Visitors invited to see Christmas trees from around the world brighten office of County Treasurer Pappas for 20th year Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas invites visitors to see nearly 100 Christmas trees and other displays that celebrate cultural diversity this holiday season. This is the 20th year of “Christmas Trees from Around the World,” a display of 3-foot trees. Members of various ethnic and religious communities decorated the trees to represent their heritage. A Christian Nativity scene, an African American Kwanzaa Kinara, a Hindu Prayer Thali and a Jewish Menorah also are displayed. “This celebration of diversity marks its 20th year as a Chicago holiday tradition,” Pappas said. “People working or shopping downtown are invited to visit the Treasurer’s Office, see the beautiful decorations and learn how different cultures celebrate the holidays.” The trees are adorned not only with ornaments, tinsel and lights, but also animals, flowers, fruit, candles, plates, boats, stars, flags, dolls and other items. The display will be up from Monday, Nov. 27, until Jan. 2, 2024, in Room 112 of the Cook County Building, 118 N. Clark St., Chicago. South African Gold Coin Donated in Libertyville A donated gold coin valued at $1,200 was discovered in a Salvation Army Red Kettle in Libertyville, Illinois Thursday evening. The anonymous contribution will allow The Salvation Army to show support and love to families who are struggling to stay in their homes, put a warm meal on the table, and provide Christmas gifts for their children this season. The first gold coin of the season is a South African 1/2 Krugerrand. This gold coin was dropped inside a kettle outside the Jewel-Osco at 1300 S Milwaukee Ave, Libertyville. All Red Kettle donations stay local, and this gold coin will help fund the programs and services in the Waukegan and Libertyville community. “There’s an increasing need for assistance as more migrant families come into our area looking for rent assistance and clothing vouchers, that’s where this gift will help, said Major Dan Faundez, Corps Officer at The Salvation Army Waukegan Corps.
“This will also be key for supplies in our pantry. We’ve had to reduce the amount we’ve been able to hand out, we’re hoping this will help us continue to provide those services.” The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign dates back to 1891 in San Francisco. Gold and silver coins donated to The Salvation Army Red Kettles have become a much-anticipated holiday tradition of giving, and we are so grateful to these thoughtful donors for their support and the impact they are having on our community. The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division received ten gold coins during the 2023 Red Kettle campaign. This holiday season, millions of Americans, including our neighbors here in Chicago, continue to struggle with the ongoing impacts of inflation and the pandemic. The Salvation Army is committed to serving those in need during Christmas and beyond.

Flourish Church Joins Forces with Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana to Build a Brighter Future [Gary] - Flourish Church is delighted to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana aimed to increase home ownership in Gary, Indiana. Flourish Church recently took a special collection that raised $17,320 in a show of unwavering support for Habitat’s mission, marking the beginning of a collaborative effort to expand affordable housing in the community. Senior Pastor of Flourish Church Dexter Harris, a firm believer in the transformative power of Habitat’s work, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership. “At Flourish Church, we believe in the power of community and the importance of providing stable homes for families. Habitat for Humanity’s mission resonates deeply with our values, and we are committed to playing a role in building a brighter future for residents of Gary and those in need.” The $17,320 raised by Flourish Church will contribute directly to supporting the construction of a Habitat home, which will offer hope and stability to a family in need in Lake County, Indiana. Pastor Harris sees this partnership as an opportunity to inspire other faith leaders to join the cause. “I encourage my fellow faith leaders to consider matching or surpassing this generous gift,” Pastor Harris remarked. “Imagine the impact we can make together. My hope is that, by this time next year, we can come together to fund the construction of an entire Habitat home, to stabilize a family and help them build a future.” Flourish Church and Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana invites the community to rally behind this initiative, fostering collaboration that goes beyond the boundaries of any one organization. SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN It’s been a bumpy year for the financial markets — which means that some of your investments may have underperformed or lost value. Can you use these losses to your advantage? It’s possible. If you have some investments that have lost value, you could sell them to offset taxable capital gains from other investments. If your losses exceed gains for the year, you could use the remaining losses to offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income. And any amount over $3,000 can be carried forward to offset gains in future years. This “tax-loss harvesting” can be advantageous if you plan to sell investments that you’ve held in taxable accounts for years and that have grown significantly in value. And you might receive some gains even if you take no action yourself. For example, when you own mutual funds, the fund manager can decide to sell stocks or other investments within the fund’s portfolio and then pay you a portion of the proceeds. These payments, known as capital gains distributions, are taxable to you whether you take them as cash or reinvest them back into the fund. Still, despite the possible tax benefits of selling investments whose price has fallen, you need to consider carefully whether such a move is in your best interest. If an investment has a clear place in your holdings, and it offers good business fundamentals and favorable prospects, you might not want to sell it just because its value has dropped. On the other hand, if the investments you’re thinking of selling are quite similar to others you own, it might make sense to sell, take the tax loss and then use the proceeds of the sale to purchase new investments that can help fill any gaps in your portfolio. If you do sell an investment and reinvest
the funds, you’ll want to be sure your new investment is different in nature from the one you sold. Otherwise, you could risk triggering the “wash sale” rule, which states that if you sell an investment at a loss and buy the same or a “substantially identical” investment within 30 days before or after the sale, the loss is generally disallowed for income tax purposes. Here’s one more point to keep in mind about tax-loss harvesting: You’ll need to take into account just how long you’ve held the investments you’re considering selling. That’s because long-term losses are first applied against long-term gains, while shortterm losses are first applied against shortterm gains. (Long-term is defined as more than a year; short-term is one year or less.) If you have excess losses in one category, you can then apply them to gains of either type. Long-term capital gains are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on your income, while short-term gains are taxed at your ordinary income tax rate. So, from a tax perspective, taking short-term losses could provide greater benefits if your tax rate is higher than the highest capital gains rate. You’ll want to contact your tax advisor to determine whether tax-loss harvesting is appropriate for your situation — and you’ll need to do it soon because the deadline is Dec. 31. But whether you pursue this technique this year or not, you may want to keep it in mind for the future — because you’ll always have investment tax issues to consider. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My home is currently for sale. My agent says we should leave our home for all showings. We really feel it is best we are there. Suggestions? Answer: You’re not going to like our answer. We think your agent is giving you very sound advice. We advise our sellers to vacate the home for all showings. Never, ever, make your buyers feel uncomfortable in your home, otherwise they will exit quickly. Yes, it is an inconvenience to have to leave your home. But, we can assure you that buyers will spend more time in your home if you aren’t there, and they will talk about it openly with their partner. By doing this, they will become more emotionally vested in your home. Of course, no one will ever know as much about the home as the person that lives there. But you can certainly educate your agent. Place a “showing package” for your home and leave it in a prominent place. You can place seasonal photos, Home and neighborhood amenities, even a letter from the seller talking about their home. Sellers should be aware that at the very least, buyers feel uncomfortable when the owners are present, and that it can kill a sale. Buyers often won’t even open closet or cabinet doors when the seller is home, and

when they cannot view a house comfortably, they’ll hurry up and move on to the next one. Sellers like to talk, and not just about the house. You never know when a buyer will be turned off by the mood of the seller, or by a statement the seller makes. Buyers are there to look at the house, not chit chat about the weather or worse--politics and other controversial topics. Buyers might view a clingy seller as “desperate to sell.” The presence of a pesky seller who insists on overstating all the home’s positive benefits can appear too overpowering for a potential purchaser. You asked for our opinion. Here is some really good advice for you: If you must be home during a showing, then you should to go outside or stay put in one location, smile a lot, and not wander around with the agent and buyers. Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA In the Gospel of Luke, we read about Jesus on his way to Jerusalem. On his way, he encountered 10 men, all with leprosy. Leprosy is a highly-transferable skin disease, and in Jesus’ day, those with the disease lived as outcasts unless declared clean by a priest. So Jesus encounters 10 men with leprosy and tells them to go and see a priest. By the time they’d walked to do so, they were healed. What an amazing story of Jesus’ power and love for those on the borders of society — literally! But the story doesn’t end there. One man of the 10 comes back to Jesus. We learn he’s a Samaritan, which likely meant he lived a doubly-outcast life as both a leper and as a foreigner. Luke 17 describes the man’s response: “One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him — and he was a Samaritan.” Jesus responds, “‘Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?’ Then he said to him, ‘Rise and go; your faith has made you well.’” We don’t know what the other nine men did in response to their healing — I can’t imagine they didn’t jump for joy and go celebrate. But this one man remembered the source of his new health — and threw himself at Jesus’ feet in thanksgiving. Sometimes it’s harder for us to run to Jesus when we’re thankful than when we’re in need. It was easy for these men to cry out for help. But only one of them cried out in thankfulness. The Lord deserves the same fervent insistence in our thankfulness that we give Him in our cries for help. He deserves every ounce of thanks our hearts can give. Y? WHY NOT!
Having Gratitude in the Little Things by Janice R Newman
The Thanksgiving Day holiday brings feelings and thoughts of being thankful and appreciative for our lives, careers, family, friends, and even the simple little things in life. Although the holiday typically brings on the feeling of being thankful, the essence of thankfulness and gratitude for our lives should not be confined to one day but every day. However, it’s an unfortunate reality that many of us have acted ungrateful or unappreciative because often we don’t always get what we want so we’re left feeling unfulfilled and wishing or hoping for something different. In a world filled with desires and ambitions, it is quite easy to lose sight of the similar blessings that surround us daily. We find ourselves yearning for things we don’t have. It is crucial to shift our perspective to recognize that genuine gratitude is not based on our wants but rather on being appreciated for the blessings already present. We should focus on the often-overlooked little things we don’t think about to be appreciative for example waking up, having a job, not being hungry, shelter, friends and family, health and physical condition, mental soundness, having a job, and God. The simple act of waking up and being alive each morning is a profound gift. It signifies another day of opportunities to experience life and make an impact. We take for granted that tomorrow is always going to come. We wake up to go to our jobs the next morning with unemployment rates around 4% currently. Although, your job may not be what you desire, appreciate having one. There’s a joke “When did you start working? The day they threaten to fire me!” It’s too late to appreciate the job when it’s gone. Always appreciate the present even if you’re looking to make changes. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV), Paul implores, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” America is a thriving country where most
people don’t go to bed hungry or without shelter. There are tons of social programs that will provide food and shelter to those in need or provide financial subsidies. Being able to satisfy the necessities of food and shelter is a daily blessing often not thought about. Be appreciative of your health, approximately 45% of American adults have had a recent prescription. Good health, physical condition, and mental soundness allow us to engage in daily activities, pursue our passions, and experience life to the fullest. Taking a moment to appreciate simple things such as seeing, hearing, walking, breathing, talking, etc. Expressing gratitude for our family, friends, and relationships is often not shared. Taking the time to convey our appreciation fosters a culture of gratitude within our relationships that will foster an environment where everyone feels valued and appreciated. Gratitude has a rippling effect in relationships that emphasizes their importance and irreplaceable role in our lives. We can’t choose our family and they may not be what we want, but they might be what we need. No matter how bad we have it or how dissatisfied we are with our circumstances there are others unfortunately in the worst situations. Be grateful for the little things we don’t even think about. Job in the Bible lost everything but still he continued to praise, worship, and thank God for all. Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:11, NIV, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstance”. This encourages us to find gratitude in life in even the smallest often-overlooked things. So, this holiday season, express gratitude for everything even the little things, for we don’t always get what we want, we might get the little things we need as a blessing from God. Y? Why Not! November 16, 2023 – Today’s scammers want gift cards as payment, leaving those unaware of this tactic vulnerable to schemes designed to commit fraud. Better Business Bureau (BBB) research shows fraud reports to BBB Scam Tracker involving gift cards as a form of payment spiked in the first three quarters of 2023, up 50% from the same period the year prior. Scammers have doubled down on gift cards as a method to steal money from consumers – especially online shoppers – leading retailers to implement new fraud prevention solutions in response. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving Northern Indiana is warning consumers about gift card payment scams. These scams are on the rise, and scammers are using a variety of excuses to convince victims to buy gift cards and provide them with the numbers on the back of the cards. “Scammers love gift cards because they are easy to steal and impossible to track,” said Rick Walz, President and CEO of BBB Serving Northern Indiana. “Once a scammer has the numbers on the back of a gift card, they can quickly steal the money loaded on the card.” Here are some of the red flags of a gift card payment scam: • Someone calls you and claims to be from a government agency, utility company, or tech support company. They say that you owe them money and that you need to pay them immediately with a gift card. • Someone sends you an email or text message that claims to be from a company or organization that you know. The message says that you have won a prize or that you need to update your account information. They ask you to provide them with the numbers on the back of a gift card in order to claim your prize or update your account. • Someone posts an ad online selling a product or service that you are interested in. They ask you to pay them with a gift card. If you are contacted by someone who asks you to pay them with a gift card, be very cautious. Do not give out any personal information, and
do not provide the numbers on the back of a gift card. Here are some tips to help you avoid gift card payment scams: • Be wary of anyone asking for payment with a gift card, including “government” agencies. No legitimate government organization will ask you to pay with a gift card. • Never pay with a gift card for something that you can pay for with a credit card, debit card, or check. • If you suspect a scam, contact the gift card seller, the actual business or government organization supposedly asking for money, and BBB to ask if you are dealing with a scammer. To find contact information, go directly to the organization’s website rather than search for their customer service number, which can be spoofed by scammers. • Be especially wary of unsolicited emails, text messages, or social media messages that ask you to pay with a gift card. • Keep all information related to your purchase if you are scammed, because some retailers may require that information for refunds. • If you suspect fraud, act immediately, contact the gift card seller or the number on the back of the card to report it. • If you have been the victim of a gift card payment scam, report it to the BBB at BBB. org/ScamTracker and to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. • Visit BBB.org to check out a business or register a complaint or find out more about this scam and other scams. ABOUT BBB: For more than 100 years, the Better Business Bureau has been helping people find businesses, brands and charities they can trust. In 2022, people turned to BBB more than 160 million times for BBB Business Profiles on more than 5.2 million businesses and Charity Reports on 11,000 charities, all available for free at BBB.org. There are local, independent BBBs across the United States and Canada, including BBB Serving Northern Indiana, which serves 23 counties in Northern Indiana.

On February 17, 1951 they were married. They lived in Duluth until December, 1960 when they moved to South Holland, IL. They then moved to Perrysburg, OH in June, 1973. In 1979 they moved back to Illinois, settling in Crete. Her years in Crete were full of friends, golf, Crete Women’s Club and the Red Hats. Sue loved sewing and playing the piano, mostly by ear. Sue and Don had a very special group of friends called the Odd Couples. With this group they travelled, spent holidays together, went out to dinner and shared some very special times. American Cancer Society Hosts 48th Annual Great American Smokeout to Encourage a Smoke-Free Future In an effort to combat the leading cause of preventable death, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is hosting this year’s Great American Smokeout, encouraging people who smoke to make a plan to quit for a healthier future. Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the US, accounting for about 1 in 5 deaths each year. While cigarette smoking rates have continued to decline in recent years due in part to the success of smoking cessation efforts, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 28 million U.S. adults currently smoked cigarettes in 2021. For more than four decades, the American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November. The Great American Smokeout offers an opportunity for people who smoke to commit to smoke-free lives, not just for a day, but year-round. Empowered to Quit, a smoking cessation program developed by researchers at the American Cancer Society, is just one of the opportunities for support highlighted by the Great American Smokeout. Empowered to Quit helps people who smoke select
a quit date, understand and manage their cravings, regulate symptoms of withdrawal, and set reminders of why they chose to quit smoking. Participants receive tailored emails and tools designed for every step of their journey. Some benefits of quitting smoking are almost immediate. Those who have quit smoking report fewer illnesses such as colds and the flu, lower rates of bronchitis and pneumonia, and tend to feel healthier than people who still smoke. Just 20 minutes after quitting, your heart rate and blood pressure drop. In just 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal. In as little as 2 weeks to 3 months, your circulation improves and your lung function increases. In addition to smoking cessation, annual lung cancer screening is recommended for certain people and can reduce tobaccorelated deaths. The American Cancer Society recently announced updates to their lung cancer screening guideline, expanding eligibility to nearly five million more Americans who smoke or formerly smoked. The updated guideline recommends yearly screening for lung cancer for people aged 50 to 80 years old
who smoke or formerly smoked and have a 20-year or greater pack-year history. The guideline also eliminates the ‘years since quitting’ requirement. To make access to screenings easier, ACS has partnered with Color Health to offer a free screening access program. Learn more about The Great American Smokeout at https:// www.cancer.org/cancer/risk-prevention/tobacco/great-americansmokeout.html About the American Cancer Society The American Cancer Society is a leading cancer-fighting organization with a vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. For more than 100 years, we have been improving the lives of people with cancer and their families as the only organization combating cancer through advocacy, research, and patient support. Mrvan Announces HHS Grant Award for NWICA Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced that a federal grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been awarded to the Northwest Indiana Community Action Agency (NWICA). According to HHS, the NWICA will receive $250,000 under the Affordable Housing and Supportive Services Demonstration program. This funding will allow NWICA to expand its capacity to provide supportive services for affordable housing residents by hiring a new resident services coordinator and information technology analyst to further connect residents with essential social services. The funding also will aim to enhance support services for inhome care systems and also provide classes and coaching on topics related to health, workforce
Medicare Ruled Against the Bill WOODROW WILCOX
On November 1, 2023, I wrote a letter to a medical firm and its biller to tell them to stop billing our client. I could insist on that because I had proof that Medicare ruled against the bill to our client. With some editing to protect people’s privacy, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm and its medical billing service. The family of our client finally got the correct Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) with the report about the claim that you billed to our client for services on 08/05/2023. The MSN should have exactly the same information as what your firm got on the Medicare EOB form that was sent to you. Look at the claim and the footnote. Medicare ruled that your firm could not charge our client the $130 that you billed because “payment [for that service] is included in another service received on the same day.” By billing our client $130, I believe you are violating your legal obligation to abide
by Medicare’s ruling. You could appeal the ruling. But, as it stands now, you must not bill our client $130. So, until you get a favorable ruling because of an appeal, stop billing our client $130. All the help that I gave the client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps clients with such medical billing problems without any charge to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our insurance agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients of that firm save over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in Medicare medical billing. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

I am grateful for your dedication to the success of our community and ensuring that every individual has the necessary support to thrive in their endeavors.” CEO and President of NWICA, Jennifer Trowbridge stated, “At NWICA, we believe in the power of community and the potential within each individual. This grant fuels our commitment to providing comprehensive support; empowering residents with the tools they need to build a brighter future.”
Watch The Bishop Noll Marching Warriors In The Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade HAMMOND – For the 13th consecutive year, the Marching Warriors of Bishop Noll Institute will represent Northwest Indiana, Hammond and the Bishop Noll community in the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade. The band will be number 84 of the 168 units in the parade, which is an invitation only parade. The Marching Warriors have twice been named Best Band of the Parade. They will be performing “Angels on Parade” based on the ancient hymn “Angels We Have Heard on High,” which some historians say dates back as far as 2,000 years. The parade will be live streamed on Pluto
TV throughout the country and broadcast live in Chicagoland on the CW26. The parade begins at 8 a.m and will proceed down State Street from Balboa to Randolph. The Chicago Thanksgiving Parade is the second most viewed parade in the country after the New YorkCity Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Bishop Noll musicians are also preparing for a Christmas concert next month. The BNI Christmas Concert will take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 16 in the BNI auditorium. For more information on how to enroll in Bishop Noll for the 2023-24 school year, visit bishopnoll. org or email admissions@bishopnoll.org.

The Salvation Army and The Toyota Lexus Minority Owners Dealership Association Distribute Food Boxes to Those In Need Over 100 boxes of food distributed Saturday morning. The Salvation Army partnered with the Toyota Lexus Minority Owners Dealership Association (TLMODA) to distribute food boxes to families in need Saturday, November 18. Lieutenant Shannon Norcross of the Blue Island Corps was on hand at Advantage Toyota of River Oaks to support with families with boxes of food just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Over 100 boxes of food were distributed to those in need. The Toyota Lexus Minority Owners Dealership Association once again renewed its partnership with The Salvation Army to address the increasing food insecurity challenges families face across the country during the Thanksgiving holiday. Thirty-three (33) dealerships across the nation distributed more than 3,400 food boxes on Saturday, November 18 at participating Toyota/
Lexus dealerships. “As an organization, we are committed to helping those in the communities where we live and do business,” said Jim Colon, president, TLMODA. “TLMODA is excited to participate once again in a Day of Service in partnership with The Salvation Army. The event, which will be held at 33 Toyota and Lexus dealerships across the US, will provide 3,400 boxes of food to address food insecurities for children who depend on federally funded meals during the Thanksgiving school break. Each box contains enough food to feed a family of four for one week. We welcome the opportunity to ensure no child or family in our communities go hungry this holiday season.” During TLMODA’s 4th Day of Service, Toyota dealership staff distributed grocery boxes of non-perishable items like boxes of
cereal and canned goods. Items for the grocery boxes were packed and assembled by local Salvation Army teams in accordance with safety guidelines from local, state, and federal health officials. The Salvation Army is helping identify families in need of food and instructing them to visit one of the participating Toyota dealerships to pick up their grocery box. “The Salvation Army is grateful for the partnership with TLMODA. This is our third year working together to feed our vulnerable neighbors,” said Salvation Army National Commander, Commissioner Kenneth Hodder. “This partnership to distribute food boxes lets our communities know that we care about families in need and we will not let them go hungry.”

Giannoulias Announces LongAwaited Launch of State’s Monarch Butterfly Plate After more than seven years, Illinois residents who placed deposits for the state’s Monarch Butterfly Specialty License Plate can finally redeem it, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced today. The Monarch Butterfly License Plate is the first Universal Specialty Plate issued by the State of Illinois – even though the General Assembly approved it in 2016. “This is an important issue, not just because it will positively impact the environment and preserve the Monarch’s cultural significance, but also because it finally makes good on a long-awaited promise,” Giannoulias said. “Government needs to work more efficiently and deliver for its residents, which means people shouldn’t have to wait seven years to get what they paid for.” “The creation of this special license plate is just one of many ways Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is committed to Monarch conservation,” said IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie, whose agency administers the fund where proceeds from the plate sales are allocated. “Our staff is engaged with other organizations, state agencies, and the general public to build capacity for putting milkweed and other native plants on the landscape to assist not only monarchs, but all of our native pollinators.” In 2016, Illinois lawmakers passed legislation to create a “universal” license plate to limit the number of specialty license plates – all designed differently and deemed problematic for law enforcement. At the time, there were 109 different specialty plates. The legislation stated that any new charitable organization would need at least 2,000 Illinoisans to place deposits that benefitted an organization or charity before any new specialty plate could get issued. Furthermore, the new specialty plates would have a universal, standardized design, but include a decal on the left side depicting the cause or charity it supports. The Monarch plate reached the necessary 2,000 deposits in 2018, yet it was never produced despite residents having already paid the necessary $10 to pre-order the plate. The money raised from Illinoisans’ deposits goes toward protecting the Monarch from extinction. On the campaign trail, Giannoulias heard from residents inquiring about the status of the plate, and he committed to ensuring that those who supported the Monarch’s charity get the opportunity to obtain the plate. “The Monarch Butterfly is meaningful to our state and symbolizes hope and transformation,” said State Representative and Deputy Majority Leader Lisa Hernandez (2nd District-Cicero),
who sponsored the Monarch plate legislation in 2016. “This plate allows Illinoisans to support a meaningful cause and advocate for an endangered species. After years of waiting, Illinoisans can finally show their support for saving the Monarchs.” “The Monarch Butterfly’s habitats need to be preserved, and raising awareness about the importance of this mission is imperative to helping them survive extinction,” said State Senator and Assistant Majority Leader Laura Murphy (28th District-Des Plaines), who sponsored the legislation in the Senate. “The state is finally delivering on its promise to supporters of this important cause. As an important part of Illinois wildlife, raising awareness about efforts to save them for future generations is essential.” “Native pollinators, like the iconic Illinois State Insect, the Monarch Butterfly, play a critical role in preserving the biodiversity of our local ecosystems. The Illinois Environmental Council is proud to have played a role in recruiting over 2,000 Illinois Monarch protectors to sign up for the new license plate decal seven years ago, funding the state’s Monarch Habitat Fund,” said IEC Executive Director Jennifer Walling. “Today, we couldn’t be more appreciative of Secretary of State Giannoulias, his office and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for finally getting this project across the finish line and into the hands of Illinois’ many pollinator protectors.” “The Monarch’s amazing migration journey from Mexico through Illinois has been endangered by climate change, pesticides and habitat loss,” said Sierra Club Chapter Director Jack Darin. “Illinois is a crucial link in saving this part of our natural heritage, and we applaud Secretary Giannoulias for his leadership in cutting through years of red tape to finally give Illinois drivers this option to help with the conservation and recovery of this beautiful species.” The $10 deposits are allocated to the Roadside Monarch Habitat Fund, which is part of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. If renewed, $23 of the universal special license plate renewal fee will benefit the fund. The Monarch Butterfly, Illinois’ state insect, is considered endangered. The fund helps foster habitats to support the butterflies during their twice-yearly migratory journey from Mexico to Chicago with a goal to add 150 million new milkweed stems and other nectar resources to the Illinois landscape in the next 15 years. The Monarch Butterfly plate is available to order at ilsos.gov/monarch or by calling (217) 785-0005.

FSSA (IN) adds second round of Employer-Sponsored Child Care Fund grants INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 17, 2023) — The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning today announced it will extend the Employer-Sponsored Child Care Fund application window and award grants in two rounds. The $25 million fund, part of Gov. Eric J. Holcomb’s 2023 Next Level Agenda, will mobilize employers and communities to create or expand child care offerings that address the needs of working Hoosiers. Round one of applications are due at 11:59 p.m. Nov. 22. Round two of applications will close at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 15. FSSA will target up to 75% of the funds for round one applications with announcements in December of the awarded employers and organizations. Any applications not awarded in the first round, and additional applications received between Nov. 22 and Dec. 15, will be considered for the second round. Those awards, utilizing the remaining funds, will be announced in January. The $25 million program, a partnership with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, uses
a portion of the state’s remaining federal relief funds from the COVID-19 pandemic and is part of the state’s broader efforts to strengthen the early care and education sector, providing support for today’s workforce and investing in tomorrow’s. The program is also supported by the Indiana Manufacturers Association. Grant funding can be used to support employees’ child care needs in a variety of ways, including sponsoring dependent care assistance plans, providing on-site or near-site child care or offering child care tuition benefits. Grants of up to $750,000 will be awarded. The full list of allowable uses and details can be found here. To be eligible, employers must be located in Indiana and either a business or corporation employing 20 or more employees, a group of employers with 20 or more employees or a community-based nonprofit applying on behalf of a group of local employers with a combined total of 20 or more employees. Employers must also be willing to contribute 10% of the total amount requested and be able to implement solutions within the first year of the program.
