by Janice R Newman Don’t stop believing! Absolutely, never stop believing in yourself, your dreams, your goals, and your future. Keep believing without ceasing! These words are a guide to help keep us on track, even when things get tough. When you stop believing, it’s like killing or turning off the light and spark that guides you through the darkness and difficulties. Belief isn’t just about being hopeful in achieving big dreams, it’s something we use every day without even realizing it. Think about going to work. Every day, you trust that your hard work and diligence will result in the next paycheck. You only go to work because you honestly believe the company will honor their part by paying you for work delivered. You believe that your home will be safe when you return from work. You have belief and faith that the train will get you there on time. These are everyday examples of how belief is a part of our everyday lives. Our belief system affects us emotionally, physically, and mentally. Emotionally, it gives us the strength to keep going. It’s like a shield to protect our feelings, protects us from self-doubt, over worrying about the future, and makes us feel brave or less scared when faced with uncertainty. A deeply imbedded belief system confronts challenges and obstacles by giving us the courage to face our fears. When doubt and worry creep in, having belief in yourself and God urges you to move forward and builds resilience. Jesus reminds us in Mark 9:23 ‘“If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”’ Remind yourself “You’ve got this” to keep emotions focused. Physically, belief has a profound impact on our well-being, for the good if, they are positive. People with positive beliefs typically have better health outcomes because they’re training their minds to expect good results and wellness. Our bodies respond to the power of our thoughts based on what we feed them. Words and thoughts that are negative or positive will produce bad or good outcomes respectively. For example, you could feel fine but if someone tells you that you look awful,
Bishop Noll Institute hosts ‘Royal Rumble’ robotics competition for young minds HAMMOND | Forget the wrestling, this “Royal Rumble” was all about brains, teamwork and the ingenuity of elementary school robotics whizzes. More than 45 teams and 100 students from across Northwest Indiana and Wisconsin descended upon Bishop Noll Institute Jan. 27 for the MSLR Robotics’ inaugural “Full Volume” VEX IQ robotics competition. While the competitors were young, the challenges were anything but elementary. Students put their coding and engineering skills to the test as their custom-built robots battled it out in a series of minute-long matches across four different fields. Bishop Noll high school students stepped up to the plate, acting as guides for the younger participants. They handled team check-ins and ensured smooth transitions between matches. Bishop Noll STEM teacher Brian Lambie explained, “Every 4 minutes our students had to have two different teams checked in and ready to set up next. With nearly 200 matches between 59 teams, they were hard at work all day. They expressed that it was fun but tiring, and had a feeling of accomplishment at the end.” Bishop Noll junior Cara Van Til attended the event as a BNI representative. She took photos throughout the day’s competition. “I would say my favorite part was trying to learn their version of the VEX rules,” Van Til said. “Our school uses VEX V5, whereas the competition used VEX IQ.” Van Til, who plans to pursue a career in the STEM world as either a civil engineer or architect, enjoys Noll’s STEM program. “We get to challenge our minds,” she said. “Not only do we have to learn how to build these robots, but we also need to know how to code them and what regulations we need to keep in mind.” Bishop Noll STEM teacher Mary Albrecht said she was in awe of MSLR Robotics, the group that put on the competition. “I loved working with them to put on the first VEX robotics competition at BNI! I learned so much. The student teams were incredible,” she said. Lambie said Bishop
Four teams compete in a 1-minute match during MSLR Robotics’ inaugural “Full Volume” VEX IQ robotics competition held at Bishop Noll Institute. ______________________________ Noll likely will continue to cooperate with MSLR Robotics moving forward. “We would love to bring their expertise to the high school level competition of VRC. We will also get a jump on next year by practicing with in-house scrimmage matches and planning early for next year’s competition.” Bishop Noll Institute is a Catholic, co-educational four-year high school under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gary. Now in its 103rd school year, Bishop Noll consistently receives high rankings from the Indiana Department of Education and offers the only STREAM (incorporating the principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, Religion, Art and Math) program in Northwest Indiana. For more information on enrollment, visit bishopnoll.org or email admissions@ bishopnoll.org. For more information on the robotics competition, visit http://www. mslrrobotics.org/.
look rundown, or ask if you’re sick, you start believing them. Now you’ll start feeling sick, because based on the input you believe. A doctor can give you several possible diagnoses, but you’ll believe that you have the worst one and you’ll never get well. You hear stories of people with outstanding faith who defied doctors by making a miraculous recovery from a terminal illness. They have strong faith and belief that they will be cured. Their positive belief provides the strength and willpower to face their circumstance with optimism. This is a necessity for healing and vitality. When we believe in ourselves and our abilities to overcome challenges, our bodies respond by releasing less stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and strengthening our immune system. Mentally, belief is fuel for the mind. It’s powerful in building our confidence and hope, that drives us to take on challenges and aspirations. It breaks down barriers that say “no”, which confine us from reaching for the stars and pursuing our dreams. When we have a strong belief in ourselves, our plans, and our God-given abilities, we’re not afraid to take risks, think out of the box, or try a different path to reach the destination. You must strengthen your beliefs mentally to motivate you physically and emotionally to act accordingly. Remember Philippians 4:13 ESV “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Positive beliefs allow you to envision a brighter future, be creative with your passion, and have an optimistic mindset. What do you believe you could accomplish if you knew you could? What could your mind create for you to accomplish? Remember, if your mind can create it, and believe in it, then you can accomplish it. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are thinking of selling our home but want to sell it in as-is condition. Is this a good idea? Answer: Selling a house as-is means that a buyer will get the property in its exact, current condition, without any additional repairs or upgrades. Avoiding expensive repairs helps you avoid potential financial strain. Most real estate transactions involve some back-and-forth bargaining — a buyer might request a credit if a home inspection identifies a serious plumbing issue, for example — but a property with the “as-is” distinction means that the seller isn’t going to address any changes to the home’s condition. In other words, what you see is what you get. Homes sold as-is generally fetch a lower price, due to the anticipated repair costs the buyers will have to shoulder. Skipping the repairs saves you money on the front end, but you can’t expect to price an as-is property the same way you would if it were in better condition. The number of interested buyers will likely be less for an as-is listing, as not all are interested in a house that needs work. Potential buyers might face difficulties in

securing a loan for a house in poor shape, which can prolong the selling timeframe. It might even lead to the deal falling through, particularly if the home appraisal comes in short of the agreed-upon price. Selling as-is doesn’t excuse you from disclosing known defects. For example, if you know there’s a mold problem or a crack in the foundation, you’re legally obligated to inform the buyer. If you misrepresent the condition of the property, you can be held liable for any issues that arise. You might not be investing in any major upgrades, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on presenting your home in its best light. You can still make sure the property is neat and tidy. Keep the yard mowed, surfaces clean, beds made, and dishes put away, and minimize clutter as much as possible. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Last week, I kicked off a four-week, personal reflection about my experience of moving into and connecting with a predominantly black community. In Fall 1998, I left the Dutch-Canadian subculture of my youth to study for pastoral ministry at Mid-America Reformed Seminary in Dyer, IN. At that time, I lived in Lansing, IL. During those years, I began to meet and get to know African-Americnas and learn some things culturally. Having grown up in rural Canada, this was also my first close-up view of American racial and cultural dynamics in the Chicagoland context. Over time, I found myself drawn to a unique brand of vitality and expressiveness that I associated with blackAmerican culture. This was my first experiential lesson that deepened in me this conviction: that cultural crosspollination, when centered on Jesus Christ in the gospel and grounded in the word of God, is part of God’s redemptive plan that his redeemed people, together, radiate his kaleidoscopic glory and beauty to a lost and broken world. I also began to realize that no amount of reading, though valuable, substitutes for cross-cultural relationships, conversations, and experiences. People and their cultures aren’t an abstraction. They’re made up of individuals with their own stories, experiences, and perspectives. The better I get to know individuals outside my cultural context, the more freely I can ask sensitive racial and cultural questions. But don’t conclude that my friendships with black folks are primarily focused on culture and race. They’re not. Such relationships have taught me that we are more alike than we’re different. Yes, our culture, history, and related issues are part of who we are, and they matter. Those, however, who primarily fixate on group identity and racial differences often do more to divide us than unite us. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Valentine’s Day is a fixed day on the calendar that got lumped into a mid-February holiday on the ancient Roman calendar called Lupercalia—which some historians believe is what led to Valentine’s Day being all about love. Lupercalia celebrated fertility, and may have included a ritual in which men and women were paired off by choosing names from a jar. In Ancient Greece, people observed a mid-winter celebration for the marriage of the god Zeus and the goddess Hera.

Financial Advice Column
Why see a financial advisor? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Investing for your future is important — but it can be challenging. How can you navigate the complexities of the financial markets and make the right decisions for your situation? Fortunately, you don’t have to go it alone. A financial advisor can help you in these key areas: • Developing a personal financial strategy – Many factors go into creating a long-term financial strategy. What is your risk tolerance? When would you like to retire? What sort of retirement lifestyle have you envisioned? What are your other important goals? A financial advisor will ask these and other questions in getting to know you, your family situation and your hopes for the future. By taking this type of holistic approach, a financial advisor can help you create financial and investment strategies appropriate for your needs. • Avoiding mistakes – A financial advisor can help you avoid costly investment mistakes. One such mistake is attempting to “time” the market. Investors pursue market timing when they try to “buy low” and “sell high.” In theory, of course, this is a great idea — if you could consistently buy investments — stocks, in particular — when their price is down and then sell them when the price has risen significantly, you’d always make some tidy profits. The main drawback to this technique, though, is that it’s virtually impossible to follow, especially for individual investors. Nobody, not even professional money managers, can really predict with any accuracy when stock prices have reached high or low points. Consequently, those who try to make these guesses could miss out on opportunities. For example, investors who are determined to buy low might not want to purchase investments when the market is up — but this practice could lead to taking a “time out”
from investing just when the market is in the midst of a rally. But a financial advisor can steer clients toward a more disciplined approach, such as buying quality investments and holding them for the long term, regardless of the ups and downs of the market. • Checking progress toward your goals – If you were to invest without any guidance, you might not be looking at your investments’ performance with the proper perspective. For example, some investors simply compare their portfolio returns against a widely used market index, such as the S&P 500. But this comparison may not be that useful. The S&P 500 only measures the stock prices of the leading publicly traded U.S. companies by market capitalization — but your investment portfolio, if properly diversified, will include investments other than U.S. stocks, such as bonds, government securities, international stocks and more. Consequently, the performance of your portfolio won’t track that of the S&P 500 or any other single index, either. Your financial advisor can help you employ more meaningful benchmarks, such as whether your portfolio’s progress is on track toward helping you meet your financial goals. Also, a financial advisor will review your portfolio and investment strategy regularly to determine what changes, if any, need to be made, either in response to the markets or to events in your life. Investing for your future can be exciting and rewarding — and you can feel more confident in your decisions when you have someone helping you along the way. Wet January creates flooding issues across Illinois Welcomed precipitation across most of the state in late January contributed to what has been a slow journey to recovery from the 2023 drought. Illinois received an average of 4.25 inches of precipitation Jan. 1-29, which was 2.53 inches above normal, the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Illinois field office reported. The active pattern created some flooding issues and extremely muddy conditions. “We made up some serious ground in drought relief over the last few weeks in southern Illinois,” State Climatologist Trent Ford told FarmWeek. “Deep-layer soil and water table levels are still much below average, but they’re improving.” Looking back on a rollercoaster crop season, a dry start to summer pushed the entire state into drought by late June and while timely summer rains limited significant row crop impacts, a dry fall reignited the drought causing low water levels on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The tables turned again in January. Ford said levels on the Mississippi River between Cairo and Memphis, Tennessee, have increased 10 to 15 feet in some areas over the past couple of weeks. While significant rainfall is encouraging, it will take a lot more to reach normal river levels due to the intensity of drought experienced across the entire Midwest down into the southern states. Meanwhile, some bodies of water, including the Illinois and Rock rivers, reached or surpassed flood stage last week. Ice jams also contributed to flooding issues at some locations. A similar story can be told for soil moisture levels across the state. Ford said there has been significant progress replenishing moisture, but

PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that pursuant to a Judgment of Foreclosure and Sale entered in the above cause on June 27, 2023, an agent for The Judicial Sales Corporation, will at 10:30 AM on March 18, 2024, at The Judicial Sales Corporation, One South Wacker, 1st Floor Suite 35R, Chicago, IL, 60606, sell at a public sale to the highest bidder, as set forth below, the following described real estate:
especially in southern and western Illinois, two years of drought conditions have dried up deeper level soils. “For example, our well at the water survey site in Belleville, the water tables are still 10 feet deeper than what we typically expect this time of year,” he said. The topsoil moisture supply ranked 57% adequate, 39% surplus and just 4% short statewide as of Jan. 28, according to NASS. February is usually the driest month of the year, so Ford is not expecting much help in the near term, but he said, “The biggest determinant for crop impacts from drought is how much rain falls in spring and summer. “So even if we come in with fairly dry soils in the spring, if we get enough rain this summer, there won’t be that many impacts.” On the flip side, if there is a dry pattern in the spring and summer, Ford said Illinois remains in a vulnerable state for drought, but that does not mean a repeat of 2023 is inevitable. “Because there isn’t a strong signal pointing to drought in spring and summer, I’m not overly concerned at this time,” he said. “The 2023 drought was not predicted very well more than a few weeks out, so we’ll have to wait and see what weather we get come April and May.” At the end of January, the U.S. Drought Monitor showed parts of western Illinois and the entire southern third of the state were experiencing abnormally dry conditions with 18% in moderate drought. This story was distributed through a cooperative project between Illinois Farm Bureau and the Illinois Press Association. For more food and farming news, visit FarmWeekNow.com.

DEVRIES
Henry R. DeVries, age 90, of Crete, IL, formerly of Lansing, IL, went home to his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 4, 2024. Henry was born on December 15, 1933, and raised on a farm south of Chicago, in the Blue Island area. As a child growing up during the Great Depression, he learned thrift from an early age. He became a man who always appreciated his many blessings, and he continually had an eye out for a good bargain. He studied engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology in the 1950s. In 1957, he was drafted into the military, where he carried out electrical engineering work while stationed in Germany. In 1977 he co-founded Atlas Pumps, where he designed and manufactured stainless steel corrosionresistant centrifugal-force pumps for industrial applications. Following his retirement, he remained active in the community by volunteering at the Seaman’s Mission and at his church, as well as joining a photography club, tending a large garden, going on flea market expeditions with a buddy, and regularly meeting with friends from his cardiac rehabilitation program. Henry is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Elaine DeVries, nee Fieldhouse; his daughter Andrea (Howard Degenholtz)
DeVries; his grandchildren Isaac, Sonia, and Annabel, as well as his sister Carol (Vern) Hoffman, brother David (Ruth) DeVries, sistersin-law Joyce DeVries and Audrey Carlson; brother-inlaw Richard Fieldhouse, and many nieces and nephews. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!
Helped Dyer Client With Bill WOODROW WILCOX
On February 1, 2024, I helped a client from Dyer with a medical bill. After we phoned her insurance company, I sent a letter to the hospital that billed her. With some editing to protect her privacy, here is the letter that I sent for her. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $494.22 on Account Number XXXXX for services rendered in May 2023. I phoned the patient’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this balance. The representative told me that the insurance company did not get this claim from Medicare until November 10, 2023. There was a computer problem on the day that it was processed. This bill is being routed to a management team to learn why the balance was not paid and to reprocess it
for payment of the balance. The insurance company asked that you allow at least 30 days for it to accomplish this. I helped this client AT NO CHARGE. We help all our clients with such bill problems without charge to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients and want to treat them well. Does the insurance agency that you use give this high level of customer service? If not, shouldn’t you switch to a firm that does? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by working to correct medical bill problems. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.
Interest penalties slashed from 18% to 9% for homeowners who are late paying property tax bills Historic reforms championed by Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas are about to take effect as property owners face a March 1 due date for 2023 First Installment tax bills. For those who are late paying their taxes due March 1, the interest rate penalty will drop from 18% a year to 9% a year. The monthly rate of interest charged on late taxes will fall from 1.5% to 0.75. “These interest rate cuts will help homeowners at a time when banks, credit card companies, mortgage lenders and others continue to charge relatively high interest rates,” Pappas said. “These lower interest rates will help those who are unable to pay their property taxes in full by the due date and who make partial payments on late taxes to spread out the burden.” The lower rates mean property owners will save $90 a year for every $1,000 owed in late taxes. Researchers with the Treasurer’s Office
estimated the interest rate reduction will save Cook County property owners between $25 million and $35 million a year. The lower rates are expected to allow more homeowners to pay off delinquent bills and avoid the Annual Tax Sale. Illinois lawmakers approved the historic reforms in May 2023 and Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the bill into law in August 2023. The Treasurer’s Office worked with The Chicago Community Trust philanthropic organization and others to promote the reforms. Pappas pushed for legislative reforms after her office released studies in 2022. Researchers documented how redlining and other practices deprived families of opportunities to build generational wealth. Studies also documented how inequity in the property tax system has had a larger impact in neighborhoods where greater numbers of Black and Latino families live.

Toyota Joins the Salvation Army to Help Homeless Families Chicago, IL – Chicagoans will get a chance to see a stable of exciting new products from Toyota, including a few vehicles not on sale yet, at the 2024 Chicago Auto Show. But first, while preparing to showcase an array of new vehicles, Toyota will highlight its commitment to support Chicagoland unhoused families through its “Walk In My Boots” community outreach project. For the 10th year, Toyota will donate new insulated winter boots and socks along with a home-style buffet luncheon to family members residing at The Salvation Army Evangeline Booth Lodge and The Salvation Army Shield of Hope. Toyota also plans to give a $15,000 donation to The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division enabling them to continue to provide shelter for families in times of crisis. With this program, in Chicago alone, Toyota has donated more than 1,775 pairs of winter boots and socks to people in need and has contributed over $150,000 to The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division during the Chicago Auto Show Days. The Salvation Army Evangeline Booth Lodge is a shelter for women and men with children, along with married couples with children suddenly homeless because of eviction, disasters such as a fire or flood, loss of utilities, domestic violence, being stranded while traveling or other crises. Meanwhile, The Salvation Army Shield of Hope in partnership with the City of Chicago is the nation’s first emergency homeless assessment and rapid-response center providing homeless families with placement within two weeks that best meets their immediate needs.

The history of Black History Month Black History Month, observed in February in the United States and Canada, and in October in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, is a dedicated time to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of Black people and to acknowledge the central role of Africans and African Americans in history. Its origins and evolution reflect a growing awareness and recognition of Black identities and histories, which were often marginalized or misrepresented in mainstream historical narratives. The genesis of Black History Month can be traced back to the early 20th century, with the efforts of Carter G. Woodson, a distinguished African American historian, author, and journalist, and the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Woodson, often referred to as the “Father of Black History,” was deeply concerned about the lack of attention given to Black achievements in American history books and the educational system. He believed that understanding African American history was crucial for the development of a positive identity among Black individuals and for the recognition of their contributions to American society by the wider population. In 1926, Woodson and the ASALH initiated the celebration of Negro History Week, which was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and Frederick Douglass on February 14, both dates that Black communities had celebrated together since the late 19th century. The week was designed to encourage the coordinated teaching of Black history in the nation’s public schools. The response was overwhelming, leading to the creation of Black history clubs, an increase in teacher interest, and the inclusion of African American content in textbooks. Over the years, Negro History Week gained momentum and widespread acceptance, laying the groundwork for the civil rights movements of the 1950s and 1960s. These movements further emphasized the importance of Black history and culture, pushing for more comprehensive and inclusive accounts of the American experience. The 1960s also witnessed a growing consciousness of Black identity and heritage, which contributed to a reevaluation of how African American history was represented. The transformation from a week to a month-long celebration began in the late 1960s. The first proposal for Black History

Thornton, IL – The Village of Thornton Historical Society will be presenting a program entitled: “The Untold Story of the Orphan Trains” a 30-minute video by author Michael T. Keene, on Monday, February 26, 7:00pm, at their museum located at 114 N. Hunter Street in Thornton. The late 1800s saw mass immigration to the United States. Due to sickness and poverty, many of these immigrants left behind orphaned children, over 30,000 alone in New York City. These orphans, dubbed “Street Rats” by the police, lived in alleyways, under stairs, and in piles of rubbish. Many were run over or died of starvation and exposure. Learn how New York City solved this problem by putting the children on trains that went out West. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Refreshments will be served after the program. We hope to see you there. Please email any questions to: thorntonilhs@gmail.com
Month was made by Black educators and the Black United Students at Kent State University in February 1969. The first celebration of Black History Month took place at Kent State one year later, in February 1970. This idea gained popularity and was recognized nationwide within a few years, especially within educational institutions and community organizations that sought to promote a deeper understanding of African American history. In 1976, as part of the United States Bicentennial, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, urging Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Since then, every American president has designated February as Black History Month, with a specific theme chosen by the ASALH annually to focus the public’s attention on different aspects of Black history and culture. The celebration of Black History Month has also expanded beyond the borders of the United States. In the United Kingdom, Black History Month was first celebrated in October 1987, organized as part of African Jubilee Year, initiated by Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, who served as a coordinator of special projects for the Greater London Council. The month was chosen to align with the Marcus Garvey celebrations and London Jubilee. Similarly, in Canada, Black History Month was officially recognized in December 1995, when the House of Commons unanimously adopted a motion to recognize February as Black History Month, following a motion introduced by the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honorable Jean Augustine. The observance of Black History Month has been instrumental in bringing to light the stories, struggles, and successes of Black individuals throughout history. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and contributions of Black communities, inspiring educational and cultural activities that aim to foster an understanding and appreciation of diversity and the rich tapestry of global histories influenced by people of African descent. The month not only honors historical figures and events but also highlights ongoing efforts towards racial justice and equality, emphasizing the importance of history in shaping our present and future.
What is Lent? The Lenten season, observed primarily in the Christian tradition, is a period of reflection, repentance, and spiritual preparation leading up to Easter Sunday, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lasting approximately 40 days, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. Here’s how the Lenten season is celebrated: 1. **Ash Wednesday:** Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, where many Christians attend church services to receive ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross. The ashes symbolize mortality and repentance, reminding believers of their need for forgiveness and renewal. It marks the start of the Lenten journey, inviting individuals to reflect on their faith and commit to spiritual disciplines. 2. **Fasting and Abstinence:** Fasting is a common practice during Lent, representing self-discipline and sacrifice. Many Christians choose to abstain from certain foods or activities as a way to focus on prayer, penance, and spiritual growth. Some may fast by giving up a favorite food or habit, while others may fast from social media or other distractions. Abstinence from meat on Fridays is also observed by many Catholics and other Christian denominations. 3. **Prayer:** Lent is a time of intensified prayer and meditation for Christians. Individuals may participate in daily devotions, attend special prayer services, or spend extra time in personal prayer and reflection. The goal is to deepen one’s relationship with God, seek guidance, and align one’s life with spiritual values. 4. **Almsgiving and Acts of Service:** Lent encourages acts of charity, compassion, and service towards others, particularly those in need. Christians are encouraged to practice generosity and kindness, whether through financial donations, volunteer work, or acts of solidarity with marginalized communities. Almsgiving is seen as a way to embody Christ’s love and compassion in the world. 5. **Attending Worship Services:** Throughout Lent, churches offer special worship services, including midweek services, Lenten concerts, and contemplative prayer gatherings. These services provide opportunities for communal worship, reflection on Scripture, and participation in the sacraments, such as Holy Communion. 6. **Stations of the Cross:** The Stations of the Cross are a series of 14 images or sculptures depicting Jesus Christ’s journey to the cross. Many churches hold special services or prayer walks where participants reflect on each station, meditating on Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. 7. **Easter Vigil and Holy Week:** Lent culminates in Holy Week, the final week leading up to Easter Sunday. Holy Week includes significant events such as Maundy Thursday (commemorating the Last Supper), Good Friday (observing Jesus’ crucifixion), and Holy Saturday (a day of anticipation before Easter Sunday). The Easter Vigil, held on Holy Saturday evening, celebrates Christ’s resurrection with special worship services and the lighting of the Paschal candle. Overall, the Lenten season is a time of spiritual renewal and preparation for Christians, inviting them to deepen their faith, seek reconciliation, and journey towards the joy of Easter.
