SSC Fall Concert Series to Feature Winners of Young Musicians’ Competition SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–Winners from the 6th Annual Young Musicians’ Competition will grace the stage alongside their adult counterparts in this year’s Fall Concert Series at South Suburban College (SSC). The competition, held in April and open to District 510 and Northwest Indiana students aged eight to 18, witnessed the participation of 22 talented students. Among the standout winners was Eric Nickerson, a junior from Homewood-Flossmoor High School, who clinched the top spot in the Senior Artist Division for ages 15–18. Eric Nickerson, reflecting on his journey to success, attributed his discovery of this opportunity to his SSC teacher and conductor. “My private teacher, Ingrid Krizan, is a conductor here,” said Nickerson. “She told me about the opportunity and started preparing me for it.” Originally drawn to the violin and viola, Nickerson’s passion shifted after watching the renowned 2CELLOS on YouTube. “I follow a lot of the famous soloists in the world now, “Nickerson added. “Probably the biggest would be Sheku (Kanneh-Mason). I remember seeing a video of him playing the Elgar at the BBC Proms, and that was a pivotal moment in my life when I decided that this is something I want to pursue.” His aspirations now revolve around becoming an orchestral cellist. Nickerson is set to join his fellow champions in SSC’s Fall Concert Series, an annual event presented by the SSC Music Department and open to the public throughout October. The series boasts a diverse range of musical performances to cater to various musical tastes. This year’s series kicks off with the SSC String Orchestra on Monday, October 16, at 7 p.m., featuring violin, cello, and bass arrangements. Under the direction of Ingrid Krizan, the concert will showcase pieces such as “Take Five” by Paul Desmond, “Masquerade Waltz” by Khatchechurian, and “Fireworks Music” by Handel. Violinist David Howard will also lead the Chamber String Ensemble through the First Movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1. Following that, the SSC Jazz Combo and Jazz Orchestra will take the spotlight on Wednesday, October 18, at 7 p.m. Director Jeff Brath will guide the audience through pieces like “Skylark” by Hoagy Carmichael & Johnny Mercer, and “Black and Tan Fantasy” by Duke Ellington. Subsequently, an all-inclusive instrumental performance awaits as the SSC Symphonic Band takes center stage on Friday, October 20, at 7 p.m. under the baton of Wesley Woodard. The evening will feature a repertoire including “Gumsucker’s March” by Percy Grainger, “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and “Lola

by Janice R Newman Imagine yourself cautiously navigating on a winding road, eager to get to your destination. On your journey, the road takes an unexpected dip, and your view is obscured by a large deer with antlers standing in the dip blocking your way. The deer in the dip, though seemingly minor, can turn into a formidable barrier. In our lives, we often encounter similar blockages that prevent us from achieving our mission or goals. Whether these obstacles are people, things, or circumstances, it’s easy for even the smallest distraction or blockage to appear as insurmountable mountains in our paths. Sometimes obstacles get in our way and prevent us from reaching our goals or completing the task at hand. To stay true to our purpose and goals, we must find ways to remove the blockages and maintain our course. Blockages and distractions are impediments on our paths to accomplishing our purpose. We must remain focused and clear on our mission or goals without getting stuck with distractions which will leave us standing frozen like a deer in headlights. It halts our progress and creates discouragement. The Bible instructs us in Proverbs 4:25-26 (ESV) “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.” If your focus is forward, looking ahead, you are less likely to stumble or stop when blockages obstruct your path. Here are key tips to help you stay on the path and clear the blockages: • Clarity of Purpose: Set clear concise goals and prioritize them with a detailed plan with steps to power you to overcome the obstacles by identifying, reducing, eliminating their influence, and navigating around them. Your plans become a guiding light to assist you in determining which obstacles are merely detours and which must be overcome. • Learn to be Adaptable: In the grand scheme of life, things change offend, even

My Victim Letter WOODROW WILCOX I am a victim of some faults in the Medicare system. People who support big government want us to believe that the Medicare system is without faults. How wrong they are. For over 20 years, I have helped senior citizens who were harmed by faults in the Medicare system. Some people who work for Medicare don’t work very hard or very professionally to avoid harm to seniors. In my case, Medicare did not update my file at least six months. The doctors and other medical services that helped me during that time did not have their claims processed properly. Thus, I got bills that I should not have received. I have helped others with this same issue many times. So, I knew what to do. After I got Medicare to correct its records with an update, I wrote to the medical service providers. With some editing to protect privacy, here is the letter that I sent to doctors and a hospital. On September 12, 2023, I learned that Medicare had not updated my file. I tried a Medicare Advantage plan from January 1 to February 28, 2023. I switched back to Medicare plus a Medicare supplement plan starting March 1, 2023.
My supplement insurance company notified Medicare about the switch on March 10, and Medicare sent a confirmation of receipt of the notification on March 15. BUT MEDICARE NEVER ACTUALLY UPDATED MY FILE. If you filed a claim for services rendered to me between March 1 and October 1, 2023, it was not processed correctly. PLEASE, REFILE THE CLAIM. I contacted Medicare to correct the file. Then, I contacted Medicare to make sure that the file has been corrected. I did not cause this problem. You did not cause this problem. The lazy, sloppy, unprofessional people at Medicare caused this problem. Please, cooperate with me to fix this by refiling your claim. Thank you. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Two weeks ago I made an offer on a bank-owned house. The bank was impressed with the offer, however, the listing agent said there was another offer so I upped my offer $8,000. Four days later they told me they accepted the other offer which was $15,000 lower than mine because it was a cash offer. My loan was already approved, so there was no financing contingency and I would have closed within two weeks. The house is still in contingency with the cash offer and I was wondering if I had any recourse about these terms. Should I wait in the background to see if the deal falls through because I really wanted this piece of property. Answer: A seller is not obligated to accept the highest price because there are a variety of issues in a real estate sale agreement. That said, I would not have turned down an extra $15,000 -- but I’m not a bank. You could make a back-up offer. If accepted and the first offer fails, then you might be able acquire the property. However, if you make a back-up offer you might want to offer less than your original bid given the

in the blink of an eye, therefore we must be adaptable and prepared to change when unforeseen circumstances or setbacks block our paths. Our unpredictable life and need to be adaptable is noted in Proverbs 19:21(NIV) “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails”. The ability to adjust or change is not a sign of weakness but there is a purpose in every twist, turn, or blockage. Find alternative plans or routes to reach your goals. We must adapt, persevere, and trust in the ultimate purpose that prevails. • Seek Support and Accountability: Share your goals with close trusted people who can provide support, offer accountability, or encouragement and guidance to navigate around life’s dips in the road. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV) reminds us that “Two are better than one...” Another person can offer a helping hand by providing a support system, accessing your progress, and motivating you to maintain a sense of responsibility towards your goals. One night, I encountered an actual deer, along a desolate country road, standing on a narrow bridge in the dip of the road. Earlier, I had attended a church service, where in prayer I reflected on the obstacles in my life that blocked me from moving forward. It was as if God was sending me a visual message through the deer which embodied the very blockages and challenges, I was wrestling with. As I cautiously navigated the dark and uncertain twists and turns of the road, it became evident that God was urging me to proceed with care. I came across the deer and paused to gaze at it until it moved aside to grant me passage to continue my journey towards my goals and aspirations. You must face your obstacles to move forward or be halted by a deer in the dip. Y? Why Not! www.ywhynot_Facebook
information supplied by the agent. Speak with a Realtor, if you do not already have one. Question: Is it better to accept a cash-only buyer or one who has lender financing? Or does it make any difference to me? Answer: Assuming the two offers are for the same price, you want the all-cash model. Why? You don’t have to worry about lenders approving the buyer and no one will ask you to help defray the seller’s loan costs by paying points or closing costs. That said, you should expect an all cash buyer to require exactly the same verifications as you would find with a financed transaction -- title examination, survey, termite check, Home inspection, etc. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. BBB Tip: Fall Home Maintenance - Get Ready For Winter The air is getting more relaxed, and the leaves and cornfields are turning yellow. Fall is here. With the change in weather comes a list of home maintenance that all homeowners should tackle before the icy stuff sets in. BBB offers these tips when preparing your home for the colder weather: Clean those gutters. A build-up of leaves and other debris can cause your gutters and downspouts not to drain correctly. Improper draining can make water spill over your gutters, leading to foundation/basement damage and damage to your fascia boards. In the winter, ice dams can form that can let snow melt underneath your shingles. Inspect your roof. Inspect your roof for loose or damaged shingles and make any necessary repairs. Damaged or loose shingles can let in water and ice during the winter, creating interior damage. Test your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors. Making sure these essential safety tools are in proper working condition is manageable and vital to ensuring the safety of those in your home. The National Fire Protection Association offers excellent information on installing and maintaining smoke alarms. Check your window and doors for air leakage. Adding caulk and weather stripping helps prevent cold air leakage into your home and prevents spiders and insects from entering. Also, check where pipes and wires enter your home. Organize your garage. You will undoubtedly use your garage a lot more in the colder months. Get rid of trash and clutter, and make sure your snow shovel and other winter-use items are easily accessible. Fill/repair any cracks or holes you see to prevent bugs and rodents from entering that will be seeking refuge from the cold. Inspect your driveway. The frequent freezing and thawing conditions in many areas, along with tree roots and ground shifting, can cause driveways to develop areas of needed repair. Fall is a great time to fill cracks and seal coats to prevent wintertime water/ice damage. Schedule HVAC maintenance. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, preventive care can help save you up to 25% in energy costs. Having your heating system serviced and filters replaced will ensure your system works efficiently. Tend to the outside water supply. Cover up your outdoor water fixture (s). Spigot covers are reasonably priced at your local hardware store and help keep the exterior pipes from freezing. Empty hoses of any water and move them indoors. Protect pipes. Insulate pipes in unheated areas, like attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Running a slow drip of water from faucets during extremely cold weather can also help prevent pipes from freezing. Prepare the garden and yard. Trim trees and bushes away from your home to prevent heavy snow or ice damage. Clean up leaves and debris to prevent pests from finding shelter. Store patio furniture and other outdoor items. Put away or cover outdoor furniture, grills, and other summer items to protect them from winter weather. Stock up on winter supplies. Have salt or ice melt, shovels, and other winter supplies on hand for snow and ice removal. Sweep your chimney. If you have a fireplace, clean and inspect the chimney before using it. Ensure the damper works properly to prevent drafts when the fireplace is not in use. Having the soot and possible blockages or creosote build-up helps reduce the risk of a chimney fire and can improve the efficiency of your fireplace. Reverse ceiling fans. In the colder months, you want your fan to move the warm air down, which means having your blades turn clockwise. Test backup generators. If you have a backup generator, test it to ensure it’s in working condition in case of power outages. Review your emergency plan. Review your family’s emergency plan, including how to stay warm, communication, and evacuation procedures in an emergency. Check for BBB Accreditation for any professionals you may hire. Go to BBB.org to check the trustworthiness of a business. Do a general online search on a company to see what reviews and other information may be available. For more information and to learn how to protect yourself, Google “BBB 10 Steps to Avoid Scams”. If you spot a scam, whether you have lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud. ftc.gov. Your story can help protect consumers from similar scams.

Start moving toward retirement security SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN It’s not as well-known as Halloween, but National Retirement Security week happens every October – the third week, to be precise — and while it doesn’t involve ghosts and goblins, it does deal with something even more frightening: the risk of not being able to enjoy a comfortable retirement. Through various events, this occasion highlights ideas about building retirement security. What steps can you take? Here are some suggestions: • Don’t underestimate your longevity. Consider this: 65-year-old men can expect to live another 20 years, while 65-year-old women can anticipate almost 22 more years, according to the Society of Actuaries. And these figures are just averages, meaning you could well exceed these ages, perhaps by many years. So, in thinking about how much money you’ll need as a retiree, be aware that you could spend two, or even three, decades in retirement. • Don’t underestimate health care costs. When you retire, some of your expenses — such as transportation, wardrobe and other costs associated with your career — will drop. Others will not and may even increase. Health care is a prime example: Many people assume that Medicare or their Medicare Advantage plan will take care of virtually all their health care costs in retirement, but that’s not the case. Generally speaking, you could plan on spending $4,500 to $6,500 per year on health care costs during retirement, excluding the large expenses connected with long-term care. Your actual costs could be higher or lower, depending on your health, prescription drugs and supplemental insurance coverage, but make sure you plan for sizable health care costs in your projected retirement budget. • Contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement plans. Try to put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other
employer-sponsored retirement plan and try to increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You may also be eligible to contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA, which offers tax benefits and a wide variety of investment options. (Contributions to a Roth IRA may be limited based on your income.) Once you reach retirement, you can still make some moves that could help boost your financial security: • Maintain an appropriate investment mix. When you retire, you might be tempted to shift most of your portfolio into highly conservative investments to “lock in” gains and avoid being over-exposed to market volatility that could cause short-term losses. Yet, even in retirement, you should still own some growth-oriented investments that can potentially help keep you ahead of inflation. In fact, it’s important to periodically rebalance your investments back to your preferred mix to avoid taking too much or too little risk, so you may want to consult with a financial advisor. • Identify a suitable withdrawal rate. You don’t want to take out so much from your portfolio each year that you run the risk of outliving your money. So, you’ll want to determine an annual withdrawal rate that can reduce this danger. A common withdrawal rate to start retirement is 4%, but your own rate should be based on several factors: your age, size of portfolio, other sources of income and so on. It can be challenging to make all the moves necessary to help achieve retirement security — but it’s worth the effort. Joystick Java: Over 2.5 million Online Gamers in IL Suffer from Insomnia, Finds Study In today’s digital era, online gaming has emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Going beyond the sheer fun and entertainment of games like Solitaire, it’s a platform that harnesses an array of benefits for its enthusiasts, including cognitive development, and more importantly-combatting loneliness: in a world where social isolation is becoming increasingly prevalent, online gaming offers a unique refuge. However, every rose has its thorn! The engrossing nature of online gaming can sometimes be its Achilles’ heel. Gamers, captivated by the virtual realms, often find themselves lost in gameplay, stretching sessions well into the early hours. This dedication, while commendable, has given rise to concerns about insomnia induced specifically by extended gaming hours. Online-Solitaire.com recently commissioned a study to find out how online gamers are affected by insomnia. They ran a nationwide survey and then combined these results from official data from County Health Rankings to reveal where America’s most sleep deprived gamers reside. The study found that online gamers in Virginia are the most affected by insomnia, where 30% reported this to be the case. On a more localized scale, Online-Solitaire.com was able to identify the most sleep deprived online gamers within each state. For example, the town of Eutaw in Alabama (population 2,800) may not be particularly well known nationwide, but it placed first in the country overall for online gamers with a sleep problem. 968 ‘Eutawnians’ are self-confessed sleep deprived gamers, representing 35% of all gamers living there. Similarly, one would have expected that San Francisco would have come ontop in the state for online gamers with insomnia. Afterall, the city is home to a significant number of tech companies and startups. It is also home to companies like Electronic Arts (EA) and Zynga. However, the top spot for online gaming insomnia belongs to far further south in San Bernardino. Here there are 59,415 gamers who don’t get enough sleep, representing 27.4% of the local population. When it comes to Illinois, the survey found that 20% say they are sleep deprived due to their gaming activities, which equates to 2,571,381 people! Online-Solitaire.com was also able to identify specifically which towns and cities across Illinois are the most impacted - they found the local gamers in Cairo (20%) are the most affected by insomnia.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
Post-Truth Advertising MIKE BUDER October 2023 marks the completion of my 42nd year as a real estate agent in the South Suburbs of Chicago. I have worked with, worked for, managed and mentored many people over the last four decades. Last week I was asked by a young Realtor “What is the most important thing that you can share that has given you longevity in the real estate business?” My answer was short but to the point…”Everyday be sure to maintain and invest in your personal integrity so people will trust you and confidently refer your name to others.” In reality, my response was in the spirit of Matthew 7:12 “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” You see, I’ve got a basic premise: If I can’t trust you, I can’t do business with you. I then gave this young agent two examples that recently happened to me. Example 1: I had a water leak at a property we are renovating that needed a specialized repair because of its less than ideal location to access. We located a plumbing company that per their website offered that specific skill set. Long story short, the plumber who showed up, didn’t know a thing about that type of repair and instead wanted to reroute the entire supply line to the house through the basement. When I mentioned the advertised repair method, he didn’t know anything about it. When I called his boss, I got “We don’t offer that service any longer.” When I asked why it was so prominent on their website, I essentially got a verbal shrug
of the shoulders. Any chance they had of earning my business was over. Fortunately, I had other choices for that specialty repair and had it taken care of. The second example I had for this young agent came to me in the form of a text asking me if I was an agent in the South Holland area. I replied “Yes! That is one of our primary service areas.” You can guess what came next. Another, “We’ve got a special system for getting you 15-20 appointments a month, can we set up an appointment to discuss?” Again, a company led with something that wasn’t true. They had to know I was a South Holland agent before they contacted me. If they had my number, they had my profile, they had my location. Again, any trust that could have been created was broken before we even got started. As real estate agents, we’re in a business that is not trusted on the whole, so it’s critical to maintain a good reputation and establish trust early with potential clients. I wrapped up my response to this young Realtor by saying, “At first contact the trust is either cemented or smashed. If we exhibit the knowledge we published, we’re good to go. If we can’t walk the talk of our posts, it’s game over. No gimmicks needed, its pure fundamentals. Give the consumer what they seek and back it up with performance when they contact you and you can have longevity in any business.” Mike Buder A local Christian Businessman RE/MAX 10 (708) 418-4444
