Indiana American Water Company, a subsidiary of American Water Company (NYSE: AWK), today joined Gary Mayor Jerome Prince, community leaders and project partners at a groundbreaking ceremony to officially kick off a $24.5 million water main replacement project in Gary, Ind. The project, which will replace or retire older steel and cast-iron pipe that has experienced numerous breaks, will be constructed along 6th and 7th Avenue from Wabash Avenue to Kentucky Street as well as several north-south streets in the area. The work will retire approximately five miles of water mains from the early 1900s and install nearly 11 miles of new water mains, ranging in size from 8” to 36”, over the next three years.

Pappas: 36,000 properties part of Cook County’s first Tax Sale in more than two years, 19,000 owe less than $1,000 Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas will conduct the first sale in more than two years of delinquent Cook County property taxes on Nov. 5, 2021.

About $163.4 million in unpaid 2018 property taxes (that were to be paid in 2019) is due on 36,000 homes, businesses and land. Less than $1,000 is owed on 11,744 properties in Chicago and 7,700 properties in suburban Cook County.

Pappas is sending owners of those properties a certified mailing informing them that their unpaid taxes are scheduled to be sold, which would put a lien against their properties. It is the first step in a process that can end with the loss of a property.

Owners can avoid the Tax Sale by paying the delinquent taxes and interest before the sale begins. To see if your taxes are delinquent – and to make a payment – visit cookcountytreasurer. com and select “Avoid the Tax Sale.” You can search by address or by Property Index Number (PIN).

“About 75% of the taxes offered for sale are for properties in majority Black and Latino communities,” Pappas said. “That’s why Black and Latino Houses Matter, my program to help homeowners find refunds and apply for tax exemptions, is so important.”

Owners may be unaware the taxes on their properties are headed to the Tax Sale because the U.S. Postal Service has returned bills and subsequent notices on 17,702 properties.

Also, as many as 207 seniors may be missing a senior exemption and 184 seniors may be eligible for a senior freeze – two exemptions that could reduce their tax bill. “Everyone should visit cookcountytreasurer.com for more information,” Pappas said.

Per Illinois law, the annual Tax Sale traditionally is conducted 13 months after the due date but was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pappas plans to conduct the sale for 2019 unpaid taxes in May and for the 2020 taxes in November 2022.

Just a warning, there are some adult themes below.

90 years ago, a woman in the Philippines was raped.

Nine months later, that woman had a child — a child that grew up without a biological father. Decades passed, and that baby girl grew up, got married, and gave birth to seven children of her own.

Her middle child — the only girl of the family — grew up in the Philippines and eventually moved to the United States and got married. Here in America, that woman had three children of her own. The youngest of them was born 25 years ago, a sweet baby girl who grew into a beautiful woman.

Three years ago, I married that woman.

My wife owes her life — in a biological sense — to an awful, sinful event that violated her great-grandmother 90 years ago. But in a more ultimate sense, my wife owes her life to the providence of God. I can only imagine how my wife’s great-grandmother must have felt in her pain, shame, and desperation at that time. Nine decades later, I can’t help but cry when I think of how beautiful God’s plans are and how His promise in Romans 8:28 that “all things work together for good,” has been realized.

If you feel tossed about by terrible sin in your life or the lives of your loved ones, know that God promises that the suffering of His children is not in vain.

Joni Eareckson Tada once said, “Sometimes God uses what He hates to accomplish what He loves.”

No better example of that truth can be found than Jesus Christ on the cross. God used what He hated — sending His son to die an unjust, brutal death — to accomplish what He loves — you and me, freed from our sin and adopted into His family.

No matter the depth of sin and despair in your life, God’s love runs deeper still.

Managing Grief During the Holidays

MIKE BUDER Whether or not you’ve been following the real estate industry lately, there’s a good chance you’ve heard we’re in a serious seller’s market. But what does that really mean? And why are conditions today so good for people who want to list their house? It starts with the number of houses for sale. The latest existing home sales report from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) shows that housing supply is still astonishingly low. Today, we have a national 2.6-month supply of homes at the current sales pace.

Historically, a 6-month supply is necessary for a “normal” or “neutral” market in which there are enough homes available for active buyers. For a more local perspective, there are currently 96 homes MLS listed for sale in South Holland. In the month of July, there were 43 homes sold in South Holland. 43/96 = 2.2 – month supply of homes. Using this same formula for Lansing, it shows 47/124 = 2.6 month supply of homes. To help illustrate the extremely unusual market we are currently in…An absorptions rate greater than 20% is normally associated with a seller’s market while an absorption rate below 15% is typically associated with a buyer’s market. The current absorption rate for South Holland is 44% while Lansing’s rate is 37%, both are far above the benchmark for a seller’s market.

When the supply of homes for sale is as low as it is right now, it’s much harder for buyers

to find homes to purchase. That creates increased competition among purchasers which leads to more bidding wars. If buyers know they may be entering a bidding war, they’re going to do their best to submit a very attractive offer. As this happens, home prices rise and sellers are in the best position to negotiate deals that meet their ideal terms.

Right now, there are many buyers who are ready, willing and able to purchase a home.

Low mortgage rates and the ongoing rise in remote work have prompted buyers to think differently about where they live – and they’re taking action. If you put your house on the market while supply is still low, it will likely get a lot of attention from competitive buyers.

The holidays, as well as birthdays and other celebrations, are often difficult for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one, particularly during the first year of adjusting to life without them.

Establish Boundaries During the Holidays Friends and family may encourage a grieving person to participate in the holiday just as they normally would. While these intentions are typically good, it is important for the bereaved to set boundaries and focus on what they want.

While grieving, one should openly and honestly

discuss wishes with friends and family and clarify what they are comfortable with and have the emotional bandwidth to do.

Acknowledge the Loss Families can find ways to honor their loved one’s physical absence during holiday celebrations by incorporating their spirit into celebrations and holiday traditions. Examples of this could be decorating ornaments in ways that are symbolic of a loved one, cooking their favorite meal or making a memorial donation to a favorite charity.

Reflect On and Embrace Fond Memories Memories of a loved one, both from the holidays and other special times, are an important legacy. Rather than ignoring these memories, talk about them with family and friends. It’s OK to laugh and it’s OK to cry.

One way to facilitate this activity is with Remembering A Life’s Have the Talk of a Lifetime Conversation Cards, which can help families share stories and memories about loved ones and themselves. It can make for a meaningful activity during holiday gatherings.

If you plan to be part of it (ideally with another source of employment lined up), you’ll need to make the financial moves necessary to keep making progress toward your long-term goals.

Here’s some background: After a year in which the pandemic caused so many people to lose their jobs, the economy is opening back up, but the “quit rate” – the number of jobs people have voluntarily left – has been breaking records.

Some economists say this high quit rate is because people are confident of getting better jobs, with higher pay and more flexibility to work at home, or because they are preparing to start their own business or join the gig economy.

If you’re thinking of joining this temporary migration from the workforce, how can you help ensure that you’ll be financially stable and can continue to make progress toward your long-term goals?

Your first move is to look clearly at your financial situation.

As mentioned above, it’s best to have new employment in hand before you quit your job. Alternatively, perhaps you have a spouse or life partner who earns enough to sustain the two of you, or you’ve built up an emergency fund that gives you a cushion.

However, if your short-term income is less than you previously earned or you need to go without a paycheck for a while, could you still pay your bills? If you are strapped for cash, you might be tempted to tap into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. But this move will generally result in taxes and, if you are younger than 59 ½, a 10 percent penalty as well. Because of this, and because your retirement accounts are designed to be a financial resource after you retire, think twice before dipping into these funds if you leave your current employer.

Another False Medical Bill WOODROW WILCOX On September 2, 2021, I received a bill and worked on a case for an 82-year-old woman from Munster, Indiana. It was another case of a false medical bill being sent by a medical billing firm near Indianapolis on behalf of a medical firm in Lake County, Indiana.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the billing firm that sent the false bill to our client.

Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $XXX on Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on 06/07/21. The bill was dated 08/22/21. THE BILL IS FALSE. I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement plan insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. It reported that it paid this balance to your firm by check on 06/30/21 and that your firm cashed that check on 07/13/21. The check number was XXXXXXX. So, your firm had the money when you cashed the check six weeks before you printed and sent the false bill to our client.

You knowingly put a false bill into the U.S. mail. This is not the first time that I caught your firm doing this kind of thing.

Why aren’t you in jail?

Fix your bookkeeping and don’t bother our client about this bill any more.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” by helping our senior citizen clients with such Medicare related medical bill problems. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our insurance agency?
