Harris announces nearly $7.6 million in funding to local schools
HARVEY – State Senator Napoleon Harris, III is excited to announce that $7.6 million in additional funding will be awarded to local schools to help move toward fair and equitable school systems in Illinois.
“As a father, I want to ensure all of our children have the opportunity to receive an excellent education,” said Harris (D-Harvey). “The state’s budget serves as an opportunity to outline our priorities as a state, and I am proud to say that we continue to fund our schools properly to help support students and educators throughout our communities.”
In 2017, Harris joined the Illinois Senate Democratic Caucus in implementing an evidence-based funding formula —an overhaul of the way the state funds K-12 education. The law made school funding more equitable by calculating the needs of individual school districts and basing its state revenue on those needs. The formula takes into account a district’s total enrollment, poverty rate and number of special education or English language
learners, among other factors.
“Our schools place our children on a pathway to accomplish their goals,” said Harris. “This funding is a step in the right direction. It is important that we continue to look for ways to ensure our families have the resources and support to be successful regardless of their financial status or ZIP code.”
Nineteen schools in the 15th Senate District will receive funding support, including:
• Prairie-Hills Elementary School District 144 – $1,534,161
• Bremen High School District 228 – $1,531,016
• Homewood School District 153 – $ 922,409
• Dolton School District 149 – $719,985
• Beecher School District 200-U – $530,241

Cook Co.Treasurer Pappas to help taxpayers seek refunds during Sept. 14 phone bank with ABC 7
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas and ABC 7 Chicago will host an “Our Homes Matter” phone bank Sept. 14 to help taxpayers learn if they are owed refunds.
Taxpayers may call 312-603-5105 between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Cook County Treasurer’s Office. Phone bank representatives will help taxpayers search for potential refunds by checking whether property taxes were overpaid for the past 20 years. Callers can also discover whether they are entitled to refunds for missed exemptions for the past four years.
Samantha Chatman, consumer investigative reporter with ABC7’s I-Team, will report on the phone bank throughout the day. Phone bank callers may provide an address to researchers who can look up a parcel’s Property Index Number, or PIN. Phone bank workers will help callers by searching $84 million in available property tax refunds, checking eligibility for $34 million in missing property tax exemptions and verifying whether
a property is on a tax sale list due to delinquent taxes.
“Duplicate payments happen all the time, and many Cook County homeowners are unaware the county owes them money,” Pappas said. “One year my own taxes were overpaid because my husband and I both paid the tax bill.”
The Treasurer’s Office and ABC7 have held seven phone banks since 2021 and helped 14,080 taxpayers identify $28.9 million owed for overpayments and missed exemptions.
Owners of residential properties may be eligible for six types of exemptions: homeowners, senior citizen, senior freeze, returning veteran, disabled person and disabled veteran.
Second installment tax bills for the 2022 tax year are expected to be mailed on or about Nov. 1 and due Dec. 1. Taxpayers may also visit the Treasurer’s website at cookcountytreasurer.com to learn more about applying for refunds, missed exemptions and other services.

Question: We are talking about putting our home up for sale. My husband has deer heads on the walls of our foyer and Family room. He says the animals are a reflection of our lifestyle and it is what makes our house a home. I say it shows we are proud of killing animals and would be offensive to buyers. What is your professional opinion?
Answer: When it’s time to sell your home, you can invest a ton of time, energy and money into getting the place ready for sale. You might declutter, stage and even remodel the house to make it as appealing to buyers as possible. Sometimes, though, no amount of preparation can overcome something in the home that, rightly or wrongly, offends some buyers and gives them negative impressions of you and your house. Right or wrong, dead animals are going to offend many people. Remove the animal trophies and save them for your next home.
Live animals can also be offensive. We showed a home that had live rabbits running around the house. The smell was not good and the buyers walked straight out of the home. Another home had a large snake in a tank that was eating grasshoppers! Sellers---you are trying to sell your home. Let common sense prevail!
Flags and political posters can also be a problem. Freedom of speech is in our Constitution, but they can be offensive to buyers, so remove them until you move into your next home.
Other offensive items to buyers could be locked rooms that are not accessible.
Despite relaxed laws on Marijuana, these drugs are still federally illegal and their presence or evidence of use, including odors and paraphernalia can deter buyers.
Some sellers don’t realize they’ve exposed too much information. In others, sellers want to make a statement, even if it’s at their own expense. We tell our seller clients to depersonalize a house. It is crucial to make your buyers feel as though they could make themselves at home, move in and be comfortable.

Help protect finances of loved one with Alzheimer’s
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN
If you have a loved one showing signs of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, you’ll obviously experience some strong emotions — and you’ll likely ask yourself this question: What can I do to help? While there are certainly many ways you could provide assistance over time, there’s one area that might require your immediate attention: finances.
Alzheimer’s patients often exhibit a range of money-related problems. Here are some of the most common ones, according to the National Institute on Aging:
• Trouble counting change or paying for a purchase
• Difficulty in balancing a checkbook
• Confusion over bank statements
• Not paying — or even opening — bills
• Making strange and unnecessary purchases with a credit card
Of course, your awareness of these problems depends, to a great extent, on just how familiar you are with the daily life of your loved one with Alzheimer’s or similar dementia. But if you have noticed these issues, it may be time for you to act before things get worse — and they can get worse, because scam artists constantly target the elderly by making false promises, soliciting personal data, asking for money and even requesting changes in estate-planning documents.
So, what steps can you take? You’ll need to clearly communicate your concerns to your afflicted loved one, and you’ll have to get their consent for the actions you wish to take on their behalf. This may not be easy, but it’s certainly worth the effort.
Here are a few moves to consider:
• Set up auto-pay. If your loved one has still been paying bills manually, now may be a good time to set up auto-pay for utilities, loans and other bills.
• Open a joint checking account. By opening a joint checking account with your

On September 12, 2023, I was denied medical services at a clinic in Lake County, Indiana. But I understood why. I’ve been working with the Medicare system for over 20 years helping other people to fix Medicare federal foul-ups. So, I understood the cause and knew the remedy. Most senior citizens on Medicare would not be as mellow about it as I was.
Many politicians want us to believe that the Medicare system works all the time. It doesn’t. Believing that a human designed and operated system will work flawlessly is unrealistic thinking. When flaws are found, they need to be fixed right away. If the flaws in the Medicare system are not fixed, they will continue to hurt seniors financially.
During my first few years of helping our senior citizen clients with Medicare billing problems, I wrote an article in which I explained my calculations for the belief that just one reoccurring Medicare problem was costing seniors on Medicare over one billion dollars per year in false medical bills. The problem continues to exist. I have not been able to find any politician who wants to
take the lead in fixing Medicare problems to protect senior citizens financially.
In my case, Medicare was over six months late in updating my file. All the medical claims for services during that time period will need to be refiled once Medicare records are fully updated. I’ll need to wait ten more days before I can get medical services without another foul-up by Medicare.
A few months ago, I helped a client with the same problem. Because I helped him “kick” Medicare into updating his file, I was able to save him $34,699.79 in wrongfully calculated medical bills.
Forgive me if I don’t seem impressed by the Medicare billing system.
Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.
Part 2: “RE”Word: Take REsponsibility for Your Actions in BUSINESS
By Janice R. Newman, MA
In the fast-paced business world with a competitive market vying for a smaller consumer base, business success hinges on many factors, with responsibility and accountability standing out as critical elements. As owner, ultimately all the responsibilities fall to you as the foundational aspect of your position. Your actions and behavior play a vital role in the business and set the tone for the organization. Small business owners are responsible for the leadership role, empowering their team, establishing clear expectations, setting the standards and ethics of the business, and upholding the integrity of the business’s reputation.
loved one, or perhaps adding your name to an existing account, you can help ensure all payments are accurate and appropriate.
• Freeze credit reports. By freezing your loved one’s credit reports at the credit reporting bureaus — Equifax, TransUnion and Experian — you can prevent bogus credit lines from being opened in their name.
• Create a durable power of attorney. In the early stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia, your loved one could create a durable power of attorney and name you, or another close family member, as the “agent” — which means you’d be empowered to make financial and other decisions when your loved one is no longer capable of doing so. (A durable power of attorney could also be created in cases of advanced Alzheimer’s, but it can be somewhat more challenging.)
• Help establish a living trust. In addition to a durable power of attorney, a living trust can be valuable for families of Alzheimer’s patients. A living trust can hold a person’s financial assets and other property while the trustee manages the money and makes investment and spending decisions. A living trust can be complex, so before establishing one, you’ll need to consult with your legal and tax professionals.
When you’re dealing with the financial issues associated with your loved one’s Alzheimer’s or dementia, it can feel like you’re on a long road. But diligently seeking out the appropriate financial moves can help make the journey less stressful — for everyone involved.

Leading by example is one of the most impactful ways to instill a culture of responsibility and accountability for your business. Employees and customers look directly to the owners or CEOs for examples of the company’s moral compass and ethical direction of the business. We often see in the news heads of companies or spokespersons being charged with misconduct or making inappropriate personal comments that literally destroy the company. Your dedication to the business’s success should be visible through your work ethic and commitment to excellence, along with your willingness to take ownership of your decisions and actions. When you make a mistake, own up to it and take the responsibility of corrective action. This shows integrity and sets the standard for employees to follow.
Empower your employees by encouraging them to take ownership of their roles in the company. Build the company on a foundation of high values, character, and quality of service.
Invest in your employees with the necessary resources and career development training to help them excel in their roles. Create an environment where they feel comfortable sharing their concerns, ideas, and skills to reinforce their commitment to delivering highquality results. Establish trust in the company and foster a problem-solving mindset to inspire the team to be adaptable, open to change, and continuously learning and improving.
Jesus demonstrated in his three short years with the Apostles the importance and effectiveness of taking responsibility and accountability in a leadership role. Jesus’ character exemplified the Fruits of the Spirit, which he led by example for the Apostles. He set the tone for the ministry and instilled a culture of responsibility. One of the best examples of taking responsibility is when Jesus feeds the crowd of five thousand in Matthew 14:13-21 (NIV). Because the ministry went into the evening and it was getting late for dinner, Jesus instilled in the Apostles that it was their responsibility to take care of the people. This showed the importance of putting the needs of the people first. Jesus led by example and the Apostles followed. The same, business leaders should follow Jesus’ example.
A business leader follows by making ethical decisions to better serve their customers. They set clear expectations, have effective communication, provide resources to perform jobs effectively and establish a customercentric focus to emphasize the importance of customer satisfaction and quality. The leader must possess personal and business high ethical qualities such as integrity, honesty, loyalty, respect, accountability, kindness, compassion, teamwork, fairness, trustworthiness, caring, and more importantly, responsibility.
In essence, taking responsibility as a business owner should embody the values and behaviors you expect from your team and that your customers expect from you and your business. All your business’ organizational structure, policies, and engagements should exemplify Jesus’ example of being trustworthy, responsible, and accountable. Jesus should be the guiding principle that drives the success and growth of your business. Y? Why Not!

It means unable to be changed or altered in any way. It’s a word you don’t hear much today, probably because it doesn’t describe much in today’s world. That’s why it’s shocking to realize that God doesn’t change. The Bible says, “He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind” (1 Samuel 15:29). An integral but often overlooked attribute of God is that He is immutable. He is now exactly who He was when He created the world and exactly who He will be when Jesus returns.
It’s not just shocking that God doesn’t change—it’s comforting. It means that all God’s promises to His children will always be true. God never wakes up on the wrong side of the bed. God never tells us “I can’t deal with this right now.” He will never cease to be our perfect, just, loving heavenly Father.
Immutability means that Jesus will always be enough for you. The price of salvation will never go up—Jesus’ death on the cross was the perfect payment for our sins. His love for you will never falter. When your child graduates, He is there to rejoice with you. When your loved one is diagnosed with cancer, He is there to comfort you. When you lose your job, He will meet your needs. Always.
What a joy and comfort it is to hear these words from our Father: “I the Lord do not change” (Malachi 3:6).

NOTICE OF PAID MAILING OPTION
In July 2022, the cost of both printing and mailing greatly increased. Instead of passing this cost along to our long-time dedicated advertisers, we made the tough choice to eliminate our free mailing sevices to keep The Shopper alive. As of July 2022 we no longer be mailing to homes. If you would like to continue to receive a paper in the mail the cost will be $20 a month. Our new distribution plan has increased the availability of the newspaper as well as expanded the area we serve with added locations below. Thanks for sticking with us , we love our readers and communities! Thank you -
MORE GUESTS AT THE FUNERAL LUNCHEON OF AT STEVES IN HEGEWISCH
It’s always a great day at Steve’s for family and friends together around for a funeral luncheon, in this case for Mr. Bielec, Trish Bielec’s Dad. Family and friends gathered to remember him . ***
THREE OBITUARIES, THREE BELOVED
ONE’S GONE TO SOON: They are Christine Line, Donald Bielec and Joseph Fuhrmann. Each of these individuals left family and friends behind to join loved ones in Heaven. At least that is the way this Catholic believes. Each of these beloved departed left behind those who mourn, those who remember and those who weep bitter tears for their losses.
In the case of DONALD BIELEC he left a family to mourn him though he lived a full life. He was a veteran and a Dad and Elmwood Chapel on 112th Street was filled with those who wish to remember him. His photos lined the walls of Elmwood and his life story and the floral tributes attest to his beloved status. May Donald Bielec Rest in Peace.
JOSEPH FURHMANN, a father, grandfather and great grandfather died way to soon at 82, leaving a grieving family to consider his loss. Joseph too is a military veteran and will be given his honors at the cemetery.
CYNTHIA LINE will be buried Tuesday.. A young woman whose life was cut short. Her parents and loved ones are dealing with the grief of losing her. How she loved her sports teams and the family dressed in shirts to express their favor of same. As we grow older, the loss of loved ones takes a different slant—those who have lived a long and storied life are celebrated. Those who are in the sunshine of their lives are mourned as gone to soon. And we who remain, who remember, who pray for our mutual losses, humbly pray that Donald, Joseph and Cynthia rest in God’s Peace. ***
Back to school means back to Girls Scouts. The k-5 multi level troop a Johnston Elementary worked on a group STEM building project for their first meeting of the 2023-24 school year. The Girls learned about team work, job assignments and the science of building while creating memories and friendships. ***
BIRDS ARE PASSING BACK THROUGH for fall migration. Many birds are passing through our area, one of the hot-spots in the US for birders, from their nesting locations up north back south for the winter. Pictured here is a Black-throated Blue Warbler ***
PARTY ON THE PLAYGROUND took place this past Friday at Southridge Elementary in Highland. The staff combines lunch and recess and invites families to join for a picnic, music, and some fun on the playground. Logan, a 4th grader, can be seen here enjoying Kona Ice snowcone from the food truck. ***

“Millennials VS Boomers”
MIKE BUDER
As I approach my 65th birthday and my 43rd year in real estate, I find myself amazed by the symbiotic chemistry of Boomers (like myself) and Millennials working together in the real estate industry. The generation that didn’t trust anyone over 30 is now over 50 (aka Boomers), many of us are over 60 and closing in on 70. We are confronted in the marketplace with those now under 30, the Millennials. So the Beatles sing “Paperback Writer”, a Millennial looks at me and asks, “What’s a paperback?”…Baby Boomers were born after World War II, between 1946 and 1964. The next generation is called Generation X range from 1965 to 1984. Millennials, sometimes called Generation Y, have various dates attached to them. The parameters vary from 1980 to 1984 and from 1995 to 2004. Some critics believe that what each generation thinks of the other is neither politically correct nor even polite. You simply can’t believe everything you have read about these “opinions” for each group. The media often displays a lot of smoke and no fire. When they write what Millennials think of Boomers you will read Boomers are eating up social security assets and they are working longer, refusing to get out of the way of enterprising Millennials as they try to move up the corporate ladder. Then you read what Boomers think of Millennials. They are self-absorbed, as they post their entire lives online while parents say, “It’s dinnertime, could you please put your phone down and pass the butter?” In real estate, I have observed some competing strengths and weaknesses. Millennials have an almost innate ability with online technology, excelling at online marketing and software
development, and many Boomers are intimidated by that. On the other hand, Boomers have in-depth experience working with multiple trends in entrepreneurship and marketing, they recognize patterns that escape the Millennials. Working in real estate, I see we have more similarities than differences. We are just different people and that is not determined solely by generation. Our priorities are different, but basically both groups have similar worries, goals and habits. Many millennials have chosen the entrepreneurial life and the idea of working remotely while traveling the world is their vision. Us Boomers with experience in the marketplace have faced many of these problems and learned from the experience.
If we Boomers work hand-in-hand with new Millennial entrepreneurs, we can help steer them away from potential mistakes. This is a secular statement inspired by a Christian principle found in Proverbs 22:6 “Direct your children onto the right path and when they are older, they will not leave it.” There is a lot of hyperbole and spun rhetoric when agenda driven media talks about the conflict between the age groups. In real estate, my experience is, both will work together if given a chance. Baby Boomers have the steak and Millennials have the sizzle.
If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 10 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com or Facebook Friend request Mike Buder: your comments are always welcome.

Speaking Of Seniors
Goof-ups
