Monarchs Now on International Endangered List; Here’s What You Can Do to Help Monarchs, with their striking orange and black wings, are some of the most well-known butterflies in the US. But the Monarch, whose population has declined by over 80% in the last twenty years, has recently been included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM as Endangered, threatened by habitat destruction and climate change. That means these butterflies are just steps away from extinction. The eastern population of Monarchs is known for its longdistance migration of up to 3,000 miles across three countries— an epic journey unique among North American butterflies. Monarchs play an important pollinator role in ecosystems. They migrate north through Illinois during the summer months before turning south again in the fall to spend the winter in Mexico. Illinois and other Midwestern states are pivotal pit stops on this journey for summer breeding, which requires milkweed for female Monarchs to lay their eggs and fall nectar resources. Field Museum scientists have shown that cities, especially large urban metropolises like Chicago, are critical sources of milkweed and other native flowers for the Monarch population. “What we plant matters,” says Abigail Derby Lewis, Conservation Tools Program Director in the Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center. “Everyone can take action to help support the Monarch butterfly, which will also help a wide range of other pollinators and even birds.” The Field Museum’s Rice Native Gardens provide an eye-catching example of how native plantings can create an oasis for Monarchs, but even individual plants in home gardens make a big difference. To help Monarchs survive and thrive along their journey, plant pesticide-free milkweed species native to your region, along with native flowers that will bloom across the growing season,

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN In just a few weeks, students will be heading off to college – and parents will be getting out their checkbooks. Without a college-bound student in your home right now, you might not be thinking much about tuition and other higher education expenses, but if you have young children, these costs may eventually be of concern – so how should you prepare for them? It’s never too soon to start saving and investing. Unfortunately, many people think that they have a lot of “catching up” to do. In fact, nearly half of Americans say they don’t feel like they’re saving enough to cover future education expenses, according to a 2022 survey conducted by financial services firm Edward Jones with Morning Consult, a global research company. Of course, it’s not always easy to set aside money for college when you’re already dealing with the high cost of living, and, at the same time, trying to save and invest for retirement. Still, even if you can only devote relatively modest amounts for your children’s education, these contributions can add up over time. But where should you put your money? Personal savings accounts are the top vehicle Americans are using for their education funding strategies, according to the Edward Jones/Morning Consult survey. But there are other options, one of which is a 529 plan, which may offer more attractive features, including the following: Possible tax benefits – If you invest in a 529 education savings plan, your earnings can grow federally income tax-free, provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. (Withdrawals not used for these expenses will generally incur taxes and penalties on investment earnings.) If you invest in your own state’s 529 plan, you may receive state tax benefits, too, depending on
the state. Flexibility in naming the beneficiary – As the owner of the 529 plan, you can name anyone you want as the beneficiary. You can also change the beneficiary. If your eldest child foregoes college, you can name a younger sibling or another eligible relative. Support for non-college programs – Even if your children don’t want to go to college, it doesn’t mean they’re uninterested in any type of postsecondary education or training. And a 529 plan can pay for qualified expenses at trade or vocational schools, including apprenticeship programs registered with the U.S. Department of Labor. Payment of student loans – A 529 plan can help pay off federal or private student loans, within limits. Keep in mind that state-by-state tax treatment varies for different uses of 529 plans, so you’ll want to consult with your tax professional before putting a plan in place. Despite these and other benefits, 529 plans are greatly under-utilized. Only about 40% of Americans even recognize the 529 plan as an education savings tool, and only 13% are actually using it, again according to the Edward Jones/Morning Consult study. But as the cost of college and other postsecondary programs continues to rise, it will become even more important for parents to find effective ways to save for their children’s future education expenses. So, consider how a 529 plan can help you and your family. And the sooner you get started, the better. Helped Gary Police Retiree WOODROW WILCOX On July 25, 2022, a Gary Police retiree that I helped stopped at the Merrillville office to thank me for helping her. Previously, Medicare was billing her over $1,300. Then, Medicare billed her $850. I had helped her file complaints about the wrong figures. She did not know where or how to file complaints to get the matter resolved. I did. She got a letter and a phone call promising her that the
matter had been fixed. I asked her to bring a copy of the letter to me so that I could close the file. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. We help all our clients for free on matters relating to Medicare medical billing problems. It is how we demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why
not switch to an insurance agency that does? This one does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in Medicare related billing. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available at book stores and online.
Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
Put The Right Hat On! MIKE BUDER In today’s real estate industry, mortgage rules and the way business is done change daily. Whether you are a buyer, a seller or a real estate agent you need to expect problems. Are you and your agent problem solvers or solution seekers? Seriously, what do you focus on? Do you focus on the problem or do you focus on the solution? There is a big difference between these seemingly similar approaches. Here’s my take…let’s say the home inspection didn’t come out quite the way the seller or buyer wanted it to. Some agents get their shorts in a bunch and “blame” the clueless inspector as if he is the problem and other agents get busy finding solutions to what needs to be fixed along with the buyer and seller. Which agent is bringing better energy to the transaction? Which agent comes across more professional, trustworthy and with the ability to get the job done? Seems pretty simple to me. I mean think about it – if what we focus on expands – then why in the world would you focus on the problem? Why not look for solutions? I know this may seem “simple” but I don’t think it’s as simple as we all believe. In fact it’s quite profound! It’s
a lot more energizing to look for solutions. And it certainly is more creative and satisfying as well. Think about this if you’ve got a “hitch-in-the-git-a-long” in your real estate transaction. Approach the situation with your solution-seeker hat rather than your problem solver hat. Visualize the solution hat on your head (ok-I know this is sounding a little airy fairy but it works). Take the time to notice how much smoother the situation seems to get handled and how quickly solutions come to mind. Notice how the other parties in the transaction respond to you. And - notice how you feel! Seriously – if you practice solution-seeking enough it can change your life for the good – not to mention help to get your real estate transaction closed. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friendrequest Mike Buder. JOSH BOOTSMA My family and I took a trip to Colorado this summer, and it was awe-inspiring. From the sight of looming mountains in the distance to hiking beautiful trails in the thin mountain air to rafting through raging rapids, the Lord’s handiwork was certainly on display. And, at the risk of sounding arrogant, I think God was delighted that I was there. Have you ever created something that you’re incredibly proud of? It’s satisfying to enjoy your own work, but it’s even more satisfying to see someone else’s reaction, isn’t it? You want to show your painting to your family. You want to give your friends a tour of your new house. You can’t wait to show your spouse how you redecorated the living room. Holding beauty in our own hands gives us joy, but I think sharing that beauty with others gives us even more joy. When the Lord created those monstrous peaks and valleys, when he sprinkled countless evergreen and aspen trees on the rocky slopes, he knew he was doing good, beautiful work. The first chapter of Genesis tells us so. And then I, for the first time, see the same distant peaks and mountain lakes that have existed for centuries. And when I smile in awe, I think God smiles as well. My joy is His joy. I like to think of Him saying, “I’ve been so excited for you to see this.” The Lord delights to show us His good creation, and He also delights to show us His salvation. As much as I think God says, “I’m so glad you’ve finally seen my mountains” I think he’s infinitely more overjoyed to say, “I’m so glad you’ve finally seen my son, your savior, Jesus.” God is not just a creator of mountains, he’s also our Father. He’s the author of our salvation. And He delights in our joy. The joy of seeing His mountains, but even more so, the joy of our salvation through Jesus Christ. Neighbor 2 Neighbor JANICE MINTON-KUTZ
IT WAS A SILKY MIDSUMMER EVENING AT THE HIGHLAND, INDIANA MAIN SQUARE PARK-Temperatures in the mid 80’s, no wind to speak of and the fragrance of popcorn wafted through the air. A true Midwestern small town experience. This was evening five (7/29/22) of a six-night production “JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT” of Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice’ creation when they were 17 and 20 years of age respectively. The outdoor production put on by Highland Parks and Recreation and featuring a talented cast of locals brought out families, friends, parents, pets and interested theatre people. Acts I and 2 were upgraded a little to reflect 2022 social mores’. The Broadway Production garnered six Tony nominations and been produced over 20,000 times in some shape or form around the world. If anyone still cares-- when Donny Osmond was in Dreamcoat he suffered extreme embarrassment when his loin cloth fell off- This according to trivia in the playbook. Emcee (and sound and lighting) was the legendary Tom Lounges. Sponsors included Baxter Printing, Centier Bank, Strack and Van Til, Krooswyk Materials. Kudos to-The Drama Group in Chicago Heights, Il, Limelight Theatre Works ,Kankakee, Il; Macquilly Apparel, Parents and Family of the Cast.... Eric Trevor and the whole Highland Parks and Recreation team, WJOB, Tom Lounges (Lake Shore Public Radio) and John Huber (the Spot Studio.) ***

AN ELECTRIC VOLKSWAGEN? COMING DOWN THE HIGHWAY NEAR US: With the ‘drive’ for new cars heating up and gas prices rising accordingly manufacturers are starting to produce electric cars as well as gas fired engines. VW Manager Kris Krasowski and sales Associate Arthur Matlosz of City Volkswagen in Highland, Indiana look over their gas engine inventory while the huge photo in the background depicts an electric VW, This 2022 everyone--with gasoline prices rising--we have to be ready for a new line of electric vehicles. ***
PEACH ICE CREAM IS BACK IN SEASON AT CUNIS’ IN SOUTH H0LLAND: Using the same delicious recipe used by generations past, the fresh peach ice cream at Cunis on 162nd Street in South Holland is beyond delicious! Pictured here are Mary Biesiada and her sister Angela Uittenbogaard who make the heavenly treat! N 2 N has been going to Cunis’ for years and especially in summer for the fresh peach ice cream! Go there for a real summertime treat-cool--peachy and fabulous! ***
PIEROGI FEST DRAWS CROWDS FROM THE REGION: As in the case of Cynthia, Stephanie and Christopher Andel. The trio drove in from Crown Point to get in on the fun! They are pictured here with a ‘monster’ decoration as they try their luck on the Midway. ***
IF WHITING’S PIEROGI FEST IS TOO CROWDED DRIVE A FEW BLOCKS NORTH TO WHIHALA BEACH AND TRY THE ‘WOHA’ WATER RIDE: Back again this year, the popular attraction at Whilala Beach in Whiting is the “WOAH” ride or rather “experience.” For $23 an hour per person one can give the “experience,” a whirl. It’s $10 per hour per person after that. N 2 N didn’t really see a lot of people on the “WOAH,” Sunday after we left Pierogi Fest. And a swimmer gave a one-word review of the water....”freezing, “ she noted. “But, it was fun getting out and warming up in the hot sun.” *** FESTIVALS ABOUND BUT DON’T MISS HEGEWISCHFEST SATURDAY AUGUST 6, 2022. The festival starts at 11 am this Saturday August 6th, 2022 and runs through 10 pm with bands, a beer tent, crafters, local food vendors and continuous live entertainment like the ECHOES OF POMPEII and PHIL ANGOTTI BAND. Presented by the Hegewisch Business Association--this is an all-community event. See you there! ***

NATIONAL WATERMELON DAY: Did you know that watermelon is 92% water? No wonder it’s so refreshing! People have been digging into this tasty, juicy fruit for millennia and it all started in Ancient Egypt. It’s said that watermelon cultivation began in the Nile Valley as early as the second millennium B.C. Watermelon seeds were even found in King Tut’s tomb! On August 3, we celebrate this ancient berry in a feast of juicy deliciousness—otherwise known as National Watermelon Day.

Real Estate Specialists
Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are thinking of selling our home next month. What can we expect if we do? Answer: This is still a very good real estate market. People are still buying homes. If your home is well cared for and updated, you can expect it to sell quickly and you will be happy about your selling price. Mortgage rates started rising from historic lows in the second Half of 2021 and may continue to increase throughout 2022. This is in large part due to high levels of inflation and the current administration’s policy response to rising prices. Mortgage applications are down more than 15% compared
to 2021. What this means is that there are less qualified buyers. I said, “Less buyers,” not “No buyers.” Demand for homes will drop, but homes will still sell. People still need to move for various reasons. But, I can’t stress enough that you need to have a saleable property to obtain top dollar. Like I mentioned before, your home must reflect being well cared for and your home must be attractive, to attract, the fewer buyers, otherwise, buyers will choose the nicer properties. In summary, with low housing inventory, low unemployment, wage growth and a large demographic of buyers entering their peak homebuying years, the housing market should stay strong.
However, rising interest rates are making things less affordable for a lot of people. This leads us to expect slower home sales and smaller price appreciation, but still a very strong sellers housing market. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. He was born in Thornton, Illinois to Cornelius and Anne DeYoung in 1933. Harris lived nearly all of his life in South Holland, Illinois and was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church of South Holland. He graduated from Thornton Township High school in 1951 and literally married the girl across the street, Marilyn Paarlberg, the year after he graduated.
