The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to announce a special guest artist exhibition entitled “Murmurations” by Karen Ackoff. The photographs will display in the Photo Four Gallery at SSC from Tuesday, October 18 to Thursday, November 17, 2022. On Monday, October 24, 2022, from 12:00 pm –1:00 pm, SSC will host an artist talk in the Photo Four Gallery, located on the college’s fourth floor.
Ackoff stated, “When large numbers of birds fly together, they swirl in a repeating, coordinating, changing pattern. “Murmuration,” derived from the wings’ sound, occurs when birds flutter together. My work speaks through a network of small brush strokes like a murmuration. Together they form shapes and shadows that gradually unfold as a painting develops. My work whispers - It does not shout. My drawings are completed with care and control. Yet, they are not without passion. The passion is in each object – its shape, subtle color, and tonalities. In the stories, the object tells as brush or silver moves over the ground’s surface. Teasing out inherent beauty with focus and patience, I whisper back.”
The SSC Photo Four Gallery is open Monday -Thursday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays.
Cmdr. Jenna Van Zeyl became the first Gold crew commanding officer of Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Savannah (LCS 28) during an assumption of command ceremony aboard the ship, Oct. 7.
Van Zeyl, a native of New Lenox, Ill., was previously the executive officer of Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Princeton (CG-59), and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in astronautical engineering.
“This is a significant moment for Savannah Gold as we embark on a transition to train, certify, and prepare for our on-hull operational tasking”, said Van Zeyl. “I am honored to lead this crew and excited to use our expertise and skills to drive long-lasting success for the years to come.”
Savannah, assigned to Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE, is the most recently commissioned Independence-variant LCS, and is currently located in San Diego, California. Littoral combat ships are fast, agile, mission-focused platforms designed to operate in near-shore environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats. LCS are support forward presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence missions around the globe.

A One-Two Punch!
Recently, I helped a 95-Year-Old man and his family reduce two medical bills. He is from Gary. Her daughter told me that her mother, the man’s wife, was very worried about the two bills.
One bill was for $4,860.50. I reviewed that bill and found a mistake problem in the bill. I contacted the medical biller, explained their mistake, and asked them to refile the claim with Medicare to correct their mistake and not hurt our client and his family. The firm listened and cooperated with me. That made the bill for $4,862.50 go away.
don’t write Medicare rules. We should let a patient recover near home and family.
The ambulance/medical car company did nothing wrong. The bill was caused by Medicare’s 20 miles only coverage policy. I negotiated a compromise bill of $400. I appealed to the transport firm’s sense of wanting to treat the patient and his family with compassion and kindness.

Illinois.
The second bill was for $1,725.00. That bill was caused by a bad policy of Medicare. Our client needed to be transported from a hospital in Chicago to a rehabilitation firm. Someone at the hospital in Chicago did not accurately describe the choices to the family. They asked the man to be transported to the rehabilitation firm in Crown Point. All the other choices were in Illinois. They wanted the man to be close to family for visiting him. Medicare approved only the first 20 miles of transporting the man. The rest of the trip would be charged to the family. The bill came to $1,725. I think that the Medicare policy of a 20-mile limit is ridiculous. But I
Altogether, I saved our client and his family $6,187.50. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps our clients with Medicare related medical bill problems without charge to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our agency?
Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

Questions & Answers
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS
Question: Why do I see a huge gap in the number of affordable new brick homes. In our price range, we see only all vinyl with fancy extras. We want all brick, but builders seem to gear those to the upscale market.
We’ve also noticed the brick facade homes lately, which tricks you into thinking its brick until you see it from the side! I would gladly give up a garage and fancy appliances, for example, and get the same house in brick! But why is it so hard to find?
Answer: It’s about Money. It is less expensive to use siding than to hire masons. Sit down with a builder. Give him your price range with Brick being a necessity and work from there. There are plenty of other builder options that can be substituted to help keep yourself in budget. Be advised, having built three homes myself, staying in budget with new construction is not easy.
Question: I have recently sold my home. A contract was signed, and there was no appraisal contingency. The buyers now want to back out because the appraisal came in
lower than they expected. I have quit my job and moved some of my things to another state. Do the purchasers have to buy the house, or are they scott free, and I only get the deposit?
Answer: You need to look at the agreement to see if there is a provision which would allow the buyers to back out without penalty. In the event of improper default, however, some forms say the seller keeps the deposit, some say the seller can keep the deposit or sue, and others say the seller keeps the deposit and also has a right to sue for damages. As well, some agreements say the broker is entitled to half the deposit up to the value of the commission.

Should you consolidate retirement accounts?
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKINOne of the rewards for working over several decades is the ability to contribute to tax-advantaged retirement accounts, which can help provide needed income for you when you do retire. As the years went by, you may well have accumulated several retirement accounts, such as IRAs and 401(k)s or similar employer-sponsored plans. But you might find it advantageous to consolidate these accounts with a single provider.
Consolidating them can provide you with several potential benefits, including these:
• Less confusion and clutter – If you have multiple accounts in different locations, it may be difficult to keep track of tax documents, statements, fees, disclosures and other important information. Consolidating accounts could help provide clear, simplified account maintenance.
• Less likelihood of “lost accounts” – It may be hard to believe, but many people abandon their retirement accounts, leaving thousands of dollars behind and unclaimed. In fact, at the end of 2021, there were nearly 25 million forgotten 401(k) accounts, worth about 20% of all 401(k) assets, according to an estimate by Capitalize, a financial services company that helps individuals roll over retirement plan assets into new accounts. It’s possible that employers can even move small, old accounts out of their 401(k) plans and into an IRA on behalf of their former employees, thus increasing the chances that savers will lose track of their money. By consolidating your retirement plans with one provider, you can ensure you don’t lose track of your hard-earned money.
Ability to follow a unified strategy –With multiple retirement accounts, and different investment portfolios, you might find it difficult to maintain a unified financial
strategy that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. But once you’ve consolidated accounts with a single provider, you’ll find it easier to manage your investment mix and to rebalance your portfolio as needed. The need to rebalance may become more important as you near retirement because you may want to shift some of your assets into investments that aren’t as susceptible to swings in the financial markets.
• Possible improvement in investment options – Often, 401(k)s may have limited investment selection, so consolidating accounts with a full-service firm may allow for a wider array of products and strategies. This broader exposure can potentially help you improve your overall retirement income strategies.
• Greater ease in calculating RMDs –Once you turn 72, you will need to start taking withdrawals — called required minimum distributions, or RMDs — from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar plan. If you don’t take out at least the minimal amount, which is based on your age and account balance, you could face a penalty. If you have several accounts, with different providers, it could be cumbersome and difficult to calculate your RMDs — it will be much easier with all accounts under one roof.
So, if you do have multiple retirement accounts, give some thought to consolidating them. The consolidation process is not difficult, and the end result may save you time and hassles, while also helping you manage your retirement income more effectively.

Too often, I succumb to
me on Route 6 behind a stopped train or on I-80 eastbound these days, and you will know!
Perhaps that’s why I am impressed by the God-given patience of several men I visit regularly at the Cook County Jail. They have been waiting five, six, even seven plus years, pre-verdict, as their cases proceed, inch by inch, like traffic on I-80, toward a resolution. When I ask, “How can I pray for you?” they often say, “Pray for patience.” They pray continually for patience. God hears and answers their prayers. It helps, they say, to know that their Father is sovereign and that they, their challenging circumstances, and the details of their cases, are completely in his hand.
Their testimonies remind me of two Scripture-saturated statements in the historic Heidelberg Catechism. First: “I trust him so much that I do not doubt he will provide whatever I need for body and soul, and he will turn to my good whatever adversity he sends me in this sad world. He is able to do this because he is almighty God; he desires to do this because he is a faithful Father” (Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 26b).
Second: “How does the knowledge of God’s creation and providence help us? We can be patient when things go against us, thankful when things go well, and for the future we can have good confidence in our faithful God and Father that nothing will separate us from his love. All creatures are so completely in his hand that without his will they can neither move nor be moved” (Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 28).
May God plant these truths in our hearts. May they take root in us and produce the fruit of patience.

Pictured here are from left: Cardinal Cupich, Laura Del Toro and Fr David Simonetti, pastor, St Florian/ Christ Our Light parish. Congratulations Laura and her family.
OUT FOR A SUNDAY STROLL—JIM AND STEPHANIE—AND THEIR BELOVED PETS: Last Sunday morning was perfect for a stroll with the pups! Jim and Stephanie Wisniewski took Zeena, a 7 year old Frenchie, Lucy, a 4 month old poodle and Carmella, a 2 year poodle out for a walk. The Wisniewski’s like to take the dogs out for an early morning stroll when the air is fresh, the breeze is balmy and traffic at a minimum. N 2 N a total animal advocate, loves this! Way to go Jim and Stephanie!
THREE GENERATIONS OF PALLOTTO’S IN DR. ANTHONY PALLOTTO’S NEW HIGHLAND OFFICE: In the lobby of the beautiful new suite of offices at MADE SMILES, 2213 Main Street in Highland, In are Dr Nick Pallotto, retired, holding a picture of his Dad, Dr. Romeo A. Pallotto in his Army uniform. Dr Romeo began his dental career in the US Army and then built the Commercial Medical Arts Building where he practiced for 30 years.
Eventually, son Dr Nick Pallotto joined Dr Romeo in South Chicago and then in the family practice in Lansing. Eventually Dr. Anthony and his wife Josephine joined the family practice in Lansing. Dr Anthony is one of only 1,200 Board Certified Prosthodontist’s (see related story) in the US. Dr Josephine is also a dentist. Thus, the family DENTAL DYNASTY is underway.
The family is hoping that 2 year old Anthony Pallotto, held by his Dad, Dr Anthony. follows in the family’s dental footsteps.

About a year ago I went on a listing appointment. The seller was referred to me by a past client of mine. I thought that would give me the edge against the other Realtor she was talking to…but it didn’t. The listing appointment itself was awesome! I instantly felt comfortable with the client, and she felt comfortable with me because of all the nice things my past client told her about me. She also said that she felt like she already knew me because she had been reading my weekly column over the past few months. I toured the home and now it was time to get down to business. We sat down at the dining room table and I talked to her about my marketing plan, my brand and what I have to offer a seller over my competitors. Then I suggested that she needed to de-clutter just about everywhere and repaint a couple of the bedrooms. She really didn’t like that idea. Then we talked price and she didn’t like that either. She was hoping for an amount that was approximately 25% higher than the current comps indicated. Even though the market at the time was a faster pace seller’s market than it is today, her house needed some pre-listing attention in order for buyers to give it any serious consideration. She thanked me for coming and we parted ways. I was pretty sure that she wasn’t going to list with me…I was right. She emailed me the following morning: Sorry Mike,
I’m going with the other Realtor and here are the reasons why…1. He told me that I didn’t need to do anything to get my home ready to list. 2. He said he would sell it for a drastically reduced commission since I am probably buying something else as well. 3.
He said that he could get me the amount that I want for the home and 4. He told me that he can sell it quick! I thanked her for the opportunity to meet with her and wished her well. No harm, no, foul, no worries…You can’t win them all.
Now, fast forward to today (a year later). This house is still on the market, but was recently reduced to a price below my recommended price when we first met. Oh, and the new photos show the home decluttered a bit. I’m not always right…I’ve had some listings that were a bit off pricing before I got it right. But, for the most part I have been spot on. Sellers, be careful when an agent tells you what you want to hear and promises you the moon!

Bishop Noll Band Named Best Band In Chicago Columbus Day Parade
Bishop Noll’s band program has made a full return to its busy schedule and has received recognition for its hard work and dedication. Most recently, the band participated in the Chicago Columbus Day Parade Oct. 10 and was voted by the parade committee as overall best band, receiving first prize of $1,000.
The band’s next parade performance will take place Nov. 5 at the Hammond Veteran Appreciation Day Parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m., traveling from Olcott Avenue, down 173rd Street and ending at Hessville Park Veterans Memorial.
BNI’s Mariachi Band also gives back to the community, most recently performing at BurnsHicks Elementary in Hammond to celebrate National Hispanic Month.
This summer, the Bishop Noll band was selected to represent the state of Indiana and compete in the Reliaquest Bowl in Tampa, Florida, Dec. 29 to Jan. 2.
“These kids have a special gift, and they
want to give back to the community. The fruits of their hard work are paying of with the honor of representing the state of Indiana down in Florida,” said Rocco Carioto, BNI band director.
To raise funds for the upcoming trip, the band has organized several fundraisers. A mattress sale fundraiser will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23 in the Bishop Noll fieldhouse. This is free and open to the public and all name brand beds will be sold at huge savings. The public can purchase a bed at a savings and have it shipped to their home.
On the same day, the band will perform a free fall/ Halloween concert at 2 p.m. Oct. 23 in the school auditorium. Attendees can attend the Halloween concert and then stop by the mattress sale.

Mrvan Announces
DHSI Grant Award for Calumet College of St. Joseph
Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced a federal grant award for Calumet College of St. Joseph under the Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) program.
According to the Department of Education, Calumet College of Saint Joseph will receive $600,000 to create a model career pathway that will place students in highdemand, high-wage careers in health services by enhancing student support and increasing cultural-competency among faculty and staff. The program will provide health and holistic wellness services to students to increase resiliency and promote success in college and the workplace.
The DHSI program provides grants to assist HSIs to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the attainment of, Hispanic students. The DHSI program grants also enable HSIs to expand and enhance their academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability.
“I thank all of the educators and leaders at Calumet College of St. Joseph for their efforts to secure this critical funding that will prepare students for careers in healthcare,” stated Rep. Mrvan. “I am proud to support Hispanic-serving institutions of higher education, and I look forward to continuing to expand educational opportunities for students across Northwest Indiana.”
“This funding provides significant support to help further some of our strategic priorities and to move toward our vision of being a vital and valued resource for the region,” Calumet College President Dr. Amy McCormack said. “It strengthens the institution overall by building on the primary strength that emerged in a comprehensive analysis, our culture of belonging and support and a strong sense of community. These new initiatives will help all students move forward -and upward -- in life.”
Dr. Ginger Rodriguez, Project Manager for both this grant and an earlier Department of Education grant, added that these resources will support student success in school and in careers. “Synergies between these two programs will mean that we will be able to provide additional support for student access, achievement, and success. Ultimately, that success benefits not only students and their families, but the community where we live and work as well.”

As you prepare to vote, be informed – not misled
Here are my top three tips to avoid falling for election misinformation between now and Nov. 8:
When your emotions flare, take a step back.
By ALEE QUICK Civic Marketing Manager, News Literacy ProjectThe world of Illinois politics is notoriously wild at times, and this year’s midterm election season is holding true to form. Disagreements on policy issues are the bread and butter of campaign clashes, and we’ve seen plenty of those. But we’re also seeing misinformation, from misleading political mailers to memes that peddle outright falsehoods about the controversial SAFE-T Act. The legislation addresses criminal justice issues including use-of-force standards and training for police, and ends cash bail in 2023.
I’m not here to debunk any specific claims. Rather, I want to share some resources you can use to find credible information to make your own decision. These simple news literacy tips will help you navigate the information you’re likely to see this election cycle, so that when you cast your ballot, you can be sure you’re not swayed by mis- or disinformation.
First, an introduction: I’m Alee Quick; I live in Carbondale, and I work for the News Literacy Project. NLP is a national nonpartisan educational nonprofit that seeks to teach news literacy skills to help people be informed rather than misled –something that’s especially important during election season. I also worked for several years as an editor at The Southern Illinoisan, where I covered many elections.
If a political ad or social media post makes you angry, scared, sad or even excited or hopeful, take that as a cue that you need to pause before you like, share or forward. Content that provokes a strong emotion overrides our rational thinking and prompts us to take immediate action – even if that action isn’t the best way forward. When you feel that wave of emotion, take a step back, then open another tab in your browser and do a quick search online to confirm whether the message that has gotten to your emotions is accurate.
Google like a pro.
Most of us turn to a search engine like Google if we want to fact-check a claim. Doing your own search can be especially helpful for finding the original context of a candidate’s quote or double-checking the content of a viral meme – especially if it’s a screenshot. You can use quotation marks to find websites that contain an exact phrase, limit your results to standards-based news outlets, narrow the timeframe of your search, verify a photo through a reverse image search and more. You can also use Google to search content on one specific website.
Look for information about voting from reliable sources.
Why might you want to limit your search to specific sites? Some of the most common misinformation around election time is about the mechanics of voting itself – how, when and where to vote. When it comes to casting your ballot, the most reliable
information comes from the government agency in your area that oversees the election.
In Illinois, the State Board of Elections works with local election authorities to administer the election. At elections.il.gov, you can find the status of your registration – including your polling place and what congressional district you’re in – as well as information about voting by mail and how to contact your local election authority. We get to vote early here in the Prairie State, and your local election authority – a county clerk or municipal or county election commission, depending on where you live – will post information about early voting hours and locations. If you want to see what’s on your ballot, your local election authority usually posts that online, too.
If you want to take a deeper dive into the greater problem of election misinformation, how to avoid it, and how to talk to loved ones who may have fallen for it, my organization is hosting three free webinars – starting Oct. 18 – in which we’ll discuss those topics in depth. We’ve also got a lot more resources at https:// newslit.org/election2022/.
Your vote matters and I hope you’ll participate in this year’s election. But make sure you’re well-informed about the candidates and issues before you mark your ballot. Credible information from reliable sources will help you navigate this wild election season with confidence.
