Music to Power Your Workout

Enjoy stereo-quality sound wherever your workout takes you with a state-of-the-art smartphone like the Motorola Edge+ Gen 2, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Mobile Platform. Giving you up to two full days of power, lightning-fast speeds and proquality features for doing more of what you love, this smartphone can provide music that motivates you regardless of your exercise style. When it’s time to rest and recover, you can enjoy days of entertainment on a beautiful display that wraps around the edges.

Sound to Motivate More Movement

An energizing workout requires a soundtrack to get you pumped up and moving. Enhance your listening experience with LG Tone Free T90 wireless earbuds, which feature Dolby Head Tracking and Snapdragon Sound. These earbuds identify the location of sound as you turn your head, recalibrating to enable a more natural sound experience so you’re always in the center of the scene. The speaker driver is made of a strong, lightweight material that delivers better overall audio clarity and reduced vibration so you can hear every sound come alive. Exceptional audio combines with superior connectivity for music, movies, crystal-clear voice calls, gaming and a low latency fit for aptX Adaptive compatible devices.

A Smart Workout Buddy

If you’re always on the go, a powerful smartphone is a smart way to get in a streamlined workout. An option like the OnePlus 10T 5G delivers on multiple levels. Driven by the powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform, this is a phone built to evolve beyond speed. It has Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 for premium Wi-Fi connectivity and a Kryo CPU for unbeatable performance, ideal for multitaskers and power users. The charging system delivers a day’s power in 10 minutes. What’s more, the antenna system, featuring a total of 15 antennas, provides a

360-degree closed-loop system to avoid blind signal angles, while simple and textured visuals help you focus and move seamlessly between work, rest and play.

Play Your Way to Fitness

If your workout regimen needs an infusion of playful fun, the Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset may be just the ticket. This VR headset is your ticket to the metaverse (and so much more), whether you’re working out, gaming, meeting up with friends or going on a virtual field trip. Industry-leading graphics and immersive audio put you in the middle of the action. The portable device is ideal for workouts on the go, and you’ll find a wide range of apps that let you work out amid stunning scenery, compete against friends and participate in challenges. The immersive experiences break up the monotony of a boring, basic workout, making exercise fun and playful.

Wellness You Can Watch

Powered by the Snapdragon 4100+ Wear Platform, the Fossil 6 Wellness Edition watch provides the speed, power and performance you need to efficiently track your health, all with extended battery life, Bluetooth 5.0 LE connectivity, rapid charging and more features to elevate your experience. The watch detects movement and starts a workout for you. In addition, not only does it allow you to monitor how hard your heart is working and provide estimated blood oxygen measurements so you can see how well your body is circulating oxygen, but it also measures your cardiorespiratory fitness, allowing you to track the amount of oxygen your body utilizes during exercise. In addition to keeping tabs on your active hours, the watch also helps you understand more about your sleep habits, including sleep quality and history, restfulness and progress against sleep goals.

Track Your Progress

Setting fitness goals starts with a plan and achieving them requires strong work ethic and, just as importantly, the ability to track progress so you can enjoy the success. The ultimate expression of ultra-portability and versatility, the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook is powered by the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 Compute Platform. Slim and sleek, this 2-in-1 features a detachable keyboard to transform from a tablet to a laptop so you can keep an eye on your fitness goals whether you’re working out at home or on the go, and 15 hours of battery life means you can enjoy usage from day to night.

Sand Ridge Audubon Society News

The Sand Ridge Audubon Society announces the National Annual Christmas Bird Count: The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual census of birds in the Western Hemisphere, performed in the early winter by volunteer birdwatchers and administered by the National Audubon Society. The purpose is to provide population data for use in science, especially conservation biology. The CBC is the longest running citizen science survey in the world.

Our own Calumet City/Sand Ridge Audubon Society

Christmas Bird Count takes place on Saturday, December 31, 2022. If interested, contact lead compiler: John Elliott 708386-4909 or johnelliott4@gmail.com (55 Years of Counting—a Banner Achievement!) You will be part of not only local history, but a great tradition that began in the early days of the American conservation movement. This will be the 122st year for the National Audubon bird count. All Christmas Bird Counts are conducted between December 14 to January 5 each year. You can join as many counts as you wish!

The next meeting of the Society will be on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 7 pm. Our speaker for the evening will be Grace Kruse, who works with the National Park Service and travelled to Iceland recently; she’ll show a slide presentation from her fascinating trip.

February 7th program will be presented by Rex Burns who installed solar panels last year on his and Mrs. Burris’ home. Rex will talk about costs of going solar, savings, and how others can take advantage of solar energy.

March 3- Michael Boos, who heads up the Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative, will talk about Wolf Lake and the bird populations there at Wm. Powers State Recreation Area. He has authored three books: “Naked! One of 13,” “Over the Line,”

and “Where’s Mike?” Mike will tell about a film being produced chronicling the history and significance of Wolf Lake and its environs.

April 14- (Note date change for April meeting) ) Lansing author Carrie Steinweg will be talking about some of her numerous books, giving them a local twist. Carrie is a freelance writer, photographer, author, and food and travel blogger who has lived in Lansing for 27 years. She most enjoys writing about food, people, history, and baseball.

May 5th - Alex Ross, author of the local Nature Book, “Between Home and the Highland Rookery,” will be our speaker. Alex is an amateur Nature Photographer and Graphic Designer who captures the natural beauty that can be found in the region. The first printing of his fascinating book is selling out quickly!

Every year in June, we end our meeting year with a picnic and a program featuring photographs taken by members. Now is the time to start adding new pictures to your collection. Get out your phone or camera or even your video cam, and record what you see in the nature around you that is remarkable, beautiful, or just plain odd. Have you visited a natural area that is off the beaten path? Seen some particularly lovely fall colors, sunsets, spring flowers, birds at your feeders… record them and share with the rest of us. Make notes about where and when you saw something.

2022 SRAS Meetings at Sand Ridge Nature Center: 1st Fridays at 7pm; September thru June (unless that day falls on a holiday weekend, in which case it moves to the next week). Please note the April Meeting will be on Friday April 14 due to the observance of Good Friday.

New Year-New Agent?

Meet the new agent…same as the old agent…of course this is a play on “meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” What I am addressing here is that many people think changing real estate agents will help a listing that is not getting sold in today’s market. They think one agent is as good as another, so if one doesn’t “perform” then we just move onto the next. Commoditization of the work force seems to be the order of the day – so it is somewhat natural that buyers and sellers would treat real estate agents the same way.

Sometimes change can be a good thing. If your agent isn’t doing a good job marketing your home, bringing in a new agent may be the answer. But in other cases, and perhaps more often than not it will make little to no difference in the final outcome. One dirty little secret of real estate is that an agent has a very limited ability to influence the final sale price. Agents can help you get the most that the market will allow…but beyond that they are at the mercy of market forces. The notion that a real estate agent can beat the bushes and pull out the ONE buyer willing to pay and finance a premium for your home because of its special features is stuff of urban legend. Look at it this way: If Ford automobiles were to go down in price by 10%, could a Ford dealer realistically be

expected to move their existing inventory for their original price? The answer is plainly no. And although there are no two houses identical, the ability of the agent to defy market forces is simply not there. You actually have to sell your house 3 times. Once the buyer says “yes” the home still has to pass muster with the inspector as well as the bank appraiser. So even if you find a buyer willing to pay $200,000 on a $180,000 value, there are several more “decision makers” in the mix that can kill the deal…and these decision makers are not buying with their hearts-for them it’s all about the bottom line. So unless you find a cash buyer the home will have to pass muster with the bank. The banks will not fund a loan if the home is overpriced. Holding out for that higher price, will get you less in the end. Re-listing with another agent under these conditions will accomplish nothing.

New Year’s is a mile marker on life’s highway.

Mile markers measure our progress in miles, but we find them at random, insignificant spots on the highway, not by exit ramps, landmarks, or rest areas.

New Year’s Day is similar. It’s an arbitrary day on a calendar that proclaims January 1 the start of a new year. The significant moments of our lives rarely land on this day. However, it can be helpful to use this mile marker to reflect on the road traveled in 2022 and to consider the journey in 2023.

First, we do well to look back on the significant events of 2022: how they impacted us, how we experienced God’s presence in them, and what we can learn from them. This encourages us to remember, grieve, celebrate, learn, and give thanks, as appropriate.

Second, consider the road ahead. We know not what adventures or hardships await. Let’s entrust ourselves and the miles ahead into the hand of our Father in heaven. We need to keep him front and center in our hearts and plans. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Some of us may leave the highway before the next mile marker. Let’s pray with the psalmist “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12, NIV84).

Finally, it is an opportunity for all who have surrendered their lives to Christ’s care and control to remember and believe that “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever” (Psalm 23:6, ESV).

Time for New Year’s financial resolutions

It’s that time of year when many of us promise ourselves we’ll go to the gym more, or learn a new language, or take up a musical instrument, or any number of other worthy goals. But this year, when making New Year’s resolutions, why not also consider some financial ones?

Here are a few to consider:

• Don’t let inflation derail your investment strategy. As you know, inflation was the big financial story of 2022, hitting a 40-year high. And while it may moderate somewhat this year, it will likely still be higher than what we experienced the past decade or so. Even so, it’s a good idea to try not to let today’s inflation harm your investment strategy for the future. That happened last year: More than half of American workers either reduced their contributions to their 401(k)s and other retirement plans or stopped contributing completely during the third quarter of 2022, according to a survey by Allianz Life Insurance of North America. Of course, focusing on your cash flow needs today is certainly understandable, but are there other ways you can free up some money, such as possibly lowering your spending, so you can continue contributing to your retirement accounts? It’s worth the effort because you could spend two or three decades as a retiree.

• Control your debts. Inflation can also be a factor in debt management. For example, your credit card debt could rise due to rising prices and variable credit card interest rate increases. By paying your bill each month, you can avoid the effects of rising interest rates. If you do carry a balance, you might be able to transfer it to a lower-rate card,

depending on your credit score. And if you’re carrying multiple credit cards, you might benefit by getting a fixed-rate debt consolidation loan. In any case, the lower your debt payments, the more you can invest for your long-term goals.

• Review your investment portfolio. At least once a year, you should review your investment portfolio to determine if it’s still appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. But be careful not to make changes just because you feel your recent performance is not what it should have been. When the financial markets are down, as was the case for most of 2022, even quality investments, such as stocks of companies with solid business fundamentals and strong prospects, can see declines in value. But if these investments are still suitable for your portfolio, you may want to keep them.

• Prepare for the unexpected. If you encountered a large unexpected expense, such as the need for a major home repair, how would you pay for it? If you didn’t have the money readily available, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments or retirement accounts. To prevent this, you should build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses — or a year’s worth, if you’re retired — with the money kept in a low-risk, liquid account. These resolutions can be useful — so try to put them to work in 2023.

On

21, 2022,

I was impressed with your letter. You do an extremely good job of keeping track of your bills – much more than most people.

Unfortunately, the system does not work the way you think it does. Your insurance company will NOT pay the bills you sent me because Medicare ruled that the balances are part of your Medicare Part B deductible for the year. The company has no obligation to pay a bill when Medicare rules that.

When a claim is filed with Medicare, Medicare rules on it and calculates what is applied to the deductible. A doctor who serves you earlier in the year but files the claim after other medical services file will have the claim pushed back in order of consideration.

You are supposed to get a Medicare Summary Notice every three months which shows what has been filed and the rulings. Those rulings control everything. It may be

that you paid on a claim that your insurance would or should have paid. But without the Medicare Summary notice and the date of service, I have no way of helping you.

You gave me four bills to check. But one had an incomplete date (?/26/22), so I could not check it. On the other three, Medicare ruled the balances were Part B deductibles.

You can call Medicare at 800-633-4227 to give specific dates of service and ask what the ruling was on each claim. It is time consuming. You can call your insurance company to review claims date by date for how Medicare ruled and how your company paid. If you paid a bill that the insurance should have paid, get and send a copy of the page of the Medicare Summary Notice that shows the ruling and proof that you paid it and ask your insurance company to reimburse you.

ZAJESKI JR.

Daniel Myron Zajeski Jr., of South Holland, IL passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2022. Dan was born on January 29, 1945 in the Roseland/West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, IL. His parents moved the family to South Holland, IL, in approximately 1957. His late parents were Daniel M. Zajeski Sr. and Jessie Zajeski (NEE:Hibma).

Dan was the oldest of four children: Timothy (Nancy), Patricia Anania, and David (deceased). Dan Zajeski attended Assumption BVM elementary school, and then Mendel CHS (1959-1963) in Chicago. At Mendel, he was inducted into the Honor Society, and played varsity baseball. One of his biggest thrills was playing on the 1963 Catholic League championship team at Comiskey Park. He then went on to play baseball with the minor league Markham Cardinals, once pitching a no-hitter. After graduating high school in 1963, Dan Zajeski attended the Illinois Institute of Technology (IT) in Chicago, majoring in Psychology. While at IT, he joined the Air Force ROTC program, serving as an Air Force reservist for two years, and receiving an Expert Marksmanship ribbon, In 1968 he switched and enlisted into the US Army. Dan served on active duty for three years, from 1968 to 1971, as a Counterintelligence Special Agent and as a Spanish Linguist with US Army Intelligence. While on active duty, he served at various posts in the US, and spent two years at Fort Amador in the Panama Canal Zone. Among his military awards, Dan received the Army Commendation Medal for exemplary service while on active duty during a time of war. In 1967, Dan Zajeski married Andre Marie Heinemann, who had attended Mercy High School in Chicago, and whom he had dated for six years. After marrying, they bought a home in South Holland, IL, on Park Lane, and resided there until 1976. In 1976 they purchased a home on Thornwood Drive, also in South Holland. After Basic Military Training, Dan was accompanied by Andre at all of his assigned Army posts. Two children were subsequently born to the Zajeski’s, Crystal M. Zajeski (Kinder) and Daniel A. Zajeski, who, all together, presented Dan and Andre with four grandchildren: Tayler, Katelyn, Elle, and Bryce. Upon his Honorable Discharge from active duty in 1971, Dan joined the South Holland Police Department (SHPD) as a police officer recruit. While at the University of Illinois’ Police Training Academy, Dan received the Police Training Institute’s (PT) highest award, the Ervin H. Warren Award, as the top recruit in his class. Dan went on to serve 31 years as a fulltime SHIPD police officer, rising through the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Deputy Chief, and finally to Chief of Police. During his police career, he also served 15 years as a certified Police-Paramedic, rising to the position of Paramedic Coordinator. He retired from fulltime

police service in 2002, but stayed on as a part-time Village Deputy Marshal until age 65, which was mandatory police officer retirement age. Dan went back to college after joining the SHPD, and received an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from Thornton Community College (now South Suburban College) in South Holland, then earned his Bachelor’s Degree in the Administration of Criminal Justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He subsequently received his Masters Degree in Corrections/ Social Justice from Chicago State University. He was also a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy at Quantico, VA, the Defense Language Institute (Spanish), Presidio of Monterey, CA, and the US Army Counterintelligence Course, Ft. Holabird, MD. In 1983, Dan rejoined the US Army as a reservist. He served as a Counterintelligence Special Agent, a Spanish Linguist, and as a First Sergeant (E-8) -- initially with the 138th Military Intelligence Battalion at O’Hare AFB, Chicago, IL. He then finished up his military career as a Senior Military Intelligence Instructor and as a Basic Spanish soldier, he received various military awards, including Army Commendation and Army Achievement Medals. At the culmination of his distinguished 27-years of military service, MSG Zajeski was being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He was honorably retired from the US Army Reserve in 2005, at the mandatory retirement age of 60. During Dan’s career as a police supervisor and Army reservist, he also taught Criminal Justice (CJS) and Basic Spanish courses at South Suburban College (SSC) in South Holland, as an Adjunct (part-time) Instructor, beginning in 1975. Shortly after his retirement as Chief of Police, he was hired as a full-time CIS Instructor at SSC. In 2010, he retired from fulltime teaching at SSC, and went back to Adjunct Instructor status at SSC until 2014 when he retired completely. Dan Zajeski enjoyed: running; working out; walking his dog; reading science fiction and military books; reading the daily newspapers; going to the movies with his wife; and spending time at his family’s vacation home in the Wisconsin Dells area. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until time of the funeral service at 8:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 649 E. 162nd St, South Holland, IL. Asexual reproduction is common for animals like starfish, deepsea worms, and stick insects, but among vertebrates, it’s a rarity. A process called parthenogenesis allows some female animals to fertilize an egg with their own genetic material, producing offspring by “virgin birth.” Scientists have assumed that vertebrates that usually reproduce sexually turn to parthenogenesis as a “hail Mary pass,” a last-ditch effort at reproduction when there aren’t enough mates to go around. However, a recent study revealed an example of a female zebra shark in an aquarium reproducing via parthenogenesis, even though there were healthy, reproductive males in the same enclosure. This finding has implications for not only the continued care of zebra sharks in zoos and aquariums, but also for conservation efforts focused on their wild counterparts.

“We’ve known for several years that parthenogenesis occurs in animals like sharks, but some aspects of it remain unknown, like why it occurs and what triggers it,” says Kevin Feldhim, a researcher at Chicago’s Field Museum and the study’s corresponding author. “This latest paper is just another step in learning why these ‘virgin births’ happen.”

The study, published in the Journal of Fish Biology, focuses on endangered zebra sharks at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

“As we started to see successful breeding of zebra sharks at Shedd in 2004, we also began genetic testing to confirm which of the sharks were the parents of the offspring,” says Lise Watson, assistant director of animal operations and habitats at Shedd Aquarium and an author of the study. “By confirming the lineage of the offspring, we could more soundly make decisions on future breeding efforts to maintain maximum genetic diversity while supporting the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Species Survival Plan for zebra sharks.”

Shedd’s Wild Reef exhibition includes a massive floor-to-ceiling habitat containing a variety of sharks, including zebra sharks. In 2008, Watson and her colleagues noticed a clutch of eggs; they moved them to a nursery behind the scenes to safely hatch. When the shark pups hatched, Jean Dubach of Loyola University analyzed the sharks’ DNA to determine their parentage. The results seemed impossible.

“These pups didn’t match any of the mature males that were in the enclosure. But they did match the female that laid the eggs,” says Feldheim.

In addition to having genetic markers in common with their

mother but none of the potential fathers, the pups had identical homozygous copies of some alleles. Think back to the genetics unit in your high school biology class. You probably made Punnett square grids with different gene types represented by upper and lowercase letters, like B as the dominant allele for brown eyes and b as the recessive allele for blue eyes. You get one allele from each parent, and if they’re the same (BB or bb), that’s called homozygous.

The genetic markers used in these sharks are more complicated than just B versus b--they have many more alleles, to the point that it’s virtually impossible that they’d show up exactly the same way in two different individuals. So when the shark pups DNA results came back homozygous, that meant that they had to be getting both of those DNA strands from their mother, rather than from two different parents.

“Discovering these pups were parthenotes was quite a surprise for the team at Shedd, given our previous success in encouraging breeding through sexual reproduction,” says Watson.” This news underscored exactly why regular, ongoing genetic testing of offspring is important.”

Pups born by this type of “virgin birth” unfortunately tend to have a short life expectancy, as they’re likelier to have rare recessive genetic conditions. The shark pups in this study only survived a few months. But the fact that they were born at all challenges long-standing ideas in biology.

“This is only the second case that we know of where sharks have been born by parthenogenesis even when there were healthy mates available,” says Feldheim; the other instance was at the Aquarium of Pacific. “This discovery throws a wrench in what we thought we knew about how and why parthenogenesis happens, and it illustrates a key aspect of science: we’re continually learning.”

“This study is just the beginning of our understanding of the occurrence of this genetic phenomenon in zebra sharks,” says Watson. “Zoos and aquariums like Shedd have a key role to play in the conservation of species like zebra sharks, which are nearly extinct in some parts of the world. Knowing more about parthenogenesis and confirming the genetic makeup of our populations in zoos and aquaria is crucial to making informed decisions that fuel this work.”
