Morgan Park Woman’s Club Celebrates 135th Anniversary

CHICAGO, IL – October 18, 2024 – The Morgan Park Woman’s Club (MPWC), the oldest woman’s club still in existence in Chicago, will offer a celebration of the club’s past, present, and future on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Smith Village Senior Living, 2320 West 113th Place, Chicago.

The event, “Morgan Park Woman’s Club: 135 Years of Community Service,” will include a brief Power Point presentation on the history of the MPWC and information on the current club. Artifacts from the club’s historical collection, dating back to the 1880s, will be on display. Refreshments will be served.

By the mid- to late-1800s, the move from rural to urban lifestyles led to a growing middle class of women with the time and resources to engage in activities outside of the traditional roles in the home. Denied membership in men’s clubs, women formed their own clubs.

Throughout the country, women’s clubs started during the Progressive Era of the late 1800s to provide development opportunities for women. The original purpose of selfdevelopment in the arts, music, and literature quickly expanded into social and political causes such as education and libraries;

rights for children, the elderly, and the disabled; conservation and environmental efforts; services for U.S. military veterans; and the suffrage and temperance movements.

The MPWC, which started as the Ladies Club of Morgan Park on November 5, 1889, made many contributions to the community. Some of the highlights the program will cover include the club’s role in establishing local PTAs and performing Red Cross work that led to the club winning the Chevron Award. Along the way, the women still found time for enjoyable fundraising social events such as “galloping breakfasts.”

By the 1970s, women’s clubs were on the wane. Their very success in establishing women as dynamic leaders eventually led to their downfall, as women finally were welcomed to serve on boards of community organizations.

The MPWC persisted through the years that saw many women’s clubs fold. Today, the MPWC structure has adjusted to the needs of contemporary women, offering both socialization and service opportunities.

The history of MPWC is the history of the community. This free event will appeal to the public, community leaders, and those interested in history.

Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana Launches New Tax Credit Program

for Humanity of Northwest Indiana Launches New Tax Credit Program to Expand Pathways to Homeownership for Working Families

October 18, 2024 – Lake County, IN – Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana is proud to announce the introduction of Indiana’s Attainable Homeownership Tax Credit, aimed at empowering community members to invest in housing solutions that bring stability and opportunity to working families. This innovative tax credit enables donors to double the impact of their contributions, fostering safe, quality homes for families striving to achieve homeownership.

Contributions made to Habitat for Humanity of Indiana— including Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana—are eligible for a tax credit equal to 50% of the donation’s value, tax credits being capped at $10,000 per donor each year. This program offers a unique opportunity for residents and businesses to support the mission of Habitat while gaining significant tax savings.

“This tax credit is a game-changer for the families we serve,” said Dawn Michaels, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana. “Every contribution helps build more homes and strengthens our local community. Especially as 2024 draws to a close, we urge taxpayers to consider making their charitable contributions soon to take full advantage of Indiana’s Attainable Homeownership Tax Credit. With a finite amount of tax credits available, early donations ensure that contributors secure this substantial tax benefit while supporting local families on their path to homeownership.”

Key Details of the Attainable Homeownership Tax Credit:

Who is Eligible: The tax credit is available to all Indiana state taxpayers, including individuals, small businesses, corporations and financial institutions.

Types of Donations: Contributions can be made via cash, check, credit card, stocks, bonds, land, real estate and even inkind contributions of construction material (must be used in home building).

Tax Benefit: Donors receive a 50% tax credit on their Indiana state taxes, meaning a $2,000 donation results in a $1,000 tax credit. Carry Forward Option: Unused credits can be carried forward for up to five years, providing flexibility for donors to maximize their support.

Donations directed to Habitat for Humanity of Indiana benefit Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana directly, ensuring that every dollar raised supports local efforts to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through homeownership. Those interested in learning more or donating can visit Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana’s website at nwihabitat.org/taxcredit-program.html or call (219) 237-2128.

About Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana: Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana serves the Lake County community by partnering with families to build safe, energy-efficient homes. Our mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. With the support of local partners and donors, we continue to provide hardworking families with opportunities to own quality homes and create brighter futures.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Question: We have received several feedbacks that our home has an odor. We do not smell anything. Any suggestions?

Answer: Homeowners can become ‘nose blind’ to their home’s own smell, and that could be problematic when putting the home up for sale. After all, the smell of a property can have a big influence on buyers’ perceptions of the home. And no one wants to have a smelly house.

Nose blindness happens when a nose detects an odor but determines it’s no longer an annoyance. It then shuts down receptors for that smell. As such, a lingering smell no longer is detected by the homeowner.

One of the best methods to tell if your home stinks is to leave it. Go away for a day or two, or at least, a few hours. Close all windows and doors, shut the blinds, and seal the place up airtight. On return from your getaway, and as soon as you open the door, be sure to take a large breath in through the nose. That way you’ll find out what someone new to your home really smells.

Homeowners can also ask a friend or their Realtor for some honest advice. The best way for anyone to discover if their home smells is to ask a friend to be truthful and tell them. If the house does smell, there are many methods to eliminate this odor. Remember

Saving for college? Or retirement?

If you’re a parent, you want to do everything you can to help your children succeed in life. Therefore, you might think that one of the best things you can do is to save for your children’s college education. And this is certainly admirable, but could it conflict with your ability to prepare for another key goal — your own retirement?

Of course, this would not be a problem if you had unlimited means, but most of us don’t fall into that category. So, given the financial resources and income you do have, how should you approach the college-versusretirement issue?

Fortunately, it’s not necessarily an “eitheror” scenario. However, it may make sense to prioritize saving for retirement over college, for two reasons.

First, your children have a lot more time to pay for college than you have to save for retirement. In addition to any grants or scholarships your children may receive, they might need to take out loans. While it’s a good idea to keep this debt load as manageable as possible, it’s also true that most student loans can be repaid over a long period of time.

And here’s the second point: One of the best gifts you can give your children is to be self-sufficient in your retirement. You could easily spend two, or even three, decades as a retiree, so you will need to build considerable financial resources to pay for all those years. Your adult children will have their own financial needs to address, so you’ll be doing them a great favor by relieving them of any financial responsibilities on your behalf.

Taking these factors into account, you may want to direct most of your saving and investing efforts toward achieving a

comfortable retirement. Consequently, think about putting away as much as you can afford into your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Even with this focus on retirement, though, you may find opportunities to save and invest for your children’s education. For example, if you receive bonuses or income tax refunds, or your salary goes up, or you’re able to free up money from your budget by reducing your debts, you could use these funds to invest in an education savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. When you invest in a 529 plan, your earnings and withdrawals are federally tax free, provided the money is used for qualified education expenses such as tuition, room and board, books, and computers. Depending on where you live, you may also get some state tax benefits from your 529 plan. And a 529 plan isn’t just for college — it can be used for K-12 private school tuition costs, plus expenses from qualified apprenticeship programs, such as those found at trade schools eligible for Title IV federal student aid.

It might not be easy to save and invest consistently for your retirement and your children’s education. But both goals are worthy — after all, retirement can last a long time and college is expensive. So, try to develop a financial strategy that can allow you to make progress in both areas — your efforts may well be rewarded.

With ‘Gratitude Goggles,’ Children Can See All the Beautiful Colors of the World

SAN DIEGO, California — In her multiple award-winning children’s book, The Gratitude Goggles, Andrea Mendoza-Vasconez, Ph.D., equips parents with a simple tool to help explain the positive impact of gratitude to young children.

“In a culture that tries to sell us things by constantly bombarding us with messages of not being enough and not having enough, feelings of inadequacy and mental health issues are on the rise even among children,” Mendoza-Vasconez said. “Gratitude can ground us and work as an antidote to these feelings of inadequacy.”

to treat the cause, not the symptoms. One common mistake many people make is masking the odor. While your candle warmer or favorite room spray may spread pleasant scents when used, you need to remove odors from your home if you want it to smell nice all of the time.

A few examples would be to clean/replace the carpet. Wash/Paint the walls. You can sprinkle baking soda on floors and furniture and vacuum it up. Baking soda neutralizes odors instead of just masking them. Note: Be careful, baking soda can make animals ill. Surely, you’ve heard the expression “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This adage holds true when it comes to figuring out how to deodorize your home. The best way to maintain a pleasant-smelling home is to create a regular cleaning routine and stick with it. Remember, your Home should only tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love!

The Gratitude Goggles guides children as they imagine a special pair of goggles that can appear by simply feeling gratitude. When wearing these goggles, children notice the beauty of the natural world, and they learn to appreciate who and what they do have in their lives, rather than focusing on what they don’t have. With gentle, simple messaging about avoiding the pitfalls of comparison and wanting what others have, The Gratitude Goggles helps children view the world in its true, colorful splendor.

A Literary Titan reviewer said, “Mendoza’s storytelling prowess is evident as she weaves this meaningful moral into an engaging narrative, making it accessible and relatable for a young audience.” And a Midwest Book Reviewer calls Mendoza- Vasconez’s The Gratitude Goggles “a literary masterpiece, where she eloquently delves into the significance of gratitude in society.”

Mendoza-Vasconez’s Wholesome Children:

Self-Awareness series is a guiding light for parents seeking to bond with their children over the values of kindness, compassion, gratitude, authenticity and connection. The series features The Love Tank (the first book), The Gratitude Goggles and the latest book in the series, The Puzzle Piece.

Heart Smart

507 years ago, a German monk sent a letter to a prominent archbishop. He wrote to alert him to spiritual abuses in the church. The letter included 95 statements that challenged these abuses.

Martin Luther also posted his 95 statements on the community bulletin board – the church door. His intention: to invite other religious scholars to debate these statements, leading to reform.

Little did he know that his ideas would soon ‘go viral’, thanks to the invention of the printing press. Printers reproduced and sent his writings far and wide, thrusting him into the spotlight, and forcing him to defend his convictions before powerful church leaders, determined to silence him. Luther’s continued study of Scripture drove him to conclude that many church teachings and practices undermined Scripture. The emperor summoned him to stand trial. Before powerful state and church leaders who could execute him, Luther said, “I am bound to the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. I cannot do otherwise. Here I stand. God help me. Amen.”1

Luther’s appeal to conscience shaped our culture’s convictions about ‘freedom of conscience’. For Luther, ‘freedom of conscience’ was not freedom to do anything we want. It was freedom to do what God wants, no matter what the world’s power-brokers say. No human has the right to coerce another’s conscience, to force another to disobey God. This conviction, along with the confidence that God loved him, gave Luther courage in the face of fearsome forces. 1 quoted in Eric Metaxas. Halloween’s origins can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain, which was held on November 1 in contemporary calendars. It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits.

Faith: Building Memorials to God’s Power in Difficult Times

Faith is putting our confidence and belief in a person, thing, concept, God, or His word in the Bible. It is powerful as we place trust and assurance in something based on prior evidence and proof that it is true. We rely on faith every day without even thinking about it. We trust that our car will start. We have faith that we will receive our paycheck on Friday or that our home will still be there when we return. Yet, when it comes to our faith in God, we often find ourselves doubting. We struggle to believe that God will meet our needs, answer our prayers, or intervene in our lives the way we hope. This inconsistency between our faith in everyday things and our faith in God challenges us to reflect on why we find it easier to believe in material things versus the divine.

One of the best ways to build faith is to create “memorials” to God based on recognizing and remembering those moments when God showed up powerfully in our lives, especially during difficult times. These memorials remind us of God’s faithfulness, power, and strength and help us build our confidence in Him for the future.

One of the most profound examples of God’s power in my life occurred after my brain surgery. Following the procedure because of a hospital accident, I lost my ability to communicate. I could only speak four words, and I was unable to write or even recognize photos. The weight of that loss felt unbearable. Doctors said that, with treatment, it might take six months to regain my communication skills, if they returned at all. When I couldn’t speak to others, I spoke silently to God. It was during this time that my faith was being built in ways I never anticipated.

Instead of crying, I clung to God in prayer and chose to trust Him despite what the doctors said. Then, in just three days, much sooner than anyone expected, my ability to communicate began to return. What doctors thought would take months, or perhaps never happen, occurred in

days. I know this was God at work, showing His power in my situation where the world could not help.

This memorial in my life serves as a testimony to what God has done for me. I honor and praise Him daily reflecting on His work to strengthen my faith and as a reminder to me of His ability to work in my life. This memorial builds my confidence and trust that God can and will work out other things in my life, no matter how difficult or impossible they may seem.

In the Old Testament, the Israelites erected physical memorials to commemorate God’s works in their lives, we also can create mental or spiritual memorials to remind ourselves of when only God could have worked things out on our behalf.

In Joshua 4:1-7, the Israelites, after crossing the Jordan, were instructed to build a memorial with 12 stones to remind future generations of how God parted the waters to allow them to pass. Same, we should create spiritual “memorials” in our hearts, to remind us of our moments of God’s intervention, His power, and goodness. Reflecting on these moments, our faith grows stronger. It reminds us that our God who brought us through past trials is the same God who is with us today and will continue to guide and take care of us in the future. Memorials remind us of God doing the impossible. God always does.

Building memorials to God’s power prepares our hearts to trust Him for what lies ahead. Life will always bring difficultiesfinancial, physical, emotional, and relational challenges, but each trial is an opportunity to lean on God’s faithfulness and power to deepen our relationship with him. I urge you to build your spiritual memorials to God today based on what He has done for you, then meditate on it daily while giving praise, trust, and honor to Him. Y? Why Not! Medicare Denied Lab Bill

On October 17, 2024, a client visited with a medical bill for me to check. The bill was for laboratory work that her doctor ordered for her. The client is from Lake Village, Indiana. With some editing to protect privacy, here is the letter that I sent for the client to her doctor and the laboratory.

Our client visited our office and brought a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $162.91 on bill number XXXXXXXXXX for service on 01/04/24.

The client and I phoned both her secondary insurance company and Medicare to learn why there was a balance on this bill. The client has an excellent Medicare supplement insurance policy that pays for anything that Medicare approves but does not pay.

We discovered that the item that Medicare refused to approve was filed incorrectly. To save taxpayer money, when that happens, Medicare refuses to pay for anything that is not filed correctly.

In this case, the laboratory and/or the doctor failed to give adequate medical justification for the service that Medicare refused to cover. In other words, the patient did NOT cause the

problem. Either the laboratory or the doctor or both caused the problem.

Please, stop trying to collect the balance and refile the claim correctly.

The client told me, “I’m sure glad that you help me. People in billing tend to ‘walk’ on seniors when we phone them to discuss a bill.”

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps all our clients with similar medical bill problems without charge to demonstrate that we really do appreciate and value our clients. If your insurance agency does not give this high level of service, why don’t you switch to another insurance agency? Consider our agency.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes or fraud in the Medicare billing system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.

NICHOLSON

LaVonne L. Nicholson, née Blafka, age 87, of Munster, Indiana, passed away peacefully in the morning on Saturday, October 19, 2024 surrounded in her final days by her children and grandchildren. LaVonne was commonly known as “Dolly”, a nickname given in childhood that she carried through her lifetime. She was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and was adored by everyone she met.

Dolly was the beloved wife of the late James (Jim) J. Nicholson (1937- 1983), meeting in 10th grade English class to become high school sweethearts and continued in life as loving parents of four children. Dolly and Jim were proud Chicagoans, beginning their life together in the city and suburbs before bravely moving across the US adventuring and calling home in two states and three cities while raising their family. They returned to the Chicago area in 1981. There, to help support her family, she entered a career in property management where she loyally worked for the same firm for over 20 years.

Dolly cherished family time with Jim and their children, making memories every week filled with kids sports, boating, water skiing, camping, sightseeing and travel. She was an avid Scrabble player and loved playing board games with her friends and extended family.
