Just like the rest of us, kids’ screen time has skyrocketed since the pandemic; and while it’s surely been a major win for young ones during lockdown, it’s more likely that parents are benefitting more from the digital distraction...

While in pre-pandemic times, parents would often limit screentime and encourage their kids to spend more time outdoors, it appears spending time online, such as gaming, has brought with it invaluable breathing room for parents who continue to work from home, in which they attempt to do their jobs while running a household.

Solitaired.com ran a poll of 3,000 parents, revealing that parents in Illinois are allowing their kids to spend over 40% more time online now, as compared to before the pandemic.

When it comes to online gaming, almost half admit they’ve changed their attitudes towards it since the start of the pandemic, and are seeing it as a positive addition to their kids’ lives, rather than something that’s an unhealthy obsession.

Of course, it’s important to balance screen time with activities like exercise and getting outdoors.

For many kids who have had to do these activities alone over the past year due to lockdowns, online gaming has often been their main social connection to the outside world.

When asked what benefits parents think are provided by online gaming, 9% agreed that it’s a boost to their kids’ reading skills. Another 9% agree that it’s good for visual-spatial skills, 38% said it assists with problem-solving skills; provides social connections with similar interests (16%); boost to creativity (16%) and an

optimistic 13% feel it could turn into a career.

Perhaps they believe their kid could be the next PewDiePie, who has over 110 million subscribers on YouTube!

Over half of parents (56%) admit that lockdowns would have been harder without their kids having access to online games. But that aside, it’s nice to hear that 55% of parents say they’ve bonded more with their children since the start of the pandemic. Indeed, through the course of history, parents have often struggled to relate to teenagers. And spending more time with them over the past year, it would be assumed they would at the very least pick up some words and phrases on how they communicate with friends, particularly when it comes to online. Apparently not, according to the survey. When quizzed on online slang and gaming lingo, they performed partciularly poorly. Just 31% of Illinois parents were able to understand the meaning of words like ‘Lit’ [amazing, cool or exciting], ‘Dope [cool or awesome]’, ‘Thirsty’ [trying to get attention], ‘Snatched’ [looking good, perfect or fashionable] or ‘Shook’ [to be shocked or shaken up] - although higher the national average of 27%.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA Jesus says in Chapter 9 of the Biblical book of Luke: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

What does Jesus mean when he says we must take up our cross?

When Jesus carried the cross through Jerusalem to the place where he would ultimately die, the cross was certainly a physical burden for Him. But Jesus promises us in Matthew 11:30 that his “yoke is easy and [his] burden is light,” so Jesus isn’t talking about a heavy physical or mental burden he’s asking us to bear — because he’s already borne the weight of our sin.

The cross in Jesus’ day was used for one purpose: death. Dying on a cross was an agonizingly painful and public way to die. The same way the cross was used to put Jesus and others to death thousands of years ago, we are also to put to death our sinful thoughts, words, and actions.

Picking up our cross every day means actively killing the sin in our lives on a daily basis.

We wield this death-bringing power not of our own strength.

Because of Jesus’ sin-killing death and resurrection, we have the power of the Holy Spirit (who is God Himself) to stare our sin in the face and choose a better way — God’s way.

The English Puritan John Owen once said, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.” Through the power of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, we have the power to daily take up our cross and crucify our sinfulness. Jesus has made the ultimate sacrifice and given us power over our sin. Now, He calls us to use that power to sacrifice our sins every day.

Illinois Family Celebrating Daughter’s New Heart and Second Chance at Life July is going to be a month of celebration and joy for COTA’s Bean and Featherstone Families of Central Illinois. It was five years ago on July 11th when (then) 16-year-old Hannah Bean suffered sudden cardiac arrest and was rushed to the local hospital. No one in Hannah’s family had any reason to suspect the teenager had been living with a rare disease -- until they nearly lost her to cardiac arrest on that fateful day.

Her mother, Liz, remembers the day in May 2000 her sweet Hannah entered this world as a beautiful baby girl. The day the baby was to be discharged to home, her heart rate appeared to be very low. Hannah was kept an extra night for monitoring because no infections or other symptoms were found and then released the next day.

After six months of cardiology care and checkups it was determined Hannah’s heart was functioning properly. Hannah grew up as a very active girl who loved to jump on the trampoline, chase her pets, hang out with her two older sisters and play softball with her friends. Hannah lived life to the fullest each and every day … until right after celebrating her 16th birthday.

Here is how Hannah’s life took an unexpected turn, in her words: “2016, the year I thought would be just like the movies when thinking about my 16th birthday.

After turning 16 in May, the first two months were just what I dreamed about. Then came the day when my world, and my dreams, flipped completely upside down.

July 11th was a day full of singing and dancing because I was attending a summer musical/acting camp that I had been going to since the age of 8. It was tech week for our production and I came home for the night absolutely exhausted.

I really wanted to take a nap but my stepfather asked that I stay awake so we could go out to dinner. Not one of us in the house that afternoon knew that my ‘staying awake’ is the reason I am alive today. Around 6:30 pm my stepfather heard a loud thud from my room. He and my older sister, Erika, rushed in and found me on the floor gasping for air. 911 was called and my stepfather was told to do Hands Only CPR. The Decatur Fire Department arrived, performed CPR and used an AED to restart my heart. I was transported to our local hospital to get my heart stabilized. Then I was airlifted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

I spent the next two weeks in the ICU where the cardiology team worked nonstop to try and figure out my extremely rare arrhythmias. On July 22nd, they implanted a defibrillator and a few days later I was finally able to return home, but my life had completely changed in so many ways.

My family and I attempted to get our lives back to normal, but I continued to struggle. In March 2017 it was discovered I was in heart failure.

More testing was done and the cause was finally discovered -- I was diagnosed with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy called Danon Disease.

The implanted defibrillator paced my heart on many occasions. As fall 2017 approached it was clear I was declining once again. After a grueling week of meetings and tests back in St. Louis, I was officially listed with UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) for a heart transplant on September 15, 2017 -- just a little over a year from the day I had a cardiac arrest in my bedroom. I was in high school and tried to feel ‘normal’ and

do ‘normal high school things,’ but I had a PICC line and carried around medicine that was constantly pumped in my arm. I still attended high school when I could, went to my homecoming dance and spent most of my time doing ‘teenager things.’ But on December 4th I became very ill and had to return to St. Louis to be admitted.

My heart arrhythmias were gaining intensity and there were no guarantees what might happen next. My family was terrified for me to go back home more than two hours away, My cardiology team decided I should remain at St. Louis

and in mid-November, Hannah’s family officially became part of the COTA Family.

“When I first heard about COTA I was on medical leave from work and was quite worried about how we would care for Hannah financially,” Liz said. “From my first call to COTA I knew we were going to be able to trust this organization.

With COTA being a nonprofit organization, contributions would be tax-deductible to the full extent of the law, the funds would not be considered income for our family, and Hannah would be able to receive COTA’s support and guidance

Children’s through the weekend and go home on Monday. But that did not happen because on Saturday, December 9th we got the call there was a healthy new heart waiting to be transplanted in me!”

While extremely worried about Hannah’s heart failure and the sudden turn the family’s life had taken, Mom Liz remembers all of the questions and stress including the issue of what this journey was going to cost long-term even with the good healthcare insurance they were fortunate to have.

During the fall months of 2017 when it seemed a heart transplant was Hannah’s best chance at long-term survival, a Transplant Financial Coordinator at St. Louis Children’s Hospital suggested Liz reach out to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) to learn more about how they might be able to help ease some of the family’s stress.

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) uniquely understands that parents who care for a child or young adult before, during and after a life-saving transplant have enough to deal with, so COTA’s model shifts the responsibility for fundraising to a team of trained volunteers.

COTA is a 501(c)3 charity so all contributions to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law, and COTA funds are available for a lifetime.

A COTA fundraising specialist trained the family’s group of volunteers in Hannah’s hometown.

The COTA staff member talked to their neighbors and family members about COTA’s fundraising process and shared information about fundraising templates, fundraising guidance and the no-cost website they would be provided. The team got to work planning fundraisers for COTA in honor of Team Hannah B to help with mounting transplant-related expenses, and the family could solely focus on Hannah, which Liz says was truly a gift.

The best gift of all Hannah’s first Christmas with her new heart was getting to spend it at home.

Sixteen days after undergoing a heart transplant, Hannah was at home celebrating with her family. Liz blogged on the COTA-provided website,

Liz called COTA on November 7, 2017, to learn more about COTA as an organization and as a potential avenue of support for the family. She spent time reviewing COTA’s online and printed materials and discussed how they might be able to move forward with the organization that had come so highly recommended. The family completed and submitted the necessary paperwork

“Hannah enjoyed Christmas morning where we all shared lots of happy tears, as well as sad ones for the donor family. I could not get them off my mind. We held a moment of silence that morning for the donor and will continue to do so on holidays in the future. During the winter months that followed Hannah stayed inside a lot due to influenza fears. She returned to high school on a limited basis in January. During the next few months, Hannah picked out a prom dress, attended prom, painted several canvases (her passion), hung out with friends, sang in choir concerts, met Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and talked to high school students about how organ donation saved her life.”

Hannah graduated Gold Delta from high school on May 19, 2018. She graduated with honors after surviving cardiac arrest, heart failure and a heart transplant. During those days of looking back and reflecting on Hannah’s amazing journey, Liz created a COTA website blog post focusing on some numbers: “Since July 2016 it is astounding to think about what our child has been through: 1 Life Flight to St. Louis Children’s Hospital 20-plus Car Trips to St. Louis Children’s Hospital Four hospitalizations with three stays in the ICU Three PICC lines One Central Broviac Line 20-plus Cardiology Clinic Visits 15-plus Echocardiograms 30-plus Blood Draws Seven Cardiac Caths Three Heart Biopsies 10-plus Chest X-rays Seven different Physician Specialists 85 Days on the Heart Waiting List Liz blogged, “These are just a few that come to mind in a relatively short timeframe. Hannah has endured more trials than any teenager should. Yet she never stops. We are hopeful for her future. For so long she fought to survive, and we all had to walk with her through a very dark valley to get to the top of the mountain where we are at today.”

Hannah continues to do great. She just celebrated her 21st birthday and is thriving. She is living on her own and is excited to share she is in a happy relationship and is raising two fur babies.

Hannah is currently studying to get her associates degree in art and continues to express her creativity by in a variety of mediums. She still takes multiple medications, but says it is a small price to pay for being able to live happily and healthy.

“It is truly remarkable,” Liz said. “Hannah has a very rare disease that none of us knew about until the day she experienced cardiac arrest five years ago this month. Things happened so quickly. COTA was not just there for us; they were there in a way that was, and is, so kind and supportive. Having COTA on our journey has been a huge relief and has helped us to keep moving forward. Transplant-related expenses are immense -- even beyond what insurance pays. As a mother, I have peace of mind knowing COTA’s support and guidance are with Hannah now … and will be for a lifetime.”

Average Illinoisan has first alcoholic drink less than three hours into summer vacation For most summer-loving Americans, this year’s upcoming vacation might mean dipping their toes in the water for the first time or snoozing on a sunbed under crystal clear skies with their phone on silent. Some might join in a game of beach volleyball nearby while others will be scouting out the nearest bar to spend their summer days.

From the moment the trip begins, there are drinking opportunities at nearly every stop along the way - from faux Irish airport pubs, an inflight alcoholic beverage, or the hotel room mini bar on arrival. With so many options available, it appears that many vacationers from Illinois aren’t willing to wait too long for their first ice-cold beer or cocktail. That’s according to a survey by RiverOaksTreatment.com, a leading provider of addiction treatment services, who questioned 3,000 drinkers (aged 21+) to determine how long they wait, on average, to have their first drink when on vacation.

The survey revealed that the average Illinoisan admits that they have their first alcoholic beverage within three hours into their summer vacation (2 hours and 54 mins, to be precise). It can be tempting to start off the day with a cheeky mimosa at brunch, however, it’s just as easy to raid the mini-bar before the clock even strikes midday! While day drinking isn’t necessarily better or worse than doing so in the evening, it can

lead to more noticeable functional impairment, such as the inability to interact coherently with other people or drive a car. Both of these tasks may have more obvious social consequences during the day as compared to nighttime.

The survey also found that more than 1 in 5 (22%) respondents will be drinking more during this year’s summer vacation as compared to previous years as a way to let off steam after a tough year brought on by the pandemic.

It seems alcohol-filled summer breaks are not an uncommon practice for many people – perhaps making it through the first half of a stressful new year calls for celebration. Nearly a third (29%) of respondents admit that alcohol is an integral part of summer vacations and, in fact, 36% say an alcohol-free vacation would be a deal-breaker.

Interestingly, 48% of respondents indicated that they’d be concerned about adhering to any social distancing measures this summer. If you’re drinking at a pool bar or by the beach, you may make friends with other vacationers and after one too many, it’s easy to forget social distancing rules altogether. Considering that coronavirus is still a very real risk, despite the significant number of vaccinated Americans, this could prove disastrous in terms of infection rates after the break is over – particularly for non-vaccinated citizens and communities.

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Now that we’ve gained at least some space from the COVID-19 pandemic, summer travel is heating up. But while you might be eager to hit the road, you won’t want your investments to take a vacation – you need them to work hard for you consistently. But how can you make this happen?

Here are some ideas: Know your destination. “If you don’t know where you want to go, then it doesn’t matter which path you take.” This bit of wisdom, paraphrased from the classic children’s book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, may be appropriate for, say, hikers exploring a new landscape. But as an investor, it matters a great deal which path you take. If you only dabble in investing, occasionally putting some money into one investment or another, it will be difficult to build a portfolio that’s consistently working in your best interest. It’s important to create a long-term investment strategy based on where you want to go in life – that is, how long you plan to work, what sort of retirement lifestyle you envision, and so on.

Match goals with investments. Some investments are designed to achieve certain goals.

To illustrate: When you contribute to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan, you’re investing for one specific, longterm goal: a comfortable retirement. While you can tap into these accounts for other purposes – though doing so might incur immediate taxes and penalties – they are designed to provide you with income during your retirement years. Similarly, you may have other investments for other purposes, such as a 529 education savings plan. Here’s the key point: Goals-based investing, by its nature, can help ensure your portfolio is always working on your behalf, in the way you intended.

Invest for growth. Ideally, hard work produces results, and one of the main results you want from your investments is growth – that is, you want your investments to appreciate in value so they can eventually help you meet your goals. But if you are overconcentrated in vehicles such as certificates of deposit (CDs) and government securities, you may end up lowering your growth potential. That’s not to say that CDs and Treasury bills are in some sense “lazy.” They can provide you with income and help you reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. But to achieve most of your goals, you’ll need a reasonable number of growth-oriented investments working for you, with the exact percentage based on your needs and life stages.

Check your progress. How else can you ensure your investments aren’t just taking it easy? By checking up on them. If you follow a buy-and-hold strategy, your portfolio shouldn’t require many changes if it already reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. MIKE BUDER How do we navigate the future? A challenging question and most of us have our own thoughts. We now live in the information age where a lot of good and bad data is at our fingertips, literally, at the touch of our phone or laptop. We just need to filter through it to determine what is good and what is bad.

People of different professions have different perspectives and concerns on this question too, be it psychiatrists, economists, small and large business owners, landlords and even Realtors. And let us not forget the politicians whose perspectives and agenda can largely be driven by which side of the isle they are on. I always try to look at things objectively and take the positive approach, no matter how difficult and complicated that might be. Let’s consider the phrase “new normal”.

What exactly is “new normal”, what of it will remain in the future and what will fade away? This rhetorical term was stated by the same politicians and news networks over and over. Their messages have been mixed and convoluted at best. Wear a mask, wear double masks, don’t wear a mask, eating inside vs eating outside, same household gathering, not gathering, singing in church ok, singing not ok, I could go on and on.

One message remained constant – Wash your hands! And isn’t it rather disturbing that we actually need to have that sign in our public restrooms? Having been bombarded with all this conflicting information the last 15 months, these very same politicians are now telling us that after a certain date we can forgo masks, distancing and capacity restrictions (provided you are vaccinated) because everything after that date will be fine!

REALLY? People have been scared to death.

We are terrified for anyone to see us sneeze or cough for fear of alarming them – is it an allergy, a cold, or is it the dreaded COVID-19?

I have watched certain states lock down way longer than others. My radar and red flag go up when politicians start offering bribes, incentives, and lottery ticket opportunities to take the vaccine. When I look closely at pictures of politicians and celebrities getting the vaccine, I am not convinced the jab really went in. Call me suspicious but all this gives me reasons to pause. Admittedly, I have many questions and doubts, one being if the vaccine is so effective, why are those that got vaccinated so concerned about being with people that have not? Aren’t they protected? An annual vaccine? What about the potential serious side effects or even mortal consequences? Are there long-term side effects? These are just a few questions that are swirling in my head, after all, as of the date I’m writing this column the FDA has only approved the current vaccines as EUA (Emergency Use Authorization), and the injections are “investigational products”.

My Christian faith and my way of thinking on this goes along with my always having to be honest and straightforward. Anyone that knows me or has worked with me knows that my client’s best interest is always first and foremost in my agency relationships. If a client cannot accept my candor, then I am not the Realtor for them. I do my best not to judge others for their opinions and hope they would return that effort when I state my truths. Dr. Marcus Belin Named First Black President of Illinois Principals Association The Illinois Principals Association is proud to announce Dr. Marcus Belin, principal of Huntley High School in Huntley as association president for the 2021-2022 school term. Dr. Belin also becomes the first Black president of the Illinois Principals Association.

Dr. Belin has most recently been recognized as one of three Digital Principals of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). At Huntley High School,

Belin has overseen three years of Huntley’s blended competency-based learning program for in-person and online learning to enable students to master competencies in core subject areas.

The school has also used technology to engage students in social-emotional learning lessons in topics such as anxiety and mental health.

Dr. Belin has been a member of the Illinois Principals Association since 2013. During this time, he has served as state legislative chairperson, Kishwaukee Region Membership chair, and Central Illinois Valley Region Membership chair.

He began his career in education in 2010 as a fifth- and sixth-grade social studies teacher at Quest Charter Academy Middle School in Peoria and continued at Quest Charter Academy High School as dean of students/assistant principal through 2015. Dr. Belin later served as assistant principal of Dunlap High School in Dunlap and became principal of Huntley High School in 2018.

Dr. Marcus Belin resides in Huntley with his wife, Monique Belin, an elementary instructional coach in Huntley District #158, and their three children, Maliyah, Makenzie, and Mekhi. Dr. Belin received his Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and master’s degree in Education Administration from Bradley University, and his Doctoral degree from National Lewis University.

Answer: While many real estate markets continue to burn hot, this is a great time for sellers of special, unusual, or unique properties to jump in and cash out.

Sellers who “paid too much” for their real estate in the last boom or who ended up with a budget-breaking construction or renovation project that priced their home out of preboom markets.

Sellers who did not apply the “location, location, location” value mantra and bought on a “lesser” street, a less popular neighborhood, or in a less-urban community where properties typically appreciate in value more slowly.

Sellers who live on busy streets or on the edge of commercial areas.

Sellers who don’t want to invest the time and thousands of dollars it would take to modernize their home. This includes those who bought a home they loved, except for the necessary renovation to solve the too small kitchen, the missing main bedroom bath or

lack of play space. They never did the renovation to solve the problem and they won’t do it now.

In Covid times, many potential sellers are holding back from listing because they want to see how their job situation resolves itself, they want more choice shopping for their next home, or because of a wide range of personal reasons. When listings are low in many areas, buyers who can’t wait are forced to broaden their search and compromise on their “must haves.”

Properties like yours may not always sell for over-asking price, but they do have a much better chance to sell in this low supply, high demand market.

Survey Finds 4 in 10 Employers Will Fire Workers Who Won’t Return On-Site Digital.com, a leading independent review website for small business online tools, products, and services, has published a recent survey report on how American companies plan to operate in a post-pandemic workplace. The survey generated responses from 1500 small business owners and focused on remote work experience during the COVID-19 pandemic and plans for resuming in-person work.

Research findings indicate that 4 out of 10 employers will fire workers who won’t return to the workplace full-time. Nearly 50% of the survey respondents said most job functions require inperson attendance, and 45% expressed concerns about a decline in employee productivity while working remotely. Business owners also cited other disadvantages to working from home, such as low employee morale, increased lateness due to oversleeping and distractions, and increased miscommunication among staff.

In contrast, only 10% of employers will make remote work mandatory, and 17% said employees will follow a hybrid schedule of onsite and remote work. Survey results also show that most business owners are willing to consider feedback from employees about work schedules. Sixty-nine percent of employers state that they have asked or plan to ask workers for their input on post-

pandemic work structure.

“One critical takeaway from this survey is that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to postpandemic workplace strategies,” says Digital’s small business expert Dennis Consorte. “Many business owners want mandatory in-person attendance. They need to get direct feedback from workers, mitigate fears about the virus, and demonstrate empathy about other concerns before making such an impactful decision.”

According to the report, 42% of businesses will require staff to get vaccinated before returning to work onsite.

Employers are also in favor of other safety protocols, such as mask mandates and social distancing. Fifty-five percent of small businesses will require workers to wear a mask, while 52% will prohibit or limit close interactions between employees.

Digital.com’s research team developed this report to share insightful data on workplace trends in a post-pandemic world. I often find them in my mailbox. Offers for credit cards. They come with points or hotel/ car rental discounts. They come with perks and advantages. One thing I’ve not seen is a clear warning. Not one has come with a bold-typed, attention-getting outline of the personal costs you might incur when you decide you would like to take advantage of the ease of purchase that using a credit card can provide. The company that provides you this opportunity is a business and it is helpful to keep this in mind.

Businesses are designed to benefit (profit) the owner while providing goods or a service to the user. Credit card companies do exactly that. Although teaching the responsible use of resources or delayed gratification for long term gains isn’t a credit company’s goal, these might be lessons you and I learn as credit card users. You might have a friend or family member who has a story to tell about how uncontrolled use of credit has negatively impacted their lives. Maybe that person is you and you can tell your own story of how you learned the benefits of saving for something instead of purchasing on credit.

A credit card is defined as a revolving line of credit. The card company is letting you use some of their money and you are promising to pay it back by a certain date. The money you are using to pay for your ‘right now’ purchase belongs to the credit card company and they have set the terms for you to use that money for a certain amount of time. If you pay it all back by the set date it has worked well for you.

The difficulty for you as the consumer arises when you are not able to settle your account balance by the due date. With interest, fees, fines and a line of credit that doesn’t expire, you might find yourself getting farther and farther behind. Your financial concerns may negatively impact your mental health, your physical health, and relationships with your family and friends. You might eventually find yourself in a position where you are unable even to meet minimum monthly payments and negatively affect your credit score. This may impact your ability to get future credit or make mortgage or vehicle loans more costly to you.

Understanding the terms and conditions BEFORE you get started will ensure that your credit card experience works for you and doesn’t turn into a very expensive lesson.

THE BILL FOR $3,197 DISAPPEARED! WOODROW WILCOX

On June 17, 2021, our office received a fax from a medical service provider about a bill to our client for $3,197. The bill disappeared.

Here is why.

On April 23, 2021, I reviewed the bill to our client and sent a letter warning the medical service company that I suspected it had billed our client directly rather than file the claim with Medicare. If it did do that, that would be a serious violation of the biller’s contract with Medicare. They could get into a lot of expensive trouble.

The fax that we received on June 17 stated that the charges were removed from collections and are now pending Medicare’s ruling.

As long as Medicare approves the services as being medically necessary, the bill will be paid

by Medicare and the Medicare supplement

insurance policy that our agency sold to the client.

The Medicare system is far from perfect.

When medical bill problems arise, our agency demonstrates that we care about our clients by “going the extra mile” to fix such problems and avoid financial losses for our clients. We do this FREE OF CHARGE to our clients. As far as I know, our insurance agency is the only one in the Chicago area that offers such help.

“This past year has been quite challenging and taxing to our self-esteem. We didn’t have a lot of chances to build mastery or experience a sense of belonging. Loneliness and isolation were part of daily life. When left to this kind of isolation it can wear on our self worth and value,” says Sell.

Here’s Dr. Teralyn Sell’s top 4 tips on how to talk to ourselves to promote a better relationship with our reflection: Tip #1: Focus on your favorite thing Find something about yourself that you love, or are just ‘ok’ with, and build from there. For instance, if you enjoy your eye color, focus on that in the mirror and continually tell yourself that you love them.

Tip #2: Create a positive mantra and declare it Write something positive about yourself, or even a small goal, right on your bathroom mirror. As you brush your teeth, repeat the mantra. It can be as simple as ‘I’m ok’. Once you feel you have that mastered, create a new one.

Tip #3: Out with the negative, in with the positive Whenever you compare yourself to others, or find yourself circling the negative rabbit hole about yourself, engage in thought stopping. This is when you literally catch yourself thinking and then say ‘STOP!’ and rework the negative language or say your positive mantra instead.

Tip #4: Ditch the mirror altogether and just focus on your thoughts Honestly, mirrors are tough for many people.

They can be quite triggering and demoralizing in some cases. If that is your case, you might want to ditch the mirrors altogether and, instead, focus on keeping a positive mindset through journaling.

Indiana law aims to help fight cyberattacks During the recently concluded Indiana General Assembly, legislators unanimously passed HEA 1169, a law that goes into effect today, which requires all political subdivisions and state agencies to report cybersecurity incidents to the Indiana Office of Technology (IOT).

“Citizen and business data is at risk due to cybercriminals and constant cyberattacks. The level and number of attacks is increasing in the public sector at an alarming rate,” said Indiana Chief Information Officer Tracy Barnes. “This law allows IOT to track the attacks, but most importantly share information across government in Indiana for increased awareness and protection. While this will not stop attacks, it will give us understanding to the types of attacks that are being made. That, in turn, will give us the ability to go on the offense and proactively warn others and to recommend precautions.”
