Woodrow Wilcox

Woodrow Wilcox wants to teach what he knows about fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare medical billing system. While working at his friend’s insurance agency in northwest Indiana, he has saved clients of the agency over three million dollars.

“I just agreed to come to my friend’s office one day while his receptionist took a day to visit her doctor. I just answered the phone and took messages to give my friend when he arrived. When he did, I told him that four or five of his clients phoned to report that their insurance companies were not paying the bills for claims,” Wilcox stated. “My friend told me what he knew of the problem and what he did to try to help his clients with that problem.”

Wilcox learned that the problem was common but that it was not usually caused by insurance companies. Wilcox suddenly realized that he understood the problem better than his friend who owned the insurance agency. A month later, his friend hired Wilcox to help clients fix the various problems they were having with Medicare related medical bills to keep the clients as happy customers.

members. Also, the agency grew to having over 22,000 clients.

“The Medicare system can be so complicated that it overwhelms seniors. I just have a natural ability to ask questions to get answers that lead to solutions,” Wilcox said.

Woodrow Wilcox will turn 70 in October 2024. He has survived two mild strokes and one mild heart attack. He wants to teach others how to help seniors fight bad medical billing in the Medicare system so that his knowledge and skills will live on to help senior citizens even after he passes away. So, he started a website where anyone can read his articles and watch his videos for free. The website is CitizenWoodrow.TV.

“The Medicare system is a humanly designed flawed system which is operated by humans who make mistakes, too,” Wilcox explained. “I just had a talent for tracking the source of the problem and getting others to cooperate to fix it in order not to harm senior citizens financially.”

The insurance agency where Wilcox worked grew from one office with three insurance agents and three staff members to five offices with a dozen insurance agents and almost a dozen staff

“I use the website to teach about helping seniors and commenting on public issues that have bothered me for a long time. I have written over 2,000 articles about problems with the Medicare system and how I fixed the problems for our senior citizen clients. I’m gradually adding articles to the website. If I live long enough, I’ll put all the best articles on the website. But I’m concerned about other things, too. I’ve learned from a friend about the serious topic of human trafficking. I’ve learned that federal tax money is being misspent. Money that is supposed to be used to protect unaccompanied children entering our country is actually being misspent to put those children in harm’s way. Whether people like my comments on anything or not, I’m talking about things that concern me because I care about other people. I guess it’s my method for letting off steam and keeping my blood pressure down,” Wilcox concluded.

The Village of Thornton Historical Society presents: “Christmas Traditions at the White House”

Learn the history of the gingerbread house tradition, the National Christmas Tree, and the thousands of ornaments created by artists around the country over the years. Did you know the White House didn’t have a Christmas tree until 1889? Or that it takes up to 200 people to put the decorations each year? When you invest, you’ll find that knowledge is power. The more you know about your investment choices, and who is offering them, the better prepared you’ll be to make good decisions. And this diligence can also help protect you against investment scams.

How widespread is this activity? Consider this: Investment fraud losses totaled more than $4.5 billion in 2023, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report.

Here are some common types of scams:

• Cryptocurrency – Not all cryptocurrency offers are scams, but many are. The scammers will contact you via social media, claiming they’ve made a lot of money in crypto and are willing to help you do the same. They may direct you to a website or app to invest, but the “company” taking your money may not even exist, and, after taking your money, may disappear.

• Investment programs – These programs claim to have “proven” strategies that can enable you to get rich by investing in financial products. But these strategies are dubious at best and can cost you thousands of dollars that could otherwise go into an investment plan based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

• Real estate – Typically, a real estate scam tries to get you to invest in a “world-class” or “luxury” property development, but these properties may take years to build, if they’re built at all. Also, various real estate “seminars” claim they can teach you how to get wealthy by buying and selling real estate, but these programs are expensive and usually worthless.

• Gold and other precious metals –Scammers who call themselves “rare coins” merchants may try to sell you gold coins, bullion or other types of precious metals, claiming that these assets will always go up in value (which isn’t true) and that “now is the best time to act.” You can find legitimate ways to invest in precious metals,

Real Estate Questions & Answers

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Question: Our home is listed for $250,000. We received an offer for $240,000 and they wanted us to pay $6000 of their closing costs. The buyer has FHA financing. We countered their offer with $245,000 and no closing costs. Anyway, after going back and forth, our Realtor convinced us to pay the $6000 in closing costs and raise the price to $252,000. We did and the buyers accepted our offer. A few weeks later, the appraisal came back at a $247,000 value. Now the buyer wants the home for the appraisal price and wants the $6000 in closing costs that we agreed upon. Our Realtor said take it and move on. What is your opinion?

Answer: The concept of a seller crediting a buyer for their closing costs is pretty normal. The amount varies from deal to deal. If the amount can be agreed upon, it is a benefit to both parties and produces many successful closings.

A lower appraisal means that in order for the deal to be financed by the lender, the seller would have to drop to the appraisal price or the buyer would have to make up the difference. Very few buyers are going to want to purchase a home over the appraised value. This FHA appraisal stays with your home for 4 months. So if you say no to the deal, the

next FHA buyer within the 4 months, would use the same appraisal.

It is possible that you could find a conventional loan buyer, with the hope that this appraisal would yield a higher value. But you are starting all over and there are no guarantees that it would be easy to find a conventional buyer or that the appraisal would be any different.

Since your contract is being renegotiated at a lower price than what was agreed upon, you do NOT have to pay the $6000 in closing costs. Sure you agreed to pay them, but the buyer also agreed to pay a higher price for your home.

Perhaps you can renegotiate the closing costs or other items in the contract that would make the deal appealing to both sides. After all, the buyer did like your home and you do want to sell! possibly through mutual funds, but you’ll need to determine whether these assets can be an appropriate part of your investment portfolio. So, how can you avoid these scams? Here ae some suggestions from the Federal Trade Commission:

• Don’t be pushed into snap decisions. Scammers will pressure you to act quickly because “space is limited” in an investment offering or a “special deal” won’t last long. If someone won’t give you time to consider an offer, it’s not worth considering.

• Be suspicious of “risk-free” claims. All investments carry risk, and no variable investments can claim to provide “guaranteed returns.” If an individual or organization downplays the risk of an investment and doesn’t want to provide risk disclosures, just walk away.

• Ask about licensing or registration. Legitimate investment professionals must be registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and be licensed by your state’s securities regulator before they can sell you any investment product. You can check the status of an individual or firm by using FINRA’s BrokerCheck tool at brokercheck.fina.org.

• Do some research. You can search online for the name of the company or individual offering you an investment opportunity. By entering terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud” or “complaint,” you may well find that other people have experienced problems or been victimized.

To achieve your financial goals, you’ll likely need to invest for decades — so, be wary of scammers who claim to offer a shortcut to success.

Fall is back. The days are getting shorter, the nights longer. Some days, a bright sun in a blue sky still coaxes us out of our layers into a T-shirt. Then the sun retreats, shadows lengthen, and evening’s chill settles in till morning. The deep greens of summer are making way for the hues of autumn – its yellows, reds, and oranges. Our corner of the world will soon be ablaze with color.

I love fall. But not everyone does. Fall generates strong reactions, one way or the other. For some, its beauty is the beauty of death. Colorful leaves are dead leaves. They fall, leaving trees stark and barren. Winter is coming.

For some, fall brings seasonal depression. Life turns grey, along with the surrounding world. Energy levels drop. Some leave home in the dark and return home in the dark. Cold and flu season is upon us.

Take care of yourselves, friends. Seek help for seasonal disorders. Find ways to boost your immunity. Exercise as you are able. Enjoy fresh air. Soak in fall’s beauty. Don’t isolate. Connect with others. Attend weekly worship.

Let autumn’s signs of death point you to the great Source of Life – our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You will meet him in the pages of the Bible. You will also meet him in the worship gatherings of local churches that faithfully give him center stage.

Let autumn’s splendor point you to the breathtaking beauty of the One who made it. In his perfect plan, beauty, not death, has the final word for all who turn from self-rule to entrust their lives to the care and control of Christ, our Beautiful Savior, the King of Creation.

Yom Kippur, most solemn of Jewish religious holidays, observed on the 10th day of the lunar month of Tishri (in the course of September and October), when Jews seek to expiate their sins and achieve reconciliation with God. Yom Kippur concludes the “10 days of repentance” that begin with Rosh Hashana (New Year’s Day) on the first day of Tishri.

Your Spouse Should Be Your Best Friend

This past weekend, my husband Phil and I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of my lifelong friend’s daughter, Audrianna, to the love of her life, Jacob. It was a beautiful ceremony and reception, filled with love, happiness, and joy. They had spent months planning for that special moment. As they walked into the room to be announced for the first time as husband and wife, ready to begin their lives together, I realized the importance of friendship as part of the foundation for a strong marriage.

Many couples spend tens of thousands of dollars on weddings – on the dress, the venue, the food, and the exotic honeymoon. But, too often, they forget to invest in what matters, which is a strong relationship that will last beyond the wedding day for a lifetime. Friendship is an essential building block for a lasting and happy marriage. Audrianna and Jacob Mitchell reminded me of how special it is to marry your best friend, which they did.

When Phil and I got married, I felt so blessed to be marrying my best friend. We became close friends through courtship, dating, and long conversations that allowed us to get to know each other. We developed a deep respect, appreciation, and understanding for one another beyond romance. While love and passion might be what bring people together, friendship is what keeps a marriage strong.

What are the characteristics of a best-friend relationship? Best friends typically are there for each other in every situation. They are there for each other through it all like Dionne Warwick and Friends sang about in the 1985 hit “That’s What Friends Are For”. You should be able to rely on your spouse for love, along with emotional support, advice, comfort, and companionship during joyful and tough times. Having your spouse as your best friend means that you trust them completely, they have your back, and you can be open and honest with them.

Best friends talk about everything with each other such as their

hopes, dreams, fears, and frustrations. Good communication is vital between spouses. You want to know that your partner values your thoughts, opinions, and feelings without being judgmental. Good communication is a two-way street, you must also be a good listener and truly care about how the other person feels and thinks. Communication builds respect. Your spouse should be your biggest cheerleader to encourage you, help you, and tell you the truth.

The Bible talks about the power of love and friendship in marriage in Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV), which states, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” This verse signifies the need for a strong bond in a marriage because the two become like one. A couple should know and understand each other just like they know themselves. The individuals come together to form a team. God designed people not to be alone but to work and live as a team. We accomplish more as a team than alone. Marriage comes with loyalty and a commitment to stand side by side as a couple, no matter what.

When we marry our best friend, we follow the biblical model of partnership, support, and unconditional love. A marriage built on friendship develops resilience and the ability to withstand life’s challenges. Your best friend cares about your well-being and wants to grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually with you.

Marrying your best friend is one of the best gifts you can give your marriage. You gain a lifelong friend and partner who will have your back through thick and thin. Friendship is a component of making a lasting relationship for the rest of your life. Y? Why Not! Illinoisans: Beware of Disaster Fraud

SPRINGFIELD - Fraudulent activity typically increases after disasters. Con artists may try to get money from you or ask for your personal information to try and steal your identity. Survivors of the July 13 – 16 severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding in Cook, Fulton, Henry, St. Clair, Washington, Will and Winnebago counties should be aware that fraud and scams can occur anytime. If your home or personal property was damaged in the recent storms, be careful when giving out your personal information.

Remember, FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and other federal and state disaster workers will never ask for money and never require payment in any form.

Fraudulent Applications

If a FEMA inspector comes to your home and you did not apply for assistance, your information may have been used without your knowledge to create a FEMA application. If this happens, inform the inspector that you did not apply for FEMA assistance, so they can submit a request to stop further processing of the application.

If you did not apply for assistance but receive a letter from FEMA, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. If you use video relay service, captioned telephone service or others, give FEMA your number for that service. The Helpline will submit a request to stop any further processing of that application.

Other Disaster-Related Scams

FEMA teams, housing inspectors and other officials will be working in areas affected by the summer storms and flooding. Always ask to see I.D. FEMA personnel always have an official identification badge.

Be careful of unexpected phone calls or visits to your home from people claiming to be FEMA housing inspectors or people claiming they work for FEMA. FEMA inspectors will already have your FEMA application number, but they may ask you to verify personally identifiable information by phone. If you’re unsure whether a FEMA call or visit is legitimate, contact the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 to verify.

Don’t give your banking information to a person claiming to be a FEMA housing inspector. FEMA inspectors do not collect or ask to confirm your personal financial information.

Take Action

If you believe you are the victim of a scam, report it immediately to your local police or sheriff’s department.

If you have knowledge of fraud or scams involving FEMA’s disaster relief operations, you can report this to FEMA:

Email: StopFEMAFraud@fema.dhs.gov

Phone: 866-223-0814

Sound the Alarm: Stay Safe; Stay Alert!

While fire safety is important all year, Fire Prevention Month is the perfect time for a refresher on lifesaving steps to protect your family and home. One of the most important actions you can take is to make sure your home has working smoke alarms. In fact, smoke alarms are so critical that this year’s Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12) theme is, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!TM”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than half of home fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that didn’t work.

Smoke alarms serve as the first line of defense in the event of a house fire, giving families the crucial time to escape safely. Our biggest priority is to make sure every home is safe and protected.

Here are safety tips on the correct use and management of smoke alarms:

• Cover all the bases. Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling or high on the wall in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. If the smoke alarm is installed on the wall, make sure it isn’t covered by curtains or any other obstruction. If your home has multiple levels, smoke alarms should be installed on each one, including the attic. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing them.

• All for one, one for all. Interconnected smoke alarms offer the best protection— especially if you sleep with your bedroom door shut. When one sounds, they all sound. Every second counts during a house fire, and this may give you more time to get out.

• Choose an alarm that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. There are two common types of smoke alarms: ionization and photoelectric. Photoelectric alarms are more responsive to smoldering fires, and ionization alarms are more responsive to flaming fires. It’s recommended to

have both types or alarms that combine both technologies for the best protection. For fewer false alarms, photoelectric are the best for kitchens and bathrooms.

• Test smoke alarms regularly. All smoke alarms should be tested once a month. You can do that by pressing the test button. If the alarm doesn’t sound, it’s time to replace the batteries (or the alarm itself). In addition to testing, smoke alarms should also be cleaned regularly. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and clean carefully.

• Make the proper replacements. Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years, even if they appear to still be working properly. Batteries should be replaced every six months. If the alarm chirps, then the batteries should be replaced right away.

• Some smoke alarms have long-life batteries that are non-replaceable. These are designed to work for up to ten years and don’t need their batteries changed every six months. However, if the alarm chirps, you need to replace the whole smoke alarm.

• Ensure smoke alarms meet the needs of all in your household. For those who are deaf or hearing-impaired, typical smoke alarms may not be reliable to alert them of danger. There are other options available, such as smoke alarms that have strobe lights that flash when the alarm sounds.

Research your options and different products, and find the best fit for your household. We want everyone to be alerted in the event of a fire. Again, make sure these devices are listed by a qualified testing laboratory.

Working smoke alarms save lives, but only if they are installed correctly and maintained regularly. We want every family to make sure their home is equipped with functional smoke alarms in the right places.

Bill Cancelled and Got a Refund

On Monday, September 30, 2024, a client came to my office with papers about a medical bill for her deceased husband. She had received some papers and wanted me to look at them. The bills were caused by her late husband’s passing. The widow is from Lake Village, Indiana. I checked the papers and phoned a medical firm with her to confirm my interpretation of the papers. My previous work on the medical bill problem had worked. Previously, the medical firm had billed her $209.93. After I helped her send letters to that firm and a complaint to the Indiana Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection, that bill was eliminated and she got a refund check for $23.29.

The client thanked me for my work and for double checking to make sure I interpreted the papers correctly. I was glad to help her.

All the help that I gave this widow was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps all our clients with such medical bill problems AT NO CHARGE. It is a way that we demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, shouldn’t you switch your business to an agency that does? This one does.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in Medicare medical billing. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.
