Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project The Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project hosted the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association (NWIPA) for a paddling event on the Little Cal on Saturday, July 16, putting in at the boat launch at Beaubien Woods Forest Preserve on the far-edge of the city of Chicago. We had around twenty members from the NWIPA and from the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project in kayaks, as well as two canoes to accommodate Professor Larry McClellan and Tom Shepherd, lead organizer. It was a perfect day for the paddle- partly cloudy, and not hot at all. Many birds flew overhead, or were atop the water on the river. We also saw a Northern water snake on a log in the river. Prof. McClellan gave a presentation from a canoe on the river about the Underground Railroad “station” that existed at the spot that now is home to Chicago’s Finest Marina, at roughly 134th Place and St. Lawrence Avenue in this remote corner of the city. The Ton Farm Site was recently accepted to be listed on the National Park Service’s “Network to Freedom Program,” as one of Chicago’s only two sites that have achieved the distinguished designation. The Ton family, and other abolitionists in the region, were instrumental in assisting “Freedom Seekers”- escaped slaves from southern states- that came through this area on their journeys toward liberation in the northern states and Canada. The Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project- a 501(c)3 non-profit organization -has recently received a grant that will allow for the creation and installation of signs, markers, and other improvements at the site that depict the stories of both the Freedom Seekers, as well as the local abolitionists that assisted them. It is a remarkable, little-known bit of local history.

South Suburban College Awarded Grant to Support Early Childhood Education South Suburban College (SSC) was awarded a $847,867.68 grant by the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB). SSC is working with colleges across the State of Illinois under the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity Act to provide support for new students in the field of early childhood education while assisting incumbent workers to enroll in and complete degree or certificate programs. SSC offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Early Childhood Education in addition to Level II and Level III certificate options. The program is geared toward those interested in a career working with children from birth to 8 years old. “We are very excited to receive this grant at SSC,” said Anna Helwig, Ph.D., Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “We have hired an early childhood education coach who will be the conduit between the institution and navigators who work directly with regional early childhood centers.” This coach will begin employment at South Suburban College on August 1, 2022. In addition to hiring support staff, the grant will also be utilized to update classroom technology and provide students studying early childhood education with laptops to borrow to enhance their learning experience. These SSC students will also have

Advantage

access to apply for special emergency funds, a debt relief program and stipend to be administered once they achieve their academic goal of attaining a degree or certificate with a concentration in early childhood education. A key goal of the 3-year grant will be to streamline, coordinate, and improve the accessibility of degree completion pathways to benefit those working in and served by the industry in addition to employers of early childhood educators. A virtual open house highlighting the early childhood education concentration at SSC will take place on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Details about program requirements, pathway agreements with four-year institutions, scholarship information and more will be addressed. Those looking to begin a career in early childhood education or advance their current profession are required to register for the open house at: https://bit.ly/3OmJYwx. For additional information about the grant, please contact Anna Helwig, Ph.D., at (708) 596-2000, ext. 5706, or email ahelwig@ssc.edu. The South Suburban College Main Campus is located at 15800 South State Street South Holland, Illinois. Our mission is to Serve our Students and the Community through lifelong learning.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My mother is in the process of selling her home. She noticed the neighbor on her left has taken the liberty of eliminating the strip of dirt that lies along the property line and her foundation by pouring concrete all the way the length of the driveway even around the gas meter line and covering her bathroom drain clean-out access. He claims that my father gave him permission. She knows this is a lie and his reply was, “I know where the property line is; just mind your own business.” I visited him the following day and said that if he had nothing from my father in writing, then that concrete must go. If he does not act I said I’ll hire someone to remove the concrete at his expense. He said to me, “Like I said to your mother I know where the property line is; you better stop this harassment or else.” My response was, “I have a copy of the original survey report that lists all linear measurements from area landmarks. If you think that the property line is the foundation of our house

review your estate plans once in a while to see if they need to be modified. • Not updating beneficiary designations – Every so often, you may want to review the beneficiary designations on your life insurance policies, investment accounts and retirement assets. As mentioned, changes in your life, such as remarriage and the addition of new children, may affect your beneficiaries. Beneficiary designations are powerful and can even supersede your will, so you’ll want to update them as needed. Also, if you have a 529 education savings plan, you’ll want to name a successor owner – someone who can take over your 529 if you were to pass away. • Not re-registering assets placed in a trust – A living trust offers you many potential benefits, such as the ability to bypass the time-consuming and highly public process of probate when it’s time to settle your estate. However, just establishing the trust, by itself, may be insufficient – you likely also need to re-register assets, such as your investments, so they are officially owned by the trust, not by you. This is essential for the trust to work as you intended. Here’s one other mistake – not getting the help you need. Estate planning can be complex, so you’ll want to work with an attorney, and possibly with your financial advisor and tax professional, too. By avoiding key mistakes and working with a qualified team of professionals, you can create and maintain an estate plan that will help you leave the legacy you desire. You cannot tear up the concrete and then send a bill to the neighbor. What you can do is go to court and have a judge require that the concrete be removed at the neighbor’s expense. When many people hear the words “estate planning,” they assume it’s just for the wealthy. But that’s not the case because everyone can benefit from an estate plan. And when you’re creating one, you’ll want to avoid some common mistakes. Before we look at those mistakes, let’s go over what estate planning is designed to accomplish. Essentially, an estate plan allows you to pass on your assets in the way you desire. But it can also specify other actions, such as naming someone to care for your minor children if you were no longer around. In creating an estate plan, several key documents are involved, including a will, a trust, a financial power of attorney and a medical power of attorney or a health care directive. Now, let’s consider a few estate-planning mistakes: • Not communicating your plans. You’ll need to inform your family about whom you’ve chosen as executor – the individual who will administer your estate – and whom you’ve named as the trustee – the person who will manage your trust’s assets. (You can also choose a trust company to handle this duty.) And to help avoid unpleasant surprises when your estate is being settled, consider letting your children or other close relatives know who will be receiving what. • Not reviewing your plans periodically – Once you create your estate plans, don’t forget about them. Over time, your personal situation may change – you may experience a remarriage or bring in new children. Your interests may change, too – perhaps you’ll become deeply involved in supporting a favorite charitable organization. Given these and other potential changes, you’ll want to

JOSH BOOTSMA Do you ever wonder how God could possibly love you when you think of all the dishonest, hateful, and unloving things you’ve done in your life? If so, consider this: Abraham, who God promised to be the father of many nations, lied, saying that Sarah wasn’t his wife because he was afraid a foreign king might kill him otherwise. Moses, who God chose to lead His people out of slavery in Egypt, grew frustrated with God and was not allowed to enter the land promised to God’s people. Rahab, who as an act of faith hid Israelite spies in the city of Jericho, had made her living as a prostitute. David, who the Bible calls “a man after [God’s] own heart,” impregnated a married woman and had her husband killed on the battlefield. Solomon, who God made the wisest king of his day, accumulated 700 wives and 300 concubines and sought after wealth, despite all that God had already given him. Esther, the queen God tasked with saving His people from mass genocide, slept with the Persian king to gain his favor. Peter, of whom Jesus said, “On this rock I will build my church,” denied that he knew his savior three times over in a misguided attempt at self-preservation. Paul, who shepherded many early churches, made a living persecuting Christians up until his conversion. Guess what? You’re not the first to commit terrible sins. But rather than give us a free pass to sin, these stories provide a powerful testimony of the power of God’s forgiveness and his divine purposes. Through Jesus Christ his Son, God offers salvation to each one of us, a salvation that replaces our dark brokenness with his perfect righteousness. This reflection is inspired by “The Dirt,” a song by The Collection. Josh Bootsma Member, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

THE HEAT INDEX, also known as the apparent temperature, is what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature. Urban areas often experience higher temperatures during the summer, referred to as “Urban Heat Island.” This is due to buildings, roads, and other infrastructures absorbing solar energy, resulting in higher temperatures. Paul is survived by his wife, Betty (Wiersma), his children Scott (Dawn), Dave (Amy), Tami, and late Teri (late Tom) Kerns. Adored grandfather of Candice (David) Van Drunen, Jori (Joe) Vroom, Laci (Max) Van Dam, Isaac, Desi Kerns, Dillon Kerns, Grant, Will, Adam and Gise, and great grandfather to Parker and Beckham. Paul was born in South Holland, IL, and attended high school in Mishawaka, IN. After high school Paul joined the Air Force and was stationed in Korea. Upon returning home, he met the love of his life, Betty who he was married to for 64 years. Paul worked for his father and later owned Gibson Chevrolet. Paul enjoyed traveling around the world early in his life and loved the Florida sun when he retired. Throughout his life he rode horses, drove buggies, raised chickens and always had at least one faithful German Shepherd by his side. He delighted in competing with his horse and buggy filled with his grandchildren in the Lake County Fair. Paul not only served his country, but also served at his church, Faith Church (South Holland/Dyer). He was a church plant committee member, a deacon, an elder, a small group leader (for the horse-lovers Bible study), and an usher for many years. His cheerful personality, positive attitude and Christ-loving spirit made people feel comfortable. A memorial visitation will be held Thursday, July 28, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 7:00 p.m. at Faith Church, 100 W. 81st Ave. Dyer, IN with Scott Gibson officiating. Burial will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery – Elwood, IL. Memorial contributions may be given to Evangelical Child and Family Agency (1530 N. IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS In the Matter of the Marriage of Keita King and Kevin Estelle Case # 19d630584 Persuant to 735 ILCS 5/2-206 - service by publication: affidavit; mailing certificate, Keita King, on oath states as to Defendant Kevin Estelle that defendant cannot be ascertained after diligent inquiry.

In the South Suburbs of Chicago as well as many other parts of the country the lender’s appraisal becomes the litmus test to the price negotiated between the buyer and the seller. Fair market price is normally determined when a seller and a buyer who aren’t under duress negotiate and agree on a contract price for the sale of a property. If the buyer is cash and doesn’t need a lender then that’s it. In most cases, an appraisal isn’t done at this point, because the buyer and seller agree on the value of the property. If the buyer does need a lender, as most do, then the bank has to have a way to document the market value. That’s where the appraisal comes in. An appraisal is one person’s opinion of what a mortgage lender should be prepared to lend on a particular property, based on the recent history of sales of similar properties. What can you do if you have an appraisal issue? 1. The Realtor can prepare and file an appeal through the lender. That means the parties submit additional information and request that the appraiser reconsider the value. Appraisers are human too and sometimes miss something or make a mistake just like everyone else. 2. The buyer and the seller can agree to reduce the sale price to the appraised value. 3. The buyer can elect to come up with additional down payment and pay the difference at the closing table. 4. The buyer can walk away from the deal and get their earnest money back. The contract should have an appraisal contingency, and if the buyer is getting an FHA or VA loan, that appraisal contingency covers the buyer all the way to closing regardless of any other terms in the contract. If the house doesn’t appraise, the buyer gets their earnest money back. But they still lose the money they have invested in inspections and the cost of the appraisal itself. In conclusion, the best way to handle an appraisal issue is to avoid one! Both buyers and sellers should work with experienced Realtors. Real estate agents that work daily in the local housing market can counsel both buyers and sellers about realistic home values. Green Door Books in Hobart will be hosting “Is This Not A Dream?..” featuring the art of David M. Lubarski for the month of August. Lubarski, a Highland native, is a multimedia artist primarily working with collage. This collection of work deals primarily with the concept of dreams as it relates to life, memories, and imagination. “Collages are a lot like dreams,” Lubarski said, “we piece things we know or have experienced together to create an unfamiliar dreamscape, yet it’s still oddly familiar. A place we haven’t been, but feel like we have.” The show opening will be held on August 5th from 7pm-10pm. Green Door Books is located at 325 Main Street Hobart, IN.

They Didn’t Obey the Rules! WOODROW WILCOX

On July 18, 2022, I helped a man who is an immigrant from Eastern Europe. He got a bill for $695.75 for medical services. Previously, I had helped him to investigate the billing problem and wrote a letter to the billing firm to fix it. But the medical biller ignored my letter and sent a letter demanding payment within ten days. So, I helped the client file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General at the Consumer Protection Division. I help clients file such a complaint about 12 to 24 times per year. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the attached explanation of complaint that was sent with this complaint. You should read this and see how it is structured in case you ever need to file a complaint. Get the complaint form at the website for the office that handles consumer complaints. Every state has a similar office to help consumers. I got services on March 28, 2022 from XXXXX XXXXXX, Inc. That firm sent a bill to me for $695.75. (See accompanying copy.) The administrator at the insurance agency that I use helped me request a Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) about this bill. The MSN clearly states at footnotes “s” and “t” on page 18 of 31 that the maximum that can be charged is $7.22. (See accompanying copy.) The administrator sent a polite letter to XXXXX XXXXXX about the fact that Medicare ruled that $695.75 of the claim was denied because “payment was included in another service received on the same day.”

(See accompanying copy.). Instead of following Medicare’s ruling, XXXXX XXXXXX ignored Medicare’s ruling and sent a collection letter dated 07/07/2022. (See accompanying copy.) In the collection letter, XXXXX XXXXXX demanded payment of the false balance within ten days. Since XXXXX XXXXXX refuses to adhere to the rules and rulings of Medicare and frightens senior citizens with demand for payment letters in violation of Medicare rules, XXXXX XXXXXX should be punished for its bad business practices. Please, help protect me (and any other senior citizens being wrongfully bullied by XXXXX XXXXXX by forcing that firm to stop billing me for money that Medicare ruled is not owed. All the help that I gave this man was FREE OF CHARGE. This agency always helps our clients with Medicare related medical bill problems without charging anything. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service to senior citizen clients, why not switch to one that does? Our agency does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients save over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.
