Thornton Historical Society hosts presentation of “19th Century Artifacts”

THORNTON, IL – The Village of Thornton Historical Society invites the public to attend their free program “19th Century Life Through Artifacts” — presented by Michael and Mario Bovino on Monday, September 25, 2023, 7 p.m. at the Thornton Historical Museum, 114 N. Hunter Street, Thornton, Illinois. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served.

As self-proclaimed “privy diggers,” the brothers have undertaken a compelling historical research endeavor, using

Victorian-era maps for the precise identification of numerous properties within the region where they have unearthed a trove of remarkable artifacts. In a program like no other, they will deliver comprehensive insights, encompassing the meticulous processes of artifact recovery and the historical context surrounding these items. Together, these facets will offer a profound glimpse into the way of life during the period spanning from 1860 to 1890 within the Chicago and the Calumet region.

September is Suicide Awareness Month

Suicide is a global public health concern that transcends borders, cultures, and demographics. Every year, millions of individuals around the world struggle with the overwhelming emotional pain that leads them to contemplate or, tragically, attempt suicide. To address this grave issue and promote mental health, September has been designated as Suicide Awareness Month. This month-long observance plays a vital role in raising awareness, erasing stigma, and fostering a sense of community to support those in crisis.

The statistics surrounding suicide are both shocking and heart-wrenching. According to the World Health Organization, close to 800,000 people die by suicide annually, making it the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29. However, these numbers only tell part of the story. For every completed suicide, there are numerous attempts and countless individuals who silently suffer.

Suicide Awareness Month provides a platform to highlight the urgency of this issue and encourages open conversations about mental health. The more we talk about suicide, the more likely we are to break down the walls of stigma and encourage individuals to seek help when they need it.

One of the primary goals of Suicide Awareness Month is to destigmatize mental health. Far too often, individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts fear judgment or rejection if they disclose their struggles. This fear of stigma can prevent people from seeking the help and support they desperately need.

By promoting discussions and sharing personal stories, Suicide Awareness Month reminds us that mental health challenges are a part of the human experience. We all face difficult times, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It is essential to create a culture where individuals feel safe and supported when discussing their mental health concerns.

If you or someone you know needs help please call or text 998.

Appraisal Issues

In the South Suburbs of Chicago as well as many other parts of the country the lender’s appraisal becomes the litmus test to the price negotiated between the buyer and the seller. Fair market price is normally determined when a seller and a buyer who aren’t under duress negotiate and agree on a contract price for the sale of a property. If the buyer is cash and doesn’t need a lender in most cases, an appraisal isn’t done at this point, because the buyer and seller agree on the value of the property. If the buyer does need a lender, as most do, then the bank has to have a way to document the market value. That’s where the appraisal comes in. An appraisal is one person’s opinion of what a mortgage lender should be prepared to lend on a particular property, based on the recent history of sales of similar properties.

What can you do if you have an appraisal issue?

1. The Realtor can prepare and file an appeal through the lender. That means the parties submit additional information and request that the appraiser reconsider the value. Appraisers are human too and sometimes miss something or make a mistake just like everyone else. 2. The buyer and the seller can agree to reduce the sale price to the

appraised value. 3. The buyer can elect to come up with additional down payment and pay the difference at the closing table. 4. The buyer can walk away from the deal and get their earnest money back. The contract should have an appraisal contingency, and if the buyer is getting an FHA or VA loan, that appraisal contingency covers the buyer all the way to closing regardless of any other terms in the contract. If the house doesn’t appraise, the buyer gets their earnest money back. But they still lose the money they have invested in inspections and the cost of the appraisal itself. In conclusion, the best way to handle an appraisal issue is to avoid one! Both buyers and sellers should work with experienced Realtors. Real estate agents that work daily in the local housing market can counsel both buyers and sellers about realistic home values.

“Re” Word: Take Responsibility for Your Actions

We often find ourselves at the crossroads where our decisions lead to consequences, both positive and negative. Reflecting on my childhood, I recall the frequent discussions from my parents saying that I needed to “own up and take responsibility for my actions.” As a young child, all I remember was thinking why on earth would I admit to what they were accusing me of? I would surely get in trouble and subsequently face punishment. However, as I matured, I came to understand the profound importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions. It wasn’t just about-facing consequences but also the thought that if I didn’t, an innocent person would bear the blame and would endure my punishment instead. No matter what the action was I was responsible and accountable for the outcome and results good or bad.

By deciding to take responsibility for your actions, it shapes your character and how the world views you. Accepting responsibility empowers you to take control of your situation and your future. You become more proactive in making informed decisions and choices because you are accountable for the outcomes. This will lead to better decisionmaking and a greater likelihood of achieving your goals and aspirations. Being responsible decreases rash quick reactions and behaviors while increasing patience and logical thinking in making rational sound choices. This can lead to more positive outcomes.

You gain personal growth and development of your character when taking responsibility for your actions. It’s necessary to take responsibility for all our actions or inactions such as our choices on what to do with our money, what we eat, taking care of our health, who are our friends, or our actions at work. When you own up to your mistakes, you learn from them and are less likely to repeat those same errors. This contributes to self-awareness and self-improvement when you confront your flaws and work on their improvements. You build character by not running away from your mistakes and facing fear head-on. Our

character demonstrates a level of integrity, honesty, and accountability. It also brings trust and respect to our relationships. Those qualities contribute to the best versions of ourselves. Taking responsibility for one’s actions prevents the unintentional consequences of an innocent person being blamed or harmed for your actions. We often shift blame to someone else to reduce consequences for us.

Pointing the finger at a sibling or a friend to take the blame to remove accountability is not uncommon. In Genesis 3:12, Adam blames God for giving him Eve, who talked him into eating the apple from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (ESV). Also, in John 5:7, the man with the infirmity for 38 years by the Pool of Bethesda, blamed others for his reason that he had not entered the water to be healed when Jesus asked him (ESV). Neither man was willing to take responsibility for their actions. Avoiding responsibility and shifting blame onto others or external circumstances can have a detrimental effect on your character, how people view you, and future outcomes.

Our character is influenced by our actions on taking responsibility. We learn from our mistakes and attempt to rectify them can improve our personal growth, ethical character development, and achieve positive outcomes in life. Our actions influence others to do the same as setting an example for others by demonstrating our honesty, reliability, and integrity on justice and fairness. You cultivate resilience in learning from your actions which can foster becoming better equipped to face life’s trials with grace and determination. We learn from our setbacks and adversity to improve our overall influence and impact. Facing responsibility is not a burden, but a need to foster independence, growth, character development, and prevention of unintentional consequences of others taking the blame. We should foster accountability and integrity to embrace responsibility, which is a powerful tool to shape a better you, those around you, and a more fulfilling future. Y? Why Not!

Heart Smart

Do you ever wonder how God could possibly love you when you think of all the dishonest, hateful, and unloving things you’ve done in your life?

If so, consider this:

Abraham, who God promised to be the father of many nations, lied, saying that Sarah wasn’t his wife because he was afraid a foreign king might kill him otherwise. (Genesis 20) Moses, who God chose to lead His people out of slavery in Egypt, grew frustrated with God and was not allowed to enter the land promised to God’s people. (Deuteronomy 32)

Rahab, who as an act of faith hid Israelite spies in the city of Jericho, had made her living as a prostitute. (Joshua 2)

David, who the Bible calls “a man after [God’s] own heart,” impregnated a married woman and had her husband killed on the battlefield. (Acts 13, 2 Samuel 11)

Solomon, who God made the wisest king of his day, accumulated 700 wives and 300 concubines and sought after wealth, despite all that God had already given him. (1 Kings 11)

Esther, the queen God tasked with saving His people from mass genocide, slept with the Persian king to gain his favor. (Esther 2)

Peter, of whom Jesus said, “On this rock I will build my church,” denied that he knew his savior three times over in a misguided attempt at self-preservation. (Matthew 16, Matthew 26)

Paul, who shepherded many early churches, made a living persecuting Christians up until his conversion. (Acts 9)

Guess what? You’re not the first to commit terrible sins. But rather than give us a free pass to sin, these stories provide a powerful testimony of the power of God’s forgiveness and his divine purposes. Through Jesus Christ his Son, God offers salvation to each one of us, a salvation that replaces our dark brokenness with his perfect righteousness. This reflection is inspired by “The Dirt,” a song by The Collection.

U.S. Department of Education Announces Kindergarten Sturdy Bridge Learning Community

The U.S Department of Education (Department) is announcing the launch of the Kindergarten Sturdy Bridge Learning Community, a multi-state effort to make kindergarten a transformational experience at the start of each student’s formal education journey. State education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs) will be invited to participate in a community of practice where they can benefit from peer learning, receive technical assistance, and share best practices to transform how students experience kindergarten including the transitions into kindergarten and 1st grade.

“Getting kindergarten right has to be top of mind for all of us, because what happens there sets the stage for how a child learns and develops well into their elementary years and beyond,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “Ensuring that kindergarten is a sturdy bridge between the early years and early grades is central to our efforts both to Raise the Bar for academic excellence and to provide all students with a more equitable foundation for educational success. The kindergarten year presents an opportunity to meet the strengths and needs of young learners so they can continue to flourish in the years to come.”

Kindergarten is critical to our efforts to Raise the Bar for academic excellence because it opens the door to two timely and consequential opportunities to meet the strengths and needs of diverse young learners essential for later school success Kindergarten provides the first formal at-scale learning opportunity for students to receive many of the critical supports and interventions that are essential for on-track development. Children arrive at kindergarten from diverse settings and experiences, with a wide range of developmental and linguistic strengths, learning differences, developmental delays, and disabilities. In this way, attending kindergarten is a critical lever for meeting physical and behavioral health needs that would otherwise go undetected, undiagnosed, and untreated. Kindergarten also presents a crucial opportunity to build partnerships and trust with parents and families, and to work with them on nurturing the habits and routines, including everyday attendance, that are essential to accelerating learning recovery and assuring early and long-term school success.

This announcement comes as Secretary Cardona is embarking on his “Back to School Bus Tour 2023: Raise the Bar” featuring stops in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Throughout the week, Secretary Cardona, Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten, and Under Secretary James Kvaal will join national, state, and local school leaders to speak with students, parents, and educators for events that celebrate the back-to-school season and underscore the Administration’s commitment to helping students recover from the impacts of the

pandemic and continue on the road to success.

As part of the bus tour, Administration officials will highlight academic and mental health programs and efforts to recruit and support educators funded by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which provided historic resources to K-12 schools, colleges, and universities to reopen schools and help students of all ages recover.

Many states and school districts across the country are already making progress on these opportunities. The Kindergarten Sturdy Bridge Learning Community builds on the U.S. Department of Education’s continued commitment to advancing early learning and school readiness for the nation’s youngest learners. In December 2021, the Department launched two new multistate communities of practice to support states in addressing the impact of lost instructional time from the pandemic on students’ mental health and academic well-being. The Department has also been working with states and stakeholders to identify ways to leverage federal funding to support high quality early learning and the early learning workforce, including by leveraging $1 billion in Title IV, Part A funds of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to support preschoolaged students who are served by high-need LEAs through a range of allowable activities that encourage students’ healthy growth and development.

The Biden-Harris Administration has also proposed a first-ever preschool incentive demonstration program at the U.S. Department of Education to expand access to high-quality preschool in school and community-based settings for children eligible to attend Title I schools. This proposed $500 million investment in President Biden’s FY24 budget request to Congress would further support school districts and participating schools in aligning high-quality preschool programs with kindergarten through 3rd grade instruction, facilitating a successful transition from preschool to kindergarten and from kindergarten to 3rd grade. Consistent with President Biden’s Executive Order on Increasing Access to High-Quality Care and Supporting Caregivers—a first of its kind, governmentwide commitment to support caregivers, direct care workers, and families caring for children, people with disabilities, and aging loved ones— this fall, the Department will issue additional guidance to school districts and grantees on utilizing federal funds to expand access to highquality preschool in high-need schools. Additionally, the Department’s current Full Service Community Schools competition includes an invitational priority for applicants to focus on effective strategies for transition between early childhood settings and the early grades, promoting cross-sector collaboration and family engagement . Awards will be issued in late 2023.

Typed the Letter

On September 5, 2023, an 86-year-old client from Crown Point brought me the claim reports that I helped her order from Medicare. After reviewing the forms, I decided that it would be better if I wrote a letter for our client to sign for sending to her doctor. I thought that would make a stronger impression on the doctor.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I typed for her to sign. I made copies for her and the file before I mailed the letter.

Why do you employ people to file Medicare claims when they don’t know how to file claims with Medicare?

I just got my Medicare Summary Notice forms for the dates of service that you billed a balance to me. Each of the items that your firm billed to me were denied by Medicare because your firm filed the claim without information to justify the medical need for that service. The Medicare EOB that your firm got for each service should have exactly the same information that is on my Medicare Summary Notice reports.

For date of service May 19, 2022, Medicare ruled that you filed two items incorrectly and that “The information provided does not support the need for this service or item.”

For date of service August 18, 2022, one item was rejected by Medicare for the same reason – your firm failed to state a medical need for the service.

For date of service November 17, 2022,

two items were rejected by Medicare for that reason – your firm failed to state a medical need for the service.

For date of service February 1, 2023, one item was rejected by Medicare for the same reason – your firm failed to state a medical need for the service.

Your firm failed to file the claims correctly and you want me to pay the balances caused by your staff or claims contractor who failed to do the job correctly. If your firm knew or suspected that Medicare would not cover the service, then you should have explained that to me and had me sign an Advance Beneficiary Notice form. I don’t remember signing any such form. You should cancel the bill because your firm’s mistakes caused the balances.

All the help I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps all clients with such medical billing problems at no charge to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If the insurance agent or agency that you use does not give this high level of customer service, why don’t you switch to our insurance agency?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients of that firm save over three million dollars by correcting medical bill problems. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

An Original Comedy Premiering in Northwest Indiana

Bold Lips Entertainment presents Mindy’s Bachelorette Party: An Interactive Play. As an original comedy written by a local playwright, Mindy’s offers a unique alternative for Lake County residents looking for new entertainment options. “The show feels more like a fun night out with friends than a traditional theater experience,” the director and playwright, Cari Labok of Highland, commented. Marilyn Catinella, Labok’s business partner and assistant director of Mindy’s, notes, “One of our goals was to bring theater to the masses, so Mindy’s is great for anyone whether you are a regular theatergoer or not.”

The show centers around Mindy Morrison (Kristin Duncan of Merrillville), a people pleasing bride-to-be trying to hold it all together as the big personalities in her separate worlds collide. Her maid of honor Liza (Brizeida Bueno of Hammond) is the ultimate diva who clashes with Mindy’s other bridesmaids- Denise, a nerdy granola girl (split role played by Jill Ritchie of Chesterton and Joy Scott of South Haven) and Margo, a snarky artist (Myanne Zachary of Munster). Mindy’s mom Jodi (Marilyn Catinella of Munster), a wild party girl, and Mindy’s holier-than-Thou future mother-in-law Helen (Laura Mazzuca Toops) also butt heads due to their drastically different approaches to motherhood. James Rhoten of Highland, King David Lane of Lake Station, Ray Huntington of Robertsdale, and Michael Depriest Reed of Robbins round out this hilarious ensemble cast.

A unique feature of the show is the interactive nature. “The cast treats the audience like old friends of the bride-to-be,” Labok says. “Mindy could be your neighbor, cousin, co-worker, or former roommate. The possibilities are endless.” Catinella added, “All of the guests are eating and drinking during the show like they would at a real bachelorette party, which also adds to the immersion.” “Short form improv games are baked into the script, audience suggestions are used to add to the drama, and so the show is slightly different every time you see it,” Labok added.

Unlike traditional theater productions, Mindy’s is performed at three different locations throughout Northwest Indiana: Bullpen Luxury Bar & Grill on Sept 9th at 3pm, White Rhino Bar & Grill on Sept 14th at 7pm, and Malt Brothers Brewing on Sept 30th at 7pm. Lincoln Park Zoo Announces

First-Ever Zoo-Based Memory Enrichment Program for Individuals Living with Dementia

CHICAGO (August 29, 2023) – Lincoln Park Zoo is excited to announce Memory Enrichment, a free, monthly program for people living with Dementia along with their family, friends, and care partners. This new pilot program fosters a safe and welcoming space for guests to connect with wildlife and build community through socialization, set each month in a private space on zoo grounds with views of the animals.

“We know through research that when people living with Dementia are able to mindfully connect with nature, it improves their disposition and provides crucial mental stimulation,” Hart Prins Accessibility and Inclusion Manager Bill Green said. “We have the unique opportunity at Lincoln Park Zoo to provide that connection for people living with Dementia and their care networks and give attendees unique opportunities to learn about the plants and animals on site, all in an inclusive environment.”

Memory Enrichment, which takes place on the third Friday of every month, is facilitated by trained staff and mirrors common practices found in memory cafes in dementia-friendly cities. However, it is a first-of-its-kind program at a zoo or aquarium. The program melds community building with education opportunities, multi-sensory experiences, and low-impact physical activity. Attendees will have opportunities to share their experiences with each other, while also participating in engaging lessons on animals, plants, zoo history, and more. All Memory Enrichment programming has been developed in consultation with Sunrise Senior Living.

Memory Enrichment is the latest offering from Lincoln Park Zoo that fosters accessibility and creates a welcoming space for guests of all abilities and backgrounds.

Sensory-Friendly Hours is a quarterly program inviting guests with sensory processing disabilities, neurodiversity, and other disabilities to experience the zoo with reduced environmental stimulations and reduced crowd sizes. The special Sensory-Friendly Night at ZooLights Presented by ComEd and Invesco QQQ on December 6 allows attendees of all ages to enjoy the zoo’s premier holiday offering with reduced crowds, reduced music volume and noises, and static lights, while maintaining full staffing numbers to support guests throughout the night.

ASL interpretation is offered at the zoo

Camille Claudel Exhibition at the Art Institute in Chicago from Oct. 7th- Feb. 19th

through a partnership with Columbia College’s ASL Department. Through this partnership, Columbia students on a provisional license provide ASL interpretation during Guest Engagement demonstrations across the zoo, such as Seal Training and Feeding and Monkey Cognition. Interpretation services are integrated into select demonstrations throughout the week so that guests do not need to schedule an interpreter ahead of their visit. Guests are still welcome to request a professional interpreter in advance or inquire about what days interpreters will already be on-site by emailing access@ lpzoo.org.

Lincoln Park Zoo has earned its Sensory Inclusive Certification from KultureCity, the nation’s leading non-profit advocate for sensory accessibility and acceptance. Free sensory bags are available to checkout at Searle Visitor Center, complete with fidget tools, noise reduction headphones, and other resources. Free visual schedules are also available for visitors who benefit from structure and a set schedule to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

There are numerous installations throughout the zoo that offer tactile elements and sensory experiences to enrich all guests’ visits, but particularly those using wheelchairs and those who are blind or have low vision. This includes hands-on signage and statues, as well as the new Houston Family Play Treehouse in Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo. The Zoo’s Accessibility Map can help guests navigate to these and other features on grounds.

Lincoln Park Zoo is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for everyone, acting on feedback from what communities ask for and tell us. As such, zoo staff, volunteers, and community members are always welcome to reach out to access@lpzoo. org to propose new accessibility initiatives, request specific accommodations, provide feedback, or learn more about accessibility at the zoo.

CHICAGO—The Art Institute of Chicago is pleased to announce Camille Claudel, on view from October 7, 2023 through February 19, 2024. This exhibition is the first comprehensive North American show focused solely on Camille Claudel’s work in 35 years. It will include nearly 60 sculptures that demonstrate the broad range of genres, formats, and materials in which Claudel conceived her work and executed with brilliant technique.

While she was among the most daring and visionary French artists of the late nineteenth century, Claudel’s work has largely been characterized by her tumultuous life—her relationship with sculptor Auguste Rodin and the disruption of her career as she spent the last 30 years of her life in a psychiatric facility. This exhibition will include her best known compositions and span the entirety of her brief but consequential body of work created between the 1880s and 1913. Her work was first shown in the United

States at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and now, on the 130th anniversary of that display, the Art Institute of Chicago will bring the largest collection of her work under one roof back to Chicago. Only seven museums in the United States currently hold sculptures by Claudel, making this presentation of more than half her entire body of work a rare retrospective of this underrecognized artist.

“Camille Claudel’s work has historically been associated with Rodin’s reputation and overshadowed by her biography, but she was a fiercely independent and forward-thinking creator,” said Emerson Bowyer, Searle Curator of Painting and Sculpture of Europe at the Art Institute of Chicago. “Her brilliantly expressive depictions of the human form convey complex and powerful emotions that remain universal in their appeal.”

This exhibition seeks to reevaluate her work and reposition it within a more complex genealogy of modernism. The Art Institute of Chicago’s Emerson Bowyer curated this exhibition in collaboration with Anne-Lise Desmas, Senior Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The show will travel following the close in Chicago and be on view at the Getty from April 2 through July 21, 2024.

“With her daring and innovative creations, Claudel was among the most important sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when very few women achieved notoriety in her field,” said Anne-Lise Desmas, Senior Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Getty Museum. “We cannot wait for U.S. audiences in two major cities to encounter her groundbreaking art.”

The exhibition will be organized chronologically and thematically with key works to demonstrate the broad range of genres, formats, and materials in which Claudel conceived her sculptures, enhancing the importance and novelty of her creations.

Camille Claudel is accompanied by a scholarly catalog with essays by specialists on Claudel, newly translated letters written by the sculptor, and a contribution by artist Kiki Smith.

BBB Tip: 10 Tips to Avoid Buying Flood Damaged Cars

Flooding problems may lead to scam artists attempting to pawn off flood-damaged vehicles as standard secondhand cars. These vehicles typically show up at auto auctions, used car dealerships, and classified ads. Unsuspecting consumers, particularly those living in regions of the country unaffected by hurricanes or flooding, are often fooled by fresh upholstery, new carpeting, and bargain prices.

Once the owners of damaged cars settle with the insurance companies, the vehicles are sometimes refurbished and resold. Flooded cars are often transported well beyond the original region where the flood or major storm occurred to locations where consumers may be less aware of the damage and what warning signs to look for. Sometimes, a middleman buyer intentionally hides a car’s history as a flood-damaged vehicle through a process known as “title washing” and sells it to an unsuspecting buyer in a state unaffected by the disaster. Among many possible mechanical problems faced by flooded cars, corrosion can take years to surface eventually, when it can cause electrical and mechanical problems. By the time the issues become apparent, the seller is gone, and the new owner is left with an unreliable vehicle and no recourse against the seller.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) strongly recommends used car buyers to be cautious of unscrupulous businesses and individuals who may try to sell flood-damaged cars as standard secondhand cars without revealing the vehicles’ history. When importing a motor vehicle into Canada -- whether it’s from an area affected by flooding or not -- check with the federal Registrar of Imported Vehicles before you purchase a vehicle.

BBB has the following tips for car shoppers to determine if a used car is flood-damaged:

• Ask to see the title. Check the date and place of transfer, verifying where the car came from. Ask questions if the title is stamped “salvage” or arrived from a recently flood-damaged state. Consider purchasing a vehicle history report, which includes information if the car has ever been tagged as “salvage” or “flood damaged” in any state.

• Carefully check the dashboard. Examine all gauges to ensure

they are accurate and there are no signs of water. Look for indications that the dashboard may have been removed.

• Check the electronic components. Test the lights, windshield wipers, turn signals, cigarette lighter, radio, heater, and air conditioner several times to ensure they work. Also, flex some wires under the dash to see if they bend or crack since wet wires become brittle upon drying.

• Check the interior spaces. Look in the trunk, glove compartment, and beneath the seats and dash for signs of mud, rust, or water damage. Check for open drainage holes in the bottom of the vehicle.

• Check the condition of the fabrics. Look for discolored, faded, or mildewed upholstery and carpeting. Recently shampooed carpets may be cause for concern. Carpeting that has been replaced may fit too loosely or not match the interior color.

• Get a vehicle history report from a database service. The National Insurance Crime Bureau’s (NICB) free database lists flood damage and other information. But note that NICB reports are only helpful if the car is insured. If an uninsured flooddamaged car owner tries to sell it on the open market and you’re the buyer, you may never know there’s a problem until things like the electrical system go bad.

• Remember to check under the hood. Look for standing water, mud, or grit in the spare tire wheel well or around the engine compartment under the hood.

• Do a smell test. A heavy aroma of cleaners and disinfectants is a sign there may be a mold or odor problem.

• Research the dealer. Always check out the BBB Business Profile of the dealer at BBB.org.

• Get an inspection. Before buying any used car, consider having a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic.

If you spot a scam, whether you have lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud. ftc.gov. 5 Ways to Get Your Pet Ready for Fall

Pets provide unconditional love to their companions; in return, it’s important to make sure they live happy and healthy lives by providing the best care possible. This means making sure that in addition to food, treats and toys, they receive daily care for their eyes, ears and overall health.

With a desire to bring a dog into his family’s lives, Albert, a Bausch + Lomb employee, rescued a terrier mix named Watson. However, it soon became apparent Watson needed some extra love and care to help protect his eyes and ears from irritation and excess buildup. When finding a remedy proved difficult, Albert worked with veterinarians to develop Project Watson Health Care for Dogs, a comprehensive line of quality products targeting these specific areas.

To help ensure your furry member of the family has the best head to tail health possible, consider these tips.

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

Routine wellness checks are an essential part of your pet’s care. Annual screenings, even if your dog seems healthy, allow your veterinarian to provide vaccines to combat disease and uncover any health issues that may have otherwise gone undiagnosed until symptoms advanced.

Watch Your Pet’s Diet

Feeding your pet a proper diet based on his or her breed, age, size and lifestyle plays a big role in overall health. A balanced diet that includes high-quality food can lead to a shiny coat, healthy skin, bright eyes and may also help strengthen your pet’s immune system, maintain intestinal health, increase mental acuity, regulate weight, keep muscles and joints healthy and more.

Support Clean Ears and Eyes

Often overlooked, the eyes and ears are vital areas to the overall health and wellness of your pet. To help keep these areas free of any buildup of bacteria that may cause irritation, consider an option like the line of Project Watson Health Care Products for Dogs, which includes an eye wash, eyelid wipe, ear wash, ear wipe and supplements made using high-quality and naturally inspired ingredients.

Excessive blinking or pawing at the eyes can be signs of buildup, irritation or infection. Dirt and debris trapped around the eyes can also clump in fur, leading to skin irritation and infections while excessive tear production can lead to fur staining, which can develop an unpleasant odor. Eye wipes can be used daily to relieve staining and remove excess buildup. Washing your dog’s ears may help reduce dirt, debris and wax buildup; help prevent itching; and reduce the chance of infection while keeping ears smelling fresh.

Create an Exercise Routine

Walks, games in the backyard and social time with other pets can help keep your furry friend in good physical condition. While different breeds and species often have different needs, adequate activity can provide benefits beyond the physical, including reducing boredom, which can potentially lead to anxiety or destructive behaviors.

Prevent Pests

In addition to regular vaccinations, ensure your pet is up to date on parasite prevention. This includes fleas, ticks, mites, heartworm and more which can cause reactions ranging from mild to severe (or even fatal in some cases of heartworm or Lyme disease). Look for pests and skin abnormalities when grooming your pet and contact your vet if your pet excessively scratches, chews or licks his or her fur or ears, or persistently shakes his or her head.

Say I saw it in The Shopper September 13, 2023 page 11

If you own a small business or are selfemployed, you’ve always got plenty to do, but you can’t forget about the days when you’ll be less busy — that is, when you’re retired. How can you prepare for that time of your life?

One key step is establishing a retirement plan for your business or yourself. And thanks to the 2022 SECURE 2.0 Act, you can now receive tax credits for opening and administering a 401(k), SEP-IRA or SIMPLE IRA. These aren’t the only plans available for small businesses or sole proprietors, but they are among the most popular. Let’s look at each of them:

• 401(k) – A 401(k) offers several key benefits: First, any earnings growth is tax deferred, and your contributions can be tax deductible. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% penalty.)

If you choose a Roth 401(k), your contributions aren’t deductible, but your earnings and withdrawals will be tax free, provided you meet certain conditions. And a 401(k) offers a variety of investment options. If you have workers, you’ll need to consider whether to offer matching contributions, which are tax deductible to you, up to the limit of 25% of compensation paid to eligible employees.

But even if you’re self-employed, with no employees other than your spouse, you can establish what’s known as a “solo” or “owner-only” 401(k). In 2023, you can put in up to $22,500 as an employee, plus a catch-up contribution of $7,500 if you’re 50 or older, for a total of $30,000. Plus, you can contribute an additional 25% of earned income as an employer, up to an overall employee and employer maximum of $66,000 (or $73,500 if you’re 50 or older).

• SEP-IRA – An SEP-IRA may be attractive to you if you’re self-employed or if you own a business but have few or no employees. That’s because you must contribute an equal percentage of your own compensation to every eligible employee. In 2023, you can contribute up to $66,000 or 25% of your income, whichever is less.

• SIMPLE IRA – A SIMPLE IRA is easy to establish and administer. As with an SEP-IRA, earnings in a SIMPLE IRA can grow on a tax-deferred basis. If you have employees, they aren’t required to contribute to this plan — but you are. You must match up to 3% of employees’ contributions or provide 2% of their annual salaries, although you do have some flexibility.

If your business goes through a rough patch, you can temporarily decrease SIMPLE IRA contributions to 1% for up to two years out of the previous five.

Your contributions to your employees’ accounts are tax deductible, but in in terms of building resources for your own retirement, a SIMPLE IRA may be less appealing because of its contribution limits, which are relatively low compared to a 401(k) or SEP IRA. In 2023, you can put in up to $15,500, or $19,000 if you’re 50 or older.

You should consult with your tax advisor to determine which retirement plan is right for you. Your financial advisor can also help you explore your options. And the sooner you put a plan to work, the better.

Real Estate Questions & Answers

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Question: Since we bought our home, we’ve had an endless stream of maintenance problems. The house is only about five years old, but everything seems to be going wrong. For example, two of the faucets started leaking. Then one of the toilets became clogged. After that, the front door began rubbing against the jamb, making it hard to close.

This is the first home we’ve ever owned. We hired an inspector before buying it, but none of these problems was disclosed in the report. What can we do, now that we’re stuck with this lemon?

Answer: If the problems on your list were serious or unusual, 98 percent of the homes in America would be lemons. In fact, the symptoms you have noted would tend to make your home as normal as mine. If faucets, doors, dishwashers did not require periodic maintenance, that would be a noteworthy abnormality.

A common misconception among firsttime homebuyers is the expectation that homeownership is a turnkey operation, that a well-built house in good condition will tend to remain that way without timely offerings of effort by the owners. Homeownership, in a sense, should be viewed as a part-time hobby,

one that requires ongoing participation and weekly contributions of time, money and sweat.

As newly initiated homeowners, it may be time to buy yourselves a set of handyman tools and a book on routine property maintenance. Don’t try to tackle any serious issues such as electrical problems or conditions involving gas-burning fixtures. Items of that nature should be delegated to licensed experts. However, simple repairs, such as changing the washer in a leaky faucet, are skills worth learning.

You have embarked upon the lifelong pastime of homeownership. Acquiring the basic skills of common home repairs will increase your pride of ownership, save you worthwhile sums of money, and keep you from over-responding to minor routine defects. It is an ongoing process of learning. Enjoy the journey.
