NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER DAY JANUARY 24TH Mrvan Announces Winners of 2023 Congressional App Challenge from Hanover Central Middle School Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Frank J. Mrvan announced Mason Burdan and Joshua Mola of Hanover Central Middle School are the winning team of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Indiana’s First Congressional District. Mason and Joshua used JavaScript to create their winning application, “The Dark Forest.” Their application is a game designed for players to collect points under time restrictions while facing obstacles. Congressman Mrvan stated, “Thank you to all of the outstanding students who showcased their tremendous talents in the Congressional App Challenge, and congratulations to Joshua and Mason from Hanover Central Middle School for their recognition and exceptional achievement. It is deeply encouraging to see such technological innovation and creativity in the youth of our region, and I thank all of the schools and teachers for their daily dedication to fostering and encouraging these skills.” Mason Burdan stated, “I wanted to make a horror game for a while, as I really like to draw monsters and other creatures. I used my inspiration from ‘survive the night’ style games to put my own creative spin on things. I plan to use my coding and computer skills to become an architect and design houses.” Joshua Mola stated, “I plan to use my coding skills to get a job in the computer coding industry, and to also continue to make games.” Suzanne Demmond, Computer Science Teacher at Hanover Central Middle School stated, “STEM is so vital to education because it helps prepare students for adulthood, the workplace and society. Problem solving, working with technology and working with others is a broad example of what STEM really boils down to. If we want our youth to have a chance at becoming successful adults, STEM is the path they need and deserve.” Thomas Martin, Principal of Hanover Central Middle School stated, “I am extremely proud of Josh and Mason. They are the true definition of a team. I love the way Mason explained, with pride, how he was the creative force of the project but was also very quick to give Josh all the credit for the technical end and complimented his coding skills. Josh spoke in the same way about how he did the coding while giving Mason the credit for the storyline. Both of them are very deserving of this award.” Mary Tracy-MacAulay, Superintendent of Hanover Central School Corporation stated, “It’s wonderful to have Mason and Josh recognized for such an amazing accomplishment that embodies

creativity and technology. They are great young men, and it will be wonderful to watch what the future holds for them both. It’s always a joy to see our kids succeed!” Aco Sikoski, Chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College Valparaiso Campus and Judge of the Congressional App Challenge stated, “It was an honor and privilege for me to serve as the judge for the 2023 Congressional App Challenge. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Joshua and Mason for winning this year’s completion. They did outstanding work. I would also like to express my gratitude to Congressman Mrvan for his encouragement and promotion of education through STEM.” A demonstration video of the “The Dark Forest” app can be viewed here. “The Dark Forest” will be part of a rotating display in the U.S. Capitol. The app will also be featured on the House.gov website for one year, and the Congressional App Challenge will also highlight the app on its website. 118 students across Indiana’s First Congressional District participated in the 2023 Congressional App Challenge. The Congressional App Challenge is an annual nationwide academic competition for Middle School (6th – 8th grades) and High School (9th – 12th grades) students to create and exhibit their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

Illinois Ranks as No. 1 Soy, No. 2 Corn Producing State for 2023 By DANIEL GRANT FarmWeek Illinois once again produced some of the largest crops of any state in the nation despite drought and other weather challenges last year, according to USDA’s crop production report released Jan. 12. Prairie State farmers produced 648 million bushels of soybeans in 2023 (down from 2022 but the most of any state nationwide) and 2.27 billion bushels of corn (up slightly from the previous year and the second-most nationwide behind Iowa). Statewide, yields averaged 206 bushels per acre for corn in 2023 (up 3 bushels from the November estimate but down 8 bushels from the 2022 record) and 63 bushels for beans (up 2 bushels from November and even with last year). The trend of higher-than-expected yields was also evident nationwide in USDA’s annual crop summary. U.S. corn production was pegged at 15.3 billion bushels last year with an average yield of 177.3 bushels per acre, both records. Soybean production totaled 4.16 billion bushels last year (down 2% from 2022) with an average yield of 50.6 bushels (up 1% from the previous year).

“It’s a bearish one this year, at least from the reaction so far,” Joe Camp, of CommStock Investments, told the RFD Radio Network after the release of the report. “I think it was triggered first off by these higher yield estimates.” USDA raised corn yield estimates from its previous report by 9 bushels in Nebraska, 4 bushels in Minnesota and 1 bushel in Iowa, along with the boost in Illinois. Iowa finished with a final corn yield estimate of 203 bushels per acre while Indiana was right behind at 201 bushels. “Those are big states that really add extra production,” Camp said. “It’s hard to reconcile after the year we had. “No doubt this crop ended up better than we feared it was going to be,” he continued. “Still, to see states like Iowa be ahead of where they were a year ago is hard to put together.” Futures prices for corn, soybeans and wheat all closed the week on a down note following the release of the report. “It can be a relief this report is out of the way, with an outlook toward higher seasonal prices normally leading us into spring,” Camp said. “But there’s nothing really friendly to talk about on this crop report.” As for crop inventory, USDA pegged stocks in all positions

www.dannysellssoho.com as of Dec. 1 at 12.2 billion bushels of corn (up 13% from the previous year), 3 billion bushels of beans (down 1%) and 1.41 billion bushels of wheat (up 8%). USDA also released its winter wheat seedings report on Jan. 12. It pegged all winter wheat plantings for the 2024 crop at 34.4 million acres, down 6% from the previous year. Seedings of soft red winter wheat totaled 6.86 million acres, down 13% from 2023. But Illinois farmers bucked that trend and planted 860,000 acres of winter wheat last fall, up 2% from the previous year and up significantly from 650,000 acres in 2022, USDA reported. SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN You may have read reports about an impending “debt crisis” in the U.S. Should you be worried about investing in Treasury securities? Part of the concern over debt has been driven by the cost of government borrowing, which has risen because of higher interest rates. But it’s worth noting that while interest expenses have risen to nearly 2% of gross domestic product (GDP), this measure had exceeded 3% in the early 1990s. So, while the upward trend of federal debt could prove problematic down the road, the claims of a current crisis may be overblown. And Treasury securities are still considered among the safest investments in the world, as they are secured by the full faith and credit — that is, the ability to borrow and tax — of the United States. In any case, if you haven’t invested in Treasury securities, you’ll want to know the basics. First of all, when you purchase a Treasury security, you’re lending money to the federal government for a specific period of time. Here are your purchase options: • Treasury bill – Typically matures in four, 13 or 26 weeks, although some have maturities of up to a year. • Treasury note – Matures between one and 10 years. • Treasury bond – Typically matures in 10 to 30 years. When you buy Treasury notes or bonds, you receive semiannual interest payments, but when you purchase a Treasury bill — a T-bill — you generally buy it a discount, and when the bill matures, you receive its face value. So, for instance, you might pay $4,700 for a 13-week T-bill and get $5,000 back at the end of the three months. When investing in Treasury securities, you’ll want to keep these features in mind: • Price fluctuation – While your interest payments will always remain the same,

the market value of your Treasury security can change. So, you might not get face value for a Treasury bond if you sell it before it matures, particularly if market interest rates are higher than the rate you’ve been receiving. Because longer-term bonds have more payments left to make than shorter-term ones, they are more sensitive to interest rate changes and market price fluctuations. • Taxes – Interest income from Treasury securities is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local taxes. In addition to the traditional Treasury bonds, bills and notes, another option is available: Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS). Unlike other Treasury securities, in which the principal is fixed, the principal of a TIPS can move up or down, based on movements in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Consumers (CPI-U). Once your TIPS matures, if the principal is higher than the original amount, you’ll get the increased amount; if the principal is equal to or less than the original amount, you’ll get the original amount. TIPS pay a fixed interest rate semiannually until maturity, but because interest is paid on the adjusted principal, the amount of your interest payments can vary. As with other Treasury securities, you can hold a TIPS until maturity or sell it before it matures. Don’t let scary or gloomy predictions discourage you from considering Treasuries — they remain a good option as part of the fixed-income portion of your investment portfolio. The Necessity of Growth

Read The Shopper Online! Visit issuu.com/myshopper

by Janice R Newman Growing a little is growing a lot. Every bit of growth counts. In a changing world, it’s a necessity to change and grow to prevent stagnation and to live a fulfilled life. If you don’t grow, then you stay the same. Growth is a natural and continuous process of development and change that occurs throughout a person’s life from day one. We are growing and forming in our physical being. But growing isn’t just about getting taller or older; it’s about being stronger, smarter, kinder, and closer to the heart of what makes us who we are. Your life is a story that is continuously being written. You’re developing an exciting adventure story, but it takes growth to change the storyline and to develop the main character: YOU. Every page of your life story contains experiences that contribute to molding you into a unique individual. Personal growth involves intentional efforts to improve oneself. On the contrary, choosing not to grow might lead to stagnation, a lack of progress, missed opportunities, and limiting one’s full potential. Growth involves positive changes and progress in various aspects of an individual’s life, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Physical Growth is the most common aspect. It involves working at gaining strength, acquiring physical skills, and maintaining a healthy body. A healthy body is necessary for a thriving life. As we age, it’s important to learn how to adapt to our growing but aging bodies while adjusting appropriately to take care of our bodies and well-being. We grow in knowledge of how to take care of the changes in our health which can vary from how we exercise, food consumed, and sleeping habits. These factors change as we grow older. Mental Growth is the expansion of knowledge, critical thinking skills, and intellectual capabilities. Learning new skills and gaining more information adds to critical thinking skills to provide a fresh perspective on life. Engaging in current events discussions, reading books on diverse topics, learning about

different cultures, starting a new hobby, solving puzzles, and exploring the world around you can increase your cognitive abilities by developing a deeper understanding of life. Emotional Growth focuses on the development of character, self-awareness, and the ability to manage and express emotions healthily. Developing your character and emotional stability enhances resilience, fosters empathy, builds integrity, increases kindness, and demonstrates humility. Galatians 5:22-23 NIV emphasizes what a well-rounded character should be “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against things like this.” It’s a necessity to continuously develop these characteristics as they increase our emotional well-being. Spiritual Growth focuses on developing our faith and belief in God and Jesus Christ. Growth is fostered through prayer, meditating on the Word, and loving others. It’s a special journey exploring our beliefs, values, and faith to connect spiritually with God. The more we discover the richness of our beliefs, it will guide us in how we live each day. Living out values, like kindness and compassion, also shows spiritual growth. Setting aside time daily for prayer, talking with God, and reading the Bible can provide a sense of spiritual grounding and guidance. Growth is not only about physical changes but also about evolving into a more wellrounded mature individual. It plays a crucial role in developing character, achieving goals, and living a fulfilled life aligned with values, beliefs, and fruits of the Spirit. Ephesians 4:15 NCV “No! Speaking the truth with love, we will grow up in every way into Christ, who is the head.” Embracing growth involves a willingness to learn, adapt, expand your knowledge, and the desire to improve. We could stay the same, but it would hinder our growth during our journey of self-discovery into a positive new you. Y! Why Not! www.facebook.com/ywhynotshow/

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA Perhaps we’re too hard on “Doubting Thomas.” Thomas was one of Jesus’ disciples, and, upon hearing of Jesus’ resurrection, insisted on seeing and touching Jesus before he would believe He was alive. Yes, Thomas should have believed in the first place, but that sin should not define him. Jesus’ response to Thomas’ doubt is recorded in John 20:24-29. Jesus tells Thomas to touch his hands and feel his pierced side, exactly what Thomas said he needed to believe. Jesus doesn’t curse Thomas for his doubt — he responds with specific assurance! Jesus doesn’t define Thomas by his doubt, and He doesn’t define you by your doubt either. Far too often, Christians equate doubt with unbelief. But they’re not the same. Doubt says “I have questions.” Unbelief says, “I know all the answers.” Doubt says, “I’m open to discovering more about God.” Unbelief says, “I’m closing myself off to God.” Doubt can be God’s way to refine you, to bring you to a fuller understanding of Himself. 19th Century poet Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote a poem called “Doubt and Faith” telling the story of a man who challenges the notion that doubt is “Devil-born.” Some of the poem is included below. May it bless you address your own doubt in a healthy way: Perplext in faith, but pure in deeds, At last he beat his music out. There lives more faith in honest doubt, Believe me, than in half the creeds. He fought his doubts and gathered strength, He would not make his judgment blind, He faced the spectres of the mind And laid them: thus he came at length To find a stronger faith his own; And Power was with him in the night, Which makes the darkness and the light, And dwells not in the light alone. Question: We are selling our home to a friend. Our sale is being held up by our buyers loan. The Pre-qualification said they would be granted a loan. Now, the lender says we won’t be able to close on the original date. Can you answer why this is happening? Answer: This is why you need to sell with a Realtor. They have the experience to help you. A prequalification is just a basic check of the buyers credit score. The buyer tells the lender what their income and debts are. The lender uses this information to show they are prequalified based on the current information. This is not verified until after they start the PRE-APPROVAL. The lender will give you limited information due to privacy laws. These laws are too strict, because the seller is also involved and they have to make plans to move. Most lenders don’t care about the seller, just their client who they are working for and being paid by. Realtors can usually

ask the right questions and the lenders will usually give them answers. Since you do not have a Realtor, ask your attorney to contact the lender and get the necessary information. Most real estate contracts are contingent on the home inspection results, appraisal value and the buyer being approved for their loan. It states this in your contract. In our opinion, it appears the lender for your buyer has found something about the buyer that may affect their loan approval. He is trying to work it out with the buyer. Again, your attorney should contact the buyers lender. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? Orland Park Il. January16. Illegal immigration, government intrigue and constitutional interpretation are as timely as today’s headlines. And they are the core of Orland Park writer Frank Victoria’s awardwinning novel The Founders’ Plot. The storyline involves the newly-elected California governor, Michael J. DiGrasso, who pushes through a tough immigration law that’s declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. But the decorated Afghan War veteran ignores the ruling, igniting a clash between federal, state, and judicial power. And leaves the governor’s longtime friend, President Martin W. Ballard, to decide whether to nationalize the state’s National Guard to enforce the court’s ruling. Battling the governor is Senate Minority Leader Elizabeth Stern, a cunning member of the opposition party. She’ll go to any lengths to force DiGrasso to obey the Court decision. She plots an impeachment and even blackmails the governor over an affair he had years earlier. As these forces clash, tragedy befalls two Mexican families in the country illegally. Carlos and Marisol Castellano and their friends Julio and Carmella Perez struggle to survive in the hypertensive environment created by DiGrasso’s immigration law. Victoria weaves a multitude of events around

that narrative. “There’s all kinds of good stuff,” he says, “extramarital affairs, bloody fights, blackmail, killings, family strife, an assassination attempt, suicide. You name it. “And there’s plenty of historical and legal information presented. I like books, even fiction, from which I learn something, and I think many other people feel the same.” It took Victoria years to write the novel, but it was a dream come true. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. But there were times when I thought I’d never finish it. I was forever editing and rewriting and reorganizing. It was a long process and what started as a labor of love became just plain labor.” Victoria will soon be publishing three novellas, two Fantasies and a Romantic Comedy. He’d welcome an interview for an article about the book and/or a review in your newspaper. About the author: Frank Victoria grew up in Chicago and now lives in Orland Park. He served in the Marine Corps and holds a B.A. in Journalism. He was a professional business writer and editor for more than twenty years before making a career change into education where he taught American history and government for sixteen years in the Chicago Public Schools.

BBB Tip: How to Choose a Tax Preparer By Rick Walz - President/CEO BBB Serving Northern Indiana It is time again to file our taxes. For many people, major life changes, business ownership, or simply a lack of knowledge about the ever-changing tax laws make finding a trustworthy tax preparer a good idea. That said, not all tax preparers have the same level of experience and training. Here are tips for finding someone you can trust with your finances and sensitive personal information. Which type of tax preparer is right for you? First, it’s important to understand the different types of tax preparers and their qualifications. Only enrolled agents, certified public accounts, and attorneys may represent their clients to the IRS on matters such as audits, collection issues, and appeals. Enrolled Agent (EA): An EA is a tax preparer that has been approved by the IRS to represent taxpayers. An EA must either have prior qualifying employment with the IRS or pass an intensive two-day exam on federal taxation and complete a background check. To maintain EA status, they must complete a specified number of credit hours each year of continuing education in accounting methods and tax regulations. An EA may work independently or as part of a firm and specialize in specific areas of tax law. An EA is a good option if you have a more complex tax situation. However, you’ll want to make sure their area of expertise applies to your personal situation. Fees and availability may vary, but you can expect an EA to charge less than a CPA. An EA is also qualified to help you with financial planning and give you tips that could help you reduce your taxes in the future. Certified Public Accountants (CPA): CPAs have a college degree (or the equivalent in work experience). They are licensed after passing a state professional qualifying exam. They are highly skilled in accounting. This makes them good candidates for complex tax planning and preparation if they are experienced in handling tax matters and enrolled in continuing education programs that keep them abreast of the constant changes to tax laws. If your return is quite complex, a CPA may be your best choice for tax preparation, but keep in mind they will charge much more than basic tax preparers. Attorneys: Tax attorneys often charge the highest fees as tax preparers. For taxpayers looking to shelter part of their income legally or for those who need specialized advice on municipal bonds, estate planning, and the like, hiring

a tax attorney is a good option. Non-Credentialed tax preparers: There are about 700,000 people who work as non-credentialed tax preparers in the United States. They often work part-time or only during the tax season. These preparers must have an active preparer tax identification number (PTIN) through the IRS, but beyond that, regulating tax preparers is done at the state level. In the vast majority of states, anyone can prepare tax returns for others without having to take an exam, get a license, or comply with other government regulations. Most tax preparers are legitimate and competent, but keep in mind that without a national license requirement, they may be working off of their own personal research and experience. Because of this, it is important you conduct a thorough interview with the tax preparer before you hire them. How to choose the right tax preparer: When it comes to choosing the right kind of tax preparer for you personally, much will depend on the complexity of your tax situation. After you’ve decided what qualifications your tax preparer needs, the following tips will help you choose someone who is trustworthy and competent: • Review the tax preparer’s credentials. EAs, CPAs, and tax attorneys are all qualified to represent their clients to the IRS on all matters. Other preparers can help you with forms and basic matters but cannot represent you in case of an audit. Don’t be afraid to ask about these or other qualifications before you hire someone. • Be wary of spectacular promises. If a tax preparer promises you larger refunds than the competition, this is a red flag. Many such tax preparers base their fees on the amount of your return and may be likely to use shady tax preparation tactics. In addition, it’s wise to avoid tax preparers who offer “refund anticipation loans” as you’ll probably lose a large percentage of your return to commission fees. • Get referrals from friends and family. One of the best ways to find a trustworthy tax preparer is to ask your loved ones for recommendations. Once you have a few options, check BBB.org, paying careful attention to other consumers’ reviews or complaint details. This will give you a clear view of what you can expect. • Think about availability. If the IRS finds errors in your tax forms or decides to perform an audit, will your tax preparer be available to help you with the details? Find out whether you can contact the tax preparer all year long or only during tax season. • Ask about fees ahead of time. Before you agree to any services, read the contracts carefully and understand how much the tax preparer charges for their services. Ask about extra fees for e-filing state, federal, and local returns, as well as fees for any unexpected complications. • If things don’t add up, find someone else. If a tax preparer can’t verify their credentials, has a record of bad reviews from previous clients, or their business practices don’t seem convincing, don’t do business with them. Remember that if you hire them, this individual will handle your sensitive personal information – information you need to keep safe from corrupt or fraudulent tax preparers. For more information and to learn how to protect yourself, Google “BBB 10 Steps to Avoid Scams”. If you spot a scam, whether you have lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your story can help protect consumers from similar scams.

South Holland, IL - Thornton Township High School District 205 and South Suburban College (SSC) co-hosted a collaborative event named “Let Freedom Ring, 60 Years Later from Stone Mountain” to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event, which took place on Monday, January 15th, at SSC’s Performing Arts Theater, gathered students, educators, community leaders, and distinguished guests in celebration of equality and justice. The program commenced with the presentation of colors by the District 205 Civil Air Patrol and the national anthem, followed by “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” performed by the District 205 Concert Choir and Combined District 205 High School Bands. Mistress of Ceremony, Mrs. Deborah Kimball Crosslin, facilitated the event, starting with the introduction of Rev. Dr. Ozzie E. Smith Jr., Pastor Emeritus of Covenant United Church of Christ. Rev. Throughout the event, various performances unfolded, including a soprano vocal performance by student Maggie Garner from SSC, accompanied by Marilyn Bourgeois of SSC on piano; a spoken word performance by SSC student KaVonya Moore; vocal performances by Simbryt Dortch and The Bourne Family; and a speech performance titled “Fall Forward,” written by Denzel Washington and performed by Dylan Browley from Thornton Township High School. Senator Napoleon Harris introduced the keynote speaker, Bishop Lance Davis, Founder and Executive Director of Building Our Own Community (BOOC), Inc. Bishop Davis delivered a

keynote address that resonated with the event’s theme. The event also featured a National Day of Service Presentation by Top Ladies of Distinction & Top Teens of America, South Suburban Chicago Chapter, who made a food donation to the South Suburban College food pantry. SSC Board Chair, Terry R. Wells, expressed gratitude on behalf of SSC. Dr. Nathaniel Cunningham Jr., Superintendent of Thornton Township High School District 205, expressed appreciation for the collaborative effort between both institutions: “This event was a testament to the power of unity and education in fostering positive change within our community.” Dr. Lynette Stokes, President of SSC, stated, “We are proud to have hosted this significant event that celebrates Dr. King’s legacy while inspiring future generations to continue his work towards equality.” Closing performances included a rendition of “Stand by Me” by the District 205 Concert Choir and Stevie Wonder’s iconic song “Happy Birthday” by the Combined District 205 High School Bands. Following the event, South Suburban College hosted a lunch in their atrium and presented a photo exhibit from the South Suburban Housing Center. 5 Easy Ways to Say“I Love You” (Family Features) If gift-giving isn’t your strong suit, occasions like Valentine’s Day are likely to bring on stress and worry, but procrastinating will only serve to elevate your unease. Follow these steps to simplify your shopping, and while you may not come to love the task of finding the perfect gift, your loved one will undoubtedly appreciate your effort. Browse for ideas online. Many retailers offer special promotions and gift idea sections on their websites, so finding inspiration can be as easy as visiting the sites of your loved one’s favorite stores. There are also dozens of articles online to help get the ideas flowing. Searches such as “gifts for horse lovers” or “Valentine’s gifts for a new boyfriend” will reveal a long list of ideas to peruse. Keep it simple. Although the advertising industry works hard to convince consumers otherwise, Valentine’s Day isn’t really all about the bling. Sure, a pretty bauble is a welcome gift, but there are plenty of ways to show your affection that don’t require spending a month’s salary. A heartfelt card paired with a memento of a meaningful event or place in your relationship sends the same loving sentiment.

Make it a (different) date. For many couples, navigating the demands of work, kids and life make spending time together a luxury. Instead of fighting crowds at busy restaurants on the official date, celebrate your love on a day of your own choosing, when you can relax and enjoy the time together without the pressure to rush through dessert so your table can be flipped for the next waiting couple. Give blooms a boost. A dozen long-stem red roses is a beautiful gesture, but unless your intended rose receiver is a strictly traditional type, try adding a little spice to your floral arrangement. Go for a bouquet in her favorite color, or have the flowers arranged in a practical vessel she can reuse to remember the occasion, such as a cocktail shaker or a watering can. Go ahead, gift yourself. It may seem counter-intuitive, but finding a gift you’ll enjoy may inspire an idea for your loved one. The trick is finding something you can share together, whether it’s tickets to a show or his and hers mugs for enjoying your favorite brew. Just be sure the item is something your intended will share your enthusiasm for, or you may as well go buy a blender. Find more ideas to simplify every occasion at eLivingToday.com.

Citizenship and Eligibility for FEMA Assistance FEMA is committed to helping Cook County homeowners and renters recover from the Sept. 17-18, 2023, severe storms and floods, including U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals and qualified aliens. Who is eligible for assistance? Usually, you or a member of your household must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or qualified alien to apply for assistance. However, if you do not meet the status of either U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or qualified alien, your household may still apply for and be considered for assistance if: • Another adult member of your household meets the eligibility criteria and certifies their citizenship status during the application process or signs the Declaration and Release form, or • The parent or guardian of a minor child who is a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or a qualified alien applies for assistance on behalf of the child, if they live in the same household. The parent or legal guardian must register as the co-applicant, and the minor child must be under age 18 at the time the disaster occurred. Who falls under qualified alien status? “Qualified alien” includes: • A legal permanent resident (“green card” holder) • An asylee, refugee or an alien whose deportation is being withheld • An alien paroled into the U.S. for at least one year • An alien granted conditional entry (per law in effect

prior to April 1, 1980) • A Cuban or Haitian entrant • Aliens in the U.S. who have been abused, subject to battery or extreme cruelty by a spouse or other family/ household member or have been a victim of a severe form of human trafficking. Non-Citizen nationals A non-citizen national is a person born in an outlying possession of the U.S. (e.g., American Samoa) on or after the date the U.S. acquired the possession, or a person whose parents are U.S. non-citizen nationals. All U.S. citizens are U.S. nationals; however, not every U.S. national is a U.S. citizen. Qualified minor children The parent or guardian of a minor child living in the same household may apply for assistance on behalf of the minor child who is a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien. The minor child must be under age 18 as of the first day of the incident period on Sept. 17, 2023. Resources See Citizenship and Immigration Status Requirements for Federal Public Benefits for more information in multiple languages at https://www.fema.gov/assistance/individual/ program/citizenship-immigration-status. If you’re unsure of your immigration status, talk to an immigration expert to learn if your status falls within the immigration status requirements for FEMA disaster assistance. Human Rights Leader Shares Empowering Advice to Help Women Move Forward in the New Year NEW YORK — As the new year begins, many people are setting goals and resolutions to improve their lives. For some women, this means refocusing on their own dreams and aspirations. But for others, the start of a new year only brings added pressure and self-doubt. Why is it that some women are so hard on themselves? “Even at your lowest moments, you still need to move forward,” encourages Jánelle Marina Méndez Viera, who endured multiple adversities throughout her childhood and early adulthood. She is now passionate about helping other women overcome challenges. “Maybe you’ve been told not to go for that risky job, or you’re afraid to relocate for your career because you’re a mom. It’s OK to be scared while you’re trying to figure something out. We all have moments when we don’t feel safe and comfortable. Risk taking throws you out of your comfort zone. As long as you’re not in danger, that discomfort will be part of your growth.” Méndez Viera turned her adversities into her life’s mission. Méndez Viera endured many obstacles as a child and young adult, including multiple forms of sexual violence and modern slavery, some of which happened while she served in the military. Now in her early 30s, she is using those negative experiences to fuel positive changes. She has lobbied for and achieved changes in nearly every level of government. She is an author, academic researcher, human rights activist, entrepreneur and public speaker. “This journey has cultivated a resilience and determination within me that I hope to use to inspire others,” she says. Méndez Viera says you, too, can overcome anything. Here’s what kept her going. For women who are struggling right now, Méndez Viera suggests taking some of the same steps she followed. They include: 1. Believe in yourself and don’t give up. “No one knows your strength and capabilities better than you. Remain assured in your abilities and potential, despite any negative voices around or within you. Read the stories of people who’ve come before you and overcame similar adversities. This is extremely helpful during moments of doubt and can provide reassurance when things are looking dim.” Méndez Viera found role models in confident women, some of whom paved the way for her own technological and human rights

achievements. “In the 1940s, Hedy Lamarr invented the ‘frequency hopping’ technology that became Bluetooth. Eleanor Roosevelt was instrumental in founding the United Nations. On a personal level, I had an aunt whose unconditional love and support inspired me to be a more compassionate person. And even though my own family was dysfunctional, I had friends who taught me how to have healthy relationships.” 2. Take time for self-care. “Healing emotionally and physically is integral to personal development. For me, this meant regular exercise, meditation, therapy and ensuring a healthy lifestyle. Find your go-to selfcare activities and make them a regular part of your routine, especially during the points that you want to give up.” 3. Reach out for help. “It can be tempting to isolate oneself in difficult times, but I’ve found that reaching out to support groups, psychologists and networks of individuals who have faced similar experiences can be very helpful.” 4. Become an ambassador of change. “Activism provided me with a sense of purpose and passion. Use your experience to influence changes that can help others with similar struggles so that you are empowering others and making their journeys less painful and more about healing.” 5. Never stop learning. “Continual growth and education served as a beacon of light in my darkest times. As an author and inventor, I found solace, purpose, and game-changing dynamism in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation. Resources like PTSD support groups, the Veterans Administration, counseling sessions, and various online platforms such as Veterans Crisis Line can be of immense help during troubled times. “For me, reading research reports regarding various social sciences helped me understand the societal problems that caused my trauma. They empowered me to take meaningful actions for advocacy that led to me authoring the Restoration of Honor Act of 2019.” She emphasizes, “Sometimes obstacles can be opportunities to learn more about yourself, and to create a better path for your life. You can learn to thrive even during hard times.” To learn more about Méndez Viera, please visit www.JanelleMarinaMendez.com.
