Make a Difference Day began in 1992 thanks to the American weekend newspaper magazine “USA Weekend.” The purpose of the day is to make a positive impact on somebody’s life. The 41st United States President, George H.W. Bush, sponsored Make a Difference Day through his non-profit organization “Points Of Light,” which brought more awareness and popularity to the day. For more than 20 years, USA Weekend and Points of Light sponsored National Make a Difference Day. It became the largest national day of community service. It has offered instrumental humanitarian aid to the country. Make a Difference Day is observed annually on the fourth Saturday of October. DR Patikas publisher of NWI Community Connection Magazine have sponsored an inspiring event in Northwest Indiana for the past eleven years. Y? WHY NOT!

DON’T BE LIKE LOT’S WIFE

by Janice R Newman Not looking back to the past is hard to do. We look either with regret or nostalgia and get stuck in a past that can’t be changed. Some people choose to dwell in the past instead of expectantly seeking the future. Don’t be like Lot’s wife in Genesis 19 by looking back, ruminating, or not letting go of the past and forgetting the hope of the future. She could not see the promise of a new beginning or life without letting go of the past. When you look back into the past you risk getting stuck yearning for the past life you had, dwelling over lost opportunities, getting angry over incidents all over again, or contemplating how to change the past, which you can’t do. The woulda, coulda, and shoulda do not play a role in the future. The past creates an emotional attachment that often is unhealthy depending on how you view it. Dwelling on the past can hinder the future since you cannot change what has already been done. Sometimes it’s hard to not look back. However, when you do, it must be a healthy process. You can look back in two ways either negatively by ruminating with regrets and dwelling on the past or positively by reflecting for understanding and personal improvement. Lot and his family in Genesis 19 were warned by the two angels of God’s coming wrath to destroy the town of Sodom. They were instructed in Genesis 19:17 (NCV) to … “Run for your lives! Don’t look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Run to the mountains, or you will be destroyed”. Lot’s wife could not let go of her past life despite all the negative aspects of Sodom. Despite knowing and being instructed not to look back, she looked back with regret for one more glance at what she was giving up and turned into a pillar of salt. She died and her future died

because she could not let go. The past seems safer than the future as it’s a place we know for certain. The future lies with uncertainty which creates fear, anxiety, and hesitation. So, the past is more appealing even if it’s filled with negativity. When looking back reflectively on your life, choose to seek understanding that will have a positive impact on your future. We are to learn from our past mistakes but not to relive them constantly, that’s when regret, shame, and pain occur. Understanding should be a positive activity that will create personal growth and self-awareness to identify areas of your life that need improvement such as behavior, strengths, weaknesses, and overall personal development. Another positive reason to look back is nostalgia for giving testimony on how you overcame past incidents such as abuse, financial loss, or substance addiction. God wants us to look at what He is doing now in our lives for our futures. By building our faith without fear, it helps us not to get stuck in the past. Fear prevents us from moving forward. Here are some ways to move forward: • Meditate on God’s Word to help you build courage towards what God has for you. • Use the past as a testimony to help others, and yourself, while glorifying God for bringing you out of those situations. • Reflect on the past for understanding and personal growth. The past is the past. So, choose wisely when looking back, if you look at all, to be reflective for understanding and not dwell in the past. For the future will pass you by while you’re lingering in the past. Just keep moving forward with faith. Y? Why Not!

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Can anyone take any of the fixtures down or remove anything from the house? We bought a house and when we started moving in we realized someone had taken the mirrors out of the bathrooms, taken the surround-sound out, and removed the keyless entry to the garage. It was either the seller or the Broker. Answer: A “fixture” is generally seen as something attached to and a part of the property. Thus, a built-in microwave is a “fixture” while a microwave sitting on a counter is not. Was the bathroom mirror attached to the wall? Or, was it merely hung like a picture? If it was just hung, then it is not a fixture and can be removed. When you buy a home it’s smart to make a photo record of the property during the home inspection or when you see the property. This way you can document what was there at the

time of making an offer. You don’t know that the broker removed any items. What you do know is the sellers have an obligation to deliver the property in essentially the same condition as when you saw it at the time you made your offer. If the broker did remove the items, that’s something for the sellers and the broker to resolve, it’s not your problem. The sellers or Broker need to either return any missing fixtures or provide compensation satisfactory to you. Speak to your attorney about this matter. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD When the people of Israel ran out of water in the wilderness, God gave them water. How he did it, however, is fascinating. He could have simply caused a fresh spring to bubble up from the desert floor. Instead, “the LORD said to Moses, ‘Take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink’” (Exodus 17:5b-6, ESV). God ordered Moses to whack a rock with his staff so that water would gush out of it. To understand what happened, we need to know the backstory. The people were thirsty. By now, they had experienced God’s miraculous care and provision so often, they should have trusted him. Instead, they blamed Moses. They charged him with attempted murder. “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” (Exodus 17:3, ESV). They even threatened to kill him. They were also blaming God. God was on trial. And God submitted to it. He stood on the rock and told Moses to strike him with the same staff he used to strike Egypt with plagues. “Strike” is a judgment word. God says, “Let me take the hit, Moses, so that you won’t die. Let me take the hit in place of my rebellious people so that they won’t die but will drink instead.” That’s what Jesus did for us. He submitted to false charges and the death penalty. He was struck down in our place so that whoever comes to him can drink deeply of him, the Living Water, and not thirst. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

“Put the Right Hat On!”

MIKE BUDER

In today’s real estate industry, mortgage rules, appraisal trends, title issues and the way business gets done in general “changes daily”. Whether you are a buyer, a seller or a real estate agent you need to expect problems. Are you and your agent problem solvers or solution seekers? Seriously, what do you focus on? Do you focus on the problem or do you focus on the solution? There is a big difference between these seemingly similar approaches. Here’s my take…let’s say the home inspection didn’t come out quite the way the seller or buyer wanted it to. Some agents get their shorts in a bunch and “blame” the clueless inspector as if he or she is the problem while other agents get busy finding solutions to what needs to be fixed along with the buyer and seller. Which agent is bringing “resolution” to the transaction? Which agent comes across more professional, trustworthy and with the ability to get the job done? Seems pretty simple to me. I mean think about it – if what we focus on, expands our time invested towards the end result – then why in the world would you focus on the problem? Why not look for solutions? I know this may seem “simple” but I don’t think it’s as simple as we all believe. In fact it’s quite profound! It’s a lot more energizing to look for solutions. And it certainly is more creative and satisfying as well. Think about this if you’ve got a “hitch-in-the-git-along” in your real estate transaction. Approach the situation with your solution-seeker hat on rather than your problem solver hat. Visualize the solution hat on your head (ok-I know this is sounding a little airy fairy but it works). Take the time to notice how much smoother the situation seems to get handled and how quickly solutions come to mind. Notice how the other parties in the transaction respond to you. And - notice how you feel! Seriously – if you practice solutionseeking enough it can change your life for the good – not to mention help to get your real estate transaction closed. When should you sell investments? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you’re a long-term investor, your portfolio may stay fairly stable over time. However, that doesn’t mean you will never sell any investments. But when should you sell — and why? Here are some scenarios to consider: • If an investment has consistently underperformed – For one reason or another, some investments may not live up to your expectations. Rather than holding these investments in the hope that they will eventually show consistently positive returns, you might be better off selling them and using the proceeds to buy other investments that could help you make progress toward your goals. Keep in mind, though, that short-term price swings are inevitable for virtually all investments, so you may not want to sell an investment after just a few price drops, as it may still have strong fundamentals and good prospects. • If the investment itself has changed – The nature of some investments, such as stocks, can change over time. Stocks represent companies, and companies can evolve and adapt — or not. So, you may own shares in a company whose management has changed or whose products are less competitive than they once were. If this company no longer seems like a sound investment, you may consider selling your shares and moving on. • If an investment is “redundant” – Over time, you may have added investments that are similar to others you already own. If you do have too many investments that are alike, you risk not having a fully diversified portfolio, and while diversification can’t always protect against all losses or guarantee profits, it can help reduce the impact of market volatility on your holdings. Consequently, you might want to sell an investment that may now be “redundant” to your portfolio and replace it with another one that could boost your diversification efforts. • If an investment takes up too much space in your portfolio – If you bought an investment years ago, and it’s grown substantially in value, it could eventually take up more space in your portfolio than you had intended, which could expose you to more risk than you’d like — because too much of any single investment may leave you more vulnerable to market downturns. Of course, if the investment is still appropriate for your needs, and still has a good outlook, you may not want to totally liquidate it, but you could consider scaling back on the shares you own. • If your own needs have changed – You originally created your investment mix to help you reach certain goals, such as a comfortable retirement. And during much of your working life, you could possibly afford to invest primarily for growth, accepting the risk that comes along with that approach, as you knew you’d have time to potentially overcome the short-term volatility that’s part of investing. But as you near retirement, you may want to lower your risk level. Consequently, you could decide to sell some of your growth-oriented investments and move the money into income-producing ones. However, even during retirement, you’ll still need your portfolio to provide some growth opportunities to help you ahead of inflation. Generally speaking, you may not want to do a lot of selling (or buying) of investments once you’ve built a portfolio that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. But if you are going to sell investments, make sure you do so for the right reasons. S H I NG L E OA K T R E E C OU RT E SY OF CHICAGO: The late Mayor Richard J. Daley used to wax poetic about the number of trees he had planted in our fair city over the years. Apparently, his successor is continuing the trend because my husband Larry and i received a beautiful ‘Shingle Oak’ sapling on our Hegewisch driveway just this past week. Parkways in Chicago used to blaze with trees of every kind until the Dutch elm disease hit in the mid-50’s and 60’s, when many were taken down. Now, we are building a resistance with newer varieties like European buckthorn, green ash, box elder, black cherry and the American Elm revisited in a more resistant strain. Truly Chicago’s trees are a lasting legacy for generations to come. ***

Speaking Of Seniors

Chicago Medical Firm Goofed WOODROW WILCOX On October 4, 2023, an 89-year-old client brought to me a “final notice” bill from a medical firm in Chicago. The client is from Schererville, Indiana. “This is the final notice on your account. We require payment in 10 days or we may refer your account to a collection agency,” the bill stated. I made a copy of the bill and gave the original back to the client. He followed me to my office where we phoned the biller together. He gave me permission to speak for him and I started questioning the biller’s representative. After my third question, the representative stopped me. She apologized for the wait while she checked something. When she returned to our phone conversation, she told us not to pay attention to the bill. She admitted that the medical firm from Chicago had filed the claim with Medicare without some important information. That is what caused the balance owed bill to our client. She promised that the claim would be refiled with Medicare with the needed information. Thank God she was honest. But I had to intervene to help a senior citizen from Indiana because a medical firm in Chicago

using a medical billing firm in another state did sloppy work filing a claim with Medicare. If I had not helped the senior from Indiana, he would have been hounded and pursued to pay a bill that he really did not owe. This is the kind of billing harm that the Medicare system does to seniors thousands of times every day. For years, I have worked to spotlight the problems of Medicare that hurt seniors on Medicare. So far, I have not found one politician – Democrat or Republican – who is willing to listen to me and act to fix things. The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps clients with Medicare related medical bill problems at no charge to demonstrate that we really care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give such high-level customer service, why not switch to us? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by correcting Medicare related bills. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered at book stores or online.
