South Suburban College to Host In-Person Family Reading Night on November 17 South Suburban College’s (SSC) Adult Volunteer Literacy Program is hosting a Family Reading Night event on Thursday, November 17, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. The event will occur at the Performing Arts Center of SSC’s main campus in South Holland, Illinois. The public is encouraged to attend the free event to learn more about community literacy while enjoying stories, youth activities, and live presentations. The activities for the event will include a live puppet show, face painting, balloon art, local authors, book readings, and a youth book giveaway. Community Partners include Markham Public Library’s book truck, Burst into Books, and Doughboy’s Catering. David Stephens, SSC Adult Literacy Grant Manager and Family Reading Night event coordinator, stated, “The literacy crisis in America is reaching critical mass. This directly affects an individual’s health and well-being. Illiteracy places an individual at a disadvantage in educational attainment, civic participation/voting activity and reduces a person’s employment opportunities leading

them to have less financial security. Literacy not only enriches an individual’s quality of life, but it also provides positive outcomes in their career and income.” Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults and children who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a difficult time with daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Adult Education Department administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE/GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). For more information about the Family Reading Night or the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, contact David Stephens, Adult Literacy Grants Manager, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email DStephens@ssc.edu. This event is sponsored in part by the SSC Foundation.

FSSA announces new campaign to support Hoosier youth that may be at-risk for justice involvement or substance misuse The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction is launching a new program to support Hoosier youth in building a stronger sense of self through the Believe in You campaign. The campaign includes resources focusing on specific topics and behaviors that have been identified as risk areas for alcohol and substance misuse, such as developing mental strength, positive thinking, coping techniques and self-control. Community groups or organizations that engage with youth are invited to consider adopting the program and encouraging youth to opt-in. Youth who engage with the Believe in You campaign will receive a series of weekly text messages that provide a mix of verbal and written support, education, polls, questions and links to a video portal. The videos focus on specific topics identified by Hoosier youth as critical points of importance to them and their mental wellness, including mental wellbeing support, inspirational stories and helpful information from mentors, health professionals, peers and influential members of the community. “Mental health challenges in adolescence can often lead to serious negative long-term impacts, especially when substance misuse is factored into the equation,” said Jay Chaudhary, director of the Division of Mental Health and Addiction. “DMHA is committed

to improving access to quality behavioral health services for children and adolescents across Indiana, but we know that there are significant unmet needs today. We are launching this new program to help fill that gap by giving youth who may be at-risk direct access to mental wellbeing tools.” As an added layer of encouragement, youth who take the campaign’s challenge to have a sponsor to guide them through program may be eligible to receive an additional incentive. At the end of each four-week challenge period, participants meet with their sponsor to discuss the program’s messaging and takeaways. In exchange, each participant may be eligible to receive a $10 gift card for their participation. While having a sponsor is encouraged for the campaign, it is not required for youth to opt-in. To opt in to the Believe in You direct message program, text BEYOU to 877.861.6807. Video content can be viewed by visiting the Believe in You video portal by clicking here. For additional information on how to leverage this program in your community, contact Amber Becker, DMHA Director of Child, Youth, and Family Systems, at amber.becker@fssa.in.gov or 317.232.8908 to sign up for a 30-minute virtual training session. Youth who are experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis can call 988 for immediate support.

Court Hearing Will Bring an End to Federal Oversight at Cook County Assessor’s Office Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi along with members of his executive staff will participate in a federal court hearing tomorrow at the Dirksen Federal Building. This hearing will find the Cook County Assessor’s Office (Assessor’s Office) in substantial compliance with a court order banning political influence in hiring decisions. The hearing will also bring an end to ten years of hiring oversight spurred by the Shakman case. The in-person hearing will take place at the Dirksen Federal Building (219 S. Dearborn, Chicago) on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 9:00am. No virtual viewing is available. “This is a great day for fairness and ethics in Cook County,” said Assessor Kaegi in advance of tomorrow’s hearing. “The taxpayers of Cook County can have confidence that the corrupting influence of politics will never again have a place in the Assessor’s Office.” The hearing will attest to a finding of substantial compliance

by the Assessor’s Office with a federal consent decree and dismiss the Cook County Assessor from the agreed court order which governed its hiring practices since 2012. Assessor Kaegi, Chief of Staff Sarah Garza Resnick, and Chief Legal Officer Tatia Gibbons will be available for interviews after the hearing.
