Alice M. Greenwald, President & CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, said: “It has been my greatest honor to serve as President and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. With the effort and commitment of so many, the Memorial & Museum has become one of the nation’s most consequential and impactful institutions, and with the selection of Beth Hillman, both the Museum and the Memorial will continue to thrive in service to our nation as a landmark site of commemoration, education and inspiration. From her leadership in the military justice system, to her transformational impact in higher education, to her historical expertise, Beth Hillman brings a unique combination of skills and experience to lead the 9/11 Memorial & Museum into the future.”

Elizabeth L. Hillman said: “The tragic events of 9/11 forever changed all of us and their significance continues to have a deep impact on who we are as Americans. I am honored and humbled to serve an organization that has successfully honored such a sacred trust – telling the story of 9/11 and its continuing impacts, shining a light on the heroism we saw and honoring those who perished.
I look forward to working alongside the families and first responders at the heart of this institution, in addition to the incredible staff, board members, curators and broader community, to build upon the foundation established at the Memorial & Museum. Following last year’s 20th anniversary, it is our solemn obligation to ensure over the decades to come that we continue to tell the story of 9/11, perhaps most importantly, to generations who do not have any memory of 9/11 or connection to the events of that day.”
Jeh Johnson, former United States Secretary of Homeland Security and Trustee of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, said: “Beth Hillman brings an extraordinary background serving our nation in uniform and proven leadership navigating institutions through challenging times to the Memorial & Museum. I am confident that under her leadership, we will build on the strong foundation already forged, commemorating the loved ones and heroes who perished on 9/11, while also engaging a new generation of Americans around the tragedy that forever changed our country and world.”
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum announced Elizabeth L. Hillman – veteran of the U.S. Air Force, respected historian, advisor to the U.S. Armed Forces, college president, and higher education leader with experience managing organizations through complex challenges – will be the institution’s new president and CEO. Hillman is succeeding Alice M. Greenwald, who has led the museum since January 2017. The Board of Trustees engaged in an extensive national search process after Ms. Greenwald announced earlier this year she would be stepping down. The search focused on finding a leader with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, ensuring new generations who did not experience the tragedy firsthand learn the lessons of 9/11. Since its inception, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum has welcomed more than 56 million visitors to the Memorial and more than 18 million visitors to the Museum. It spans a 16-acre site with more than 100,000 square feet of exhibition space containing more than 90,000 artifacts, images, videos, documents and oral histories. More than 100 heads of state and other dignitaries have visited the institution.
Admiral William H. McRaven, Trustee of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, said: “From day one of her professional life, Beth Hillman has worked to serve our country, and her decision to join and lead this institution is the next chapter in a lifetime commitment to service. More than 20 years later, the events of 9/11 continue to have a deep impact on our country, shaping who we are as Americans, guiding how we interact with the world and informing what our future may bring. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum has deep responsibilities, which now include ensuring new generations understand what transpired in 2001 and absorb those lessons. Beth Hillman’s entire career – as a military officer, an advisor to the armed forces, a historian, an educator and higher education leader – has prepared her to lead thi institution and meet those sacred responsibilities.”
Paula Berry, Trustee of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, whose husband, David Berry, was killed on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center, said: “Beth Hillman is a patriot with the skills, experience and passion to lead the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. With a career grounded in service to country and community, Beth emerged as a clear stand-out during this search process. We are fortunate to have her leadership, courage and tenacity as we approach the 25th anniversary and beyond.”
ABOUT ELIZABETH L. HILLMAN: Elizabeth L. Hillman is a nationally recognized leader in higher education, history, justice and equality, and an expert on the U.S. military justice system. Hillman began her career as a space operations officer in the U.S. Air Force, which she served for seven years, including two years as an instructor of history at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Most recently, Hillman served as the 14th president of Mills College, the first women’s college west of the Rockies, where she oversaw a reduction in tuition to protect access in response to the rising cost of college and spearheaded a transformative merger of Mills College with Northeastern University, to increase opportunity for students and safeguard Mills’s future for generations to come. She was recently appointed Chairperson of the U.S. Department of Defense Military Justice Review Group, which conducts Hillman is the recipient of the U.S. Department of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service and the CalVet Trailblazer Award from the California Department of Veterans Affairs. Hillman previously served as provost, academic dean and law professor at the University of California Hastings College of the Law. She also served as law professor at Rutgers Law School. She received her Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Duke University, a Master of Arts in history from the University of Pennsylvania, a JD from Yale Law School and a PhD in history from Yale University.
Michael R. Bloomberg, Chairman of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, said: “As the Memorial & Museum honors its sacred obligation of paying tribute to those we lost, saluting those who sacrificed to save lives and chronicling the events and impacts of the 9/11 attacks, we are also increasingly focused on educating new generations who did not live through 9/11 and its aftermath. And in Beth Hillman we found the right leader to marshal our efforts and lead the Memorial & Museum’s next chapter. Beth brings a rare set of skills from her experience as a college president, managing large institutions through challenging times, as a veteran who is still relied upon by our armed services, as a historian whose deep sense of service is grounded in a lifelong commitment to learning and as a trailblazer who has fought for justice and equality her entire career. She has the right background and expertise to lead us to the 25th anniversary, and into the next 25 years.”

Emily Rafferty, Vice Chair of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and Co-Chair of the Search Committee, said: “At the start of this search process, we had an ambitious goal of finding someone with demonstrated leadership who also had an ability to bring diverse stakeholders together. From the moment we met Beth – with her commitment to service and her experience navigating complex organizations towards a common vision – we knew that we had found that person. We are proud that she has continued her record of service by joining the 9/11 Memorial & Museum as president and CEO and look forward to supporting her leadership for years to come.” Russ Carson, Trustee of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and Co-Chair of the Search Committee, said: “The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is at a pivotal moment as we move towards the 25th anniversary, work to engage new generations around the tragedy and further establish it as a historic American institution. It was clear in getting to know Beth that managing through moments of change with assuredness, humility and openmindedness is nothing new. In fact, it’s been a defining feature of her career. With Beth at the helm, we feel confident that the Memorial & Museum will continue to fulfill its critical duty of commemorating and educating Americans of all ages about the tragedy and humanity of these events.”

There are no shortcuts to investment success — you need to establish a long-term strategy and stick with it. This means you’ll want to create an investment mix based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon — and then regularly review it to ensure it’s still meeting your needs. In fact, investing for the long term doesn’t necessarily mean you should lock your investments in forever. Throughout your life, you’ll likely need to make some changes. Of course, everyone’s situation is different and there’s no prescribed formula of when and how you should adjust your investments. But some possibilities may be worth considering. For example, a few years before you retire, you may want to reevaluate your risk exposure and consider moving part of your portfolio into a more conservative position. When you were decades away from retiring, you may have felt more comfortable with a more aggressive positioning because you had time to bounce back from any market downturns. But as you near retirement, it may make sense to lower your risk level. And as part of a move toward a more conservative approach, you also may want to evaluate the cash positions in your portfolio. When the market has gone through a decline, as has been the case in 2022, you may not want to tap into your portfolio to meet short-term and emergency needs, so having sufficient cash on hand is important. Keep in mind, though, that having too much cash on the sidelines may affect your ability to reach your long-term goals. Even if you decide to adopt a more conservative investment position before you retire, though, you may still benefit from some growth-oriented investments in your portfolio to help you keep ahead of — or at least keep pace with — inflation. As you know, inflation has surged in 2022, but even when it’s relatively mild, it can still significantly erode your purchasing power overChangestime. in your own goals or circumstances may also lead you to modify your investment mix. You might decide to retire earlier or later than you originally planned. You might even change your plans for the type of retirement you want, choosing to work part time for a few years. Your family situation may change — perhaps you have another child for whom you’d like to save and invest for college. Any of these events could lead you to review your portfolio to find new opportunities or to adjust your risk level — or both. You might wonder if you should also consider changing your investment mix in response to external forces, such as higher interest rates or a rise in inflation, as we’ve seen this year. It’s certainly true that these types of events can affect parts of your portfolio, but it may not be advisable to react by shuffling your investment mix. After all, nobody can really predict how long these forces will keep their momentum — it’s quite possible, for instance, that inflation will have subsided noticeably within a year. But more important, you should make investment moves based on the factors we’ve already discussed: your goals, risk tolerance, time horizon and individual circumstances. By reviewing your portfolio regularly, possibly with the assistance of a financial professional, you can help ensure your investment mix will always be appropriate for your needs and goals. I’ve never met anyone who likes doing IT…IT is not difficult. But IT is messy…IT is not expensive. But IT is time consuming… home sellers hate doing IT. Home buyers hate IT even more…a few serious home sellers will do IT – but most will not (and then wonder why their house isn’t selling)… home buyers will typically choose a house where IT doesn’t have to be done…what is IT? Care to guess? IT is a dreaded home improvement project hated by most...do you know what IT is? “IT” is removing wallpaper. If you’re interested in making your home irresistible to buyers and you have dated wallpaper, then you should really do IT whether you like IT or not. As the recent escalation of mortgage interest rates has elevated our housing inventory, today’s choosy homebuyers prefer a home that is move-in ready and they tend to bypass homes that require updates. It is very difficult to live with someone else’s old dated wallpaper selection, so it will be well worth the time and effort spend removing it. I know you don’t want to, but remember, your buyers won’t want to either. Some sellers may prefer to hire a professional to remove the old wallpaper and paint the walls. However, removing wallpaper is one of those inexpensive projects that many homeowners can take on themselves. Some wallpaper can be stripped dry. Others require a removal solution. If there is going to be any damage to the wall, it will come from the way the wallpaper was initially installed. It is not just that it is work to do, but it will take your time and physical effort. Stripping, scraping, patching, cleaning, and painting – all “ing” words that sound like a lot of effort. But it’s going to be worth it when buyers come into your house with their own “ING” word as in BUYING! Franciscan Health has awarded Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana with a $10,000 grant to support the construction costs of a Habitat home in Lake County. The grant funds will help with construction costs for a safe, affordable Habitat home in Lake County. Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana works to stabilize struggling, working families through its homeownership program. After a partner family is approved, they are expected to complete a 40-hour financial education course and 300 “sweat equity” hours helping build their home. Once they move in, the partner family will begin monthly payments on their zero-percentage mortgage. “Owning a home has major effects on a family, like creating self-reliance, reducing stress and improving overall health. We’re grateful for this grant to be put towards our mission of helping a family achieve affordable homeownership.”

Do you think there’s something you could do to repay God for the long list of things he’s given you? Something you could do that would make God say, “Oh, very nice. Now the scales are even.” Of course not. In this world of value and transactions, where we’re so concerned about receiving the most bang for our buck, where I invite you over for dinner and expect the same from you, where I expect to be invited to your wedding — and you expect me to give you a gift — and I expect an open bar and a good meal — and you expect a glittery card — and I expect a thank you card in return — GOD IS ABOVE IT ALL!As Isaiah 55 says, God’s ways truly are not our ways. He knows we cannot repay Him, and yet he’s given us so much — and he keeps giving! As you think of your many blessings this week, I encourage you to find both great humility and great joy in considering that the only thing you can give to God in return is thanks.
Your mind darts around, trying to think of an appropriate action or words to somehow repay the kindness that’s been given to you. Eventually you realize all you can say is “thank you.” If you’re a Christian you know this feeling. The gifts God has given to us are astounding. They’re dumbfounding. The gift of salvation through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, the promise of an inheritance that includes a perfect existence into eternity, the reality of God’s daily looking out for us in our normal lives. And that’s not to mention the blessings of family, friends, church, a warm home, a working car, a job, a cute dog, a comfortable couch, good movies on Netflix, or perfectly seasoned chicken wings!

LABOR DAY 2022—A NATIONWIDE HOLIDAY: The first Labor Day Holiday was celebrated on Tuesday September 5, 1882 in New York City in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. By 1884, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the First Monday in September of each year a National Holiday. Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades, picnics and parties—festivities very similar tom those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday which suggested the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations,” followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day to the present, Monday September 5, 2022! American Labor has raised the standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the Labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate that the Nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the Creator of so much of the Nation’s strength, freedom and leadership—the American

My brother Jerry Jr was a member of the truck driver’s union, my other brother Glenn was with Arcelor Mittal Steel Workers Union 1011 and my beloved late son Spencer L Minton worked for the IBEW Electrical union for A T & T and my husband Larry Kutz worked for the Illinois Secretary of State union. Like the attached memo regarding how the Labor Unions enhanced our lives starting early in the last century—no question about it. How the unions fare in 2022 and beyond remains to be seen. NATIONAL WAFFLE WEEK - SEPTEMBER 4-10, 2022
The word waffle actually comes from the Dutch “wafel,” and that comes from Middle Dutch “wafele” which stretches as far back as the thirteenth century. Before that, the French called it “walfre” in 1185 from the Frankish wafla which meant ‘honeycomb” or ‘cake’. No matter what you call it, no one can deny its deliciousness.

Drawing on experience working with rescued sea lions both at Shedd and in the wild, this pup rearing experience continues to advance skills that Shedd’s Animal Response Team can use to assists our partners with sea lion rescue and release efforts along the Pacific coast. Shedd will continue to provide updates on the new arrivals’ development and when guests can expect to see them in the sea lion habitat. More information about sea lions at Shedd can be found on the aquarium’s website: https://www.sheddaquarium. org/animals/sea-lions.
The Towle Theater is proud to present the final show in their 2022 subscription season. The Last Lifeboat is a drama by Luke Yankee directed by Towle Theater Managing Director, Jeff Casey. The Last Lifeboat is sponsored by Calumet Electric Supply Corporation. The 2022 Season is sponsored by Leon Dombrowski and Seda Turan and Accucraft Imaging. J. Bruce Ismay was an upper-crust Englishman who always did what was expected of him. He went to the best schools, married the right society girl (even though he was in love with someone else) and vowed to his staunch, unfeeling father on his deathbed that he would take over the family shipping business and build the biggest, most opulent ship the world had ever seen: the RMS Titanic. We all know the story of how the ship sank... or do we? Ismay saved as many people as he could and finally, with no women and children in sight, he stepped into the last lifeboat...and was branded a coward and traitor forever. The world needed a scapegoat and Ismay became the perfect target. This is the story of the Titanic that‘s never been told. This epic tale explores not only the tragedy itself, but the sensationalized trials and aftermath of the night that changed the world forever.

A recognized leader in animal care, Shedd Aquarium announced today that it has welcomed two California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) from Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington D.C. The new arrivals are behind-the-scenes of Grainger Sea Lion Cove at the aquarium getting more familiar with their new home and animal care team. The first new arrival is a three-year-old sea lion named Charger, who was sired by Tanner – one of Shedd’s rescued sea lions from the Bonneville Dam – during his time at a zoological facility accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). AZA institutions cooperatively manage animal populations as part of shared species survival plans. The second addition is a three-month-old male pup sired by Charger during his time at Smithsonian’s National Zoo. This means Shedd is now home to three generations of sea lions under one roof, and the story demonstrates the broad impacts and legacy that a second chance at life can have for a single rescued animal like Tanner. “These two newest additions kept us busy from the moment we arrived,” said Katie Majerowski, animal care specialist at Shedd Aquarium, who accompanied the sea lions on their trip to Chicago. “We’ve been monitoring them closely, day and night, to ensure a smooth transition to their new home. But ultimately, there is no more rewarding experience than seeing our sea lion colony grow and participating in their new adventure here at Shedd.” Over the next few weeks and months, the animals will continue to get acquainted with new spaces, caretakers and potentially meet the other three sea lions at Shedd. Charger is around 230 pounds, and he shows early signs of confidence even as he explores his new environment and caretakers. The pup is nearly 30 pounds and has already learned to swim, engage with enrichment like toys and vocalize. Both sea lions will continue to grow, as Shedd’s largest and oldest sea lion Tanner is about 630 pounds. “We have the capacity, social structure and decades of experience caring for sea lions to provide an ideal home for Charger and the new pup,” said Peggy Sloan, chief animal operations officer at Shedd Aquarium. “Shedd is unique because we have committed to an all-male population of sea lions – animals that can sometimes be challenging to care for long-term in zoos and aquariums because of their size. We got word that these sea lions were in need of a new home, and we are joyfully opening our doors and hearts to Charger and his pup.”The pup, which does not currently have a name, is the youngest sea lion in the aquarium’s history. He came to Shedd at this age because he was rejected by his mom, which resulted in him needing to be hand-reared for the best chance at survival. Shedd’s animal care team will provide hands-on care for the pup to ensure he reaches key development milestones, which include monitoring his growth as he receives critical nutrients from formula until he is weaned and introduced to fish for the first time. Additional milestones will also involve socialization with the animal care team, introduction to other sea lions at the aquarium and participating in early training and enrichment sessions.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath reshaped many aspects of life in the U.S., and how Americans eat and drink is no exception. Disruptions in the initial months of COVID-19 forced food producers and distributors to adapt how food gets to consumers, and ongoing challenges with supply chains and the labor market have led to shortages at grocery stores. In the restaurant business, many restaurants have reoriented their businesses toward takeout and delivery, with the market for food delivery in the U.S. more than doubling during the pandemic.

PUBLICATION NOTICE OF COURT DATE FOR REQUEST FOR NAME CHANGE (ADULT)
• Food and beverage spending per resident: $4,935•Total spending per resident: $43,536 For reference, here are the statistics for the entire United States: • All food and beverage spending as a share of total spending: 12.0% •Grocery spending as a share of total spending: 7.0%•Purchased meals and beverages spending as a share of total spending: 5.0% • Food and beverage spending per resident: $5,153•Total spending per resident: $43,016
The latter trend came in response to major disruption to the food service industry from lockdowns and public health measures early in the pandemic. Bars and restaurants were among the businesses hit hardest by these policies. Unable to host patrons at full capacity, establishments drastically reduced their staffing and turned to takeout and delivery to continue operating while keeping costs low. Employment in the sector fell by nearly half in just two months, from 12.4 million in February 2020 to 6.4 million in April 2020. Even after public health restrictions loosened later in 2020, employment in the sector has been slow to recover. Today, the food and drink services industry employs 11.6 million people, still short of its pre-pandemic peaks. While the COVID lockdowns of 2020 provided an initial shock to the industry, shifting consumer preferences have also been a challenge for food service professionals. Bars and restaurants reopened over the course of 2020, but not all consumers rushed back. As fears around COVID persisted, many consumers have opted to spend more of their food budget on groceries for meals at home. This reality quickly reversed trends in food spending over recent years. In 2020, spending on groceries as a share of total household spending reached its highest in two decades, while spending on purchased meals and beverages fell to their lowest levels since the GreatTimeRecession.willtellhow lasting changes in spending on food will be, especially in light of the high levels of inflation seen over the last year. While since the turn of the century, prices for food consumed at home grew more slowly than those for food consumed outside of the home, the opposite is true since the start of the pandemic. Since 2020, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food at home has risen by 18.2%, while the CPI for food away from home has grown by just 13.5% over the same span. The rate of price growth for food at home has been particularly stark after remaining roughly flat from 2014 to 2020. Though households in the pandemic have been more inclined to choose groceries over meals out, rapidly rising food prices have stretched household budgets as a result. Inflation in the cost of food has been felt nationwide, but residents in some locations will feel the effects more than others. In states with lower incomes, especially in the South, residents spend a higher share of their overall household spend on food. Whether buying groceries or dining out, residents in these locations already struggle the most with food costs and will disproportionately feel the effects of inflation.

In the event of a tie, the state with the greater grocery spending as a share of total spending was ranked higher. The analysis found that—on average— residents of Illinois spend $4,935 per year on food and beverages, which amounts to 11.3% of all spending. Among residents of all states, Illinois residents spend the 11th least on food. Here is a summary of the data for Illinois:
• Purchased meals and beverages spending as a share of total spending: 4.9%
To determine the states where residents are spending the most on food, researchers on behalf of Self Financial used data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis to calculate all food and beverage spending as a share of total spending.

This is such an important moment for Chicago as a city has been a sanctuary for thousands of newcomers. We are welcoming them and we will not turn our backs on those who need our help the Accordingmost.”toa timeline by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago officially became a sanctuary city in 2006 with the passage of an ordinance prohibiting city agencies from inquiring about a person’s immigration status when they seek city services.
On August 31, 2022, I wrote a letter to a laboratory that sent two bills to a client who lives in South Holland, Illinois. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the laboratory that billed our client. Our client sent to our firm two bills from your firm for our review. One bill is for service requested by (a medical firm) with Date of Service 04/25/22 with a balance of $370 on Invoice # XXXXXX.Theother bill is for service requested by (a medical firm) with Date of Service 04/25/22 with a balance of $132 on Invoice # XXXXXX.Iphonedour client’s secondary insurer to ask what it knew of these bills. It reported that your firm sent the bills without sending any Medicare Explanation of Benefits to prove that your firm actually filed the claims with Medicare as you are required to do for all Medicare patients if you are contracted with Medicare. From many years of dealing with your firm, I believe that (your firm) is contracted with Medicare. So, why did your firm fail to file the claims with Medicare? Our client’s secondary insurer requested that your firm send the Medicare EOB forms to it on May 24, 2022. Your firm failed to respond at all. Why? That seems extremely unprofessional on your part. To fix this problem as fast as possible, please send both the original billing information and the Medicare EOB information on both claims to the secondary insurer at the following address.Allthe help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This firm helps our clients with Medicare related medical bill problems free of charge to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our insurance agency. We have agents licensed in Indiana and Illinois. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services at its office in Merrillville, Indiana. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.
Abbott’s memo also directed mayors and county judges to notify the agency of any “dropoffs” by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security “that may necessitate dispatching a bus, a plane, or some other means of evacuating such migrants from our State.” The move was part of Abbott’s protest of President Joe Biden’s decision in April to end what are known as Title 42 expulsions – a practice used during the Trump administration to immediately expel immigrants, including asylum seekers, arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border based on public health concerns related to AbbottCOVID-19.has complained that the decision to end that program has resulted in an explosion of illegal border crossings into Texas and that the Biden administration has failed to deal with the“Presidentissue. Biden’s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans –and Americans – at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” he said in a statement Wednesday. “To continue providing muchneeded relief to our small, overrun border towns, Chicago will join fellow sanctuary cities Washington, D.C. and New York City as an additional drop-off location.”

About 60 migrants arrived in Chicago Wednesday on buses from Texas as part of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s ongoing policy to send undocumented immigrants to so-called “sanctuary cities.” But Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, both Democrats, say the new arrivals are welcome in Illinois, and they are vowing to make sure the new arrivals receive essential services. “Illinois welcomes refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants and we are working with federal and city officials to ensure that these individuals are treated with respect and safety as they look to connect with their family and friends,” Pritzker said in a statement Wednesday night. “My great-grandfather came to this country as an immigrant fleeing Ukraine in 1881. Immigrants just like my family seeking freedom and opportunity built this country. Illinois is and has always been a welcoming state.” Abbott launched the program in April when he issued a memo directing the state’s Department of Emergency Management “to begin coordinating the voluntary transportation” of immigrants who had been released from federal custody. Abbott began by busing immigrants to Washington, D.C., and later to New York City. Chicago is the third city he has targeted to receive immigrants. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that most of those arriving Wednesday originated from Venezuela, a country in the grips of a yearslong economic crisis that has reportedly forced some 6.8 million inhabitants to leave their homeland.

Another ordinance passed in 2012 prohibits police from detaining anyone solely on the belief that they are in the U.S. illegally and prohibiting them from cooperating with federal authorities when they believe a person’s immigration status is the only reason a warrant has been issued.

“Mayor Lightfoot loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status,” he continued, “and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them.”
“Using men, women, and children seeking asylum as political pawns is inhumane,” Welch said. “While he’s wasting $12 million taxpayer dollars on these stunts, Illinois will be working with state and federal officials to ensure these new Americans find opportunity, peace, and a new home in Illinois.” Capitol News Illinois is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news service covering state government that is distributed to more than 400 newspapers statewide. At the state level, Illinois lawmakers passed a package of bills in 2021 aimed at protecting the state’s immigrant population, including a requirement for local governments to end partnerships with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a law making a person’s citizenship or immigration status a potential motivation for a hate crime, and protections from workplace discrimination based on a person’s work authorization status.

A spokesperson for the mayor quickly fired back, posting a statement on Twitter around 8:30 p.m. saying: “We know that racism, discrimination, and human cruelty have played a pivotal role in how immigrants are received within our borders, and we are still working to recover from the previous presidential administration, which encouraged this behavior.
At the same time he signed those bills, Pritzker also signed an executive order establishing a Welcoming Illinois Office within the governor’s office to develop and coordinate policies to make Illinois a more welcoming and equitable state for immigrants and refugees. Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, issued a statement Thursday calling Abbott’s actions “abhorrent.”
