The Towle Theater is pleased to welcome back Jim LaPietra to their stage. Jim was last seen in the musical Reefer Madness, as the Lecturer and previously appeared in the 2021 Fabulous 50’s Christmas. BBB Business Tip: Black Friday Stats Every Small Business Owner Should Know By Rick Walz - President/CEO BBB Serving Northern Indiana Black Friday is quickly approaching, and if you haven’t started thinking about your marketing activities yet, then it’s time to get a jump on it. However, before you can jump into the creative process, you need to take the time to study last year’s trends and stats to create marketing campaigns that will perform. Black Friday is considered the most important retail day of the year and is a huge opportunity for small businesses to increase their sales and gain new customers. With the right approach, you can take advantage of this and create a profitable holiday. Eight Black Friday stats you need to know: 1. 76% of consumers say free shipping is a key influence in their buying decisions on Black Friday. Free shipping is a huge factor in consumer decisions when it comes to Black Friday. 76% of consumers say that free shipping is most likely to lead them to make a purchase. When it comes to making the most of their savings, consumers head online to search for not only the best deals on specific products, but they don’t want to have to pay for the added convenience of not having to leave their homes to shop. 2. 59% of men say they could be convinced to shop Black Friday sales, compared to 57% of women. When people think of Black Friday shopping, most assume females will be the ones to take full advantage of getting up and heading out to save a few bucks. However, as of 2021, men have taken the helm! 59% of men stated that if presented with the right deal, they could be convinced to shop Black Friday deals compared to 57% of women. 3. Shoppers aged 18-24 are most likely to shop Black Friday sales (69%). Young shoppers are the most likely to shop for Black Friday deals. In fact, 69% of shoppers aged 18-24 stated they plan to shop Black Friday sales. This is especially true for in-store shopping, as older generations don’t really care to stand in long lines or wait in traffic to save a few dollars. 4. Brick-and-mortar retail is expected to surge 7.2% - totaling approximately $1.7 trillion. Brick-and-mortar retail is expected to see an increase of 7.2% in sales, totaling $1.7 trillion. This is encouraging as the last few years have seen rather dismal sales numbers for instore shopping due to the global pandemic and stay-at-home orders. However, thanks to

various precautions, foot traffic has increased over the past year. 5. E-commerce sales are expected to fall below 10% - totaling approximately $1 trillion. E-commerce sales will fall below 10%, although sales are forecasted to pass $1 trillion for the first time. While many precautions are in place that promote a safe in-store shopping experience, millions of Americans plan to take advantage of various shop-at-home specials this year. 6. Cyber Monday is forecasted to outperform Black Friday by nearly $1.8 billion. While many businesses plan to include online sales as part of their Black Friday marketing strategies, Cyber Monday is, again, expected to outperform Black Friday sales by nearly $1.8 billion. Typically, this is thanks to the fact that Cyber Monday has earned its reputation for online holiday deals. However, with more shoppers still choosing to make online purchases this holiday season, the right deal could convince your audience to purchase on Black Friday instead of Cyber Monday, which is why it’s crucial you perform the right research to see what your competitors are planning. 7. 43% of all online shopping was done on smartphones. In 2021, approximately 43% of all online shopping on Black Friday was done via a smartphone. What does that mean for your small business? If you have an online presence, then you need to make sure your website is mobile-friendly and easy for consumers to use. Otherwise, you risk losing business to the competition. 8. Between 2019 and 2020, social media posts for Black Friday saw an average increase in comments of 1301.7%. Considering a social media campaign this Black Friday? It could prove more beneficial than you may think! Between 2019 and 2020, posts regarding Black Friday saw a massive increase in engagement, with an approximate increase of 1301.7%. That’s genuine engagement that can help boost not only sales but brand awareness and lead generation. However, it’s vital that you take the time to respond to this engagement appropriately and quickly, as 75% of consumers will expect a reply from you within 24 hours. To learn more ways to improve your business practices, go to bbb.org and visit the BBB Small Business Resources page. You can also visit BBB.org/get-accredited to learn how to stand out as BBB Accredited business.

WOODROW WILCOX On November 6, 2023, I wrote a letter to a hospital and its medical biller to complain about bad math on the bills to our client. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I wrote. Our client sent to our firm two bills from your firm for our review with dates 9/17/23 and 10/20/23. I found some big problems with your bills. You seek a balance of $39.02 from our client on ID # XXXXXXXX. The bill is NOT clear about the date of service but it looks like 03/30/23. Your bills state that the original charge was $210, that you were paid $210 by insurance, that there is a $39.02 downward insurance adjustment, but that the patient still owes $39.02. How does $210 minus $210 minus $39.02 equal a $39.02 balance? Whether you are using a person or a computer to do your math, that math flunks third grade math. How many other mistakes on other bills are you making? Should we help our client complain about your bad math to Medicare or the consumer protection division of Indiana’s Attorney General? I phoned the patient’s insurance company. It reported that there is some kind of billing

problem with your firm and some other rural medical firms. That insurance company is trying to figure out the problem and solve it. As you can see, the mathematical mistakes that your firm is doing is at least a significant cause of the problem. Please, be patient and communicate with the secondary insurer which is Bankers Fidelity Life Insurance with the phone 866-458-7499. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps clients with similar medical bill problems without charge to demonstrate that we really care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our insurance agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in Medicare medical billing. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA When I was younger, my family was playing with our dog in our unfenced front yard. A bicycle went past, and our friendly dog bolted — determined to make a new friend. My brothers and I ran after him. We ran until we couldn’t see him anymore and were too tired to run farther. (We did get him back just a short while later.) In Psalm 23, David says this of the Lord: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” That word “follow” (Radaph in Hebrew) can also be translated more aggressively as “pursue,” “chase down,” or even “harass.” There’s a determination to it. There’s an insistence. There’s a run-until-you-catch-your-dog resolve to it. And David knew about being followed aggressively — he spent many harrowing days being pursued by a man named Saul, who was intent on finding and killing him. So when David says the Lord’s goodness and mercy (sometimes translated loving kindness) will chase him for all his days, he’s using that word very intentionally. God’s goodness is aggressive. It’s insistent. It doesn’t stop until it reaches its goal. And that goal is you and me. One of my favorite songs in recent months has been Bethel Music’s “The Goodness of God.” The bridge of that song proclaims this message, “Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me.” No matter what else is pursuing you in your life — sickness, heartache, depression, addiction, broken relationships, financial disaster — you can rest assured that you’re being pursued by something and someone far more powerful. The Lord will not stop chasing you until he’s draped his goodness around you like a blanket. Until you’ve surrendered to his warm embrace of loving kindness. Will you keep running? Or will you let God’s goodness and love catch you today? Josh Bootsma Member, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

BBB Scam Alert: Social Media Gift Exchange is an Illegal Pyramid Scheme By Rick Walz - President/CEO BBB Serving Northern Indiana A “Secret Santa” around the office or with friends and family can be fun. A gift exchange among online friends you haven’t met is a little different and carries a heftier consequence. While these gift exchanges look like innocent fun, they are pyramid schemes and illegal. The “Secret Sister” gift exchange campaign quickly became popular several years ago through Facebook posts promising participants would receive up to 36 gifts in exchange for sending one gift. Each holiday season, the scheme pops back up. A newer version of this scam revolves around exchanging bottles of wine; another suggests purchasing $10 gifts online. You might see references to receiving “happy mail” or doing the exchange “for the good of the sisterhood.” During the 2023 holiday season, be aware of variations of this theme that may crop up on social media. How the scam works: The scheme starts with a convincing invitation, either by email or social media, to sign up for a great, fun program. All you must do is provide your name and address and the personal information of a few additional friends and tack this information onto a list that’s already started of people you’ve never met on the internet. Next, it’s your turn to send an email or social media invitation to send a modest gift or bottle of wine to a

stranger along with their friends, family, and contacts. A newer twist on the idea asks you to give your e-transfer email and ask users to pick a name off a list and send money to strangers to “pay it forward.” There was another new twist called “Secret Santa Dog,” where you are asked to buy a $10 gift for a “secret dog.” In all of these versions, you give away your personal information, and you’re left with buying and shipping gifts or money to unknown individuals in hopes that the favor is reciprocated by receiving the promised number of gifts in return. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen. Like any other pyramid scheme, it relies on recruiting individuals to keep the scam afloat. Once people stop participating in the gift exchange, the gift supply also stops, leaving hundreds of disappointed people without their promised gifts or cash. It should be noted that pyramid schemes are illegal in the US. The U.S. Postal Inspection Services explains that these gift exchanges are considered a form of gambling and that participants could be penalized for jail time, fines, or a lawsuit for mail fraud. There is another layer of danger to participating in these schemes. When signing up, the alleged campaign organizer asks for personal information such as a mailing address or an email. With just a few pieces of information, cyber thieves could expose you to future scams or commit identity theft.

The next time someone promises a bounty of gifts or cash by mail, email, or social media, BBB recommends the following: Ignore it! Keep in mind that pyramid schemes are international. Chain letters involving money or valuable items and promising big returns are illegal. Stop and ask, is it worth breaking the law? Report it instead to the U.S. Postal Inspection Services. Report social media posts. If you receive an invitation to join a pyramid scheme on social media, report it to Facebook by clicking in the upper right-hand corner and selecting “report post” or “report photo.” Never give your personal information to strangers. This will open you up to identity theft and other scams. Be wary of false claims. Some pyramid schemes try to win your confidence by claiming they’re legal and endorsed by the government. These imposter schemes are false, as the government will never endorse illegal activity. No matter what they claim, pyramid schemes will not make you rich. You will receive little to no money back on your “investment” or gift exchange. For more information and to learn how to protect yourself, Google “BBB 10 Steps to Avoid Scams”. If you spot a scam, whether you have lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc. gov. Your story can help protect consumers from similar scams.

Real Estate Specialists

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Common Questions with Answers from various experts in the Real estate field: Will 2024 be a better time to buy a house? Experts predict that there is no housing market crash looming in 2024. Lending standards are much more strict now than they were before the Great Recession, and with low inventory and high demand both continuing, the housing market is not likely to enter a recession in 2024. Should I buy a house now or wait for recession? While it’s true that recessions can create opportunities to purchase homes at potentially lower prices, it’s not guaranteed. Waiting for a recession to buy a house may not be the best strategy as home prices could remain high regardless of a recession. Plus, no recession is predicted for 2024. What will the 30-year mortgage rates be in 2024? Fannie Mae projects 30-year fixed-rate mortgages will start 2024 at an average of 7.1% and fall to 6.7% by Q4 2024. In 2024, do not anticipate mortgage rates to drop significantly. This is not a widely accepted projection. Others predict interest rates to drop to around 6%. Again, they are predicting future outcomes. What month do houses sell best? Here’s how each month of the year ranked

for the best time to sell a house. The highestearning months are, in ranking order, May, June, July and April. These four months saw the largest purchase transactions. How do you sell a house in a bad economy? Make the Home as Attractive as Possible If you want to make sure your home is competitive on the market, make it as attractive as possible. By investing a little bit of money in repairs and upgrades, you might be able to attract high-quality buyers interested in paying what your home is worth. Why is my house so hard to sell? Your home may not be as attractive as the comparable homes you’re competing with in your area. You may not have enough photos, or enough quality photos, to attract interest in your home. Your home is overpriced based on what it offers potential buyers. We think real estate is still a good, long term investment. As Mark Twain once said: “Buy land, they aren’t making it anymore.” E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? Y? WHY NOT!

WHAT CAN’T YOU LET GO? by Janice R Newman So often it seems like we hit a brick wall as we work towards pursuing our goals and aspirations. The brick wall creates a barrier to prevent us from moving forward, reaching our goals, and improving ourselves. The barrier represents something you must let go of that has been holding you back. But what is that barrier? You must determine what has been holding you back from reaching your goals, so you can free yourself from it and move on. You may be questioning yourself; what am I holding onto that I can’t let go? In pursuing our goals, we often face invisible barriers that lie inside us that hinder our progress. These invisible barriers are not as obvious as concrete barriers that we can see, feel, and associate with such as a lack of money, a degree, or employment. The invisible barriers take deep soul-searching as they lie within us. These barriers take various forms – self-doubt, fear of failure, toxic relationships, or even insecurity. To let go you must identify the barrier that must be defeated. This involves reflecting on recurring patterns or obstacles that you encounter while pursuing your goals and aspirations. What recurring specific themes, thoughts, fears, habits, and emotions consistently pop up to sabotage your efforts? You can sabotage your efforts with a limiting belief ingrained in your mind or the comfort of staying within your current circumstances. Honest introspection is the key to determining the barriers that you can’t let go. Fears are our biggest detriment to success. Fear of failure, success, or what others think of you are barriers we struggle with. If you’re afraid of what others will think of you if you fail or the increased responsibility of success, you will self-destruct and not reach your goals. Limited beliefs create barriers that we need to liberate ourselves from. Limiting beliefs are the thoughts we hold about ourselves, others, and the world, which constrain our actions, and behaviors, and control our lives. They are self-defeating and negative by becoming a hindrance to our personal development. Pay

attention to recurring themes and become aware of negative thoughts and self-talk. How often do you say the words “can’t” and “won’t”? Question the validity of those beliefs by asking yourself if the belief is based on facts or assumptions. Challenge if holding on to the belief is helping or hindering your growth. If you’re holding on to the limiting belief that you must be naturally talented in a specific field to pursue the career, and you don’t possess that talent, then you may feel restricted from exploring or thriving in that field. Reframe negative self-limiting thoughts with more positive empowering ones. Change those thoughts to “I can do this” and “I have the ability”. Always utilize affirmations to reinforce positive beliefs. Challenge all-ornothing thinking that comes along with beliefs by embracing a realistic perspective and acknowledging that mistakes and setbacks are part of the learning process. Challenge your inner critic by showing self-compassion, kindness, and encouragement to yourself. We can be our harshest critics that build barriers. Seek objective constructive feedback from family, friends, and God about your beliefs and seek alternative viewpoints. Finally, gain wisdom and understanding from God on what you can’t let go of, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth came knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:6 (NIV). Seek divine guidance for discernment into your challenging beliefs that are preventing you from living God’s will for your life. Remember identifying and challenging limiting beliefs are vital for personal development and achieving your goals. These beliefs are embedded in our subconscious mind and influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By recognizing and challenging these beliefs, you can let go of the barriers that are preventing forward movement to open yourself to new possibilities, higher selfesteem, and pursue your goals with purpose and greater confidence. Financial Advice Column

Do your investments match your goals? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN As you go through life, you’ll have various financial goals — and to achieve them, you’ll need to invest. But just recognizing the need to invest is not as useful as matching specific types of accounts or investments with specific goals. How can you make these connections? Let’s look at some common goals and how they could possibly be met with appropriate accounts and investments: • Saving for a down payment on a house – When you’re saving for a down payment, you want a certain amount of money available at a certain time — so, for this goal, you won’t want to take too much risk. Consequently, you might consider investing in certificates of deposit (CDs), which will pay you regular interest payments and return your principal when the CDs mature. CDs are issued in a range of maturities, from one month to 10 years. Other vehicles you might consider are money market accounts or other cash equivalents. • Saving for a child’s education – If you have children, and you’d like to help them pay for some form of higher education, you may want to consider a 529 education savings plan. Any earnings growth in a 529 plan is federally tax free, provided the withdrawals are used for qualified education expenses, and you may also receive state tax benefits. A 529 plan can be used for college, approved trade school programs, student loan repayments and some K-12 costs. And if the child you’ve named as a beneficiary chooses not to continue their education, and doesn’t need the money in a 529 plan, you can generally switch beneficiaries to another immediate family member. • Saving for retirement – This is the one

goal that will remain consistent throughout your working years — after all, you could spend two or even three decades in retirement, so you’ll need to accumulate as many financial resources as you can to pay for those years. Fortunately, you likely have access to several good retirement-savings vehicles. If you work for a business, you might have a 401(k) plan, which offers you the chance to put away money on a taxdeferred basis. (If you have a Roth option in your 401(k), your withdrawals can be tax free, although, unlike a traditional 401(k), your contributions won’t lower your taxable income.) If you work for a public school or a nonprofit organization, you may be able to participate in a 403(b) plan, which is quite similar to a 401(k), and the same is true if you work for a state or local government, where you might have a 457(b) plan. And even if you invest in any of these plans, you can probably also contribute to an IRA, which gives you another chance to invest on a tax-deferred basis (or tax-free basis, if you’re eligible for a Roth IRA). Try to take full advantage of whatever retirement plans are available to you. Here’s one final point to keep in mind: While some investments and accounts are appropriate for certain goals, they may not necessarily be suitable for your individual situation — so keep all your options in mind and take the steps that are right for you.
