This recognition follows a review process and on-site visit, leading to the ACEN Board of Commissioners’ approval during their September meeting. Dr. Linda Brown-Aldridge, the Dean of the Nursing Program, shared her thoughts on the accreditation, “This accreditation stands as proof of the unwavering commitment and hard work demonstrated by our SSC faculty, the institution’s executive leadership, and our dedicated students.” Dr. Stokes, President of SSC, emphasized the significance of ACEN accreditation, saying, “Attaining ACEN accreditation is a pivotal milestone for our nursing program. It underscores the dedication of our team and their unwavering commitment to improving the student experience.” The accreditation process included an assessment and planning effort aimed at improving the nursing curriculum and education experience. Dr. Brown-Aldridge and her team have submitted data to ACEN, covering nursing curriculum, cohort information, and other pertinent data, reaffirming SSC’s dedication to improvement. Dr. Tasha Williams, SSC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, voiced her vision for the future, “This accreditation solidifies our position as a provider of nursing education in the Southland. We remain committed to equipping students with the skills they need to make a positive impact on patient care and the community.” ACEN accreditation is a voluntary process that uses peer review to assess nursing academic programs. SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you’ve invested in an IRA for many decades, it may well turn into a key source of income for your retirement. Still, you might not deplete your IRA in your lifetime, especially if you also have a pension or a 401(k) and other investment income. So, if your IRA still has sizable assets after your passing, it would likely end up in your estate plan. If you leave your IRA to grown children or other family members, could they be hit with a big tax bill? Here’s a little background: Up until the Secure Act of 2019, those who inherited traditional IRAs could extend their required withdrawals over their lifetimes, which stretched out the annual taxes due on these withdrawals. But the Secure Act changed the provisions for non-spouse beneficiaries who inherited an IRA after 2019, meaning that beneficiaries of inherited IRAs had only 10 years (beginning the year after death) to withdraw the entire balance. For some beneficiaries, this could potentially create a tax burden. (Inheritors of Roth IRAs are also required to follow the 10-year distribution rule but are not subject to income taxes on account earnings if the Roth IRA’s five-year holding period has been met). However, not all beneficiaries were affected by the new rules. Spouses can stretch their inherited IRA distributions over their lifetimes and exceptions exist for certain non-spouse beneficiaries. Minor children of the IRA owner (until the age of majority), chronically ill or disabled individuals, and beneficiaries who are no more than 10 years younger than the IRA owner may opt to stretch their distributions. The new 10-year requirement applies to IRAs inherited on or after Jan. 1, 2020. But due to confusion over changes to required minimum distribution (RMD) rules for some beneficiaries of inherited IRAs, the IRS waived penalties for individuals who failed to take RMDs in 2021

MIKE BUDER I recently had a conversation with an old acquaintance who is trying to sell her home in another state. I was shocked when she told me that her agent had cancelled the listing agreement via email and he wouldn’t take her calls. When I delved a little further, I was no longer shocked; I found myself mentally applauding the other agent. My friend said, “I am under so much stress and that little # %(^)! didn’t seem to understand that having the house shown was just too much for me. I told him &#(!)# and @#*%)) and he hung the phone up on me! Then he sent me an email canceling the listing! Can you believe it? What kind of a #*&^(!)) would cancel a listing over a conversation? It wasn’t personal. He should have understood how stressed I am and dealt with it. Dealing with me is part of his job.” Buying or selling a home is one of the most stressful life events we deal with. Emotions run high and it’s not always easy to keep our cool. I have been in this business for 42 years, as a result I tend to be a little more understanding and knowledgeable
when working with buyers or sellers that are having a tough time. Every once in a while, a client decides that taking their frustration out on me is acceptable. I’m not talking about getting frustrated or upset over something within my control (hey, if you feel I’m not doing my job you have every right to respectfully say something) ---I’m talking about when a buyer or seller is so stressed about moving, so overwhelmed with all there is to do they just take it all out on me or my staff. There isn’t much I won’t put up with. Being a Realtor means empathizing with my clients and respecting their feelings. But I don’t tolerate abuse, nor should any real estate professional. Plain and simple - - I will do everything in my power to help you deal with the stress that buying or selling a home brings in today’s market but… “I am your Realtor, not your punching bag”. and 2022 and extended the RMD penalty waiver for 2023. Although these rulings give beneficiaries — those not eligible for the exemptions listed above — more time to plan, they will eventually need to start taking RMDs, which could affect their tax situations. To help protect your heirs, consider these suggestions: • Using permanent life insurance. A properly structured permanent life insurance policy could help you replace the assets your family might lose to the taxes resulting from an inherited IRA. You might even consider naming a charity as the beneficiary of an IRA, rather than your family members. The charity would receive the IRA proceeds tax free, and the life insurance could then provide tax-free benefits to your heirs. • Leaving taxable investment accounts to your heirs. Apart from your taxdeferred IRA, you may own other, fully taxable accounts containing investments such as stocks or bonds. Typically, these investments receive what’s known as a “step-up” in their cost basis once they are inherited. This means your heirs will essentially inherit all the gains your investments earned by the time of your passing — but they won’t be taxed on these gains if they sell the assets immediately. This type of sale could help offset the taxes your heirs will incur from the inherited IRA. The tax and investment issues surrounding inherited IRAs can be complex, so consult with your tax and financial advisors before making any moves. And, as with many areas relating to inheritances, the sooner you start planning, the better. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD One of the most fascinating battle accounts in the Bible is in Exodus 17:8-16. The LORD, through Moses, is leading the people of Israel through the wilderness. The people of Amalek attack them. Moses orders Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow, I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand” (Exodus 17:9, ESV). Israel’s warriors, led by Joshua, confront Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses ascends the hill with Aaron and Hur. There, Moses raises his staff high in the air. The staff represents God’s power and authority through him. Through that staff, the LORD liberated his people from Egypt. When Moses holds the staff high, Israel has the upper hand in battle. But when Moses lowers the staff, Amalek has the upper hand. But Moses’ hands get tired. Aaron and Hur have him sit on a rock, then hold up his arms so that his staff will stay upraised. Thus, Israel wins the battle. What happened up above, not what happened down below, determined the outcome of the battle. The raised staff of Moses was the posture of prayer, reaching up to God for his power to overcome. So also in the Christian life. We must fight sin and evil inside and outside of us. However, “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12, ESV). That’s why we must pray “at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication” (Ephesians 6:18a, ESV). Remember that Jesus, like Moses, ascended on high. There, like Moses, he prays for God’s people and their victory. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Free Learning Opportunities Available and Volunteers Needed for the SSC Literacy Tutoring Program South Holland, IL– South Suburban College (SSC) is seeking participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults needing basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills, whole language experience, combined with effective communication skills. Residents are welcome to volunteer as tutors and encourage others to take advantage of this free professional development opportunity. Once certified, SSC’s volunteer literacy tutors visit adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring is flexibly scheduled based on the availability of tutors, learners, and tutoring sites. The following locations have been established as tutoring sites: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Public Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Main Campus Library, South Holland; South Suburban College Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Blue Island Public Library; Dixmoor Public Library; Tinley Park Public Library; Markham Public Library; Midlothian Public Library; and Thornton Public Library.

Illiteracy can be debilitating for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who cannot read experience difficulty completing many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. The November training will occur at the South Suburban College Main Campus in South Holland, IL, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from November 2 through November 21, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This 12-hour program culminates with literacy training certification. Tutors will continue to receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. For additional information or to register, please contact David Stephens, Adult Literacy Grants Manager, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email DStephens@ssc.edu.
South Suburban College Nursing Students ________________________________________________________________________ South Holland, IL - South Suburban College (SSC) announces that its Associate in Applied Science nursing program has achieved accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) through Spring 2028. Dr. Tasha Williams, SSC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, voiced her vision for the future, “This accreditation solidifies our position as a
provider of nursing education in the Southland. We remain committed to equipping students with the skills they need to make a positive impact on patient care and the community.” ACEN accreditation is a voluntary process that uses peer review to assess nursing academic programs. It provides specialized accreditation for nursing education programs, offering certificates, diplomas, or recognized professional degrees. In attaining this status, SSC’s nursing program has showcased its skill in five areas: administrative capacity and resources, faculty qualifications, student support, curriculum development, and program outcomes. This recognition reinforces SSC’s commitment to excellence in nursing education. SSC’s full-time Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program provides students with specialized training to cultivate an understanding of nursing theory and practice. Graduates are equipped to deliver healthcare services to the community in various roles. Upon program completion, students are prepared to sit for the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). To learn more about the ACEN accreditation or the nursing program, please contact the SSC Nursing Department at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2260. For additional details about the SSC nursing program, visit https://www.ssc.edu/academics/ programs-of-study/nursing/. SSC is located at 15800 S. State Street, South Holland, IL.

BBB Tip: Celebrate Halloween on a Budget By Rick Walz - President/CEO BBB Serving Northern Indiana Consumers are gearing up to celebrate Halloween. The National Retail Federation expects people will spend $10.6 billion, up from $10.1 billion in 2022. Among Halloween celebrants, 67 percent plan to buy candy, 51 percent plan to purchase decorations, and 47 percent will get costumes. Those numbers can seem daunting for a single day, especially when watching the family budget. However, there are ways to keep the fun stylish and on budget. Better Business Bureau recommends the following tips this Halloween: Look around your home. Check your closet. There are probably hidden surprises to help you throw together a killer costume! Getting creative will not only help save money but will save space, too. Rent a costume. If the idea of spending money on buying a costume isn’t quite appealing because you will only wear it once, consider renting. Renting a costume leaves room in the budget. Research rental companies on BBB. org, check the store policy regarding trying on costumes, inspect the condition of the outfit, and read the rental agreement carefully before signing anything. Buy in bulk. It may seem counter-intuitive, but buying more can save you money! Buying in bulk lessens the cost per item. Budgeting can be especially handy on a night like Halloween, especially considering that there might be more trick-or-treaters this year. Factory-wrapped candy will last a long time, even if you have leftovers. And let’s be honest, leftovers are pretty tasty, even after Halloween. Always check the return policy. Seasonal shops carry unique items for a short period in a temporary location or online. When shopping a seasonal vendor, understand the store’s return policy before making a purchase. Remember: Buying a bunch of stuff with the intent of simply returning it after October 31 is considered fraud. Shop smart online. When shopping from
an online website, the first step is ensuring the URL starts with “HTTPS” and includes a lock symbol. The S in “HTTPS” stands for secure. Look up the website’s privacy policy and contact information. If it is not clearly listed, or they only have an email as the point of contact, take that as a big red flag and shop elsewhere. Also, be sure to use your credit card instead of your debit card, as credit cards not only provide additional protection but it’s also easier to dispute a fraudulent charge. Seasonal stores. If you decide to shop from a seasonal store, ask whether or not they will be open after the holiday, how long they plan to stay open, and if they will accept returns after Halloween is over. If they plan to close up shop on November 1 or refuse returns after, either consider shopping elsewhere or take more time to be sure that item is exactly what you want before making the purchase. More tips for seasonal “pop-up” stores: 1) Ask the owner if there is a website in case you have to contact them later. 2) Save every receipt. 3) Use a credit card to dispute problem charges with the card’s issuer. 4) Make sure you are clear on what items are FINAL SALE. Attending a special event or visiting a haunted house. Before purchasing tickets, research the group offering the experience and make sure that there are no complaints about the company hosting the event. 1) Check out the company at BBB.org. Read what previous customers have to say, and see how the business responds to complaints. 2) Check BBB Scam Tracker and see if other consumers have filed a report about the event host. 3) Search the business online by adding the word “Complaint,” “Reviews” or “Scam” after their name for different search results. For more information and to learn how to protect yourself, Google “BBB 10 Steps to Avoid Scams”. If you spot a scam, whether you have lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your story can help protect consumers from similar scams.

Y? WHY NOT!
CHASE PURPOSE by Janice R Newman We seem to be in constant motion with many of us chasing after one thing: money. We tirelessly pursue money and bigger paychecks, thinking that money will buy us everything including happiness, love, and fulfillment. But money can’t fill the empty void in our lives. Buying more shoes, getting a new car, or having a work title can’t always give our lives meaning and purpose. We must chase after the purpose of God’s will for our lives, our divine purpose. The concept of purpose in Oxford Languages defines it as “a person’s sense of resolve or determination.” Imagine it as a race, a chase for something worth more than worldly riches. Put on your running shoes and start chasing purpose because God placed us on this Earth for a short time with a plan and purpose in mind. We must discover, comprehend, and pursue that purpose with all our heart and mind. Our primary focus should be our purpose, not solely the pursuit of wealth. Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Therefore, our purpose of pursuing money is not always what is God’s plans. By chasing God’s purpose for our lives, versus ours, we come to realized that His ways are greater than our ways. The decision to pursue a purpose should not be dependent on monetary gain; it should be driven by a burning desire within us. Choosing purpose brings true success as its determined by fulfilling what God has called you to do. It’s about achieving something greater than ourselves, a deep sense of meaning and connection to something larger than us. So, how do we discern our purpose? It’s a multi-step process that involves prayer, listening, obedience, and work. Prayer is the initial step, where we communicate with
God, seeking His guidance and wisdom. But it doesn’t end there; we must also listen attentively. Writing down anything we hear can be tremendously helpful. After receiving God’s message, we must find the motivation to follow His instruction diligently working toward the purpose and plan He has set for us. Having faith in your journey to chase purpose is paramount. Stick with it, for God will not lead you astray. Success will follow as you pursue your purpose, building motivation, desire, and determination. The pursuit of purpose will grant you a profound sense of meaning and worth. Jeremiah 29:11 reassures us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God will enable you to overcome every obstacle in your path, allowing you to leap over walls that hinder the fulfillment of your purpose. Do not let fear deter you from following your divine calling. Fulfillment is not always easy or clear. You’ve probably heard people say if you do what you love you’ll feel like you never worked a day in your life and the money will follow. When you’re doing what you love, that could be part of your purpose. Even hobbies, likes or volunteer pursuits could be part of your purpose if it gives you a profound sense of meaning and worth. The pursuit of purpose is a path to true happiness, fulfillment, a sense of worth, and meaningfulness. It is a race worth running, fueled by faith, and guided by the divine will of God. Instead of relentlessly only chasing money, consider putting on your running shoes and chasing purpose, for it is the purpose that truly enriches our lives and fulfills our deepest longings. Y? El Nino adds wrinkle to winter outlook By DANIEL GRANT FarmWeek Now that temperatures in Illinois feel more seasonable for mid-October, at least for the time being, many people probably wonder what lies ahead for winter. And, as always, there’s no shortage of opinions on the subject. Sources such as the Farmers’ Almanac predict a “cold, stormy” winter season ahead. But the arrival of a strong El Nino, such as the one in place, typically tilts the pattern in Illinois toward a warm and mild winter, according to Chris Yates, chief meteorologist with WMBD and WYZZ in Peoria. Yates discussed the weather outlook for the rest of fall and winter during a recent interview with FarmWeek. “We’re heading into a strong El Nino winter,” he said. “An El Nino winter historically has been on the warmer and drier side and we tend to not have a lot of snow in the Midwest. “There have been exceptions, specifically during weak El Nino events,” he said. “But the stronger the El Nino, the warmer, drier and less snowy winters tend to be around here.” That doesn’t mean Illinois will avoid runins with the Polar Vortex or big snow events this winter. But a typical El Nino winter also contradicts the Farmers’ Almanac outlook. “Even if the forecast says it will be a warmer and less snowy winter, it doesn’t mean it won’t get cold,” Yates said. “It will mostly certainly still get cold and it’s still going to snow. There’s no stopping that. “But, at the end of the day, we’ll probably be warmer than average and less snowy than average if history repeats itself.” The typical El Nino pattern also contradicts recent observations from those who track the woolly black caterpillar. Folklore suggests the longer the black bands are on the woolly worm, the longer and more severe it will be for the
upcoming winter. “I’ve heard various things about the woolly worms this year,” Yates told the RFD Radio Network. “From what I’ve heard, there’s been a lot of black ones, which supposedly means a bad winter.” So, what’s the history or track record of seasonal forecasts produced by the Farmers’ Almanac? Yates analyzed the Farmers’ Almanac winter outlooks the past 10 years by comparing the actual precipitation, snowfall and temperature statistics from December through February each year. He reported the findings on his weather blog. And, while it was spot on in consecutive years last decade, the Almanac’s long-range predictions are about as accurate as a coin flip. “They had some good years and hit the nail on the head in 2013-14 and 2014-15,” Yates said of the Almanac winter outlooks. “But the forecasts weren’t as good beyond that.” Yates gave six of the past 10 Farmers’ Almanac winter outlooks below-average to failing grades and scored four as average or better for accuracy. Near-term, much of Illinois could be about done with summer-like temperatures, which would be good for fall anhydrous applications. But Yates can’t rule out a return of unseasonable warmth. Looking ahead, one of Yates’ top concerns remains a lack of moisture. Topsoil moisture in Illinois ranked 57% short to very short, 42% adequate and just 1% surplus as of Oct. 2. “The dry weather has been good for harvest. We’re not dealing with a lot of delays due to rain,” he said. “But I imagine there are some concerns as we’re dealing with severe drought in some parts of the state.” This story was distributed through a cooperative project between Illinois Farm Bureau and the Illinois Press Association. woefully insufficient, but criminal.” “By signing this order, we’re making a positive impact for working Illinoisans across our state that will result in healthier and more financially stable families,” he added. “It will also create a more effective workplace and position the office to become more competitive when attracting and retaining a talented workforce.” Overhauling the office’s antiquated parental leave policy aligns with Giannoulias’ goals of reducing disparities in maternal and infant health-related issues and addressing gender and racial inequity in accessing quality, good-paying jobs. Under the new policy, as well as through recently enacted union agreements, all of the approximately 4,100 Secretary of State employees will receive up to twelve weeks of paid parental leave regardless of whether they are the birthing or non-birthing parent, who under the previous policy were only given two weeks of paid time off.

WOODROW WILCOX The doctors of a medical firm in Porter County got paid twice for the same balance. Their firm was paid by the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company and then the medical firm persuaded our client to pay the same balance. On October 18, 2023, I wrote a polite but firm letter that the medical firm should refund the money that our client paid. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client (and maybe others), here is the letter that I wrote. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm with information that he paid the bill. He asked us to review your bill and other papers. I did. Your firm made a big mistake. You owe our client some money. Here is why. You billed our client $182.24 and got him to pay you on 09/29/23 with check 2446. But his Medicare supplement insurance company paid the same bill to your firm on August 18, 2023 and your firm cashed the payment on 08/25/23. You had the payment

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Two weeks ago I made an offer on a bank-owned house. The bank was impressed with the offer, however, the listing agent said there was another offer so I upped my offer $8,000. Four days later they told me they accepted the other offer which was $15,000 lower than mine because it was a cash offer. My loan was already approved, so there was no financing contingency and I would have closed within two weeks. The house is still in contingency with the cash offer and I was wondering if I had any recourse about these terms. Should I wait in the background to see if the deal falls through because I really wanted this piece of property. Answer: A seller is not obligated to accept the highest price because there are a variety of issues in a real estate sale agreement. That said, I would not have turned down an extra $15,000 -- but I’m not a bank. You could make a back-up offer. If accepted and the first offer fails, then you might be able acquire the property. However, if you make a back-up offer you might want to offer less than your original bid given the

from the insurance company over a month before you persuaded our client to pay the same balance after Medicare paid its portion. Here are some details. The amount of the check was $212.78 because it was a bulk check to your firm. It was paid by a virtual credit card with confirmation token XXXXXXXX. It was paid through the banking system XXXXX which you can phone at 855-XXX-XXXX to get help to fix your bookkeeping. Since you were paid the balance by both the client and his insurance company, please refund our client the $182.24 that you wrongfully persuaded him to pay you. information supplied by the agent. Speak with a Realtor, if you do not already have one. Question: Is it better to accept a cash-only buyer or one who has lender financing? Or does it make any difference to me? Answer: Assuming the two offers are for the same price, you want the all-cash model. Why? You don’t have to worry about lenders approving the buyer and no one will ask you to help defray the seller’s loan costs by paying points or closing costs. That said, you should expect an all cash buyer to require exactly the same verifications as you would find with a financed transaction -- title examination, survey, termite check, Home inspection, etc. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Renowned Wild West Author Art T. Burton to be featured on “CBS Sunday Morning” On Sunday, October 29, 2023, the distinguished Art T. Burton, a celebrated figure in the realm of Wild West literature and a retired History Professor from South Suburban College, will be featured on “CBS Sunday Morning,” delving into the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves. An alumnus of Governors State University, Burton stands as the foremost authority and biographer on Reeves, and his insightful commentary promises to shed new light on Reeves’ extraordinary law enforcement career and historical significance. With over three decades of meticulous historical research, Burton has been dedicated and instrumental in elevating Reeves’ profile, even though he is not affiliated with the development of the highlyanticipated series, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” produced by Taylor Sheridan, the visionary behind the hit Western series, “Yellowstone.” Starring the acclaimed David Oyelowo, the series is poised to make its debut on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 7 pm (CT) on Paramount. CBS’ interest in Burton’s expertise is a testament to his profound understanding of Reeves’ life and times. In February 2022, CBS-Tulsa, alongside news anchor Craig Day, featured Burton in an illuminating news segment dedicated to Bass Reeves. Further details about Art T. Burton and the enigmatic Bass Reeves can be explored on Burton’s official website: www.artburton.com
