a check has “cleared,” it is not sure that it won’t be detected as a fake weeks later. One thing the account holder can be sure of is that they will be responsible for any funds drawn against the amount.

For more information and to learn how to protect yourself, Google “BBB 10 Steps to Avoid Scams”. If you spot a scam, whether you have lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your story can help protect consumers from similar scams.

US Dept.of Labor awards $1.3M grant to State of Illinois to accelerate gender equity, inclusion in infrastructure workforce

The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of a $1.3 million grant to the State of Illinois and Chicago Women in Trades to support the creation of equity plans and their adoption and increase women’s inclusion and equity in construction industry jobs. Funds will also allow Illinois to evaluate state and local workforce development programs for diversifying the clean energy and construction workforce.

Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su and Gov. JB Pritzker made the announcement in Chicago. They were joined by the department’s Women’s Bureau Director Wendy Chun-Hoon.

“To build an economy from the bottom up and the middle out, we need a workforce that brings in all of America and this grant and others like it help to do just that,” said Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su. “The Department of Labor is working closely with our partners at the federal, state and local level to ensure that workers, families and communities that have historically been left behind will benefit from the once-in-a-generation investments of the BidenHarris administration. I’m glad to be joining Governor Pritzker to make this announcement, which will bring more women workers into good jobs in the construction industry.”

Administered by the department’s Women’s Bureau, the Tradeswomen Building Infrastructure grant focuses on the historic investments in Illinois and throughout the nation by the Biden-Harris administration in infrastructure, manufacturing and clean energy in the $1.2 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. As investments continue, the grant will help ensure that women have pathways into higher-

Walking Out in Faith

The concept of “walking out in faith” is a power motivator that empowers individuals to take intentional steps forward based on their beliefs, trust, and faith in something greater than themselves. It’s a call to embrace the unknown and trust in the Lord for action, guidance, and courage. While many may find themselves lying down in defeat, sorrow, dissatisfaction, and helplessness, “walking out in faith” urges us to rise from these challenges and walk with purposeful intentions. It’s about taking that first step, even when the path ahead is unclear, propelled by the unwavering belief that faith propels action.

In the book of John, Jesus illustrates the profound connection between faith and action by healing a man who had been afflicted for thirty-eight years. Jesus teaches the importance of faith. In a poignant display of the power of faith, Jesus asks the man if he desires to be healed. “He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” (John 5:6 NKJV). Don’t we all want to be made whole physically, mentally, and spiritually? But we don’t always say “Yes” to that simple question. The man wanted to be healed. Jesus provided another way for him to be healed when “Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed and walk.” (John 5:8 ESV).

To the amazement of those present, the man rose and walked, displaying the profound faith that transcended his decades of affliction.

Walking out in faith is more than a metaphor; it is a call to rise from our metaphorical “beds” of inaction, depression, and discouragement. Just as Jesus instructed the man to rise and walk, we are urged to rise and walk with purpose. It’s a declaration that God does not want us immobilized by depression, discouragement, or adversity. Instead, He calls us to action, encouraging us to overcome challenges, fulfill our purpose, and achieve our goals. Faith without action remains incomplete. If you never have the faith or courage to walk the first step, the next step

will never follow. The adversary may want us to remain stagnant, but by walking out in faith, we defy their intentions and disbelieve to embrace a path of transformation and fulfillment.

The analogy of walking out in faith also resonance with Jesus calling Peter to walk on water in a storm. This emphasizes that faith is not passive; it’s a call to action. Walking out in faith involves translating your convictions into tangible steps toward your goals. It’s an embodiment of courage, the courage to step into the unknown, just as Peter stepped onto the water, despite the tumultuous circumstances around him.

Taking the first step is pivotal, for it sets the tone for the entire journey. Rising from discouragement and inaction signifies a determination to overcome obstacles. It signifies a commitment to living out purpose and embracing a life that aligns with faith, beliefs, and action. This gives rise to transformation and fulfillment.

In essence, “walking out in faith” means rising above challenges, defying inaction, and stepping onto the path of purpose with unwavering belief. It’s a journey where faith propels action, where trust in the divine plan encourages us to move forward even when the outcome is uncertain. By rising and walking, we honor the call to fulfill our purpose, achieve our goals, and navigate life’s uncertainties with grace and conviction.

As we journey through life, we must remember that faith without action remains incomplete. Just as the man in John 5 and Peter on the water exhibited true faith by rising and walking, may we too rise above challenges, walk with purpose, and embrace a life that embodies faith and action. We are to be proactive and face challenges head-on with full faith and belief that we must get up and walk! Y? Why Not!

paying building trades’ pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and construction careers, while supporting the investments in American infrastructure and clean energy.

“I’m pleased that the Biden-Harris administration has recognized the hard work Illinois tradeswomen have put in for decades by offering support for the next generation of women training in a field that has for far too long excluded and underrepresented them,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “This is another example of how infrastructure investment, and President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in particular, have uplifted entire communities through an equity-centric approach, and I’m proud Illinois continues to play a major part in that work.”

Teams led by tradeswomen’s organizations will build equity plans, promote their adoption and guide programming to increase women’s inclusion and equity more quickly. Gender equity is an administration-wide priority.

“While women are half the U.S. labor force, they represent barely 4 percent of the skilled trades within the construction workforce,” said Women’s Bureau Director Wendy Chun-Hoon.

“This grant is an opportunity to flip the script to help more women gain access to these typically higher-paying jobs.”

In addition to bringing state and local-level infrastructure, labor and workforce training agencies to the table with pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs, contractors and building trades unions, the state of Illinois will work with Chicago Women in Trades to expand the parameters of their related work, which was initiated last year.

Question: I knew I would have to go through the buyer’s inspection when I accepted this contract, but now I am told that FHA has to inspect my Home and that the repairs they require must be completed in order for the buyer to get their loan. I am not happy about this. Is this correct?

Answer: First of all, congratulations on getting an accepted offer on your home. In many markets, that is not easy to do. But that does not mean that the deal will close. Contracts have contingencies that must be satisfied in order for a closing to take place. Example: Contingent on your buyer getting a loan, Contingent on a satisfactory home inspection, Contingent on your home appraising to at least the purchase price, etc.

If you have a buyer who is obtaining FHA financing, your deal is also contingent on you completing the repairs required by the FHA inspector/appraiser. The FHA inspector is an appraiser sent to determine the value of the home and look for significant deficiencies according to FHA criteria such as obvious

mold growth, chipped paint on windows older than 1978, broken glass, lack of GFCI’s by sinks, etc. If they find defects then they will require repairs which they will reinspect, to ensure the repairs were made correctly. These required repairs are usually minor if the homeowner has kept their home in good shape.

You are not required to do these repairs. You may say no and look for another buyer that is obtaining conventional financing or paying cash. The problem is that in many markets, the vast majority of all qualified buyers are using FHA financing.

The smart move would be for you to do the repairs and enjoy your check at closing.

PASTOR GLEN MCCARTHY WORSHIP SERVICES

It is not just wrong to cover up your sin. It is also foolish. “He who conceals his sins does not prosper” (Proverbs 28:13a, NIV84). The word ‘prosper’ also means ‘succeed’. It does not work. Suppressing guilt injures you, body and soul. In Psalm 32:3–4 (NIV84), King David admits, “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.”

You cannot hide your sin from the God. “Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord; how much more the hearts of the children of man!” (Proverbs 15:11, ESV). You cannot hide your sin from God, but nor do you need to hide your sin from God! “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, ESV). Praise the Lord!

It is not just right to confess your sin. It is also wise. “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13, NIV84). David testified, “I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,’ and you forgave the iniquity of my sin” (Psalm 32:5, ESV).

Take this proverb to heart. Confess your sins to the Lord. Renounce them. In other words, commit to turn from them to trust and follow Jesus Christ. Then, know that your sins are forgiven. May the Holy Spirit speak this truth to your heart.

Our new distribution plan has increased the availability of the newspaper as well as expanded the area we serve with added locations below. St. Anthony’s of Lansing Celebrating 10 year with Vitality and Experience

Celebrating a decade of warmth, camaraderie, and cherished memories, the St. Anthony’s senior community’s 10th anniversary party was celebrated on August 24th . The air was electric with a sense of accomplishment and shared history, as residents, staff, and families came together to mark this remarkable milestone. Highlighted by the presence of three remarkable individuals Vera Schmidt 100, Mamie Hollis 101 and Hellen Johnson 101. Each over a century old, serving as living testaments to the resilience of the human spirit. Their presence was a poignant reminder of the rich tapestry of experiences that had brought everyone together. Even in the 110+ degree heat the spotlight shifted to the main stage where the Jessy White Tumblers, dazzling the audience with their acrobatics. Gasps of amazement and resounding applause filled the air as the performers defied gravity with their flips, a mesmerizing testament to the boundless potential of the human body. The fusion of youth and wisdom, exemplified by the tumblers and the centenarian attendees, captured the essence of the community itself – a place where vitality and experience converged in a celebration of life’s journey. As the night drew to a close, hearts were full, and the echoes of laughter and awe lingered, foreshadowing another decade of togetherness and shared stories in this cherished senior haven.

Illinois Heat Wave is the Latest of Several Weather Extremes in the State

Illinois is roasting in triple digit temperatures this week, forcing the state and schools to cancel some outdoor activities and modify class schedules.

Every county in Illinois was under an excessive heat warning Thursday morning, with some areas expected to continue to be under advisory until at least Friday evening.

The heat index, a measure that combines air temperature with humidity, reached higher than 128 degrees in Galesburg Wednesday. Chicago’s O’Hare airport recorded an air temperature of 98 degrees, the highest temperature for Aug. 23 since 1947, according to the National Weather Service. The heat index there peaked at 116, just two degrees shy of the record high that came during Chicago’s infamous 1995 heat wave.

“Exposure to extreme heat can cause serious health complications, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke,” IDPH Director Sameer Vohra said in a Tuesday news release. “With dangerously high temperatures and humidity in the forecast, I urge everyone to take precautions and protect themselves and their families from overheating and heat related illnesses.”

Vohra added that very young children, pregnant people, older adults and those with chronic health conditions should be particularly wary.

IDPH issued several guidelines to protect against heatstroke and heat exhaustion, including seeking air-conditioned areas like shopping malls or libraries during the day, wearing lightweight and light-colored fabrics and reducing strenuous and outdoor activities, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

People experiencing body temperatures above 103 degrees, difficulty breathing, elevated heart rate, skin that is hot to the touch, dizziness, nausea or disorientation should call 911 immediately, IDPH advised.

The state’s emergency management agency also updated its website to point to a list of “cooling centers” around the state compiled by an interagency group, although as of Thursday afternoon the webpage does not list any cooling centers south of Urbana.

The state also canceled several upcoming outdoor events, including the Du Quoin State Fair

parade which was scheduled for Friday evening.

“With forecasts projecting a high of 100 degrees and heat indexes between 111 and 117 degrees, we feel canceling the parade is in the best interest of our parade participants,” Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II said in a Wednesday news release. “This is not to take away from people enjoying the fair safely, but to avoid a clustering of families along the parade route and parade participants in costumes and uniforms from overheating.”

The Department of Agriculture, which manages the fair in Du Quoin, also canceled Thursday’s Illinois Product Farmers Market in Springfield due to the heat.

Other state agencies have also had to adjust to protect workers from the heat, including the Department of Transportation. A department spokesperson said that, in addition to monitoring for pavement buckling, state crews and some contractors have had to adjust their work schedules to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Communities across Illinois are also being forced to alter school schedules to accommodate the heat.

Schools in Champaign-Urbana canceled class Thursday. Champaign’s school district reported “major failures” at two of their largest school campuses. In northern Illinois, Maple Park schools closed, citing “extremely challenging” circumstances for drivers and students on buses.

Beyond academics, schools have also canceled and modified plans for athletic events.

While the Illinois High School Association, which sets rules for high school athletics, does not track changes to athletic events during the regular season, IHSA spokesperson Matt Troha told Capitol News Illinois the heat has had a “significant impact” on IHSA sports.

IHSA requires schools to move practices and games indoors or cancel then if the “wet bulb globe” temperature exceeds 89.9 degrees. Wet bulb globe temperature combines air temperature, sun exposure, humidity and wind.

While the IHSA does not require schools to let them know of changes to athletic schedules, Troha noted that the association was anecdotally aware of many games being moved to later times of day or to different days.

Mrvan Statement on the Ongoing Steel Industry Discussions

Washington, DC – Congressman Frank J. Mrvan, Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, released the following statement on the ongoing steel industry discussions.

“In response to recent media reports regarding the potential sale of one of the last remaining domestic integrated steel manufacturers, it has been reported that potential suitors are headquartered internationally.

“I remain gravely concerned that our nation’s security is lessened when we allow foreign entities to have an outsized influence in America’s critical industries, whether it be in iron and steel, semiconductors, or other essential commodities, products,

and technologies. We must not ignore the lesson that COVID taught us about how our supply chains must have domestic capacity to meet the needs of our nation’s consumers and security.

“That is why I am proud that in my short time in Congress, we were able to pass significant legislation to address these concerns and begin to reshore and rebuild our domestic manufacturing sector and supply chains, all while strengthening our commitment to organized labor. The benefits of these investments are irrefutable, as we have seen the largest growth in manufacturing investment, employment, and increase in average hourly wage in a generation.

Speaking Of Seniors

I Did It! I Lost 40 lbs. in 2 Months!

Many seniors struggle with keeping a healthy weight. I was and am one of them. If we can keep our weight down, we would be healthier and spend less money on medicines.

I had a special problem with my digestion. My gall bladder was removed when I was 19 because I had gall stones. Since then, I learned that many other doctors around the world simply advise their patients with gall stones to drink Epsom salt with warm water because that usually dissolves the gall stones. I was treated the expensive and dangerous American way rather than the cheaper and safer international way. The expensive American way leads to digestive problems and a tendency to gain weight.

I searched and searched the internet for ideas to help me lose weight. On June 11, I weighed 253.6 lbs. On August 11, I weighed 213.2 lbs. I lost 40 lbs. in two months. How did I do it?

I combined keto diet, intermittent fasting, and mild exercise with 2 lb. dumbbells. That was it. Once I got advice on fixing my digestive problem by doing things many people don’t need to do, I started losing weight. I plan to continue until I get back to my active duty “Army

Reserve” weight of between 180 and 190 lbs.

Here are the people with videos on the internet that really helped me: (1) T. C. Hale (a health coach), (2) Dr. Mindy Pelz, (3) Dr. “Boz” (Annette Bosworth). The videos of these three people helped me the most. But I got good information from others, too. Here are some honorable mentions: Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Steven Grundy, Dr. Eric Berg, Dr. Mandell, health coach Thomas DeLauer, Dr. Frank O’Neill, Ken D. Berry MD, The Nerve Doctors, and the Buchinger Wilhelmi Clinic (Germany and Spain) studies on fasting.

The only thing that I suggest here is that any senior or younger person who wants to lose weight should start searching for a solution by checking the videos of the people who helped me. I wish you good health.

He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in medical billing. South Suburban College Empowers Students and the Community in Navigating Civility Amidst Turbulent Times

South Suburban College (SSC) is unveiling a series of engaging events celebrating National Civility Month throughout August. The college invites the public and students to participate in activities that foster respectful interactions and cultivate a civil environment. This initiative aligns with National Civility Month, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and unity in promoting a culture of civility.

August kicked off with a Civility Awareness Campaign across the college’s social media platforms on the first of the month. “In today’s society, mutual respect has become a rare commodity. As neighbors and citizens, we are responsible for nurturing our community by extending a helping hand, living by the golden rule, and choosing unity over isolated struggles”, stated SSC Student Trustee Jamesina Collier.

South Suburban College kicked off August with the following engagements for students:

Fall Term Kick-Off - August 21:

o Civility posters across the Main Campus

o Civility ice cream at the Main Campus for SSC students

o Civility swag bag distribution in the SSC Circle on the second floor of the Main Campus featuring empowering affirmations for SSC students

In addition to student-focused activities, the college will facilitate coffee conversations and employee professional development opportunities throughout the month. These initiatives aim to enhance education and awareness while providing a platform for collective dialogue promoting civility.

South Suburban College extends a warm invitation to the public to participate in the highlight event of the month:

Non- Violence Through Civility Panel Discussion

o Thursday, August 31, 2023

“Now is the time to reinforce our support for the American manufacturing industry that promotes the ability of workers to collectively bargain and negotiate fair wages, ensure safe working conditions, and secure a sound retirement and quality healthcare.

“As a Member of Congress I have consistently voted to support the American worker, and I believe we must continue to build on our successes and prioritize our national security. As we move forward, I encourage the Administration to carefully review any proposed action taken by the steel industry with these priorities in mind.”

To My Colleagues

As Realtors, I know that sometimes you feel like you are fighting an uphill battle in today’s real estate market. It’s hard to stay motivated after the deal falls apart or you run a buyer around for a whole day, just to find out that because of the market conditions it is impossible to purchase the condo they want because of the owner occupancy rate isn’t there for the complex. Constantly fighting with lenders for appraisal values. Explaining to shell-shocked sellers that their homes are worth less than they thought or owe on their mortgages. Our industry is like the stock market, sometimes scary to watch and even scarier to participate in!

I think it takes a very strong person, business wise and emotionally to be a Realtor today. You need to constantly reinvent skills and navigate through endless problems and rule changes.

I am blessed to have been in this business for 43 years. I have seen good times and bad, but I feel that we do not need ice water running through our veins and nerves of steel to survive in these interesting times. We just need a heart and an outlook that can be focused on the good we do when we have satisfied clients and a successful closing.

One of my recent closings helped a young

couple get started in home ownership. One of my closings helped wrap up an estate so the survivors could move on and another closing helped a couple move into something much better suited to their retirement.

It’s still a good business to be in…you just can’t spend too much time thinking about the lender who torpedoes the closing at the last minute, or the divorcing husband that files for bankruptcy in the middle of a sale, or the buyer that abandons you and buys a FSBO without telling you. This business is a lot like a walk in the park. You can choose to ignore the doggy poo and just step over it, noticing that it’s a beautiful sunny day. Or you can step right in it because some inconsiderate doggy left it there, and complain about the dog the rest of the day. I recommend you choose the first option – at least the smell won’t follow you around all day!

Get Involved in National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a crucial time to raise awareness, remove stigmas, and provide education about suicide. Having conversations about suicide is important because it reduces the stigma associated with the topic. By allowing for more open and honest communication, individuals with suicidal ideations can feel more empowered to seek help and are less likely to feel alone. Currently, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. For ages 1044, suicide is the second leading cause of death. Anyone can participate in Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. There are activities that individuals, schools, offices, churches, and all types of organizations can conduct to bring awareness to suicide prevention.

Visit www.jasonfoundation.com to download our Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Informational Packet. Look for Suicide Prevention Month under the How to Get Involved tab. Within the packet, there are ideas on how businesses, schools, religious

institutions, athletic organizations, and even your family can become involved in spreading the message of suicide prevention.

Also, on the Suicide Prevention Month page you can click on #IWONTBESILENT to learn about The Jason Foundation’s campaign to reach as many citizens as possible with the positive message that suicide is preventable and enable those citizens to reach out for help for their loved ones and friends. You can download signs, brochures, flyers, and stickers to display. There is even a user guide to help you plan for the month-long campaign.

The Jason Foundation believes that education is the key to prevention. Our nation should be familiar with the warning signs associated with suicide, suicide facts and statistics, and how to find help for those at risk. Suicide can be preventable. Together, we can save lives. You may even save your co-worker, friend, neighbor’s child, a relative, or even your son or daughter. Are you up for the challenge?

Should you invest… or speculate?

You’ll find some big differences between traditional and speculative investments — and knowing these differences can matter a great deal when you’re trying to reach your financial goals.

To begin with, let’s look at the basic types of traditional and speculative investments. Traditional investments are those with which you’re probably already familiar: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on. Speculative investments include cryptocurrencies, foreign currencies and precious metals such as gold, silver and copper.

Now, consider these three components of investing and how they differ between traditional and speculative investments:

The first issue to consider is risk. When you own stocks or stock-based mutual funds, the value of your investments will fluctuate. And bond prices will also move up and down, largely in response to changing interest rates. However, owning an array of stocks — small-company, large-company, international, etc. — can help reduce the impact of volatility on your stock portfolio. And owning a mix of short- and longterm bonds can help you defend yourself somewhat against interest-rate movements. When interest rates fall, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds, which generally — but not always – pay higher rates than shortterm ones. And when interest rates rise, you can redeem your maturing short-term bonds at potentially higher rates.

With speculative investments, though, price movements can be extreme as well as rapid. During their short history, cryptocurrencies in particular have shown astonishingly fast moves up and down, resulting in huge gains followed by equally huge, or bigger, losses. The risk factor for crypto is exacerbated by its being largely unregulated, unlike with stocks and bonds, whose transactions are overseen by wellestablished regulatory agencies. There just isn’t much that investors can do to modulate

the risk presented by crypto and some other speculative investments.

A second key difference between traditional and speculative investments is the time horizon involved. When you invest in stocks and other traditional investments, you ideally should be in it for the long term — it’s not a “get rich quick” strategy. But those who purchase speculative investments want, and expect, quick and sizable returns, despite the considerable risk involved.

A third difference between the two types of investments is the activity required by investors. When you’re a long-term investor in traditional investments, you may not have to do all that much, once you’ve built a portfolio that’s appropriate for your risk tolerance, goals and time horizon. After that point, it’s mostly just a matter of monitoring your portfolio and making occasional moves — you’re not constantly buying and selling, or at least you shouldn’t be. But when you speculate in crypto or other instruments, you are constantly watching prices move — and then making your own moves in response. It’s an activity that requires considerable attention and effort.

One final thought: Not all speculative instruments are necessarily bad investments. Precious metals, for instance, are found in some traditional mutual funds, sometimes in the form of shares of mining companies. And even crypto may become more of a stable vehicle once additional regulation comes into play. But if you’re investing for long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement — rather than speculating for thrills and quick gains, which may disappear just as quickly — you may want to give careful thought to the types of investments you pursue.
