South Suburban College Board Of Trustees Celebrates Men’s Baseball Team Regional Title
South Suburban College (SSC) men’s baseball team was honored by the SSC Board of Trustees on Thursday, January 12, for receiving their fourteenth regional title from the National Junior College Athletic Association. The baseball team, coached by Steve Ruzich, has an overall record of 42-19 with a regional championship score of 9-8. “It was a challenging season dealing with the horrible spring weather. I am so proud of these players for what they accomplished. They were dedicated and worked hard, which is why they are champions,” stated Coach Ruzich. Coach Ruzich has had twentyfour players drafted by major league teams, including six players that have reached the big leagues. As a previous player, Steve was named second-team All-American Catcher, All-District Catcher, and All-Area Catcher.
During the evening board celebration, the SSC Board of Trustees acknowledged the accomplishments of Coach Ruzich and the baseball team while encouraging continued success in 2023. SSC Chairman Terry Wells added that the baseball team joins other successful SSC sports teams, such as the Women’s Soccer Team and the Men’s Basketball Team, in successful runs. “We should consider adding the school of champions to our moniker in the future, Congrats Team,” stated Chairman Wells. In an interview with the SSC PR team, baseball player Donavan Noble stated, “Being recognized by the SSC Board Members was an honor. Listening to what they said in terms of congratulating us meant a lot. I want to give a big thank you to all of them.” Noble stated that he looks forward to working with his teammates and reaching new heights as a team for the 2023 season.
If you are interested in participating in the SSC Men’s Baseball program, contact Coach Steve Ruzich, Director of Athletics, at (708) 596-2000 ext. 5843 or via email at sruzich@ssc.edu.
The
South Suburban College (SSC) and Pace Bus have teamed up to offer a pre-hiring event on January 17, 2023, for job seekers to meet with Pace staff. During the 3-hour event, which begins at 6 pm, applicants will complete a screening process which includes application completion, an assessment questionnaire, and a background check. All candidates must bring a valid Illinois driver’s license and a DMV or Secretary of State Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) (also called Driving Record Abstracts in Illinois) with no more than two infractions or tickets in the last five years.
Candidates who conclude the application process will complete a two-week CDL Class B licensure program with SSC February
13th before transitioning to a six-week on-the-job training with Pace. The class will occur at SSC’s South Holland location. To remove financial barriers for students to pursue and complete the program actively, Pace will cover the costs of tuition, training, books, fees, and other expenses associated with the program. In partnership with Pace, SSC’s Work Equity Initiative will provide additional support and resources to students completing the Pace training.
For more information about the CDL Class B licensure program with SSC and Pace Bus, contact SSC’s Continuing Education Program at 708-596-2000 ext. 2231.
Auditor Klutz appointed Courtney Schaafsma to serve as Chief of Staff, announced earlier this week during Monday’s inauguration ceremony.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have Courtney join our team,” said Auditor Klutz. “Courtney has extensive knowledge and experience in government finance at the state and local levels. Her expertise and commitment to a supporting a more transparent and accountable government are what made her a perfect fit for the role.”
Schaafsma previously served under the Pence and Holcomb Administrations as the Commissioner for the Department of Local Government Finance. She has also served as the Director of School Efficiency with the Indiana Department of Education (1.5
years). She has also served as Executive Director of the Distressed Unit Appeal Board (4 years).
“She brings 12 years of leadership at the state level in addition to almost 10 years serving as a municipal financial advisor for Crowe, LLP.”
As Chief of Staff, Schaafsma will plan and direct all administrative, financial, and operational activities in collaboration with the Auditor of State.
“The Auditor of State’s Office continues to modernize and improve the services it provides to Hoosier residents and state employees. I appreciate the opportunity to work with Auditor Klutz and the AOS team on these important initiatives,” said Schaafsma.

Real Estate Questions & Answers
Question: I knew I would have to go through the buyer’s inspection when I accepted this contract, but now I am told that FHA has to inspect my Home and that the repairs they require must be completed in order for the buyer to get their loan. I am not happy about this. Is this correct?
Answer: First of all, congratulations on getting an accepted offer on your home. In many markets, that is not easy to do. But that does not mean that the deal will close. Contracts have contingencies that must be satisfied in order for a closing to take place. Example: Contingent on your buyer getting a loan, Contingent on a satisfactory home inspection, Contingent on your home appraising to at least the purchase price, etc. If you have a buyer who is obtaining FHA financing, your deal is also contingent on you completing the repairs required by the FHA inspector/appraiser. The FHA inspector is an appraiser sent to determine the value of the home and look for significant deficiencies according to FHA criteria such as obvious
mold growth, chipped paint on windows older than 1978, broken glass, lack of GFCI’s by sinks, etc. If they find defects then they will require repairs which they will reinspect, to ensure the repairs were made correctly. These required repairs are usually minor if the homeowner has kept their home in good shape.
You are not required to do these repairs. You may say no and look for another buyer that is obtaining conventional financing or paying cash. The problem is that in many markets, the vast majority of all qualified buyers are using FHA financing. The smart move would be for you to do the repairs and enjoy your check at closing.

Open the (back) door to a Roth IRA
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN
There aren’t many drawbacks to having a high income — but being unable to invest in a Roth IRA might be one of them. Are there strategies that allow high-income earners to contribute to this valuable retirement account?
Before we delve into that question, let’s consider the rules. In 2023, you can contribute the full amount to a Roth IRA — $6,500, or $7,500 if you’re 50 or older — if your modified adjusted gross income is less than $138,000 (if you’re single) or $218,000 (if you’re married and filing jointly). If you earn more than these amounts, the amount you can contribute decreases until it’s phased out completely if your income exceeds $153,000 (single) or $228,000 (married, filing jointly).
A Roth IRA is attractive because its earnings and withdrawals are tax free, provided you’ve had the account at least five years and you don’t start taking money out until you’re 59½. Furthermore, when you own a Roth IRA, you’re not required to take withdrawals from it when you turn 72, as you would with a traditional IRA, so you’ll have more flexibility in your retirement income planning and your money will have the chance to potentially keep growing. But given your income, how can you contribute to a Roth?
You may want to consider what’s known as a “backdoor Roth” strategy. Essentially, this involves contributing money to a new traditional IRA, or taking money from an existing one, and then converting the funds to a Roth IRA. But while this backdoor strategy sounds simple, it involves some serious considerations.
Specifically, you need to evaluate how much of your traditional IRA is in pretax or after-tax dollars. When you contribute pretax dollars to a traditional IRA, your contributions lower your annual taxable
income. However, if your income is high enough to disqualify you from contributing directly to a Roth IRA, you may also earn too much to make deductible (pretax) contributions to a traditional IRA. Consequently, you might have contributed after-tax dollars to your traditional IRA, on top of the pretax ones you may have put in when your income was lower. (Earnings on after-tax contributions will be treated as pretax amounts.)
In any case, if you convert pretax assets from your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, the amount converted will be fully taxable in the year of the conversion. So, if you were to convert a large amount of these assets, you could face a hefty tax bill. And since you probably don’t want to take funds from the converted IRA itself to pay for the taxes, you’d need another source of funding, possibly from your savings and other investments.
Ultimately, then, a backdoor Roth IRA strategy may make the most sense if you have few or no pretax assets in any traditional IRA, including a SEP-IRA and a SIMPLE IRA. If you do have a sizable amount of pretax dollars in your IRA, and you’d still like to convert it to a Roth IRA, you could consider spreading the conversion over a period of years, potentially diluting your tax burden.
Consult with your tax advisor when considering a backdoor Roth strategy. But if it’s appropriate for your situation, it could play a role in your financial strategy, so give it some thought.

Heart Smart
I’m shocked at how much I think about myself. I think about how I come across to others, how I look, how I speak, what people think of my professional life, etc.
It’s as if every day I go to a courtroom and I’m trying to prove my worth to the world. I bring up evidence of my accomplishments and the positive comments people have made about me. I display the latest scale reading that shows I’ve lost two pounds. But then the other side brings up evidence of how I failed to do my job as well as I should have last week, how I continue to struggle with certain sins in my life, how I didn’t respond lovingly to something a loved one told me. The list goes on. The trial goes on. Day after day.
This is how everyone lives their life. Trying to achieve a balance of evidence that convinces them they’re worth something. That they’re living their life for a reason.
If you’re a Christian, however, you don’t need to go to this courtroom every day. The trial is over. The verdict is already in.
When Jesus Christ died on the cross to remove your sins, the verdict was delivered. You’ve been found worthy. Not because of anything you’ve done, but because of what Christ has done. Christ removed your sin and replaced it with perfect righteousness.
If we acknowledge that God’s opinion of us is the only one that ultimately matters (it’s the only one that determines our eternal destination, after all), we become beholden to no one else’s evaluation of our worth. We’re worthy because Christ is worthy.
This gives us freedom to stop obsessively thinking about ourselves — allowing us to devote ourselves to loving and thinking about others.

CITY: Tom lived a rich and full life of 76 years. He loved his wife of 53 years, Donna and his kids, Cathy and John, his grands and sister Rosemary—but most of all Tom loved life! His picture with this item shows him in the Navy circa 1964-1968. The ‘party’ as Tom called it, drew over 300 family and friends to the VFW where an Honor Guard saluted him, a Polka Band serenaded him and toasts all around to a one of a kind individual. A member of many military organizations, a worker for Calumet City and a beloved member of the community, Tom was remembered for his sense of humor, telling of jokes and the ability to make peace in the world he lived in. Tom died on December 15th, 2022. At the end, as his son John recalled....”Tom left this earth as he lived it. He made friends with all of his phenomenal caregivers at Franciscan Health Hospital in Munster. His family deeply appreciates their love and care. He told jokes that made those around him care deeply. In the end, surrounded by those who loved him, he had a small sip of scotch, told a joke and went on his way.....” ***

2023 Unsold Reasons
MIKE BUDER
Several times lately, sellers will call me to come out and evaluate their home and possibly become their 2nd or 3rd Realtor in the last year. “Why, oh why” they ask “is my house still unsold?” Well, Mr. and Mrs. Seller, there are many reasons. Reason #1 “YOU’RE OVERPRICED”. This one seems like it should be obvious, but apparently, it’s only obvious to everyone but you. Unlike the temporarily insane seller’s market of 2020 through 2021, at the price you have been listed at, today’s buyers have some specific expectations. The other homes that have sold in your area in that price range have had brand new kitchens, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops etc. Your house HAD a brand-new kitchen in 1992… but you’re still talking about it like it’s new, with its laminate counters, white on white appliances except, of course for the avocado green dishwasher that is still running like a champ… “they don’t make ‘em like that anymore” you say! You have 3-dimensional ceramic tile flooring…you’re very proud of it, you had it imported from Italy, apparently directly from the Vatican, based on how you talk about it, but the stuff actually hurts to walk on and the grout shows every spill
over the past ten years. The giant whirlpool tub in the master bath is large enough to seat seven, but the water pressure is so low that it would take 2 hours to fill. But wait… you have an in-ground pool!!! That should be worth something. None of those other houses had an in-ground pool. True enough, all they had was grass. Lovely manicured lawns, in their backyard. Some with patios or decks others just a simple backyard. On the other hand, you had a 40’ x 70’ kidney shaped pool installed at a great expense (in 1980) that uses up the entire backyard. You have just enough room to pull your gas grill near the back door. Reason #2 Hmmm… I guess there aren’t many reasons, are there? There’s only 1 reason. Based on the house you’re selling, compared to other properties on the market…YOU’RE OVERPRICED!

DEGRAFF
On Monday, January 16th, 2023, Ivan Henry DeGraff passed away, just two weeks before turning 92. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Reta; his children, Shari DeGraff Stewart and Jeff DeGraff; his son-in-law, Bob Stewart; and two of his grandchildren, Connor and Noah Stewart, as he took his final, peaceful breath. Ike was born on February 4th, 1931, to Isaac and Minnie (Anker) DeGraff in South Holland, Illinois. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and later returned to his hometown where he married Audrey Gross in January 1957. Together they had two children, Jeff and Shari. Audrey died in 1971 at the age of 33 from cancer. He later met and married LaReta Burzynski from Valier, Illinois in 1972. On February 12th they would have celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. Together they created and ran Grammer Tours, a successful tour business with Ike as the bus driver and Reta as tour guide. The joyful combination of their wit and warmth endeared them to the many who joined them over the years. Previous to his tour bus days, Ike had been in the poultry business, owned car washes, and could unfailingly be found each morning at the South Holland coffee shop, “shootin’ the breeze” with the guys. He was passionate about boating, fishing, golfing and horses. He loved sunshine, and in 2005, they bought a small horse farm in Fisherville, Kentucky, with his son, Jeff, and moved there to enjoy warmer weather and closer proximity to grandchildren. There, he and Reta were active members of Highview Baptist Church and found a dear community of friends. His faith was enormously important to him; and in his final years, he found great solace in knowing that he would be welcomed home by his Lord. Ike will be forever remembered for his incredible wit, constant quips, and twinkling blue eyes; charming everyone up to the nurses tending him in his final days. He is survived by his devoted wife, Reta, whose committed care for him over the years was a true sign of their shared love; also by his children, Jeff and Shari; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many beloved cousins, inlaws, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20th from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EST at Highview Baptist Church (7711 Fegenbush Lane, Louisville, Kentucky, 40228). The funeral service will follow there at 12:00 pm EST, along with a lunch provided by their Sunday School class. The family-only burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to Highview Baptist Church.
My Letter to My Congressman WOODROW WILCOX
On January 19, 2023, I wrote a letter to my congressman about one big problem with the Medicare system. Following is the body of my letter.
Your staff knows of my work to help senior citizens correct Medicare related medical bill problems for the clients of the insurance agency where I work. When I have asked for specific help in specific cases, they have helped.
In this letter, I want to tell you about one specific problem that keeps coming when I help seniors. Please, ask Medicare if there is already a solution now. If there is not, let me work with your staff to suggest changes in Medicare law to fix this problem.
When there is a problem with a medical firm in Indiana that uses a billing firm in Indiana, if the firms do not respond to my letters or phone calls to correct a billing error, I help the client file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s Department of Consumer Affairs. That office has been quick to respond and “put fire under” the firm that did not want to cooperate with me.
But when Indiana people go to Illinois for treatment, or when a firm uses an out of state biller, connecting with someone at the firm who will cooperate to correct a bill problem is very difficult and nearly impossible.
I suggest that on every bill from any medical firm or biller, the correct contact information of the person or department responsible for taking complaints of medical bill problems that need to be corrected be clearly shown on the bill in at least 12-point type.
The biggest problem in the Medicare system that costs senior citizens the most money is the breakdown of Medicare
electronic communication system. Very often, Medicare never sends the claim information to a senior’s secondary insurer because of the breakdown. If the secondary insurer does not get the claim information, it doesn’t pay the bill. The senior then starts to get hounded to pay a bill that the secondary insurer would have paid if it had received the claim. To help our client fix this, I contact the medical firm or biller and tell them that the secondary insurer never got the claim from Medicare. I tell them that to fix that problem as fast as possible, the billing firm should send the critical claim information to the secondary insurer and I give the address. This works to get the claim paid when I can find a competent and responsible person at the firm sending the bill. That is why the contact information of a responsible department or person on a bill is so critical. Please, help. This is a continuing problem with the Medicare system that is costing lots of money and time to seniors on Medicare and those who help such seniors. In some of my published articles and in my book, I showed the calculations for how I estimated that the problem of Medicare failing to send claim information alone costs seniors on Medicare over ONE BILLION DOLLARS per year in wrongful bills to senior citizens.
Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.
