South Suburban College to Host In-Person Family Reading Night on November 17 South Suburban College’s (SSC) Adult Volunteer Literacy Program is hosting a Family Reading Night event on Thursday, November 17, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. The event will occur at the Performing Arts Center of SSC’s main campus in South Holland, Illinois. The public is encouraged to attend the free event to learn more about community literacy while enjoying stories, youth activities, and live presentations. The activities for the event will include a live puppet show, face painting, balloon art, local authors, book readings, and a youth book giveaway. Community Partners include Markham Public Library’s book truck, Burst into Books, and Doughboy’s Catering. David Stephens, SSC Adult Literacy Grant Manager and Family Reading Night event coordinator, stated, “The literacy crisis in America is reaching critical mass. This directly affects an individual’s health and well-being. Illiteracy places an individual at a disadvantage in educational attainment, civic participation/voting activity and reduces a person’s employment opportunities leading

them to have less financial security. Literacy not only enriches an individual’s quality of life, but it also provides positive outcomes in their career and income.” Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults and children who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a difficult time with daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Adult Education Department administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE/GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). For more information about the Family Reading Night or the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, contact David Stephens, Adult Literacy Grants Manager, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email DStephens@ssc.edu. This event is sponsored in part by the SSC Foundation.

FSSA announces new campaign to support Hoosier youth that may be at-risk for justice involvement or substance misuse The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction is launching a new program to support Hoosier youth in building a stronger sense of self through the Believe in You campaign. The campaign includes resources focusing on specific topics and behaviors that have been identified as risk areas for alcohol and substance misuse, such as developing mental strength, positive thinking, coping techniques and self-control. Community groups or organizations that engage with youth are invited to consider adopting the program and encouraging youth to opt-in. Youth who engage with the Believe in You campaign will receive a series of weekly text messages that provide a mix of verbal and written support, education, polls, questions and links to a video portal. The videos focus on specific topics identified by Hoosier youth as critical points of importance to them and their mental wellness, including mental wellbeing support, inspirational stories and helpful information from mentors, health professionals, peers and influential members of the community. “Mental health challenges in adolescence can often lead to serious negative long-term impacts, especially when substance misuse is factored into the equation,” said Jay Chaudhary, director of the Division of Mental Health and Addiction. “DMHA is committed

to improving access to quality behavioral health services for children and adolescents across Indiana, but we know that there are significant unmet needs today. We are launching this new program to help fill that gap by giving youth who may be at-risk direct access to mental wellbeing tools.” As an added layer of encouragement, youth who take the campaign’s challenge to have a sponsor to guide them through program may be eligible to receive an additional incentive. At the end of each four-week challenge period, participants meet with their sponsor to discuss the program’s messaging and takeaways. In exchange, each participant may be eligible to receive a $10 gift card for their participation. While having a sponsor is encouraged for the campaign, it is not required for youth to opt-in. To opt in to the Believe in You direct message program, text BEYOU to 877.861.6807. Video content can be viewed by visiting the Believe in You video portal by clicking here. For additional information on how to leverage this program in your community, contact Amber Becker, DMHA Director of Child, Youth, and Family Systems, at amber.becker@fssa.in.gov or 317.232.8908 to sign up for a 30-minute virtual training session. Youth who are experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis can call 988 for immediate support.

Court Hearing Will Bring an End to Federal Oversight at Cook County Assessor’s Office Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi along with members of his executive staff will participate in a federal court hearing tomorrow at the Dirksen Federal Building. This hearing will find the Cook County Assessor’s Office (Assessor’s Office) in substantial compliance with a court order banning political influence in hiring decisions. Dearborn, Chicago) on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 9:00am. No virtual viewing is available. “This is a great day for fairness and ethics in Cook County,” said Assessor Kaegi in advance of tomorrow’s hearing. “The taxpayers of Cook County can have confidence that the corrupting influence of politics will never again have a place in the Assessor’s Office.” The hearing will attest to a finding of substantial compliance

by the Assessor’s Office with a federal consent decree and dismiss the Cook County Assessor from the agreed court order which governed its hiring practices since 2012. Assessor Kaegi, Chief of Staff Sarah Garza Resnick, and Chief Legal Officer Tatia Gibbons will be available for interviews after the hearing. Different and Divinely Designed Instead of us celebrating and thanking God for His intentional unique designing of us, we are too busy bickering, fighting, and asking God why He made us so different. We need to stop and celebrate how our differences can be a benefit and or an asset, our focus should be how well we fit and can work together. We are reminded that He created us all in His divine image and likeness. We must also remind others and ourselves that we are all fearfully and wonderfully made no matter what race, color, or creed we are. We are too focused on why God made some of us greater or lesser than others. Did God really create us to be separate or is it just the separation of sin? Some of us are still questioning His Sovereignty

and wondering is God progressive and powerful enough to make us one united people and to truly create a new citizenship here on earth? It would be great if I could bypass the church with this message of unity and just address those that do not belong to Him and understand Him. Unfortunately, this is not the case because Sunday morning is still very separated and segregated? But there is hope because there are churches in South Holland and throughout the World that are partnering at the cross and in everyday life, that believe the biblical picture written by God is well worth the effort. We are only as successful as our community, neighbors, and families when we take the time to look back, reach back and connect with each other.

The“Big Lab”Failed to File the Claim WOODROW WILCOX

On November 1, 2022, I worked on a case for a client in Highland, Indiana. I checked the bill and found that the big lab company failed to file the claim with Medicare. But they wanted our client to pay the bill. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the “big lab” company. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks $534.31 on Account Number XXXXXX-XXXX for services rendered on 7/20/21. I phoned Medicare to request a copy of the Medicare Summary Notice about this claim to be sent to our client. But Medicare representative XXXXXXXXX XXXXX told me that no claim was ever filed for this Medicare enrollee during July 2021. So, your firm NEVER FILED A CLAIM for services on 07/20/2021. You know that sending a bill directly to a patient on Medicare without

filing a claim with Medicare is against Medicare rules and regulation. You caused this problem. Fix it by filing the claim with Medicare. Do not report this bill as being tardy to “ding” our client’s credit report or we will help her to file appropriate complaints against your firm. All the help I am giving this client is FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps our clients with such Medicare billing problems at no charge to show our clients that we really do care about them. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to Senior Care Insurance Services? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.

On the Market vs In the Market MIKE BUDER There is a big difference between a seller being on the market vs being in the market. To put a home on the market a seller hires a real estate agent to list their house for sale. If that home is in the market, agents and buyers view the property and make offers to purchase it. A fishing analogy would be if the bait is floating on top of the water, but the fish are in the lake 25 feet below, the fisherman will get a nice suntan but will not hook any trout. The wise angler will continue to lower his bait until the fish begin to bite. A novice will curse the fishing guide, and consider taking up golf as a new hobby. Due to the speedy escalation in mortgage rates this year, optimistic sellers are now taking a reality gut punch as buyer demand has plummeted in the South Suburbs of Chicago. The 25 to 30% jump in prices over the past two years in addition to mortgage rates moving from 3.2% in January to 7%+ today has removed many prospective buyers due to affordability. In her book Death and Dying, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross said there are 5 stages of dying: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Many home sellers go through 5 similar stages on the way to a sold sign or expired listing. Let’s look at those stages in detail. DENIAL is a psychological defense mechanism that lets a person “off the hook” for any responsibility for a problem, such as a home not selling. Many times, the agent becomes the scapegoat. It’s always easier to blame a realtor than locate the real problem.

Frequently the problem is improper pricing, greed and impatience. ANGER is a choice. It is seldom a wise choice. Some people actually enjoy “lighting their hair on fire”. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to gain attention. It’s always easier to “curse the darkness, than to light a candle”. BARGAINING is a pre-assumed position that many overpriced sellers never get to. They make statements like “if the buyer makes me an offer, I’ll negotiate with them” or “why can’t the buyer make me an offer?” Fish (and buyers) are very smart. They usually wait for the bait to be lowered to their level before they bite. Even flying fish seldom jump right into the boat. DEPRESSION can be avoided if a sellers “mental maps” reflect reality. They seldom do. That’s why some listings simply expire without selling. Many sellers never ask their agents what they would do if the property were their own. ACCEPTANCE of an offer is what happens when a seller puts their home on the market and then adjusts their pricing into the market. Selling a house simply means ACCEPTING REAL ESTATE REALITIES. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 10 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com. Here’s your ‘recession survival’ checklist SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN It’s unfortunate, but recessions are a fairly normal part of the economic landscape. When a recession occurs, how might you be affected? The answer depends on your individual situation, but regardless of your circumstances, you might want to consider the items in this recession survival checklist: Assess your income stability. If your employment remains steady, you may not have to do anything different during a recession. But if you think your income could be threatened or disrupted, you might want to consider joining the “gig economy” or looking for freelance or consulting opportunities. Review your spending. Look for ways to trim your spending, such as canceling subscription services you don’t use, eating out less often, and so on. Pay down your debts. Try to reduce your debts, especially those with high interest rates. Plan your emergency fund. If you haven’t already built one, try to create an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account. Review your protection plan. If your health or life insurance is tied to your work, a change in your employment status could jeopardize this coverage. Review all your options for replacing these types of protection. Also, look for ways to lower premiums on home or auto insurance, without significantly sacrificing coverage, to free up money that could be used for health/ life insurance. Keep your long-term goals in mind. Even if you adjust your portfolio during times of volatility, don’t lose sight of your long-term goals. Trying to “outsmart” the market with short-term strategies can often lead to missteps and missed opportunities. Don’t stop investing. If you can afford it, try to continue investing. Coming out of a

recession, stock prices tend to bottom out and then rebound, so if you had headed to the investment “sidelines,” you would have missed the opportunity to benefit from a market rally. Revisit your performance expectations. During a bear market, you will constantly be reminded of the decline of a particular market index, such as the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average. But instead of focusing on these short-term numbers, look instead at the long-term performance of your portfolio to determine if you’re still on track toward meeting your goals. Assess your risk tolerance. If you find yourself worrying excessively about declines in your investment statements, you may want to reevaluate your tolerance for risk. One’s risk tolerance can change over time — and it’s important you feel comfortable with the amount of risk you take when investing. Keep diversifying. Diversification is always important for investors — by having a mix of stocks, mutual funds and bonds, you can reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. To cite one example: Higherquality bonds, such as Treasuries, often move in the opposite direction of stocks, so the presence of these bonds in your portfolio, if appropriate for your goals, can be valuable when market conditions are worsening. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification cannot guarantee profits or protect against all losses in a declining market.) A recession accompanied by a bear market is not pleasant. But by taking the appropriate steps, you can boost your chances of getting through a difficult period and staying on track toward your important financial goals. RICHARD ZEKVELD Two weeks ago, we talked about Bible heroes. We discussed the importance of reading the ‘hero narratives’ of the Old Testament messianically, not moralistically. In other words, our primary focus needs to be on what God is moving his plan of salvation forward in each narrative, pointing to our ultimate Hero, Jesus Christ. Take David and Goliath. Israel’s warriors cower in the giant’s presence as he challenges them to a duel. Then David shows up and accepts the challenge. He takes down the giant in the name of the LORD his God. We admire his faith in God and the courage it produces. But if that’s all we get out of the narrative, we miss the rich depth of its message. And we miss Christ at the center of it. The book of Judges narrates how God’s people turned from him to worship the gods of the nations around them. They fell under the power and influence of those godless nations. Israel needed a king to rescue them from those nations and lead them back into covenant fellowship with the LORD. The Philistines are Israel’s latest oppressors. They confront Israel in a ‘battle by champion.’ Ancient armies sometimes chose two champions to represent them in battle. When a champion won, his people shared in his victory. The Philistines put forward their champion – the formidable Goliath. God himself raises up a champion to deliver his people – David. Israel shares in his victory. Later, he ascends the throne as king, delivers Israel from the Philistines and lead them back into covenant fellowship with the LORD. This points to Jesus, Son of David, our Champion who defeated sin, Satan, and death in our place. Through faith, we share in his victory. In him, we, too, can overcome. Question: We are considering moving to an adult community with an HOA. Are HOA’s a good thing or do they pose too many rules? Answer: HOA’s are set up to protect a subdivision. In principle they are a good thing. Would you want a neighbor to park a huge diesel truck or camper next to your property? Would you like a next-door neighbor who has foot high weeds all over his lawn? You get the message. HOA’s have the power to protect the integrity of the neighborhood. Here are a few bad examples that I’ve heard and experienced through the years regarding HOA rules… You Can’t Have a Hose. One particular HOA is seriously trying to ban hoses. According to this resident, you can’t even have one in your backyard. We need a hose back there for several reasons, from cleaning up things to watering the backyard. Hoses are crucial to houses! One couple got fined for the vines growing up on the side of their house. The kicker is that the plant is their neighbor’s. It’s encroached on their property and begun growing on their wall, but they’re the ones that owe the HOA for the violation. Not sure why they wanted vines growing on their house.

The HOA of this neighborhood will not allow any holiday decorations up after the first week of January. I get that some people tend to procrastinate taking off their Christmas decorations and might leave them on for a full month after the holiday, but do you really care? I guess some do care. The HOA cut their privacy bushes down by HALF without asking. The shrubs were well trimmed and provided privacy and shade to their home. This was rude and sounds like trespassing. Most of these are exceptions, not the rules. Talk to any prospective neighbors about the HOA. They will help you. Remember HOA violations mean warning letters and fines. But an HOA is only as good as the people running it. So, when you vote, make sure you know who you are voting for. Power does strange things to some people who crave it. HOA’s can get a bit too intrusive, but for the most part they help keep property values up. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? With degrees in engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, he was presented with the opportunity to serve as a meteorologist for the Strategic Air Command in the U.S. Air Force during the early years of the Cold War. After three years of guiding U.S. warplanes around the world from a command center in Ohio -- during which time he also married and started a family -- Roger chose to return to civilian life in Chicago. Engineering jobs at Standard Oil and Amoco Chemical awaited his return from the service, and 10 years later he moved to an engineering management position at Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical in Dolton, Illinois. Roger’s love of climate and weather were always with him, and while in the corporate world, his military forecasting experience led him to fill-in roles on ABC-7 and Channel 9, and eventually
