Josh Turner to Perform Appreciation Concert MCA Nashville recording artist, Josh Turner, is set to perform a First Responder Appreciation Concert at the Porter County Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 21. From the very start of his career through chart-topping hits like “Your Man,” “Would You Go With Me,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” and “All Over Me,” Turner has immersed himself in country music’s history and it’s iconic figures. For nearly two decades, he has been one of country music’s most recognizable voices, selling more than 8.5 million units and massing more than 2.5 billion global streams. The concert is a new addition to the MAAC Foundation’s annual First Responder Demonstrations & Appreciation Day held earlier that afternoon at the MAAC Campus. “We couldn’t think of a better way to expand our event and show appreciation for the brave men and women that choose to wear the uniform especially this year as we mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11,” says Celina Weatherwax, President of the MAAC Foundation. Tickets for the concert are on sale now for only $40 at www. maacfoundation.com. The gates will open at 6:00 p.m. CST at the fairgrounds, with the concert beginning at 8:00 p.m. CST. All seating will be general admission – bring a chair or blanket. No outside food or coolers will be allowed. All proceeds will support training for firefighters, EMS and law enforcement.

5 Most Common Unemployment Scams Americans Should Know A new study warns Americans about five unemployment scams being used as up to 50% of unemployment benefits are suspected of being stolen during the pandemic, as much as $400 billion. Illinois has the No. 10 highest level of unemployment currently at 7.1%. A record 14.8% of Americans were unemployed in April 2020. If the government had not provided financial assistance through the Cares Act, the economy may have plummeted worse than it did during the Great Depression. It is becoming clear, however, that large portions of that money is being stolen from Americans in need. California alone has reported $11 billion in fraudulent claims were paid mistakenly. SocialCatfish.com today released a study on Unemployment Payment Scams to Avoid using the latest data from the FBI, Bureau of Labor Statistics and state governments outlining the most common scams and how to avoid them. Last week, jobless claims rose to their highest levels in over a month. Twenty states have unemployment levels above 6% and six states are above 8% led by Hawaii, California, New York, New Mexico, and Connecticut and Nevada. Here are the 5 Most Common Unemployment Scams Americans Should Watch Out for: 1) Identity Theft: A scammer steals personal information from their victims such as full name, birthday, address, or social security number. Then they apply for unemployment benefits under their victims’ name. Victims are typically unaware until they get denied when they try to apply for unemployment themselves. They also are getting notices that they owe money and received less money during tax time as the IRS withheld money from the unemployment benefits which they never received. How to Avoid: Do not give personal information to anyone that you meet online or over the phone. Avoid adding personal information to your social media accounts, even a birthday can be used to drain your bank account. 2) Romance Scams: During COVID-19, many victims said they were tricked into sending their unemployment money to scammers. A record $304 million was stolen from victims seeking love in 2020. Scammers create fake profiles on dating apps and social media sites and make lonely victims feel loved. Once the victim trusts them, they begin asking for money.
Correction Due to an editing error last weeks edition of The Shopper was dated at June 6th. The correct date for the paper should have read June 23rd. We are sorry for any confusion.
How to Avoid: Do not send money to anyone you meet online. If the person will not meet or do a video chat, they are likely a scammer. Find out if they are who they say they are by doing a reverse lookup by entering their name, phone, email, or photo. 3) Spoofing: A rapidly growing scam in 2021. Spoofing is when scammers create VOIP phone numbers, choose the state that they want their call to come from and present like a trusted institution. Victims are reporting fake bank calls saying their account has been hacked and their personal information is needed to “verify and protect” their account. The scammers use that information to apply for unemployment benefits under their victim’s name. How to Avoid: If a company calls you asking for information, hang up and call them back yourself to ensure you are speaking with the actual company. 4) Investment Fraud: Scammers are posting fake investment opportunities on social media promising enormous returns with little risk. They are also creating emails about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with phishing links that will steal personal information when clicked. If you do invest, you will never see your money again. They are asking for your investment in the form of Bitcoin, gift cards or wire transfers which are harder to trace, and banks cannot return. How to Avoid: Do not give any money or information to someone seeking an investment until you have thoroughly vetted the people and the organization. 5) Sextortion: Scammers are creating fake profiles on dating apps using explicit images of girls from OnlyFans or Snapchat. The “girl” connects with a man, moves the conversation to text message, and exchanges explicit photos. Once the scammer has the photo, they blackmail the victim saying if they do not send money, the photo will be sent to the persons friends and family and it will be posted it to the Internet. No amount of money paid will ever be good enough, the scammer keeps demanding more. How to Avoid: Do not send explicit photos to anyone you do not know. If you believe you are the victim of an unemployment scam, report it to the Department of Labor at https://www.dol.gov/agencies/eta/ UIIDtheft
