Yule love it! Chicago’s Christkindlmarket voted U.S. 7th favorite Christmas tradition.
The holidays are coming, and while we may all end up doing something similar on Christmas Day itself - exchanging gifts, toasting the season with eggnog and eating too much food - it’s a fact that around the country, different states have their very own, diverse festive traditions.
Some traditions might be focused on food, some might involve trees, some might be all about lights, or other types of decoration. But which state has the most popular festive tradition of them all?
Photo book creation company, Mixbook, decided to find out and polled 1,500 Americans to come up with the definitive answer. And - drum roll please - it’s Ohio, with their delicious Buckeyes candy! Shaped to look like the nut which grows on the state tree, known as the buckeye (which the state is nicknamed after), these tasty treats are essentially like a peanut butter cup - but, of course, soooo much better! You’ll see them at every festive party across Ohio, and these bitesize pieces of candy just melt in the mouth.
The Christmas state tradition which came in second was Texas’s, known for the beautiful River Walk in San Antonio.
At Christmas time the area is decorated with over 100,000 lights draped over the cypress trees lining the river, which are illuminated from dusk till dawn. Another of the city’s traditions is watching the caroling boats floating along, filled with groups of
singers merrily singing festive songs.
Chicago’s Christkindlmarket placed in 7th position. Probably the country’s most famous Christmas market, it is styled after the traditional, centuries-old markets of Germany. The market features numerous local artisans selling traditional crafts and trinkets, as well as food and drink, including traditional Christmas drinks such as glühwein (mulled wine) and hot cocoa.
And if you think weird, how about number 39 on the listRhode Island, where the locals on Block Island create a tree made from lobster traps every year! Or the annual Reno Santa Crawl in Nevada, which came in at position 36, where people dress as Santa and go on a massive pub crawl, raising money for charity. We also love the sound of surfing Santas in, where else, California. Making number 8 on the list, athletes enter the contest in Dana Point wearing white beards, red hats and swimsuits, and raise money for Surfers Healing, a surf camp for children with autism.
“For many of us, traditions are an important part of what’s so special about the holiday season. Even though we may celebrate in different ways, spending time with friends and family and creating memories together is what matters most,” said Leslie Albertson, director of marketing of Mixbook.
Bishop Noll Institute Holds First Mass For Feast Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe
The Bishop Noll community celebrated Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Monday, the first time, at least in recent history, this feast was observed at BNI with an all-school Mass.
Dec. 12 marks the anniversary of one of several apparitions of the Virgin Mary witnessed by an indigenous Mexican man named Juan Diego in 1531. Before Mass, Bishop Noll students read the story of Juan Diego in English and Spanish.
This Mass was especially important for BNI Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick and Chaplain Father Jeff Burton, said organizer Ana Acosta Hicks, BNI Spanish teacher.
“They want the large Hispanic community of BNI to be represented, and what better way than through the Virgen de Guadalupe who is venerated by so many,” she said.
The Mass included a rose procession of students from BNI’s three Hispanic clubs – Multicultural Club, Spanish National Honor Society and Hispanic Student Union.
“The rose procession is important, because it represents the miracle of the Virgin’s appearance to Juan Diego,” Acosta Hicks said. Each processing student and some special parent guests presented roses to the statue of the Virgin. Parents who donated the statue had it shipped from Mexico to BNI at a cost of about $3,000.
Dancers from St. Thomas More’s Ballet Folklorico troupe, led by Ms. Gaby Diaz, also performed.
“They too are a new group/addition to St. Thomas More, and we look forward to working with them closely, possibly bringing the ballet to BNI in the future.”
Following Mass, all students received hot chocolate and pan dulce (sweet bread), purchased by BNI’s Campus Ministry.
Many students, parents, clubs and BNI staff members helped bring this special Mass to fruition, including BNI’s Multicultural Club, which aims to highlight the diverse community at the school. BNI musicians, under Mr. Rocco Carioto, worked hard to prepare music for the Mass.
“I hope that we continue this Mass yearly, but that we incorporate many many more people,” Acosta Hicks said.

“God” In the Workplace
MIKE BUDER
Let’s flash back to Christmas Eve 2013. I was enjoying a Christmas celebration for the employees of one of the family-owned companies that I work with. The phone rang and the receptionist picked up the phone. Her intro and outro were pleasant enough, but there was no mention of the Holiday. The owner of the business asked her why. “I don’t want to offend anyone,” she said. “I happen to know that you celebrate Christmas,” he said. “Our family is a Christian family, this is a Christian owned business and we celebrate Christmas. I want you to feel comfortable wishing people a Merry Christmas if you so choose.” It was a courageous statement and one that made me proud to work with this family-owned business. Many people today think that we must be politically correct in our interactions with others, especially in our businesses. If you ask me, it’s pretty sad. We live in a country where men and women have fought for centuries so that we could have the freedom to express our beliefs. In the past century, we’ve seen movements such as that of Martin Luther King, Jr. to ensure that people of all colors and faiths have equal rights. We’ve seen political fights so that people can express their love for whoever they want-whether they be opposite or same sex. In Germany, we fought against the oppression of all these people under Hitler. We’ve fought for the greatest ability to express who we are as individuals…and yet when it comes to our faith or religion, so many people suddenly feel silenced. I am not offended when someone wishes me a Happy
Hanukah, Kwanza or any other holiday that I don’t normally celebrate. I appreciate the fact that some of the things I express about my faith get some people fired up. And that’s ok! The men and women who fought and died for this country did so just as much for your right not to believe as they did for my right to express my belief. I’m not really sure when people’s “feelings” outweighed the rights of other people to talk about faith. I don’t discriminate when it comes to the businesses we work with. I don’t have a problem working with people of all faiths or for that matter no faith. But I personally respect and appreciate business owners who aren’t afraid to talk about God. I believe we find God everywhere we look. He’s in every faith, in every flower, in every interaction and in every child. I don’t preach to my clients and co-workers, but I’m also not afraid to have a conversation about God. How about you? Does God have a role in your workplace in any way, shape, or form? Oh, and by the way – Merry Christmas, and may God bless you and your family!

There are so many different types of Medicare Advantage plans that it is difficult to keep things straight – especially over the phone. I believe it is better to meet with someone face to face and get your questions answered so that you understand what you are getting.

The Book of Ruth in the Bible is a great love story. A God-sized love story. By the end of the book, God has restored the heart and life of the bitter Naomi through the loyal love of Ruth and Boaz. The women of Bethlehem speak words of blessing over her as she beams with her new grandbaby in her arms.
The baby’s name is Obed. He is the legal heir of Naomi’s deceased husband, Elimelech, who will inherit and preserve his family line and real estate in Israel.
The author of our love story pauses and smiles. Generations have passed since this love story unfolded. Israel now enjoys an unprecedented season of shalom, thanks to God’s military and spiritual deliverance through King David.
King David of Bethlehem is a descendant of Ruth and Boaz. They had no idea God would use their loyal love to redeem and restore the entire nation, using a great-grandson named David! When you step out in faith to be a garden hose of God’s love for others, you never know how he will use you.
But even this author had no clue that, a thousand years later, another descendant of Ruth and Boaz would be born in Bethlehem. That night, a heavenly messenger broke the silence over the fields of Bethlehem to announce, “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11, ESV).
Another author, named Matthew, includes Ruth and Boaz in the genealogy of Jesus Christ. Today, we see that, through the loyal love of Ruth and Boaz, God raised up a redeemer for the entire world. “You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21b, ESV).

Passing assets through a trust: What to know
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN
As the year winds down, your thoughts might drift to the future. And, as part of that future, you may be thinking of where your financial assets will end up. You’ve worked hard to accumulate them, and you’ll certainly need some of them to support your retirement, but what about the rest? What’s the best way to pass them on to your loved ones?
There’s no single path for everyone to follow. But you might consider establishing a trust, which offers some key benefits. For example, your estate can avoid the timeconsuming, and highly public, process of probate. Plus, you can be highly specific about how your assets will be distributed.
To establish a trust, you will need to work with a qualified estate-planning attorney. And while you’ll discuss many issues, here are three key questions that will certainly need to be addressed:
Who will serve as trustee of the trust? As the grantor, or creator, of your trust, you will pick the trustee – the individual or corporate entity that will manage the trust’s assets and carry out the purpose of the trust. You could choose a trusted loved one, but this individual might not have the knowledge or experience to manage the responsibilities of a trustee. As an alternative, you could choose a corporate fiduciary, such as a bank or trust company. These entities are typically regulated by outside agencies and provide significant public matter expertise. Of course, they charge for their services and often have account minimums.
When are distributions made? As the grantor, you can choose when assets will be distributed to the beneficiaries you’ve named. You could decide to keep the assets in the trust until a beneficiary reaches the age of majority; note that the age of majority
is not the same in all states. Or you could choose to “phase in” the distributions at particular ages – e.g., 30, 35, 40 – or after a certain number of years. You could even hold assets in the trust for the lifetimes of the beneficiaries. These types of choices will depend on several factors, such as your feelings for how responsible a beneficiary might be in managing money.
For what purposes can the trust assets be used? In addition to choosing when your trust should make distributions, you can decide how these assets should be used. You could designate some broad categories, such as health, education, maintenance and support. A beneficiary’s request for distributions in these areas is usually granted. But you could also structure the trust to provide mandatory income, perhaps once a year, or include a provision that provides incentives, such as distributing certain amounts of money once the beneficiary has achieved a milestone, such as finishing a degree or purchasing a first home.
One final note: Although you clearly have great control over what your trust can accomplish, its effectiveness will also depend, to a great extent, on its asset level. With this in mind, you’ll want to pay close attention to your investment decisions throughout your life and your withdrawal strategy during retirement. The better your choices in these areas, the more options you’ll have with your trust – and the greater the potential benefits for your beneficiaries.

Real Estate Questions & Answers
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS
Question: What is the difference between a house and a home?
Answer: How many times have you thought about all the places you have lived over your lifetime? Christmas at home with your parents when you were allowed to open one present before Christmas eve dinner and the excitement that brought? You remember the living room with the tree you decorated with your parents, which looked so warm and festive in that cozy room. The memory of that home is still special to you today.
Maybe it was that attic apartment above the corner grocery store, where every time the milk cooler door closed, you could hear it loud and clear.
How about your first home where the Kitchen was so small that you and your spouse took turns when you needed to enter it?
So many memories that put a smile on your face. That’s why memories are so special. Whether it’s remembering a loved one that has passed or the memory of living in a home that brought back happy feelings of an earlier part of your life.
Those special memories of our past are part of the process for keeping us happy. Although, we should never live in the past, it will always be a part of who we are.
Maybe driving past a previous home and remembering when your daughter fell off the
bike on that driveway, skinning her knee and wanting a hug from you so the hurt would go away.
The basketball hoop on your garage where you taught your son or daughter to do layups. Remembering the home where you read, “Twas the night before Christmas” to your children and that priceless look in their eyes.
It’s really not the act that you remember, it’s the feeling of that moment that you will never forget.
So, when you are at your home with those special people in your life, drinking your spiced coffee and hot chocolate, turn off that TV and talk about those special moments in your life that are etched in your mind. I guarantee there will be laughs and some happy tears!
This is what makes a house, a home. After all, Tis the season to remember, that we’re never far from home.
Happy Holidays!
